Proving travel can be done either through arrival and departure stamps on passports or by sending proof of continued residency abroad if the trip exceeds those 90 days. launched later this year<\/a>, through the video platform to help advertisers and creators generate relevant content, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/made-on-youtube-2023\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube\u2019s blog<\/a>. This is the result of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/08\/google-io-to-feature-ai-updates-showing-off-palm-2-llm.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">PaLM 2<\/a>, their generative AI large language model, which comes up with human-like responses to queries and commands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">Advertisers and YouTube creators can expect to find video ideas on topics that are relevant to users \u2014 down to the title and descriptions for each video \u2014 to ensure successful viewership. Other AI-powered features would include the ability to remix videos and create ones in multiple languages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Despite AI being a big hit with advertisers, investors are still skeptical. <\/strong>Alphabet showed heavy spending on AI infrastructure, sparking concerns regarding ROIs during their third quarter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/24\/alphabet-googl-earnings-q3-2023.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">earnings<\/a> meeting on Tuesday, reports <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/24\/wall-street-wants-to-know-how-googles-going-to-profit-from-ai.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a>. Philipp Schindler, Alphabet\u2019s Chief Business Officer, stated that AI is expected to help advertisers find \u201ctheir ideal audience for the lowest possible price,\u201d backing up this assumption with early tests on YouTube, which showed 54% more reach at 42% of the usual cost, and that 80% of advertisers are using one of the AI-powered search features\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u2026but<\/strong><strong>, investors weren\u2019t sold on YouTube\u2019s ad success being a reliable KPI for the <\/strong><strong>success of <\/strong><strong>its AI experiments<\/strong>\u2014and Alphabet\u2019s executives\u2019 vague responses to investors\u2019 concerns added more fuel to the fire. Their worries? Alphabet spent USD 8 bn in Q3, some of which went to AI tech that costs a king\u2019s ransom because of the data sets that have to be integrated into it. Not only that, they feel that it is too soon for Google to jump on to the AI wagon as the technology still hasn\u2019t reached fruition. Sean Decatur, president of the museum, empathizes that none of these individuals could have imagined that their final resting place would be in a collection. \u201cIn most of these cases,\u201d he said, \u201c there was [a power imbalance] between those who were collecting [the remains] and those who were collected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This isn\u2019t a new sentiment.<\/strong> Groups across the world have been petitioning for human remains and stolen artifacts to be returned to their relevant communities for decades. In fact, many countries have pressed the issue further after the British Museum finally admitted that over 2k artifacts were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/319c8714-152f-4b65-a4a8-964661fa65f4\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">stolen<\/a> from their establishment. A US law passed in 1990 paved the way for Native American tribes to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-native-american-remains-repatriation-oneida-04c7644861aba35f4860a9a50d6b3db5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">recover<\/a> ancestral remains from museums, and Decatur believes that 2.2k remains at the Museum of Natural History can be claimed by their tribes. Even Marc Pritchard, Chief Brand Officer at Procter & Gamble \u2014 the world\u2019s biggest advertiser \u2014 agrees that consumers will take any chance to skip online ads, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/avidan\/2022\/06\/27\/7-reasons-people-hate-your-ads-and-what-do-about-it\/?sh=baf49944eaaf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a>. But when the digital ad industry is worth USD <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/237974\/online-advertising-spending-worldwide\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">627<\/a> bn, who cares what people think?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We are seeing more ads today than any other human <\/strong><strong>beings<\/strong><strong> in history. <\/strong>A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mascola.com\/insights\/history-of-advertising-1970s\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted in the 1970s revealed that, on average, an individual would see between 500-1.5k ads a day. Today, we see <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/webtribunal.net\/blog\/how-many-ads-do-we-see-a-day\/#gref\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">at least 10k<\/a>. 80% of Google\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abc.xyz\/assets\/investor\/static\/pdf\/20230203_alphabet_10K.pdf?cache=5ae4398\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">revenue<\/a> is generated from the ads you see next to search results. Meta owes <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investor.fb.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2023\/Meta-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2022-Results\/default.aspx\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">over 90%<\/a> of the bns they make to ads, as do <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/interactive\/2022\/amazon-shopping-ads\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/searchads.apple.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/me.pcmag.com\/en\/old-video-streaming-services\/18970\/ditch-the-commercials-how-to-skip-youtube-ads\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Youtube<\/a>, and even <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/623446\/why-i-think-there-should-be-ads-within-windows.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a>. Over the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/11\/business\/have-you-noticed-more-bad-ads-online-we-want-to-see-them.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">past year<\/a>, people have noticed that ads are becoming more widespread, and more annoying. The bad news? It\u2019s about to get worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why will we be seeing more ads? <\/strong>There are a few reasons: The first being an increase in privacy. Data privacy laws entered a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/legalindustry\/us-data-privacy-laws-enter-new-era-2023-2023-01-12\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">new era<\/a> in 2023, making it harder to collect user data and create targeted ads. To get ahead of the curve and avoid fines for violating these laws, big companies have been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.business.com\/articles\/how-the-ad-industry-is-changing\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">locking their platforms<\/a> down \u2014 you may notice these changes in things like your iPhone asking if you\u2019d permit an app to track your phone usage. Saying no (the appropriate response) cuts off the flow of data, which means cutting off the flow of money to companies that rely on ads. While untargeted ads may still pop up, they don\u2019t generate as much money. So the solution is ad loading \u2014 showing the user more ads to compensate for the loss of a revenue stream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Another big reason is the changing economic landscape. <\/strong>The US government has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/11\/business\/wall-street-interest-rates-federal-reserve.html#:~:text=The%20Fed%20has%20raised%20its,only%20very%20short%2Dterm%20rates.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">raised<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/11\/business\/wall-street-interest-rates-federal-reserve.html#:~:text=The%20Fed%20has%20raised%20its,only%20very%20short%2Dterm%20rates.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">interest rates<\/a> from near zero to over 5.25% over 19 months to try and control inflation. This makes it harder and less financially-sound for US-based companies to take out loans, drying up a lot of the runway that tech companies have been exploiting. Up until now, Silicon Valley has operated on the model of selling goods and services to consumers for less than they actually cost, with the end goal of crushing competitors and jacking up prices once they monopolize the market. As the economy tightens, investors and venture capitalists are being more cautious, and more insistent on evidence of return on investment. How do you magically reveal a new revenue stream to keep investors happy? Yes, you guessed it: Adverts. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Now, companies want us to be both the paying customers and the product<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>Remember when Twitter was with no charge? Remember when Netflix didn\u2019t play ads? Or YouTube? <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/meta-floats-charging-14-a-month-for-ad-free-instagram-or-facebook-5dbaf4d5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta is now testing a USD 14 ad-free subscription<\/a>. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/using-x\/x-premium\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">X\u2019 Premium subscription going for USD 8 a month will only let you see 50% less ads<\/a>. TikTok <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/10\/2\/23899771\/tiktok-paid-version-ad-free-plan-test\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">is also dipping its toe in the ad pool, testing a USD 4.99 ad-free platform<\/a>. Now that the biggest social media companies are going to make money from premium access to their platforms, life for those unwilling to pay is about to get much worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Creating a premium fee for a better experience <\/strong><strong>is an incentive<\/strong><strong> to make things worse.<\/strong> To justify subscriptions and encourage users to sign up, these platforms may intentionally make their services worse to force your hand. This is called <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/2017\/4\/14\/15275642\/united-airlines-calculated-misery-dragging-man-off-plane\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">calculated misery<\/a>, and it\u2019s been in practice for decades. You can thank air travel for this. How do you make more money on flights when everyone on the plane will be arriving at the same place anyway? You make it horrible. By making lower-priced seats more uncomfortable and the whole experience more unpleasant, frequent flyers will be compelled to pay more for a more enjoyable experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>First, everything that used to be at no cost is taken away. <\/strong>In 2014, a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flights.com\/blog\/where-has-the-legroom-gone-a-brief-history-of-plane-design\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> revealed that today\u2019s biggest economy plane seats are tighter than the smallest economy plane seats offered in the 1990s. Time Magazine expects it will <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5636154\/airplane-legroom-shrinking-asia\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">get worse<\/a>. And the same will happen on social media. Just like you\u2019re allowed less baggage per flight, paying more for extra suitcases, and having to pay to choose your seat, you now have to pay to watch a video on Youtube sans ads. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d259bfa5-f958-459f-8f12-a3c033c8827b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> has recently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/netflix-scraps-cheapest-ad-free-plan-boost-ad-tier-2023-07-19\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">followed suit<\/a>. Elon Musk was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/21\/23565364\/elon-musk-twitter-blue-subscription-no-ads\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">teasing<\/a> the possibility of the same perk on X, when it was still Twitter. And how is this calculated? By not making things irritating enough to leave, but keeping it irritating enough that you consider paying a fee for a better experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cIf you don\u2019t like it, just leave.\u201d <\/strong>When every airline is pretty much offering the same experience, you have no alternative. Cough up more money or be miserable. And sure, social media is easier to opt out of than refusing to fly to another country ever again, but the infrastructure of social media and its integration into the fabric of our lives makes it difficult. If you delete all your social media accounts right now and decide to stop using streaming services, you are effectively opting out of communicating with your friends and family, and making it impossible for yourself to participate in popular culture. Is it possible? Yes. Is it practical? Not so much.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It doesn\u2019t have to be this way, but it\u2019ll get much worse before it gets better.<\/strong> Believe it or not, our saving grace might be bad UX. Terrible user experience may create a gap in the market. Because we hate ads so much, if a competitor pops up that promises not to plague our feed with them, essentially offering a premium service without the price tag or the calculated misery, people will flock there. Some competing tech companies might go out of business, which means less pressure on the remaining survivors to turn a net income, and less incentive to use ads\u2026 unless corporate greed gets in the way. But we choose to be optimistic. It may get better in the future, but in the meantime, we have a lot of ads to look forward to.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n    <div
