Speaking to us this week is Lama El Khawanky (<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lama-el-khawanky-114259123?originalSubdomain=eg\" style=\"\">LinkedIn<\/a><\/span><span>), co-founder of <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/up-fuse.com\/\" style=\"\">Up-Fuse<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">My name is Lama El Khawanky and I\u2019m the cofounder of Up-Fuse<\/span><span style=\"\">, which transforms plastic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> bags into everyday products, like bags, clothes and footwear. Today, Up-Fuse is my life, where I spearhead production and design from the moment we get the plastic bags up until we transform them into an actual product. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">After I completed my undergraduate studies in Product Design at the German University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> in Cairo, I wanted to give myself the chance to explore what I wanted to do. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">I started exploring with Up-Fuse, before I joined as a cofounder in 2015, and quickly realized that this was what I wanted to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The best part of my job is that I can see tangible impact. <\/span><span style=\"\">I can tangibly see the impact we<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> were creating, in terms of turning waste into products, as well as working with women and refugees who learned a new skill through Up-Fuse. We\u2019re helping the environment and the society, and I felt like this is where I belong. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The one thing I gave up throughout the journey was my peace of mind. <\/span><span style=\"\">The idea of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> disconnecting from work does not exist for me anymore. Even when I\u2019m on vacation, I get anxious and want to be involved in what\u2019s happening because Up-Fuse is my baby. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The one piece of advice I would give people who are starting their business is to always<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> have a plan. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">This starts with the transition from your current job or position to the company you want to build. Additionally, you need to plan the steps you\u2019ll take in order to build a business to which you\u2019d want to dedicate yourself. And no, it\u2019s not always greener on the other side. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">There are three KPIs I frequently check. <\/span><span style=\"\">Firstly, the progress made on new products that we<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> want to launch. Secondly, the team spirit and how the team feels \u2014 are they just finishing a task because they have to or are they actually excited about their work? And thirdly, the number of sales we have achieved. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">When I need advice, I turn to several people. <\/span><span style=\"\">I mainly turn to my partners and my business<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> coach. I also talk to founders of similar startups to get their input on problems we all share, like legal issues, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Having said that, I don\u2019t think that being a founder is a lonely journey. <\/span><span style=\"\">As a founder, you<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> always need to make connections and get to know new people. But it also depends on the founder themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">So far, Up-Fuse has mainly relied on grants and competitions as a source of financing.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> These include Hivos, MIT Saudi Arabia and El Fanar. We\u2019re considering fundraising from investors in return for equity in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Our short-term plans mainly revolve around expansion.<\/span><span style=\"\"> We worked on the giveaways of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> COP27 and are hoping to do the same for COP28. We also now have an international website that sells in Germany because we have huge potential there. We also want to expand our training programs, which we\u2019ve conducted with the UN\u2019s International Organization for Migration, where we train women on upcycling, sewing, and opening their own business. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">We also want to expand our material library.<\/span><span style=\"\"> We\u2019ve already integrated plastic bottles and car<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> tires, and we\u2019re looking to add more waste types to the mix in the short-term. Our long-term goal is to become an international brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">My father never understood what I actually did, until he saw our shop at the North Coast.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> That\u2019s when he got excited.
