Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed the escalating tensions between Palestine and Israel during a meeting earlier today with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, according to an <a Blinken also sat down with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry for a separate meeting to touch on Egypt-US relations, alongside developments in Sudan and Libya, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/blinken-meets-egypts-sisi-first-leg-mideast-tour-2023-01-30\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expect Blinken\u2019s visit to drive <\/strong><strong>the conversation on Egypt in the press for the next few<\/strong><strong> days:<\/strong> Blinken\u2019s arrival in Cairo in the midst of escalating tension between Israel and Palestine has already got a lot of ink in the foreign press, with Reuters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2023-01-30\/ty-article\/blinken-discusses-tensions-between-israelis-and-palestinians-with-egypts-sisi\/00000186-01fc-d4a2-adb7-41fca6ea0000\">Haaretz<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/mena\/egypt\/2023\/01\/29\/blinken-arrives-in-egypt-at-start-of-middle-east-tour-as-violence-escalates\/\">the National<\/a> all giving space to Egypt\u2019s longstanding role as a mediator between Palestine and Israel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adani meltdown continues:<\/strong> The massive sell-off of Adani Group\u2019s shares following blistering fraud allegations has so far wiped nearly USD 72 bn off the stock market value of the Indian coal conglomerate\u2019s flagship company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-30\/most-adani-stocks-drop-as-rebuttal-draws-hindenburg-response?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1&leadSource=uverify wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Shares of flagship Adani Enterprises fell 2% while Adani Total Gas and Adani Transmission plummeted by 20% on Monday. Billionaire Gautam Adani\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f37ed3e6-1544-4edf-af3b-7be22d242a39\">413-page rebuttal<\/a> to the fraud claims \u2014 made last week by US investment research firm Hindenburg Research, which holds short positions in Adani Group \u2014 have done little to pacify investor concerns about the corporate governance of his business. The market meltdown coincides with Adani Enterprises\u2019 secondary offering, which was planned to fund green hydrogen projects, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/922f15f5-a014-4c29-807b-501f1bff9be5\">Enterprise Climate noted this morning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story is still getting front-page play<\/strong> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ccf85bcd-7cdd-4255-b51c-eb798c156f45\">Financial Times<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/rout-in-adani-stocks-bonds-continues-conglomerate-trades-barbs-with-short-seller-11675071805?mod=hp_lead_pos10\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/adani-enterprises-shares-rise-other-group-stocks-plunge-after-short-seller-2023-01-30\/\">Reuters<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/30\/adani-shares-hindenburg-report.html\">CNBC<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>Driving the conversation throughout the rest of the week: We\u2019re heading into a series of<\/strong><strong> interest rate hikes. <\/strong>Global central banks are set to bump up interest rates in the days ahead to their highest levels since the financial crisis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ef8452ca-f7bb-499f-a67f-51b13a5ad76c\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. The Federal Reserve is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f37ed3e6-1544-4edf-af3b-7be22d242a39\">expected to raise interest rates<\/a> 25 bps in its two-day monetary policy meeting tomorrow and Wednesday \u2014 pushing rates to the highest levels since September 2007, albeit at a slower pace than the 50 bps hike in its December meeting. Analysts expect the Bank of England (BoE) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/79ac8870-ec4f-4afc-bf18-3c013e27a0a4\">European Central Bank<\/a> (ECB) to hike rates by 50 bps to their highest since fall 2008.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember when \u201ctransient\u201d was the word of the day? Investors are worried this means<\/strong><strong> inflation is more persistent than they thought:<\/strong> While slowing inflation spurred hopes that central banks will slow the pace of their rate hikes and caused <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/eea75a6c-35a2-4b48-ab73-8a5d0bb9ba97\">bond markets to rally<\/a> this month, price growth is expected to remain above the Fed and ECB targets of 2% in the medium term. Inflation still stands at 6.5% in the US and 9.2% in the EU. \u201c[It] is going to be super difficult again for the Fed to \u2026 get inflation down to that magical 2% number without putting us into a recession,\u201d one analyst told the FT. \u201cThe credit markets are effectively pricing in a no-recession outcome. Pachin had been expected to respond to NPH\u2019s offer this month but has not yet done so. The highest bidder at <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/51ebd661-7bc4-402c-993a-3432a7f06307\">EGP 30 a share<\/a>, Compass Capital, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a684bd8f-263d-4cf6-b188-a4d47d25c113\">got the nod from Pachin<\/a> to do due diligence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re still waiting to hear what\u2019s happening with fuel prices this quarter:<\/strong> The government\u2019s fuel pricing committee was due to meet earlier this month to set fuel prices for 1Q 2023. Global crop production is also in for a heat stroke this year, further compounding the issue. The composite electrode-PSCs has created a promising potential for stable and faster PSC manufacturing, increased power conversion efficiency (PCE) by 23.7%, and preserved 95% of the original PCE charge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sub-Saharan Africa gets tech fund from impact investor:<\/strong> Private equity firm Convergence Partners raised USD 296 mn to purchase technology assets in Africa, including data centers and subsea fiber optics cables, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-30\/buyout-firm-convergence-raises-296-million-africa-tech-fund?srnd=technology-vp&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Almost six years later and deepfakes, while never far from the headlines, haven\u2019t exactly triggered the catastrophe that was predicted. So what is the technology being used for now?<\/p>\n<p><strong>First things first: What are deepfakes? <\/strong>Deepfakes use machine learning, AI, and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/whatsnexts\/whats-next-for-deep-tech-in-egypt\/\">deep learning technology<\/a> to manipulate visual content, replacing one person\u2019s image with another or adding content to an already existing video. The world was first introduced to deepfakes more than five years ago by a Reddit user of the same username, who shared an NSFW video that superimposed the faces of celebrities on explicit content without their consent, according to AI-focused platform <a href=\"https:\/\/the-decoder.com\/history-of-deepfakes\/\">Decoder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The tech caused an immediate \u2014 and justified \u2014 backlash: <\/strong>Linked to abuse and misinformation from the start, the spread of deepfake tech has been slowed by concerns from the public, private firms, and policymakers. \u201cBefore the alarm was raised on these issues, you had no policies by social media companies to address this \u2026 Now you have policies and a variety of actions they take to limit the impact of malicious deepfakes,\u201d AI expert Aviv Ovadya told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2022\/12\/deepfake-synthetic-media-technology-rise-disinformation\/672519\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>. Social media platforms have started to look out for deepfakes using content moderation and human and software detection methods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the inevitable cannot be stopped, only delayed: <\/strong>Some experts say that despite attempts to control the tech, deepfakes are bound to take off within a few years as AI becomes smarter and more advanced. TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram filters all already integrate some form of deepfake tech to change and enhance images. The website Deepfakes Web allows users to create their own deepfake content. And a number of less advanced applications have popped up allowing users to create GIFs from still images.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deepfakes are big business on TikTok: <\/strong>A Tom Cruise deepfake Tiktok account by the username <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@deeptomcruise?lang=en\">DeepTomCruise<\/a> has accumulated 3.8 mn followers (the account is aiming for parody rather than trying to pass itself off as Cruise.) Cruise not your bag? There are also deepfake accounts for the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@unreal_keanu?referer_url=www.indy100.com\/viral\/keanu-reeves-tiktok-deepfake&refer=embed&embed_source=null;null;embed_name&referer_video_id=7107046663893667114\">Keanu Reeves<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@iamjesserichards\/video\/7016375807861951749?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1\">Harry Styles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@iamjesserichards\/video\/7022647750806211845?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1\">Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But deepfakes still have a way to go before they\u2019re interchangeable with the real thing. <\/strong>Although the whole appeal of deepfakes is that they should be identical to the real thing, a study at <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2202.12883\">Cornell University<\/a> found that people are more likely to detect fake video or audio than they are to identify inaccuracies in written text. Some say that\u2019s because the tech isn\u2019t quite there yet. In one example, viewers of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-60780142\">clip of Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a>surrendering to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin were able to identify the content as fake thanks to Zelensky\u2019s oversized head and questionable accent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do policymakers stand? <\/strong>The World Intellectual Property Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/1\/WIPO-Deepfakes.pdf\">believes (pdf)<\/a> that deepfakes have the potential to violate human rights, privacy rights and personal data protection rights, as well as raising questions over copyright and attribution. <a href=\"https:\/\/iapp.org\/resources\/article\/the-eu-general-data-protection-regulation\/#A17\">European laws<\/a> allow for victims of deepfakes to exercise their \u201cright to be forgotten\u201d if the content shared is inaccurate, under which the content should be erased \u2014 though that\u2019s much easier said than done. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42256-022-00513-4\">China<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_3664\">EU<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdsupra.com\/legalnews\/first-federal-legislation-on-deepfakes-42346\/\">several US states<\/a> have in recent years put out regulation attempting to clamp down on misinformation through deepfakes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deepfakes likely can\u2019t be stopped. But improved media literacy could stop us from falling for them. <\/strong>Deepfakes are the latest in a long chain of means to alter or falsify audio, images, and video, all of which have become more common with the rise of the digital age.
