We\u2019re just a few short hours away from the long weekend<\/strong> here in Egypt \u2014 we hope those of you getting time off enjoy it, considering we won\u2019t get another holiday for a while.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>El Sisi signs cooperation MoUs with India during New Delhi trip:<\/strong> President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed today several MoUs for cooperation in tech, cybersecurity, youth, sports, and broadcasting, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3XXh7UI\">Ittihadiya statement<\/a>. The two leaders signed the agreements at the Hyderabad Palace in New Delhi as El Sisi on the second day of his three-day visit to India, where he is being honored as \u201cchief guest\u201d at celebrations to mark India's 74th Republic Day tomorrow. The two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations, boost investments in various sectors, and increase the volume of trade between the countries, as well as regional and international issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>El Sisi also met with several Indian ministers, officials and businessmen to pitch<\/strong><strong> economic and trade cooperation, including increasing Indian investments in Egypt<\/strong>, according to a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3HvTIEr\">statement<\/a>. El Sisi pointed to the Suez Canal Economic Zone, which includes a number of industrial and logistical zones, as a promising opportunity for Indian companies wanting to benefit from Egypt\u2019s strategic location and trade agreements with several nations. Microsoft experienced issues with its online services today, including Teams, Outlook, and its cloud platform Azure, which the company attributed to a networking outage. \u201cWe've rolled back a network change that we believe is causing impact. We're monitoring the service as the rollback takes effect.\u201d Microsoft said on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSFT365Status\/status\/1618178407316987905\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How big of an issue was it?<\/strong> Users around the world began reporting issues accessing Microsoft 365 services earlier today at around 9am Cairo time, according to Bloomberg. Azure\u2019s services across North and South America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa were affected, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/status.azure.com\/en-us\/status\">Azure<\/a>\u2019s status page. Only its services in China and its platform for governments were unaffected, Reuters reported. Almost all major global companies use Azure, so any disruption to the cloud computing platform can affect various services and \u201ccreate a domino effect,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/microsoft-teams-down-thousands-users-india-downdetector-2023-01-25\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>Ad spending for Twitter fell 71% y-o-y in December, as advertisers continue to pull<\/strong><strong> content from the social media platform under Elon Musk\u2019s leadership<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/ad-spending-twitter-falls-by-over-70-dec-data-2023-01-25\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing data from Standard Media Index. Advertisements typically contribute around 90% of Twitter\u2019s total revenues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourteen of Twitter\u2019s top 30 advertisers had already pulled their content from the<\/strong><strong> platform in October<\/strong>, following CEO Elon Musk\u2019s take over, while more were spurred by the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/825c8c0a-32ce-4065-a934-437342cfc47b\">paid account verification<\/a> that led to scammers impersonating corporations. Last year\u2019s birth rate was the lowest since at least 1950, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-17\/china-s-population-starts-shrinking-first-drop-since-1960s\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Despite efforts in recent years to scale back the country\u2019s one-child policy, officials in China have been unsuccessful in avoiding the population decline, which could have far reaching effects on the global economy and its prospects for growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The country\u2019s manufacturing capabilities will be put to the test:<\/strong> As China\u2019s working-age population continues to decline over the coming years \u2014 about 0.2% every year until 2030, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/ratings\/en\/research\/articles\/221110-economic-research-china-s-trend-growth-to-slow-even-as-catchup-continues-12550713\">S&P Global Ratings\u2019 most recent estimates<\/a> \u2014 economic growth is expected to come under strain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The implications on the global economy are not insignificant: <\/strong>A shrinking labor force and less productive manufacturing sector could mean higher prices for goods sold in Western countries already reeling from high inflation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A shrinking population brings with it a risk of slower consumption: <\/strong>While economic growth in China has long been driven by its position as a global manufacturing powerhouse, in recent years growing domestic consumption has also become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/chinas-economy-faces-deeper-problems-than-its-slowing-growth-11673963577\">a considerable growth engine<\/a> that was expected to help carry much of the weight in the country\u2019s future economic expansion. Now with a dwindling population, China\u2019s consumption-led expectations of growth are also under threat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is all taking place far sooner than authorities expected: <\/strong>A shrinking population is fairly common in countries where a larger population of more affluent people starts to emerge, as seen elsewhere in the region, including in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-business-south-korea-demographics-589d1cd13582f22498dc64a707c75a4d\">South Korea<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/japan-births-new-low-population-shrinks-ages-94078296#:~:text=The number of births has,to 86.7 million by 2060.\">Japan<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/chinas-population-declines-for-1st-time-in-decades\">problem with China<\/a> is that its population decline comes at a time when its economy is still solidly middle income.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And despite government efforts to curb this trend: <\/strong>The Chinese government has introduced incentives like tax cuts and stimulus packages for parents with newborn babies since it brought its one-child policy to an end in 2016, but these policies haven\u2019t been successful, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/16\/business\/china-birth-rate.html\">New York Times<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The decline coincides with a low point for the Chinese economy: <\/strong>China\u2019s economy last year grew at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/chinas-population-declines-for-1st-time-in-decades\">second slowest pace<\/a> in about four decades \u2014 only 3%, down from 8.1% in the previous year. Its poor performance in 2022 is only eclipsed by 2020 when the full force of covid lockdowns brought economic growth to some 2.4%<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lasting effects of the country\u2019s one child policy have left a significant gender imbalance in the country\u2019s demographic makeup.<\/strong> Currently there are about 722 mn men and 690 mn women living in China. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/chinas-population-shrinks-first-time-since-1961-2023-01-17\/\">unusually deep gender imbalance<\/a> is more pronounced in rural areas and has led to more young people staying single for longer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The high cost of raising a kid is also partially behind this:<\/strong> Young people in China are increasingly finding they can\u2019t afford to have kids thanks in part to rising childcare costs, the NYT reports. For others, the pandemic and the government's heavy-handed policies towards containing its spread have caused them to question whether it's the right time to be having children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But China\u2019s fate isn\u2019t sealed just yet: <\/strong>Addressing underemployment among its working-age population in both urban centers and rural towns could help stymie the negative effects of a dwindling and aging population over the coming years.
