We wish you all a wonderful start to the new year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt\u2019s natural gas exports rose 14% y-o-y to reach 8 mn tons in 2022,<\/strong><strong> bringing in USD 8.4 bn<\/strong>, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptMOP\/posts\/pfbid0jXFqT3pb1nxa3zZQBvuhGUQoEq5VYAYRfPHp53WRgH8wkZskzo36x2ksSwsh6vk3l\">Oil Ministry statement<\/a>. Revenues from our natgas exports rose 171% y-o-y on the back of elevated global prices, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- The Supply Ministry is set to announce today its indicative price list for some 10<\/strong><strong> strategic commodities<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3WPuzZY\">Akhbar El Yom<\/a>. The ministry had set up a committee <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1055320c-e8cc-40c0-903e-bd379e4c4bc3\">earlier this month<\/a> to determine the \u201cfair price\u201d of several food items deemed to be strategic commodities, in a bid to regulate market pricing amid soaring inflation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kudos to our friends at BTECH, who ended the year on a strong note<\/strong> by receiving the Most Innovative Omni-Channel Consumer Electronics Retailer Award of the year from the UK\u2019s Global Economics Magazine, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/12\/B.TECH_-Global-Economics-Awards-En-v2.docx.pdf\">a statement (pdf)<\/a>. Some 242.8 mn viewers watched the World Cup\u2019s charged final match between France and Argentina.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which countries watched the most:<\/strong> Qatar led the pack in terms of highest viewership with 93% of the adult population of viewers tuning in, Morocco came second (91%), followed by Lebanon (89%), Algeria (79%), and Egypt (72%).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Agritech and foodtech sectors are struggling to draw investors: <\/strong>VC investments in agritech and foodtech sectors plummeted 44% y-o-y in 2022 amid rising interest rates, costs and concerns over startups\u2019 business models, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2d2557bc-dd10-4702-b230-fef02048698c\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. Companies in the two sectors raised just under USD 30 bn in 2022, according to preliminary analysis by PitchBook. The slump in agritech and foodtech investments in 2022 was more pronounced versus the overall decline of just over a third in total VC financing across all industries. Equity market volatility restricted IPOs, limiting exit options, which made investors reluctant to take part in later-stage funding rounds. The long-awaited sequel to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/chart\/top_lifetime_gross\/?area=XWW\">highest-grossing movie of all time<\/a> (with nearly USD 3 bn in box office revenue) was initially scheduled for a 2014 release, but took an additional eight years to finish due to Cameron getting sidetracked with <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6238235\/why-avatar-2-took-so-long\/\">writing four sequels at the same time and a VR Disney Park ride<\/a> among other unwieldy ventures. However, the massive blockbuster \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/avatar-2-budget-expensive-2-billion-turn-profit-1235438907\/\">needs USD 2 bn in ticket sales<\/a> to make a return on investment \u2014 re-ignited heated discussions on whether it can help resuscitate the ailing format.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The original Avatar changed the landscape of 3D cinema: <\/strong>Cameron \u2014 high off the successes of The Terminator and Titanic \u2014 spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/avatars-true-cost-and-consequences-11206\/\">four years and between \u200b\u200bUSD 280 to 310 mn<\/a> working with experts to develop the <a href=\"https:\/\/fugitives.com\/avatar-cinematic-visuals-explained-2022-fantasy-action-james-cameron\/\">new technologies<\/a> that made the film\u2019s immersive, photorealistic environment possible. Reeling in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/18\/avatar-the-way-of-water-opens-to-134-million-just-missing-expectations.html\">USD 760 mn domestically<\/a> and over USD 2 bn internationally, cinema goers flocked to experience the lush, adventure-packed world of Pandora leading the sci-fi blockbuster to screen in some theaters for 234 days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the uptrend quickly fizzled: <\/strong>While the success of Avatar opened the door for a torrent of 3D movies in the early 2010s, few possessed Cameron\u2019s ambitious and expensive vision for tech-fueled art. <a href=\"https:\/\/thepopculturestudio.com\/2022\/10\/02\/avatar-2-and-the-future-of-3d-movies\/\">Some argue only a portion of 3D films<\/a>, such as Martin Scorsese\u2019s Hugo and Alfonso Cuaron\u2019s Gravity, managed to gracefully wield the technology. While 3D was ingrained in the fabric of Cameron\u2019s films \u2014 with every shot <a href=\"https:\/\/thepopculturestudio.com\/2022\/10\/02\/avatar-2-and-the-future-of-3d-movies\/\">crafted to best suit the 3D format<\/a> \u2014 it came mostly as an afterthought to the film\u2019s successors, opting to convert pre-existing 2D movies to 3D in post-production. Audiences quickly realized they were paying extra ticket prices for an inferior and sometimes headache-inducing experience and ticket sales <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/opinion\/3d-movies-are-dead-and-they-need-to-stay-dead\">dipped by the mid-2010s<\/a>. As <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/3d-box-office-1202743603\/\">demand dwindled<\/a>, so did the number of 3D releases and the appetite of movie studios.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s been a roller coaster ride to get here:<\/strong> The first 3D movie, The Power of Love, was <a href=\"https:\/\/lwlies.com\/articles\/the-history-of-3d-cinema\/\">released in 1922<\/a> using rudimentary technology to create an illusion of depth. The film was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acmi.net.au\/works\/100619--the-power-of-love\/\">recorded and projected in two separate red-and-green images<\/a>, superimposed and viewed by the audience with glasses tinted in the same colors. Decades of experimentation followed, but the format failed to pick up steam due to its high production costs. <a href=\"https:\/\/lwlies.com\/articles\/the-history-of-3d-cinema\/\">3D film saw a brief resurgence in the 1950s<\/a> as studio executives pushed out big productions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0044462\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">Bwana Devil<\/a>, which sent the 3D market into a frenzy. The medium gained traction once again in the 1980s with the rise of IMAX 3D and theme parks churning out 3D attractions based on popular movies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0102481\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">Muppet*Vision 3-D<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0113325\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">Honey, I Shrunk the Audience<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0117880\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">T-2 3D: Battle Across Time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, could the Avatar franchise be 3D\u2019s savior?<\/strong> The Way of Water has already generated the largest share of 3D ticket sales since 2015\u2019s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/12\/avatar-the-way-of-water-box-office-1235200714\/\">Deadline<\/a> reports, adding that 79% of more than 4k surveyed ticket buyers would like to see more movies in 3D. The film grossed <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/12\/avatar-the-way-of-water-opening-china-global-international-box-office-1235198763\/\">USD 434.5 mn globally<\/a> on its opening weekend, netting the third highest weekend sales achieved by a movie in the post-pandemic era. While the sales came in slightly under the USD 450 mn it was <a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/avatar-2-the-way-of-water-global-box-office-435-million\/\">expected to cross<\/a> going into its first weekend, ticket sales are<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/12\/avatar-the-way-of-water-500-million-global-box-office-midweeks-1235203567\/\">expected to see an upswing<\/a> over the holiday period with the underperformance partly due to China\u2019s covid lockdowns.
