More on that below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>Gov\u2019t to award contracts for first USD 3 bn phase of desalination program<\/strong><strong> next year -SFE\u2019s Soliman:<\/strong> Contracts to build out the first 21 desalination plants under the first phase of the Sisi administration\u2019s multi-bn water desalination program will be awarded next year, Sovereign Fund of Egypt CEO Ayman Soliman said at a conference today, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/egypt-build-21-desalination-plants-phase-1-scheme-sovereign-fund-2022-12-01\/\">Reuters<\/a>. Soliman put the value of the first phase of the program at USD 3 bn, saying that the full program\u2019s price tag is expected at some USD 8 bn. The first phase of the program has already drawn interest from north of 200 potential international investors, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The program will include several plants in locations on Egypt\u2019s Red Sea and<\/strong><strong> Mediterranean coasts<\/strong> to help give us sufficient water to keep up with population growth over the next 50 years, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said at a separate event today (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zWo_H5l4x9o\">watch, runtime: 2:51<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>It\u2019s a mixed bag in the international business press this afternoon.<\/strong> The EU is reportedly planning to set its price cap on imported Russian oil at USD 60 per barrel, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/eu-asks-members-to-set-russia-price-cap-at-60-a-barrel-11669895309?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports. The (obviously) dangerous \u201cchallenge\u201d has resulted in 15 children aged 12 or below dying as they tried to partake, but appeared unaware of the dangers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These cases have raised questions about the extent to which TikTok itself should be held<\/strong><strong> accountable.<\/strong> Although TikTok was initially unaware of several incidents of children\u2019s deaths from the \u201cblackout challenge,\u201d the company has known that children below the age of 13 \u2014 its <a href=\"https:\/\/parentzone.org.uk\/article\/tiktok#:~:text=Age%20restrictions,on%20the%20Google%20Play%20Store.\">minimum age requirement<\/a> \u2014 have been using the app. A big part of the problem is that kids are claiming to be older than 13 to create adult TikTok profiles, as the platform simply sets the age requirement but has long lacked a meaningful way to verify the information. TikTok has since met with facial age-estimation programs that are able to differentiate between teenagers and kids with relative accuracy but has not signed any agreements and has refused to comment as to why but said that it removes underage kids\u2019 accounts, removing 41 mn accounts in the first half of 2022. Twitter, BeReal and Instagram have since begun utilizing these platforms.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>We\u2019re closer than ever to a real-life Black Mirror episode:<\/strong> Brain-chip startup <a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\">Neuralink<\/a> expects to begin human trials on its brain computer-interface product within six months, pending approvals from the US FDA, CEO Elon Musk said at a \u201cshow and tell\u201d event yesterday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YreDYmXTYi4\">watch, runtime: 2:48:32<\/a>). The product would essentially \u201callow a person with a debilitating condition \u2026 to communicate via their thoughts,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-01\/musk-s-neuralink-hopes-for-human-trials-approval-within-six-months?srnd=premium\">Bloomberg<\/a> notes. Neuralink had showcased its technology <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/75b46198-eeb9-4f78-81cf-25219caf31c2\">last year<\/a> by embedding the chips in monkeys\u2019 brains, allowing them to play video games just by thinking about the physical motions of the game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The company is also working on two separate products that could help restore physical<\/strong><strong> mobility or other human body functions lost to disease<\/strong>, including correcting spinal mobility for people with paralysis, and using an eye implant to restore lost human vision \u2014 even if it was never there. skinny as the most \u201cfashionable\u201d body size. The term heroin chic was coined in the 90s by the media to describe and glorify women who were \u201cpainfully thin and sickly looking, as if they were nearly dying of a [substance] addiction,\u201d activist and actress Jameela Jamil explains in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.papermag.com\/the-hunger-game-jameela-jamil-2658618118.html?rebelltitem=2#rebelltitem2\">Paper Magazine<\/a> piece.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The smoking gun:<\/strong> Celebrities who previously boasted \u201ccurvy\u201d figures but have now lost dramatic amounts of weight \u2014 like reality TV star and serial entrepreneur Kim Kardashian \u2014 are a key clue of the changing tides, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/02\/heroin-chic-is-back-and-curvy-bodies-big-butts-are-out\/\">New York Post<\/a> says in its aptly-titled article, \u201cBye-bye booty: heroin chic is back.\u201d The Post also points to other data points like increasing demand for pilates courses, and the controversial weight-loss pill Ozempic constantly selling out as evidence of its re-emergence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can blame nostalgia: <\/strong>The trend\u2019s comeback was heralded by the return of 90s and early 2000s fashion, with <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6ab9d901-cf9f-493d-8469-4d57ee435323\">low rise jeans<\/a> \u2014 which notoriously come hand-in-hand with expectations of a flat stomach \u2014 resurfacing on runways (after their demise for nearly two decades). High fashion brand Miu Miu, for example, used models with bare midriffs donning the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.fr\/fashion\/article\/miu-miu-micro-skirt-spring-summer-2022\">micro-mini<\/a>\u201d skirt (which it can be argued, more closely resembles a belt than a skirt) in its spring 2023 show in Milan. In order to fully comprehend the ramifications of this trend making a comeback it's important to note that \u201cthe return of size zero is bigger than fashion,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2022\/nov\/16\/it-feels-like-the-progress-is-getting-reversed-how-fashion-fell-out-of-love-with-curves\">Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what is it really about? <\/strong>Flat stomachs, not the garments that dressed them, were the striking trend at recent runways, many argue. It\u2019s more about the underlying message and the glorification of skinniness, which leads to a surge in unhealthy behaviors that are sometimes adopted as \u201cnecessary\u201d to achieve the look.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kardashian is getting a lot of heat for her role in perpetuating these ideas, especially as she \u201cplays both sides\u201d:<\/strong> Kardashian bragged about the <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/health\/kim-kardashians-met-gala-diet-sent-her-to-a-rheumatologist-for-psoriatic-arthritis\">restrictive diet<\/a> that helped her lose 16 lb to fit into Marilyn Monroe\u2019s dress for this year\u2019s Met Gala echoing 90s eating disorder culture, the Guardian reports. There is an argument to be made that no single person has been as beneficial and as detrimental to the body positivity movement than Kardashian. When she first arrived on the scene in the late 2000s, she was credited with inspiring women to love and show off their curves with her voluptuous figure standing out in a sea of tall slim women on red carpets, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2022\/10\/internet-thin-culture-is-back.html\">The Cut<\/a>. Then in a real blow to the body positivity movement, she began endorsing diet products including appetite suppressants and laxatives on Instagram making millions advertising the products to her followers, many of which are impressionable young women. She has since moved on to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ec4d4a76-5ac6-46a2-9400-b159ea17b460\">other ventures<\/a>but still promotes stomach tightening treatments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How big of a role did she actually play in the \u201csize zero\u201d trend\u2019s resurgence?<\/strong> An article in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2022\/10\/internet-thin-culture-is-back.html\">The Cut<\/a> has even argued that one specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BnjoJULl-42\/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=82c4ae55-e298-4a1d-8641-9c8b3271279f\">2018 beauty campaign<\/a> Kardashian was in, in which she had clearly lost a considerable amount of weight, was the starting point of the \u201cthin is in again\u201d movement. A recent viral <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/takeyourzoloft\/status\/1572604933031198722\">tweet<\/a> also compares two photos of her from 2017 and 2022, with the side-by-side resembling the before-and-after comparisons that commonly frequented the tabloids in the mid 2000s, with voluptuous Kim on the left and skinny Kim on the right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are other people in the public eye who have also had an outsized impact:<\/strong> Model Kate Moss, who was once the poster girl for \u201cheroin chic,\u201d famously once stated \u201cnothing tastes as good as skinny feels.\u201d Millennials, many of whom were teenagers at the time, went to great lengths to make their bodies look like hers, including over-exercising, going on fad diets, and throwing up their food, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.papermag.com\/the-hunger-game-jameela-jamil-2658618118.html?rebelltitem=2#rebelltitem2\">Paper Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The odd data point that doesn\u2019t quite fit in: The average size of runway models actually isn\u2019t going down \u2014 at least not on paper. <\/strong>Out of 247 fashion shows this season, 90 included plus-size models, up from 62 the previous season, according to fashion search engine Tagwalk, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2022\/nov\/16\/it-feels-like-the-progress-is-getting-reversed-how-fashion-fell-out-of-love-with-curves\">The Guardian<\/a>reports.
