We hope you\u2019re gently winding down into the weekend like we are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Tomorrow is the last day of COP<\/strong> (unless the conference is extended in order for delegates to reach the agreement that has so far eluded them.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-01\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>The International Cooperation Ministry has signed nine cooperation agreements with <\/strong><strong>Germany worth a combined EUR 160 mn<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid0X5MXciUsA2QjTdLWFAMLAUmuKrFNtrLR2Tr7XQ9DQ9M31aXo5URnn2L93XnKMLBgl\">ministry statement<\/a>. Signed on the sidelines of COP27, the agreements include grants and loans for projects in waste management, irrigation and water conservation, education, infrastructure, public administration and digital transformation, and to boost competition in the private sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Good news for global grain markets: <\/strong>Russia has agreed to extend the UN- and Turkey-brokered pact to allow the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea amid the Russia-Ukraine war, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2022-11-02\/statement-attributable-the-spokesperson-for-the-secretary-general-%E2%80%93-the-black-sea-grain-initiative?_gl=1*1tjcgdf*_ga*MjA3NDU0NDM1OC4xNjU5NTM2MjY1*_ga_TK9BQL5X7Z*MTY2ODY4OTU2My4zLjAuMTY2ODY4OTU2My4wLjAuMA..\">statement<\/a>. The agreement \u2014 which was briefly halted by Russia earlier this month following a drone attack on its Black Sea fleet \u2014 had been set to expire on Saturday, 19 November. Japan: <\/strong>Tech giant Fujitsu is taking a leaf out of the Silicon Valley playbook and allowing dogs at one of its offices until the end of the year in a bid to encourage wellbeing and productivity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-17\/can-i-take-my-dog-to-work-its-happening-in-japan?#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a>reports. The dog office comes replete with its own indoor play area and free dog food and is accessible by a dedicated elevator, so employees with allergies \u2014 or who just don\u2019t like dogs (gasp) \u2014 can go about their business unbothered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prominent tech companies in the US made their offices dog-friendly years ago. <\/strong>Amazon has 4k doggos registered at its Seattle headquarters, while Meta, Lyft, Alphabet and Netflix also allow dogs at their offices. \u201cWe studied big tech firms in the US, and got the inspiration to create an office with a collaborative layout conducive to coming together, chit-chatting and brainstorming with each other,\u201d Fujitsu Chief Human Resources Officer Hiroki Hiramatsu said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pups are good for business: <\/strong>According to a 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-2615\/11\/1\/89\">study<\/a> published in the journal Animals, allowing dogs at the office can lower stress, foster cross-departmental interaction, and promote employee well-being. And Brazil's Neymar, who for years was the game's third-best player behind Messi and Ronaldo, said in a recent documentary about his life that he believes this will be his last World Cup. \u201cThe game will look different without them,\u201d said former Italy striker Alessandro Del Piero.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Online bullying is taking a toll on children in the Middle East<\/strong>, according to findings of a poll by Cartoon Network Mena and YouGov, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/uae\/2022\/11\/17\/children-in-middle-east-experience-more-bullying-than-other-parts-of-the-world-study-says\/\">National<\/a> reports. More than half of 3k parents of children aged 6-12 surveyed in Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey said they had noticed an increase in cyberbullying. That could be higher than the global average, the UAE newspaper says, citing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/unicef-poll-more-third-young-people-30-countries-report-being-victim-online-bullying\">UNICEF poll<\/a> that suggests one in three children across 30 countries has been the victim of bullying. Kids in the four Middle East countries are most commonly bullied over their weight, lack of social skills, nationality, and not owning the must-have gadgets. Parents observed their kids struggle with low self esteem, anxiety, depression, anger, and in severe cases self-harm as a result of bullying. Cyberbullying accounted for more than half of all bullying in the region, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The good news: Organizations and schools are grasping the know-how to rein in cyberbullying. <\/strong>A majority of parents said they thought their kids\u2019 schools were doing everything in their power to prevent bullying. Tech stocks have been among the <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/14\/investing\/tech-stocks-faangs\/index.html\">hardest hit<\/a> amid a wider downturn in the stock markets, with Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla, Apple, and Google shares all losing double-digit percentages off their value so far this year. The tougher conditions are leading tech firms to slash spending and make mass layoffs in an effort to tighten their belts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> Tech companies surged during the pandemic, investing in new workers and data centers to support remote work, socialization and e-commerce as we all kept our eyeballs glued to online content (and the ads that accompany it). That bubble is deflating and Big Tech is seeing a resulting slowdown in revenue growth, as people return to offices and resume their social lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The macro environment is not as welcoming to growth stocks as it once was: <\/strong>High global inflation is forcing most central banks to make jumbo rate hikes, putting the brake on economies that were already slowing thanks to lingering post-pandemic supply chain snarls and an uncertain geopolitical outlook. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/asia\/poll-global-economy-approaching-recession-central-banks-unchained-2022-10-26\/\">Economists are generally forecasting<\/a> that the coming recession will be short and not too severe \u2014 but that has done little to improve investor confidence in an industry that is investing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/briefing\/2022\/01\/22\/what-americas-largest-technology-firms-are-investing-in\">future technologies<\/a> at a time when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/11\/investors-fleeing-big-tech-for-old-economy-heres-what-it-means.html\">old economy<\/a> offers more certain prospects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And then there are the self-inflicted wounds:<\/strong> Big Tech CEOs including Meta\u2019s Mark Zuckerberg and new Twitter owner Elon Musk are spooking investors with risky pivots and chaotic PR. Meta investors are increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-26\/meta-s-zuckerberg-asks-for-patience-as-costs-spook-investors#xj4y7vzkg\">backing out<\/a> as the company\u2019s attempt to jump from social media into the metaverse and AI drains its funds. Meta\u2019s market value has plunged nearly 70% so far this year as revenues fell short of analyst projections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/meta-stock-down-earnings-700-billion-in-lost-value\/\">costing<\/a> founder Zuckerberg USD tens of bns in personal wealth. Musk\u2019s Twitter takeover has spooked investors at both Twitter and Tesla, with Tesla stock dropping by half since Musk first announced the Twitter buy, and investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/musks-all-nighters-twitter-raise-concern-tesla-investors-2022-11-15\/\">expressing concern<\/a> about his all-nighters spent at the social media site. Musk has apparently spent the time working to plunge Twitter into uncertainty, with sudden policy changes and mass layoffs leading to an exodus of advertisers. Twitter investor Chris Sacca <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sacca\/status\/1589732907752779776?s=20&t=86qsKuHs3h-uc9Fh38k1BQ\">tweeted<\/a> his doubts about Musk\u2019s ability to manage the social media site earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Tech is making big layoffs. <\/strong>Nearly 130k tech employees at some 814 companies lost their jobs this year, according to data from <a href=\"http:\/\/layoffs.fyi\">Layoffs.fyi<\/a>, compared to 81k in 2020, Bloomberg reports. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/62b5496d-bf12-4a6c-86f3-bdfc53a5f41f\">Meta<\/a> cut 13% of its workforce, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-04\/twitter-cuts-spur-concerns-about-us-midterms-human-rights#xj4y7vzkg?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">around half<\/a> of the Twitter team has left the building since Musk\u2019s takeover last month. <a href=\"https:\/\/stripe.com\/\">Stripe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/\">Salesforce<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyft.com\/\">Lyft<\/a> have all laid off double-digit percentages of their workers and Google and Amazon have slowed down or frozen hiring, with Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/amazon-set-to-lay-off-thousands-of-corporate-workers-11668447887\">reportedly planning<\/a> to lay off as many as 10k employees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Demand for tech products is falling short of expectations.<\/strong> Amazon shares <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/27\/amazon-amzn-earnings-q3-2022.html\">dropped<\/a> on its latest earnings release, as costs continued to rise quicker than its revenue and a projected slowdown in its holiday season earnings got investors worrying. In September, Apple ditched plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-28\/apple-iphone-14-sales-not-strong-enough-to-trigger-production-boost?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">expand<\/a> production of its iPhone 14 as an expected spike in demand failed to materialize. For companies like Meta and Google, which rely on ads as a major source of revenue, high interest rates and tightening purse strings have affected ad revenues. US advertising investment dropped 5% y-o-y in September, marking a fourth consecutive month of declines, according to data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standardmediaindex.com\/insights\/u-s-smi-core-release-note-september-2022\/\">Standard Media Index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A bursting bubble \u2014 or a reboot? <\/strong>Some analysts are comparing the fallout to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/10\/28\/stock-market-tech-dot-com-bubble-2022\">dot.com crash<\/a> of the early 2000s, after a rout in more speculative tech stocks towards the beginning of the year spread even to the juggernauts of the industry. Others have called the current crisis a \u201creset\u201d for an industry that has been flush with cash for over a decade. The fallout will force bigger companies to build some \u201cfrugality muscle\u201d and increase international competition. It could also create space for new companies to flourish, with layoffs in the sector potentially birthing a new generation of entrepreneurs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/venture-capital-investors-see-an-r-word-coming-for-tech-and-it-isnt-just-recession-11668623231\">Market Watch<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The global tech rout has also had an impact here at home. <\/strong>Local VC rounds dried up over the summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/whatsnexts\/vc-funding-for-egyptian-startups-is-drying-up\/\">we reported previously<\/a>, dropping 30% in value according to our internal tracker. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ea5eb9c7-6b0c-428f-a102-78b147e5f7c9\">Down rounds<\/a> \u2014 when a company sells shares at a lower price than its previous funding round \u2014 are increasingly common, while the downfall of local startup <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/899989a6-5cfd-4d45-8b01-8a0bdeb5cbb1\">Capiter<\/a> has some predicting that more young companies will face funding challenges.
