The EGX30 has been rallying in the past couple of weeks, since Egypt announced it <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ddd263a4-f28f-47d4-90e2-e93c3db56a26\">reached a staff-level agreement<\/a> with the IMF for a USD 3 bn, 46-month loan and moved to a \u201cdurably flexible\u201d exchange rate regime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Picking up where we left off this morning, the US midterm elections<\/strong> are still leading coverage in the international business press this afternoon, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/democrats-keep-control-us-senate-crush-republican-red-wave-hopes-2022-11-13\/\">Reuters<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/06f72d0c-522f-4883-910a-189289a07f5a\">Financial Times<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/midterms-elections-results-house-congress-senate\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/12\/midterm-senate-elections-2022-democrats-keep-majority.html\">CNBC<\/a> all taking note of the Democrats\u2019 narrow victory in the US Senate.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> on the top stories from today\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The US, Germany and other European countries have <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/58aa142f-c5b9-45ac-82ba-573d06e262a6\">pledged to provide<\/a><\/strong><strong> more than USD 550 mn to help Egypt decarbonize its power infrastructure<\/strong> and install new renewable energy capacity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Urban annual inflation <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/eda939e2-7215-4e94-bc1e-93f00623cee5\">rose to 16.2% in October<\/a><\/strong><strong>, its highest level in four years<\/strong>, on the back of surging food prices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Egypt can cover USD 16 bn financing gap, says Maait:<\/strong> Egypt expects to see more FDI and more funding inflows, including from the Gulf and \u201cother sources,\u201d after reaching a staff-level agreement with the IMF for a USD 3 bn, 46-month loan, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/043036b0-db44-4cbe-ad61-197b6da58515\">told Bloomberg<\/a> on Thursday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class='web-image'><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2022\/11\/Climate-X-6-Dec-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Enterprise Climate X Forum, our first industry-specific conference, is taking place on <\/strong><strong>Tuesday, 6 December. <\/strong>The Enterprise Climate X Forum will give insiders and newcomers alike the chance to talk about how to build a climate-centered business \u2014 and how to make sure your business continues to have access to the funds it needs to grow. The SCZone has long been expected to sign agreements with international companies to establish green hydrogen and ammonia plants at COP27. Only e-invoices will be considered for VAT deduction or refund as of 1 April, 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What e-invoicing system?<\/strong> In late 2020, the Tax Authority launched a pilot program for B2B e-invoicing with 134 companies, before expanding the system to all large taxpayers in July 2021. All B2B and B2C invoices across the country should be fully automated by December. Coty Inc. \u2014 maker of Bourjois makeup and Hugo Boss cologne \u2014 saw 9% y-oy growth in organic sales in 3Q 2022, marking the company\u2019s sixth consecutive significant quarterly sales rise, after sales plummeted during the pandemic. E.l.f. Beauty Inc., which makes low-cost makeup, reported a 33% y-o-y sales increase last quarter, while L\u2019Or\u00e9al\u2019s rose 9% y-o-y during the quarter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Demand for luxury goods is unfaltering \u2014 but drugstore products are flying off the shelves:<\/strong> Coty\u2019s luxury fragrances and cosmetics are seeing strong demand, reaffirming that <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8c35bff0-c2b2-4ca9-8c28-fddaccd1c6da\">luxury goods remain robust<\/a> despite a looming recession. But mass-market products are also seeing strong sales growth, as consumers with smaller disposable incomes continue to buy lower-priced cosmetics and skin products. Meanwhile, in a vastly different economic climate in India, productivity has yet to recover from a dip caused by the pandemic, but relatively lower levels of tech integrations and bad management practices have been identified as two main factors behind the initial plunge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The jury\u2019s still out on why employees in the US <\/strong><strong>have become less productive:<\/strong> In the first half of the year, productivity \u2014 the measure of how much output employees can produce per hour \u2014 plummeted by the sharpest rate ever recorded in more than 70 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/10\/31\/productivity-down-employers-worried-recession\/\">the Washington Post<\/a> reports, citing data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/prod2.nr0.htm#\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>. The decline in productivity is puzzling as it follows a surge in productivity to levels not witnessed in decades after pandemic-induced lockdowns forced an immediate shift to remote work, prompting some economists to suppose that the pandemic may spur longer-term growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>While productivity is high in the manufacturing industry, it\u2019s on the decline among white collar occupations<\/strong>, according to an economics professor at Dartmouth College, although knowledge workers\u2019 contributions are harder to quantify, making it more difficult to measure their productivity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employees have argued that flexibility aids their efficiency, raising new questions regarding the transition to hybrid models and remote work.<\/strong> This also coincides with a time when quiet quitting has grown increasingly popular, particularly among younger employees, leading to some <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/10\/17\/larry-summers-quiet-quitting-economic-outlook-recession\/\">speculation<\/a> that it is behind the drop. While the term \u201cquiet quitting\u201d may have recently been added to our lexicon, the practice itself is not new, so it is unlikely to be behind the drop in productivity in the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/real-reason-workers-less-productive-its-not-quiet-quitting-hiring-2022-10\">Business Insider<\/a> suggests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Productivity is also down in India \u2014 but on a different trajectory: <\/strong>Data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sPZ998\">Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy<\/a> (CMIE) indicates that revenue per employee (RPE) \u2014 which is used as a proxy for productivity \u2014 fell in 2020 during the pandemic. The fall was expected, but what wasn\u2019t anticipated is the decline carrying through in 2021 even though the country\u2019s real GDP grew at an 8% clip, <a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/opinion\/indias-falling-productivity-has-one-cause-nobody-is-talking-about-revenue-per-employee\/1171117\/\">The Print<\/a>reports. Average RPE fell between 2019-2021 across the wholesale, manufacturing, construction and retail sectors, with the most prominent decline in the manufacturing sector (28%), in stark contrast to the trend in the US.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s behind India\u2019s drop in productivity?<\/strong> Poor management practices could be a factor, suggests a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/qje\/article-abstract\/128\/1\/1\/1838606?redirectedFrom=fulltext#no-access-message\">report<\/a> published in Harvard University\u2019s Quarterly Journal of Economics, which looks into whether differences in management practices across firms can explain differences in productivity. The study, which compared management practices at large Indian textile firms, found that adopting better management practices raised productivity by 17% in the first year compared with control group firms that did not change their practices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relative lack of technology is another factor:<\/strong> A 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.aeaweb.org\/doi\/pdfplus\/10.1257\/mac.20150175\">report<\/a>, published in the American Economic Journal, demonstrates that low-income nations had lower productivity compared to high-income countries not because they did not adopt key technologies, but because they utilize these technologies at a lower intensity, relative to countries with high incomes. An Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/global-forum-productivity\/events\/Spurring-growth-and-closing-gaps.pdf\">report<\/a> explains that digital technologies fall short in counteracting a decline in productivity due to the fact that they go hand-in-hand intangible assets, such as ICT-related competencies, organizational capital and data and software, which are sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n    <div class=\"tags-section\">\n
