We have the full rundown in this afternoon\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THERE\u2019S LOTS HAPPENING NOW- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>GOOD NEWS- The <\/strong><strong>World Health Organization (WHO) says Egypt is now \u201clow-risk\u201d for the <\/strong><strong>continued spread of covid-19 spread<\/strong>, Health Minister Hala Zayed said, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/178319911005104\">cabinet statement<\/a>. Egypt has so far administered 4.85 mn doses of covid-19 vaccines to citizens, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.who.int\/region\/emro\/country\/eg\">WHO country dashboard<\/a>. Egypt has been stepping up GERD talks, with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/73532adb-5df5-483a-9a3a-6b2b9db6d2b3\">holding meetings<\/a> with his European counterparts following Egypt\u2019s unsuccessful bid to get the spineless buggers at the UN Security Council to intervene in the dispute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The prospect of a water shortage has Egypt putting desalination on the front burner \u2014 a <\/strong><strong>development that\u2019s attracting plenty of foreign interest.<\/strong> Among those sniffing around: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with the CEO of Norwegien renewable power producer <a href=\"https:\/\/scatec.com\/\">Scatec<\/a>, Raymond Carlsen, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/178973277606434\">cabinet statement<\/a>. Reuters, meanwhile, notes that more than 20 are dead and dozens missing in Western Europe \u201cas <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/thirty-missing-germany-house-collapses-heavy-rain-media-2021-07-15\/\">record rainfall in western Europe caused rivers to burst their banks<\/a><\/strong>, swept away homes and inundated cellars.\u201d You have climate change to thank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the issue with China? The country\u2019s post-pandemic recovery slowed down in the <\/strong><strong>quarter that ended 30 June. <\/strong>GDP grew 7.9% y-o-y in the second quarter, according to the state\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stats.gov.cn\/english\/PressRelease\/202107\/t20210715_1819447.html\">National Bureau of Statistics<\/a>, down sharply from the first quarter of this year, where 18.3% y-o-y growth was in no small part thanks to a low base effect. <strong>The warning bell: <\/strong>On a quarterly basis, China\u2019s economy grew 1.3% in 2Q2021 \u2014 down from 5% q-o-q in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stats.gov.cn\/english\/PressRelease\/202104\/t20210416_1816315.html\">first quarter<\/a>. Even the National Bureau of Statistics has said that while the economy had continued to \u201crecover steadily,\u201d the rebound was \u201cunbalanced,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/484f019c-8179-49d9-b23a-2885b8aeaf47\">according to the FT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KUDOS-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Our friends at CIB were named Egypt\u2019s best bank in the 2021 Euromoney awards. <\/strong>CIB is \u201ca powerhouse in its market and, increasingly, the wider region,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euromoney.com\/article\/28n8jeqceu277ru25w8hs\/awards\/awards-for-excellence\/country-awards-for-excellence-2021-middle-east#egypt\">Euromoney\u2019s website notes<\/a>, dubbing the bank as \u201cintegral\u201d to Egypt\u2019s economy. The bank\u2019s quick reaction to the pandemic and support to its retail and corporate clients was also acknowledged, along with its acquisition of a 51% stake in Nairobi\u2019s Mayfair Bank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HSBC was named Egypt\u2019s best investment bank<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Euromoney specifically noted two transactions in the past year in which HSBC was involved, namely Egypt\u2019s USD 750 mn green bond facility and a triple tranche bond of USD 3.75 bn issued by the Finance Ministry, which attracted USD 13.7 bn in orders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emirates NBD <\/strong>took home the gong for best bank in the Middle East while<strong> Citi<\/strong> was dubbed the region\u2019s best investment bank. To put it into perspective, ETFs raked in USD 767 bn in inflows in all of 2020. Equity-based ETFs alone in 1H2021 managed to outpace inflows from both last year and the year before, bringing in USD 459 bn, up from USD 366 bn in all of 2020. They even outperformed pre-pandemic years, with 2019 equity ETFs scoring USD 283 bn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s driving the appetite? <\/strong>For one, there\u2019s the rebound of asset prices following the lows of the pandemic. Then, there\u2019s an increased adoption of them across the board. This is particularly the case when it comes to traders who initially had been looking to beat the market, said Todd Rosenbluth, head of mutual fund and ETF research at CFRA. Adoption is also increasing among insurance companies and other institutional investors, he notes. Egyptian economy showed resilience in the face of the pandemic,\u201d the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the IMF likes:<\/strong> \u201cOver the past 12 months, the authorities\u2019 commitment to prudent policies and their strong performance under the IMF program have helped mitigate the health and social impact of the pandemic while safeguarding economic stability, debt sustainability, and investor confidence,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What were these prudent policies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The economic reform program provided us with a good buffer to withstand the shock of covid; <\/li>\n<li>Fiscal support included relief for businesses and workers in the hardest-hit sectors, including tourism and manufacturing;<\/li>\n<li>The postponement of tax payments and the expansion of cash transfer programs to poor households and irregular workers;<\/li>\n<li>The central bank cut interest rates by 400 bps in 2020;<\/li>\n<li>The CBE increased access to credit at preferential interest rates and imposed a six-month break on payments for borrowers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A warning:<\/strong> \u201cBut the outlook is still clouded by uncertainty related to the pandemic, including regarding the full recovery of tourism,\u201d the statement notes. The report also noted that Egypt was one of just nine countries in its sample set that saw its economy grow last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not just the UN: <\/strong><strong>Bloomberg Economics\u2019 food vulnerability <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-13\/arab-spring-redux-middle-east-most-exposed-to-food-prices-map?sref=mmeFTDW1\">scorecard<\/a><\/strong><strong> says <\/strong><strong>Egypt is among the 15 emerging economies most at risk of food shortages.<\/strong> Sudan, Lebanon, and Yemen are currently the \u201cweakest links\u201d in terms of food insecurity and rising prices, it added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many countries in the region are suffering in that respect: <\/strong>The average price of wheat flour in Lebanon soared 219%, while Syria saw cooking oil jump 440% \u2014 with many basic foodstuffs becoming too expensive for the average citizen in the MENA countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Higher food prices are here to stay<\/strong>: Food prices jumped to their highest in a decade in 2021, almost near their 2011 peak. \u201cThe recent sharp increase in international food prices has already slowly started to feed into domestic consumer prices in some regions as retailers, unable to absorb the rising costs, are passing on the increases to consumers,\u201d the International Monetary Fund <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imf.org\/2021\/06\/24\/four-facts-about-soaring-consumer-food-prices\/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery\">said last month<\/a>. Last year, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization\u2019s price index surged 34% due to droughts in key exporting nations and as some governments stockpiled food reserves. Developing economies were deeply affected by higher prices due to their dependence on agricultural imports and less processed food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food prices are continuing to hurt us here on the inflation front in 2021:<\/strong> Despite food prices in Egypt only edging up 0.2% m-o-m <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cbe1f778-c531-4f1d-869e-7bc2c2b06833\">in June<\/a>, food prices are up 3.4% over last year. Food prices rose 1.5% m-o-m between April and May contributing to May\u2019s 4.8% increase in annual headline inflation, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a19da710-1330-415c-8993-290f63133dcb\">Capmas data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>World hunger jumped to a 15-year high in 2020:<\/strong> The number of people going hungry globally surged to its highest level since 2005 last year as the covid-19 pandemic drove food prices higher and slashed household incomesBetween 720 mn and 811 mn people were undernourished in 2020, while the number of those who lacked access to nutrition rose by 320 mn to almost 2.4 bn \u2014 a third of the global population. The increase is equivalent to the increases witnessed in the previous five years combined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Malnutrition in children is becoming a serious problem: <\/strong>Among children globally, 22% under the age of five experienced stunted growth due to malnutrition while 6.7% were too thin and 5.7% overweight. <strong>Egypt is above the global average in terms of malnutrition<\/strong>, with stunting in young children under five falling slightly from 22.5% in 2012 to 22.3% last year while wasting in children came in at 9.5% in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But we\u2019ve been seeing improvements in many metrics: <\/strong>Prevalence of undernourishment in the total population fell to 5.4% in 2018-2020 compared to 6.4% in 2004-2006, the UN report showed. Meanwhile, the prevalence of severe food insecurity in the total population also went down to 6.7% in 2018-2020 compared to 8.4% in 2014-2016.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has Egypt been doing to combat food insecurity? <\/strong>During the pandemic, Egypt was quick to ramp up cash subsidies to the neediest segments of the population and to implement a no-questions-asked wage protection program for day workers. The government also ensured that our strategic wheat reserves were sufficient to guarantee at least <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3d715b11-8d1e-4819-aa41-86f360e0bd38\">six months of consumption<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/11efc8e1-d470-4860-a355-1befc9c74925\">Wheat tenders<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a45a3d1e-d9ca-412b-8528-d1068bb72196\">local wheat production<\/a> were primetime news. Prime is quarterbacking the company\u2019s listing on the bourse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wait, how can the company know the value of the transaction before it even gets the <\/strong><strong>green light for the IPO? <\/strong>In a standard initial public offering, a company would set out to offer a certain percentage for sale, then go on to price the shares (based on market feedback to its investment bankers and a separate fair value report), then allocate shares to interested buyers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But Ghazl El Mahalla FC will be listing as a new company<\/strong> with initial capital of EGP 200 mn. Prime will place EGP 37 mn worth of shares via a private placement to institutional investors, while another EGP 98 mn will be earmarked for sale to individual retail investors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That means the company expects to rake in EGP 135 mn in cash from new shareholders<\/strong>, while El Mahalla Spinning and Weaving Company, the football club\u2019s current operator, will make an EGP 65 mn in-kind contribution to the company\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The in-kind contribution includes<\/strong> the 20-year concession for the stadium, training areas and player premises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isn\u2019t it unusual for a company with no financials and no track record to list on the EGX? <\/strong>Yup. But Maher says Ghazl El Mahalla FC can go ahead provided it checks certain boxes, including having an FRA-approved business plan and at least 1k shareholders. Also: 40% of the new company\u2019s capital will be subject to a two-year lockup agreement. Shares that are part of the lockup will include those held by El Mahalla Spinning and Weaving and a part of the private placement shares.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The minimum of 1k shareholders is definitely doable,<\/strong> Maher tells us. The company itself has 15k employees and the government is very keen on the offering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Public subscription is expected to take place before the new season of<\/strong><strong> Egypt\u2019s Premier <\/strong><strong>League<\/strong><strong> in October, <\/strong>Maher added. Travel related consumption at vacation destinations has been estimated to contribute \u200b\u200b1 kg of CO2 for every dollar spent, according to a 2018 study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-018-0141-x#Sec2\">Nature<\/a>, which puts the total GHG contribution of tourism at 8% of the worldwide total.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Covid-19 brought a halt to much of our global gallivanting:<\/strong> Peak tourism in 2019 slowed down significantly over the last year as travel bans and lockdown restrictions brought the industry to a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fff3ab80-a127-46b8-8035-deb75460fdc1\">standstill<\/a>. Flight bookings to Egypt remained more than <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/52d5ac18-0394-4630-a463-ab50a4c748c6\">50% below<\/a> 4Q2019 levels in May and had dipped to near-zero in March and April last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But many people are feeling the itch to get moving again.<\/strong> If this sounds like you then here are a few things to consider to make your travel plans at least a little less burdensome for the planet and more mindful of local communities and ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try staying local: <\/strong>The number one thing you can do to reduce your travel footprint is to never set foot on a plane. The aviation industry is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/sustainable-development\/climate-action\">estimated<\/a> to contribute 5% of global greenhouse emissions and is on track to have that figure grow by at least 25% by 2030, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/sustainable-development\/tourism-emissions-climate-change\">UNWTO<\/a>. While that number may not seem particularly alarming on its own, the difference between emissions caused by air travel and other transport is. In Europe, a single person\u2019s air travel contributes 285 grams of CO2 per mile, compared with the 158 grams per passenger mile from cars and the 14 grams per passenger produced by rail, according to the European Environment Agency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So maybe consider one of a number of local destinations (that could really use your money right now) like Hurghada, Nuweibaa, Marsa Allam, Sharm El Sheikh, Taba, Ras Sedr.<\/strong> Even Sahel is better than stepping on a plane and heading to an animal sanctuary in East Asia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consider how you get there: <\/strong>If you intend on travelling by car, consider carpooling with other friends to reduce mileage or better yet use <a href=\"http:\/\/dittocarpool.com\/\">Ditto<\/a> to find people heading to similar destinations. Maybe consider ditching the car altogether and packing your stuff into a bus. <a href=\"https:\/\/go-bus.com\/\">GoBus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bluebus.com.eg\/\">BlueBus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/eastdelta-travel.com\/\">East Delta<\/a> all offer services to most Red Sea destinations and you can even catch a comfortable sleeper train through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memphistours.com\/\">Memphis Tours<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/wataniasleepingtrains.com\/\">Watania<\/a> if you\u2019re heading South to Luxor and Aswan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where you stay matters: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.nabu.de\/news\/2017\/23046.html\">Cruises<\/a> and resorts often top the list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/2020\/2\/25\/21152903\/coronavirus-cruise-ship-outbreak-cruises-sexual-assault-environment\">least sustainable<\/a> accommodations for tourists, with a single cruise contributing as much particulate matter as 1 mn personal cars. Shying away from either of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamesellsmoor\/2019\/04\/26\/cruise-ship-pollution-is-causing-serious-health-and-environmental-problems\/?sh=1de3d9c537db\">energy intensive<\/a> and ecologically invasive options would probably be best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opt instead for a stay at an eco-lodge<\/strong>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/taziry.com\/the-ecovilage\/\">Taziry<\/a> in Siwa, <a href=\"https:\/\/anakato.com\/home\/\">Anakato<\/a> in Aswan, <a href=\"https:\/\/altarfa.net\/\">Al Tarfa<\/a> in El Dakhla Oasis or any one of the many campsites in Nuweiba all of which are very low carbon alternatives compared to traditional travel options.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you insist on (and are able to board) a plane<\/strong>, purchase a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstraveller.com\/features\/guide-to-airline-carbon-offset-programmes\/\">carbon offset<\/a> offered by your airline. This voluntary option requires you to spend a little extra cash that will contribute to sustainable initiatives spearheaded by the company \u2014 like planting trees or constructing solar panels \u2014 which in theory should make up for the emissions contributed through your plane ticket.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For some local sustainable travel inspiration: <\/strong>Omar Samra\u2019s sustainable travel company <a href=\"https:\/\/wildguanabana.com\/\">Wild Guanabana<\/a> organizes socially and environmentally friendly tours, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DaymaJourneys\/\">Dayma<\/a> organizes eco-journeys and learning experiences ranging from full fledged trips to bird-watching excursions.
