We have the rundown in this afternoon\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW- Egyptian ministers are heading to Sudan to talk GERD:<\/strong> Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel Ati are in Khartoum today to talk GERD with Sudanese officials including Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and the head of Sudan\u2019s ruling sovereign council, Abdel Fattah Burhan, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/152612140242548\">cabinet statement<\/a> said. Look for an agreement on a global minimum corporate tax to be high on the agenda at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.g7uk.org\/\">G7 summit<\/a>, which runs Friday-Sunday in the UK. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/with-g7-summit-first-stop-biden-embarks-8-day-trip-europe-2021-06-09\/\">Reuters<\/a> notes: \u201cG7 finance ministers agreed before the summit to pursue a global minimum tax rate of at least 15% and to allow market countries to tax up to 20% of the excess profits \u2014 above a 10% margin \u2014 generated by about 100 large, high-profit companies.\u201d <strong>Biden has an up-hill battle <\/strong>getting the tax (which he supports) through the Congress, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6c98b271-bd13-4517-81bb-6ef7f1798085\">Financial Times<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD as the business day gets underway across the ocean: <\/strong>The global business press thinks <strong>we\u2019re edging closer and closer to the day of reckoning for Big Oil<\/strong> after Shell said it will \u201cspeed up its energy transition\u201d and \u201caccelerate its plan to cut greenhouse gasses\u201d in the wake of a Dutch court ruling we mentioned recently. The story leads the front pages of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/shell-to-speed-up-emissions-cuts-in-wake-of-court-ruling-11623236932?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/878cb5cd-9814-4cb2-bbfb-c3f7b8927716\">Financial Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/shell-seek-ways-deepen-carbon-cuts-following-court-ruling-ceo-2021-06-09\/\">Reuters<\/a> also have the story, presenting the summit as a near-last-ditch bid to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/vaccines-climate-g7-hopes-show-west-is-not-over-yet-2021-06-07\/\">\u201cshow [the world] that the West isn\u2019t over yet.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is a post-covid travel system taking shape before our eyes?<\/strong> The European Union is moving toward the 1 July launch of a new travel certificate system that aims to make it easier for visitors to move between countries in the bloc. Non-EU citizens can apply for the certificates, but won\u2019t automatically be granted one even if they are admitted to an EU country, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eu-lawmakers-virus-pass-summer-travel-d8e4c4b05df36cc982afb9340ca203a9\">Associated Press<\/a> reports. European countries had been concerned that the new agreement (above) would let Amazon off the hook, since its margins are lower than the minimum 10% threshold stipulated by the proposal, but AWS\u2019 30%+ profits could mean Amazon would be taxed after all if the agreement is ratified. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1b16c49d-b8fd-4eac-9ff1-d5e8b9510110\">The Financial Times<\/a> also had the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUPERCYCLE WATCH- Producer prices are soaring in China <\/strong>thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2fb13174-3377-49ef-8300-480e0abee206\">post-covid commodities boom<\/a>, adding to inflationary pressures globally, according to producer price index (PPI) data cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/bde9a768-7867-4c97-9008-3b57104e30c6\">the FT<\/a>. China\u2019s PPI \u2014 a gauge that measures the price of goods leaving its factories \u2014 beat forecasts by gaining 9% during May, its biggest y-o-y increase since September 2008. The index has been steadily inching up in recent months due in part to a favourable base effect. Higher factory prices also come as delays at several ports in southern China caused by a fresh covid-19 outbreak <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6e93d57b-cb86-4d9a-95e7-4d5f31cd4b95\">have led to worries<\/a> of supply chain disruptions and pricier exports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HERE AT HOME- Analysts have <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6bb18bfa-39fe-4f57-ae02-2d7688b688be\">penciled in<\/a><\/strong><strong> heightened inflation \u201csoon\u201d as a result of the <\/strong><strong>year-long commodities rally. <\/strong>Inflation figures for May from state statistics bureau Capmas are expected out tomorrow at the latest. business climate in Egypt worsened for the second consecutive quarter <\/strong>as the emergence of new covid-19 variants globally led to a slowdown in domestic sales and demand as well as lower exports, the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies\u2019 (ECES) said in its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/6\/BB58-A.pdf\">Business Barometer report (Arabic, pdf)<\/a>. The ECES\u2019 business barometer, a gauge of real economy trends including supply and demand, output and input prices, wage and employment, stayed unchanged from the previous quarter at 47.0 in 3Q2020-2021, three points below a 50.0 \u201cneutral level,\u201d said the research center. Among the report\u2019s highlights:<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re still doing better than during peak covid:<\/strong> The contraction during the third quarter of the fiscal year \u2014 which ran between January and April 2021 \u2014 was less pronounced than in the peak of the pandemic between April and July 2020, when the gauge was as low as 36.0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But businesses are holding back: <\/strong>The drop in sales and exports caused many businesses to cut down production and capacity utilization. Firms surveyed by the ECES also said they had held back on expansion plans including adding new production lines, products, or technologies until conditions improve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SMEs were the hardest hit: <\/strong>Sub-gauges measuring activity in small and medium enterprises were all below the 50.0 mark. For larger companies, only gauges measuring production, capacity utilization, and export growth came in below 50.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Higher input prices, wages: <\/strong>Respondents cited paying more for inputs as covid-19 continues to affect supply chains, which led to an increase in a sub-gauge measuring end-product prices across both SMEs and larger companies, but at a slower pace than in 2Q. A separate gauge measuring wage increases also rose by 9 basis points since the start of the calendar year due to annual raises in most companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investment growth was also slow during the third quarter of FY2020-2021<\/strong>, with another gauge measuring investment spending recording a neutral 50.0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the outlook is optimistic, despite ongoing uncertainty:<\/strong> The business community remains hopeful the gauge will move into expansion territory in 4Q2020-2021 (April-June) to reach 51.0, the ECES said. Forecasts across all sectors, except for tourism and financial services, were positive \u2014 with respondents saying telecoms, construction and transformative industries showed the most promise so far into the ongoing quarter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A separate gauge measuring activity in Egypt\u2019s non-oil private sector, the purchasing managers\u2019 index, has also remained sluggish <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fd93da9f-bbe3-44e1-85af-bddf65789ecf\">since December 2020<\/a><\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>The PMI edged up to 48.6 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3cc4a91d-d7ac-41d7-8942-10de49ba3d31\">last month<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2dcfcd20-2bb5-4453-bf6c-94aab883abd1\">47.7 in April<\/a>, remaining well in contraction territory. The zone will focus on food, electronics and car parts and would be the first foreign industrial zone in the country to be set up by an EU member state, Trade Minister Nevine Gamea said. Polish companies that previously visited Egypt had also expressed interest in the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/10\/30\/egyptian-delegation-meets-with-54-polish-companies\/\">energy and petrochemicals<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/07\/05\/delegation-from-polands-asseco-in-town-for-it-investment-talks\/\">telecom<\/a> sectors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is this Polish SEZ?<\/strong> The SCZone signed the agreement with the president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invest-ksse.com\/ksse-1161\">an SEZ in<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.invest-ksse.com\/ksse-1161\">Katowice<\/a>, an industrial city in south-west Poland. More than 450, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invest-ksse.com\/about-us-2084#\">mainly automotive<\/a> businesses are currently based in the zone. This would be Moscow\u2019s second in Egypt after the proposed USD 7 bn, 5.25 mn sqm <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/05\/24\/egypt-and-russia-finally-sign-contracts-for-usd-7-bn-riz\/\">Russian Industrial Zone<\/a> (RIZ) <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3zeATPE\">in East Port Said<\/a>, which is also part of the SCZone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER MANUFACTURING NEWS- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Elaraby Group plans to establish in 2022 an industrial complex for household <\/strong><strong>appliances,<\/strong> its second in Quesna, Menuofia, bringing its total nationwide to five<sup><\/sup>, CEO Mohamed El Araby said at a public event, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3itqYQA\">Al Mal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The group also plans to establish three factories in its <\/strong><strong>Beni <\/strong><strong>Suef complex next year<\/strong> to manufacture washing machines, motors and fans. The complex currently includes five operational factories with investments of c. EGP 2 bn. The Masrawy report cited a discussion with NBE Deputy Chairman Yehia Abou El-Fotouh<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EARNINGS WATCH- Abu Qir Fertilizers\u2019 net income rose 14.5% to EGP 2.44 bn <\/strong><strong>during the first nine months of its fiscal year,<\/strong> up from EGP 2.13 bn in the same period the year before, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/6\/ABUK-31-03-2021-EN.pdf\">its latest financials (pdf)<\/a>. More finance was raised by rapid delivery apps in 1Q2021 than during all of 2020, the salmon-colored newspaper said, citing figures from research firm Pitchbook Data.
