In a similar vein, <strong>reports of Juhayna\u2019s imminent delisting are greatly exaggerated<\/strong> (if you\u2019ll allow us to borrow from Mr. Twain). JUFO has been moved to the D-list of companies that are in violation of listing requirements, but a company official says it hopes to remedy the situation before the end of June. We have chapter and verse on both stories in this afternoon\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW- President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is inviting Palestinian President <\/strong><strong>Mahmoud Abbas and leaders of other Palestinian \u201cfactions\u201d<\/strong> (read: Hamas) to Cairo for unity talks, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3c89k0S\">Youm7<\/a> reported just before we hit \u201csend\u201d on this aftenroon\u2019s issue.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- \u201cThe Market\u201d is starting to get really edgy about inflation <\/strong>after the rate hit 2% in May, the first time since 2018 that inflation has topped the European Central Bank\u2019s target, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1b075b3a-f307-44e0-b3a4-b1f3f267bea7\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. Across the pond, that comes as \u201c<strong>some investors are preparing for wild swings in financial markets, worried that inflation<\/strong>, and the Federal Reserve\u2019s pledge to let it rise, will lead to a more volatile world, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-wall-street-players-who-worry-inflation-heralds-wild-markets-11622539801?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> adds. It all has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2021-06-01\/stimulus-checks-2021-is-government-cash-as-economic-policy-here-to-stay?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> asking whether policymakers are really ready to manage the economy boom they\u2019ve created through the rapid doling out of stimulus funds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO HAPPENING NOW- OPEC+, a cartel of OPEC and other \u201coil producing partners\u201d <\/strong><strong>are <\/strong><strong>meeting today<\/strong> to set output targets. They\u2019re widely expected to \u201creiterate their decision to gradually increase output,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/01\/oil-opec-meeting-in-focus-amid-concerns-over-iranian-oil-supply.html\">CNBC<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KEEP YOUR EYE ON- A new pandemic? <\/strong>It\u2019s admittedly really (really) early to talk about another pandemic, but: A Chinese man has been confirmed as the first case of human infection with the new H10N3 strain of bird flu after being diagnosed last Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/china-reports-human-case-h10n3-bird-flu-2021-06-01\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing a statement by China's National Health Commission. The statement did not detail how the 41-year-old man contracted the virus, but said that H10N3 was a mild virus strain and the risk of it spreading on a large scale was very low. The EGX <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/6\/Capture.jpg\">said this morning<\/a> it would move JUFO and a handful of other companies to the D-list if it did not submit audited financials by today \u2014 the bourse\u2019s final deadline for companies to report their FY2020 results. The EGX had issued a warning to companies who had not yet submitted last year\u2019s financials on 25 May that they would be placed on the list if they did not submit them by 1 June.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orascom Investment Holding and El Wadi Touristic Investment <\/strong>both made the deadline by filing financials today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it mean to go on the D-list? <\/strong>Investors will no longer be allowed to buy Juhayna shares on margin, and they won\u2019t be on the list of stocks in which same-day trading is permitted. The shares would also face a 5% up-or-down limit instead of the 10% band in which they\u2019re presently allowed to trade. \u201c<strong>A company would generally sit on the D-list for a very, very long time<\/strong> before the EGX would start delisting procedures against them,\u201d a veteran market observer told us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When does JUFO plan to file its financials? <\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019ve been one of the most compliant companies on the EGX and have never been fined since our IPO,\u201d Investor Relations Director Khaled Daader told us this afternoon. \u201cThis is unfortunate, but it\u2019s a short-term thing. We have two auditors: KPMG and Grant Thornton. One is more or less finished with its review and the other has asked for a final two-week extension, which would take us until mid-June. We\u2019re hopeful we will be able to meet that deadline.\u201d If it does, JUFO would then go before an EGX committee that meets each week and be bumped back to the \u201cA\u201d list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background: <\/strong>The EGX had set up the D-list of stocks in August of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0f29a7a0-f052-4b20-9ffc-3dc34976f9b7\">last year<\/a> as part of a compliance grading system for listed companies. The LSE-listed outfit, which recently came home to the EGX, aims to expand geographically \u201cthrough selective acquisition of entities with proven market value outside Egypt,\u201d the official said. It\u2019s also aiming to strengthen its network with <strong>new, branded medical services<\/strong> that complement its existing pathology and radiology offerings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IDH will also open 30-35 new branches in <\/strong><strong>Egypt<\/strong><strong> this year<\/strong>, the official added. That\u2019s on par with or just ahead of the pace at which it added new branches last year: IDH had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/70a8ec27-fa67-4977-a2f4-30d0fccba9c3\">429 branches in Egypt<\/a> at the end of 2020 and a market share of more than 50% through its Al Borg and Al Mokhtabar brands, according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/resources.inktankir.com\/idh\/IDH-FY2020-Earnings-Release-FINAL-4.pdf\">FY2020 earnings (pdf)<\/a>. It opened 30 new branches in Egypt last year despite covid-19, giving it a total of 481 branches across Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Nigeria as of 31 December 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A rosy outlook for 2021: <\/strong>IDH, a consistent dividend payer that has guided for very strong EBITDA margins and top line growth since going public in 2015, is promising more of the same this year, Dr. Hend El Sherbini said in a recent interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3yUFXsi\">Al Mal<\/a>. The company earlier forecast <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2132aa9c-4dcf-4d91-a6f7-e5c4d1990de1\">double-digit revenue growth<\/a> and a 40% EBITDA margin through the year. The guidance comes after the company saw <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2132aa9c-4dcf-4d91-a6f7-e5c4d1990de1\">net income rise 21%<\/a> to EGP 609 mn in 2020 from EGP 505 mn the previous year and a 19% y-o-y increase in revenues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The company\u2019s growth plans are supported by a USD 45 mn, <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/003e6c20-e4cf-409e-87d1-ece077700544\">eight-year facility<\/a><\/strong> IDH obtained in late May from the International Finance Corporation to finance its growth plans in promising emerging markets while also expanding its services in Egypt and Jordan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IDH now has a market capitalization of over EGP <\/strong><strong>10 <\/strong><strong>bn<\/strong> after the debut of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/48ddada3-0016-47a8-a9e6-201cb9d0cca7\">5% (or 30 mn<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/48ddada3-0016-47a8-a9e6-201cb9d0cca7\">shares)<\/a> of its existing 600 mn shares on the Egyptian Exchange on 20 May. I then decided I wanted to apply the theory I had learned to the practical world, so I joined the research team at Prime Holding. I worked there for eight years and I was very lucky to meet Aboubakr Emam who was the head of research there at the time, and I moved with him to Sigma Capital for a year. I then moved to my current position at Banque Misr which was an entirely new experience and sector to me, but I loved the challenge it posed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My work sees me set the strategy for the bank for the next five years.<\/strong> We\u2019re trying to compete at the global level as opposed to just with the local banks. Our strategy reflects that by focusing on issues such as green finance and financial inclusion. We look at what services we need to offer our clients, what firms we could acquire to further our reach, and how to internally digitalize our processes to be more efficient. I think the last one is probably the most difficult, as a lot of people already have an established way of doing things, and don\u2019t want to shake up the status quo. On a day to day basis, my job entails monitoring peers, tracking our status on the strategy, and writing reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The process we go through to put together a strategy is quite comprehensive. <\/strong>We first conduct market research and look at competitors locally and globally. When we find new trends or products we\u2019re interested in, we see how other people executed them and how we can apply it in Banque Misr. We also check if it's in line with Central Bank of Egypt regulations and whether the sector we\u2019re looking at is interested. We then meet with sector heads to set an objective and execution plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The pandemic has put a big dent in our strategy for the coming years.<\/strong> All the numbers changed [laughs]. From interest rates, to sectors being impacted differently, we had to set new KPIs and financials. Even the HR strategy completely adjusted to account for work from home and online training sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of our main goals in the next period is to make Egypt a gateway to Africa. <\/strong>The bank is aiming to expand across the country and continent. It doesn\u2019t have to be a physical presence, our digitalization strategy allows us to expand through digital channels through which we will offer some of our services in different countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I think this year is better than 2020, but we\u2019re still far from a full recovery.<\/strong> Smart policies and initiatives from the government and the CBE helped the country somewhat absorb the negative impacts of the pandemic, but we still need time to get back on track to pre-covid forecasted growth for many firms and sectors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The thing I\u2019m most proud of at work is putting together my team. <\/strong>They\u2019re all eager to learn and dedicated to the job. It\u2019s been great to see them grow and excel. I love to see how knowledgeable they\u2019ve become about everything from global news to economics, and see them implement their knowledge through our work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are many digital initiatives the team has been spearheading<\/strong>, such as launching digital branches, as well as instant and express loans for SMEs. If I had to take it further and list what\u2019s still missing and what I\u2019d like to see in the sector nationwide, I think we need to take more steps to develop blockchain, derivatives trading, and contactless cards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m always very excited for any initiative that supports inclusivity<\/strong>. For example, we\u2019re launching products targeting and being tailored to suit SMEs and women to allow for easier access to financing, which in turn helps bolster the economy. The country needs all sectors to be contributing to its growth, not just a single entity or area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a working mother, I\u2019ve been doing my job from home since the beginning of the pandemic. <\/strong>It\u2019s been very hard to manage work and online schooling simultaneously. I want my life back [laughs]. I\u2019m very grateful to my boss Wassim El-Metwally who was very understanding of the situation and gave me the leeway to work from home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The last great thing I watched is the Ramadan show <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shahid.mbc.net\/en\/series\/Khalli-Balak-Min-Zizi-Season-1\/season-864855-864856\">Khali Balak Min Zizi<\/a><\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>My six-year-old daughter is very similar to Zizi and Tito and the TV show helped me change the way I approach and understand her. It was a milestone for me and I\u2019ve since been trying to give her more attention and be calmer with her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The last great thing I read was <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Habits-Highly-Effective-People-Powerful\/dp\/0743269519\">The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People<\/a><\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>However, one of my favorite books is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Secret-Rhonda-Byrne-ebook\/dp\/B002M5E2DW\/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=\">The Secret<\/a>; it really changed the way I see things. Now I try to remember that if I truly believe something will happen, chances are it just might. The effectiveness of this kind of thought has been proven to me time and time again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I\u2019m not working I like to do arts and crafts. <\/strong>I like upcycling things, especially through decoupage or painting. Me and the kids have upcycled clothes, furniture, and basically anything we can find. And with little over a month before the rains start, this week a senior official at the country\u2019s meteorological authority <a href=\"http:\/\/apanews.net\/en\/news\/ethiopia-to-use-cloud-seeding-technology-as-second-option-to-fill-controversial-dam-official\/\">said<\/a> that 10 agencies had begun cloud seeding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cloud seeding- a primer: <\/strong>The science behind cloud seeding isn't actually new, and has been around since the 1940s, thanks to the work of atmospheric scientist Bernard Vonnegut (yes, author Kurt Vonnegut\u2019s older brother). Vonnegut was the first to discover that you could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2018\/01\/does-cloud-seeding-really-work-experiment-above-idaho-suggests-humans-can-turbocharge\">manipulate clouds into precipitation<\/a> by sprinkling them with a little silver iodide. To do this on a larger scale, scientists fix containers full of the chemical compound to the wings of planes which, once in the air, are able to release it into cloud formations. The silver iodide triggers water vapor to more quickly freeze before it eventually melts and falls to the ground in the form of rain or snow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cloud seeding may be facilitating Egypt\u2019s greatest existential threat \u2014 but it could also help us:<\/strong> Countries concerned about the future prospects for droughts and water insecurity have increasingly been turning to cloud seeding technology. While the process is far from widespread, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/115\/6\/1168\">recent studies<\/a> have suggested that seeding is effective in increasing rainfall, thereby helping curb short term water scarcity, and several countries around the world are beginning to take it seriously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China plans to take cloud seeding to a whole new level:<\/strong> The Chinese government has long been one of cloud seeding\u2019s biggest supporters, and has the world\u2019s largest seeding system. It\u2019s now planning a dramatic expansion of its program, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.www.gov.cn\/policies\/latestreleases\/202012\/02\/content_WS5fc76218c6d0f7257694125e.html\">pledging at the end of 2020<\/a> to expand it to cover 5.5 mn sq km \u2014 1.5x the size of India. Beijing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2017-09\/21\/c_136624811.htm\">spent more than USD 1.3 bn<\/a> on weather modification programs between 2012 and 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And our Gulf neighbors are funding a project that could change how we think about cloud seeding: <\/strong>The UAE\u2019s Rain Enhancement Research Program (RERP) has been <a href=\"https:\/\/wired.me\/science\/environment\/cloud-seeding-uae-dubai-rain-floods\/\">experimenting<\/a> with cloud seeding since 2019, and claims it is capable of increasing rainfall by some 10-15% \u2014 and in some rare cases by up to 30%. Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/05\/27\/middleeast\/clouds-electricity-rain-spc-intl\/index.html\">scientists are preparing<\/a> to pilot an experimental technique to create rain: a team of researchers from the UK\u2019s University of Reading will soon launch a fleet of custom drones into the sky above Dubai to shoot electrical charges into the atmosphere. The theory is that electrically-charged droplets are more likely to grow in size, and thus are less likely to evaporate before they reach the ground.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the UAE may have already felt the effects of overreach:<\/strong> At the end of 2019, the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khaleejtimes.com\/news\/weather\/floods-shut-down-roads-slow-traffic-to-a-crawl-in-uae\">experienced huge downpours<\/a> that left roads, homes and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arabnews\/status\/1193524153174896640\">the Dubai Mall<\/a> underwater. Eight cloud-seeding operations completed by the RERP a few weeks prior may have had something to do with it, <a href=\"https:\/\/wired.me\/science\/environment\/cloud-seeding-uae-dubai-rain-floods\/\">Wired<\/a> suggests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parts of the US are looking to seed clouds to stave off droughts:<\/strong> A number of desperate states in the US west where droughts are increasingly becoming the norm are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/mar\/23\/us-stated-cloud-seeding-weather-modification\">now considering turning to the technology<\/a> to ease the stress on water supplies. Idaho has already been at it for years, spending upwards of USD 3 mn annually on cloud seeding since 2003 to increase water flowing through its hydroelectric dams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has growing concerns about water security:<\/strong> Backed into a corner by climate change and the threat of the GERD cutting off vital supplies of Nile water, Egypt is searching for solutions. So far, policymakers have focused on reducing waste via new, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fce194a5-ffbf-4650-ad57-e7c907952ce0\">more efficient irrigation techniques<\/a>, finding new sources of water \u2014 primarily via <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7a706c7f-6b04-48a9-97ec-cf222060b61f\">desalination<\/a> \u2014 and reusing water by building more treatment plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can cloud seeding form part of the solution? <\/strong>Weather modification techniques, including cloud seeding, could be effective in reducing the impact of GERD on the Aswan High Dam\u2019s reservoirs, as well as replenishing water lost through evaporation, A 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springerprofessional.de\/en\/harvesting-the-skies-of-egypt-an-option-to-recover-the-evaporati\/16217522\">research paper<\/a> suggests. Cloud seeding directly above the high dam reservoir could be most effective prior to the flood season in July\/August, while seeding along the North Coast could be effective during winter months, provided a system of wells and reservoirs is built to capture the excess rain. Fog and dew harvesting is also a technique worth considering in Egypt, though fog collectors must be built to withstand the strong khamasin winds, the paper suggests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Egyptian Meteorological Authority <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/241576\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egypt-considers-utilising-rainmaking-technology.aspx\">made some noise<\/a><\/strong><strong> about exploring cloud seeing in 2016<\/strong>, and linked up with a team of German experts to conduct feasibility studies.
