This comes a month after a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2bcf3978-5ef1-496c-aa08-47cf1436e86e\">tragic train crash<\/a> that killed at least 19 people and left 185 injured in Sohag and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3809a015-6d61-4354-b4a9-a6998680c767\">sparked renewed outcry<\/a> over the state of the country\u2019s rail network. BTC and other forms of <\/strong><strong>crypto.<\/strong> David Wallace-Wells (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dwallacewells\">Twitter<\/a>) is the author of one of the more terrifying books on what the world looks like \u201cafter warming.\u201d His latest on BTC? \u201cWe are now spending <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/koush\/status\/1382485115817758720?s=12\">more electricity mining BTC than is produced by all the world\u2019s solar panels combined<\/a>, so <strong>we have eliminated all the progress we made on green energy just through BTC use<\/strong>.\u201d If you presume that most of the electricity used to mine BTC is generated from fossil fuels (a pretty good guess), \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dwallacewells\/status\/1362232684399968258?s=20\">BTC produces a whopping 37 mn tons of carbon dioxide annually<\/a><\/strong><strong>, about the same amount as Switzerland does by simply existing<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How bad will climate change be for our species? \u201cIt is worse, much worse, than you <\/strong><strong>think,\u201d<\/strong> Wallace-Wells writes in a book that the NYT\u2019s Farhad Manjood describes as \u201c<strong>the most terrifying book I have ever read<\/strong>. Its subject is climate change, and its method is scientific, but its mode is Old Testament. The book is a meticulously documented, white-knuckled tour through the cascading catastrophes that will soon engulf our warming planet.\u201d <strong>Read: <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Uninhabitable-Earth-Life-After-Warming-ebook\/dp\/B07GVPFH5V\/\">The Uninhabitable Earth.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s okay \u2014 finance is riding to the rescue: Climate scientists are swapping their labs and <\/strong><strong>field work \u2026 to work in finance. <\/strong>\u201cBanks, asset managers and private equity firms, faced with tough regulations to decarbonise portfolios and loan books, are competing to grab the people with the right green expertise,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-climate-change-finance-talent-insight-idUSKBN2C20ET\">Reuters<\/a> reports based on a survey of job data and interviews with finance firms and recruiters. And while <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b225e3cd-c970-4165-b9a8-5be6977b8a76\">corporate greenwashing<\/a> is a real thing, \u201cmany environmentalists \u2026 say the only way to save the planet is to force big businesses to radically reduce their carbon emissions, and they see the finance world that funds them as one of the best levers.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Qatar could allow full foreign ownership of listed companies:<\/strong> The Qatari cabinet approved a draft law that would allow 100% foreign ownership of companies listed on the Qatar Stock Exchange, a move that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-04-15\/qatar-may-allow-foreigners-to-fully-own-listed-companies\">Bloomberg<\/a> says could attract passive foreign inflows of more than USD 1 bn. If implemented, companies would have to individually approve the increased limit, which currently sits well below 49%. <strong>The move comes as part of a wider trend of liberalizing foreign ownership in the GCC <\/strong>to attract foreign investment and diversify their oil-dependant economies. In 2019, Saudi Arabia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-06-26\/saudi-regulator-scraps-ownership-limit-for-strategic-investors\">removed restrictions<\/a> for strategic institutional investors, while the UAE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-11-23\/uae-abolishes-requirement-for-local-partners-in-firms-national?sref=mmeFTDW1\">removed all local partner requirements<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hedgies just posted their best quarter since before the global financial crisis: <\/strong>Hedge funds generated strong gains in 1Q2021, marking the best 1Q since 2006, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/41228729-2351-46e0-8d67-8003f7fffc0d\">the Financial Times writes<\/a>. How big the returns are depends on who you trust: Data group Eurekahedge estimates 4.8%, while hedge fund analyzer HFR says 6.8%. The gains were mainly seen in funds that navigated <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/98be55c7-42e5-4672-9457-a72112711a70\">the GameStop short squeeze<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/31075772-f30b-4304-948c-a2e478d26365\">the Archegos Capital meltdown<\/a>. The rebound in cheap \u201cvalue stocks,\u201d a tailwind in stocks and bouts of volatility provided hedge funds with the chance to take positions against overpriced stocks. \u201c<strong>We\u2019re going into a market environment that is going to be more fertile for most active trading strategies<\/strong>, whereas for most of the past decade buying and holding the index was the best thing to do,\u201d Aaron Smith, founder of hedge fund Pecora Capital, told FT. In 1Q2020, hedge funds slumped 11.6% due to covid\u2019s effect on equity and risky markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are the Tokyo Olympics about to be cancelled?<\/strong> The games hang in the balance after an official from Japan\u2019s ruling party suggested the event could be canceled if the country\u2019s battle with the coronavirus becomes too dire. The comments by secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party came a day after Japan started its 100 day countdown for the event. <strong>Another option is to hold the events without any spectators<\/strong>, suggested Taro Kono, the government minister in charge of Japan\u2019s vaccine rollout. He said it\u2019s likely that the Olympics will have to be held in empty venues, particularly as cases surge across the country. Ahmed\u2019s career included stints as the head of Dar El Hilal Publishing House and as editor-in-chief of Al Musawar magazine for 24 years. He was also elected head of the Journalists\u2019 Syndicate five times from 1989 until 2009 and served as a member of the Shura Council (the former upper house of parliament) for four consecutive terms. The flick takes place at the same time as the 2020 presidential election, with Borat making it a point to approach (and annoy) many Democrats and Republicans. The plot of the mockumentary follows Borat and his daughter Tutar (played by Maria Bakalova), who is to be offered as a bride to Vice President Mike Pence as a way to curry favour with Washington. We\u2019ve been a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen since the first Borat film and The Dictator, and this film is a great rendition of those characters with the addition of current events. Sodic appears to have made the hire <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/327297b3-eace-4663-a9d5-45193a9a6bb0\">last week<\/a> to assess the value offered by the Emirati real estate firm. Sodic\u2019s board also approved kicking off the due diligence process from Aldar\u2019s side as well as appointing another independent financial adviser. Aldar <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/65445c53-bf8c-4144-8e37-6daa4e7031c0\">had previously submitted a non-binding offer<\/a> to acquire at least 51% of Sodic\u2019s shares at EGP 18-19 apiece. The offer\u2019s midpoint price values the company at EGP 6.6 bn, and was at a 14% premium above Sodic shares\u2019 closing price at the time the bid was made. Sodic shares closed today at EGP 16.00 apiece.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sodic\u2019s largest shareholder appears to have an open mind<\/strong> and is exploring all possibilities, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/327297b3-eace-4663-a9d5-45193a9a6bb0\">it said last month<\/a>. The consortium of Act Financial, Hassan Allam Properties and Concrete Plus Engineering and Construction, holds a 15% stake in Sodic. As with every year, some of these are groundbreaking, some are funny, some of these fall flat, but this year\u2019s selection has to be the most musical we\u2019ve seen in a while.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You go ahead and try to hit \u201cskip\u201d every 2 minutes on Youtube<\/strong> \u2014 we\u2019ve curated a selection of ads that caught our eye. And to save your colleagues the annoyance of humming a lot of this year\u2019s ads (you\u2019ve been warned), we advise you to check them out once, and move on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zed\u2019s Ramadan campaign is quite catchy. <\/strong>The song sees residents of Zed Sheikh Zayed and Zed East (New Cairo) fight over who will visit whom. If you have friends on the other side of Cairo, we\u2019re sure you\u2019ll relate to the \u2018la2, la2, la2\u2019 in the ad. The advertisement features some of the biggest names in the industry including Nelly Karim, Youssra, Kareem Abdel Aziz, Dina El Sherbini, and Sherine Reda as well as footballerrs Ahmed Hossam Mido, Hazem Emam, Seif Zaher, and Mohamed Zidan (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UgiYG0XcvVE\">watch, runtime: 02:01<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also in real estate, Amr Diab made an original song for the Palm Hills Badya Ramadan <\/strong><strong>campaign<\/strong>, which follows a woman as she goes through the compound and all its amenities (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/CNmtlnrnMJn\/?igshid=1ggj6q4ieox6z\">watch, runtime: 01:31<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asser Yassin and Myriam Fares are featured in a beachside advertisement for Zahra in <\/strong><strong>New Alamein <\/strong>that makes us nostalgic for summer vibes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/CNnFlIeFOyr\/?igshid=8nlkwx0fp4zw\">watch, runtime: 02:04<\/a>). It\u2019s the first time we\u2019ve heard Asser sing and he\u2019s not half bad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Telecoms got off to a strong Ramadan, with Sherihan making her comeback with <\/strong><strong>Vodafone\u2019s Ramadan 2021 campaign after over 20 years of being off the air.<\/strong> The cinematography and music in the ad was great, and Sherihan managed some rad dance moves, with the ad seeming to depict the challenges and struggles of Sherihan\u2019s own experiences. While it\u2019s not Vodafone\u2019s usual Ramadan-themed ad, the actress offers message of resilience and strength amid hardships \u2014 not irrelevant in this pandemic age. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-ykjOYoOZq8\">watch, runtime: 03:50<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Telecom Egypt went all meta with their campaign this year<\/strong>, going behind the scenes to watch Amy Samir Ghanem struggle to memorize her lines for the ad while a producer jumps in and unsuccessfully tries to break it down for her. It\u2019s not great, but (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QqnR5F8rN3U\">watch, runtime: 01:23<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orange has Hussain Al Jassmi singing its Ramadan ad this year. <\/strong>The commercial features a quick editing of shots depicting the holy month in all its glory in Egypt, from family gatherings and food boxes for the needy, to gorgeous shots of Ramadan decorations on the street (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7IULnJxDxjY\">watch, runtime: 02:08<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coca Cola\u2019s ad has a call to action (again): give a can of the soft drink to a stranger<\/strong>, with the VO explaining how everyone is a stranger before they become friends over a bottle of Coca Cola \u2014 a message harkening back to the iconic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1VM2eLhvsSM\">I Want To Buy The World A Coke<\/a>\u201d campaign. We like the Cairokee song in the background (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZVVM8O-9D3I\">watch, runtime: 01:15<\/a>), even if we\u2019re not down with diabetes in a bottle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resiliency through\u2026 boxers?<\/strong> Cottonil couldn\u2019t give up the chance to make a bang, bringing in Hassan Shakoush, Omar Kamal, and of course, Medhat Shalaby to say his (in)famous \u201cHala Hala 3al Fanela.\u201d We have to give them credit though, they do try to portray the need to be resilient and they did reel in their usual stunts to a large degree this year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oxZJgJkv26k\">watch, runtime: 00:45<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unionaire left the usual Ramadan ads behind completely and opted for a romance-filled <\/strong><strong>ad <\/strong>to depict the appliances group\u2019s 25 years in Egypt. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bBpFnqobEH8\">watch, runtime: 01:30<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dina El Sherbini and Ruby turn up the sass in Fresh\u2019s elaborate ad<\/strong> \u2014 which at one point reminds us of an old NSYNC music video (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=97x80A5wbkg\">watch, runtime: 01:19<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Banque Misr combined the best of both worlds, with both the resilience and Ramadan <\/strong><strong>themes present <\/strong>in an advertisement well-sung by Mahmoud El Esseily, Medhat Saleh, and Diab. We\u2019re a fan of the editing and cinematography of this campaign (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xDMsDCem80U\">watch, runtime: 02:33<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s 500500 Hospital for Cancer Treatment has created two ads featuring Lina Shaker <\/strong><strong>and Sherif Madkour \u2014 who are both cancer survivors<\/strong> \u2014 to promote the new 500500 hospital. Madkour talks about the importance of having a positive environment for cancer patients (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/500500egypt\/videos\/2893823640858830\">watch, runtime: 01:17<\/a>).
