His ouster this week was \u201ca loss for those who prized the 57-year-old as a powerful advocate of the view that <strong>businesses must become more sustainable and forge a purpose alongside making profits<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>In a similar vein: TAQA<\/strong> (the Abu Dhabi utility, not Qalaa\u2019s Egypt-based outfit) <strong>may be looking <\/strong><strong>to get out of the oil and gas businesses<\/strong>, burnishing its ESG credentials a little bit while simultaneously doubling down on power generation, according to one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-17\/abu-dhabi-utility-taqa-said-to-weigh-sale-of-oil-and-gas-assets?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>\u2019s top stories out of the region today.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-05\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Pundits think the Fed is going to signal an improved economic outlook for the United <\/strong><strong>States <\/strong>when its Federal Open Markets Committee wraps up its two-day meeting later today. A significant improvement to the Fed\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/12\/16\/fed-raises-its-economic-outlook-slightly-sees-4point2percent-growth-next-year-and-5percent-unemployment-rate.html#:~:text=Menu-,Fed%20raises%20its%20economic%20outlook%20slightly%2C%20sees%204.2%25%20growth%20next,year%20and%205%25%20unemployment%20rate&text=The%20Federal%20Reserve%20expects%20real,to%204.2%25%20from%204.0%25.\">December prediction<\/a> could test the central bank\u2019s commitment to ultra-loose policy in the coming years, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3d7704d3-a312-4294-95bc-90233f469ccd\">the Financial Times<\/a>. <strong>No one is hanging their hats on considerable policy changes<\/strong>, but a more upbeat outlook will get investors talking about when to expect a rate hike. Pundits in December figured the Fed would start hiking rates by 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will tightening come sooner? <\/strong>Some, including Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius, are saying it could happen as early as 2023 as US policymakers signal a rosier outlook. The new research has shown that soil degradation (caused by a warming planet) and forest fires set by ranchers and industrialists have contributed to the release of dangerous, less popularized, greenhouse gasses like nitrous oxide and black carbon from the forest. The release of these gasses into the atmosphere has a compounding effect where it both contributes to and is accelerated by a warming planet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The International Air Transportation Association could see its members commit to a net <\/strong><strong>zero carbon pledge by 2050, <\/strong>considerably ramping up the industry group\u2019s 2005 pledge to decarbonize by cutting net emissions in half by 2050, IATA chief executive Alexandre de Juniac told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4d3f943a-b386-4e33-af2e-015777c05849\">the Financial Times<\/a>. Some tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose <strong>Register for Vaccination<\/strong> from the homepage.<\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong>Other Categories <\/strong>unless you\u2019re an MD or healthcare worker and if you don\u2019t have a chronic condition,.<\/li>\n<li>If at any stage you input that you have one or more health conditions (which you can still do if you choose Other Categories), <strong>you may need to <\/strong><strong>have documents on hand<\/strong> to substantiate it and be ready to upload them.<\/li>\n<li>Have a copy of your <strong>national ID or passport<\/strong> information page ready to upload. It can\u2019t be more than 5 MB and must be a .jpg or .png file.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have your mobile at hand<\/strong> \u2014 you\u2019ll get a six-digit verification code as you complete the first screen and will need to input it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The final screen will give you your request number<\/strong>, and you should also receive a copy of the number on by SMS. The report gave no reason for the delay; the SFE was not available for comment by dispatch time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But that doesn\u2019t mean progress isn\u2019t being made: <\/strong>Potential buyer Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has begun appointing advisors ahead of submitting an offer, sources said, though no further details were given on the size of the stake the company is targeting. Soliman had suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8bf2d27d-4b0d-4e69-9be1-fa611522c218\">last month<\/a> that up to 90% of the company could be up for sale through a private placement, with the SFE retaining a 10-20% stake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This comes as other GCC players look to buy in,<\/strong> with reports earlier this month suggesting that state-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enoc.com\/en\/\">Emirates National Oil Company<\/a> (ENOC) and Saudi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aldrees.com\/english\/\">Aldrees Petroleum and Transport Services Co.<\/a> were also interested. Armed with USD 24 mn in venture capital financing \u2014 including the USD 15 mn raised in series A funding last February \u2014 the startup is now beginning to commercialize its invention: <strong>a low-cost substance made of waste plant fibers that mimics both the taste and texture of real sugar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the hunger for sugar substitutes<\/strong>? Climate change poses risks to the availability of sugar \u2014 a big consumer of water \u2014 due to the likelihood of increasing deforestation in some of the world's most threatened ecosystems such as Brazil, as well as warnings of growing water scarcity. And existing sugar substitutes have brought their own health issues: the use of corn syrup as a replacement to sugar has been linked to rising diabetes and obesity rates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What gives it the edge?<\/strong> The new product, which received preliminary approvals from the European Medicines Agency, doesn\u2019t only act as a sweetener but as a probiotic with health benefits such as increasing fiber in regular consumers. Despite the fact that asset managers have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8bc4a5a0-d5dd-437e-8cea-b737746d57f6\">unanimous in their praise<\/a> and bullish outlook on EM equities, only 13% of EM sovereign and corporate bonds are included in major indices, meaning that the majority of EM equities remain off the radar for passive investors and exchange traded funds, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashmoregroup.com\/insights\/research\/em-fixed-income-universe-version-90\">report<\/a>by EM-focused research house Ashmore found.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local currency corporate EM bonds are a particular blind spot<\/strong>, with only 2% of the estimated USD 12.5 tn in issuances in 2019 included in the ICE BofA Diversified Local EM Non-Sovereign Index. Local currency government bonds fared slightly better, with 11% inclusion on JPMorgan\u2019s GBI EM Global Diversified index. <strong>Egypt could potentially be joining JPMorgan\u2019s index soon<\/strong> along with Ukraine, India, Nigeria, and Serbia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This funneling of investments is creating a double edged risk:<\/strong> A lack of diversification could leave EM investors with portfolios susceptible to sudden shifts, while a concentration of investments into a narrow segment of the market leaves those markets vulnerable to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f85862cc-75c8-4f46-b605-c6f11ad400d1\">potential outflows<\/a> knocking out their economy.
