The companies, all of whom are large taxpayers, will be joined by other players gradually through 30 June. The program launched last November. Any company that falls under the jurisdiction of the Tax Authority\u2019s large taxpayer office will face sanctions if they don\u2019t sign up for e-invoicing by 1 July 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is this e-invoicing system, you ask?<\/strong> We have a primer on the system, including its purpose, the timeline for implementation and a list of phase one companies <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/99a6ca73-945a-43a8-9bb3-70e01e484a6c\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD? <\/strong>No single story is driving the global business news agenda with US and Canadian markets in the midst of national holidays. A lot of them aren\u2019t doing as well academically. With depression also comes weight gain. Clubhouse is invite only \u2014 you can\u2019t just download it off the app store and create an account, instead you have to be invited to join by an existing member (who will only have two invites available). While the app launched in March 2020, Clubhouse gained popularity recently after Elon Musk held a conversation with Robinhood Markets CEO Vladimir Tenev on the platform. It\u2019s \u201cearly to point to a date or something like that, but clearly our intent is to focus our outward growth into Egypt on the development side of the business and deploy meaningful capital there,\u201d he added. <strong>The company confirmed in <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adxservices.adx.ae\/WebServices\/DataServices\/contentDownload.aspx?doc=2277125\">a regulatory filing<\/a><\/strong> that it is considering a move to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How big could this potential investment be? <\/strong>The announcement follows the release of its <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3rW5Wve\">earnings (pdf)<\/a>, which showed that it has offloaded more than USD 272.2 mn in assets. Aldar\u2019s treasury department is ready to fund any potential acquisitions, said Fewer. That said, the company feels it is still premature to set a target, he noted, adding that they\u2019re monitoring the market for value and opportunity, which could be, at any kind of size.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is Damac Properties also eyeing an Egypt investment?<\/strong> UAE property giant Damac Properties is reportedly studying an investment in Egypt and has conducted feasibility studies for such a move, an unnamed source reportedly told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jXbqmL\">Al Mal<\/a>. The study apparently singled out the New Administrative Capital as the likeliest opportunity. The House Industry Committee approved last Friday a bill that would amend law 70 \/ 2019 to extend the current board\u2019s term for yet another six-month period, giving it a legal umbrella under which to operate and a framework from which to hold elections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The back story: <\/strong>In May 2019, a new law regulating the FEI passed the House, while the board of the government-approved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fei.org.eg\/index.php\/en\/\">\u201cvoice of industry in Egypt\u201d<\/a> was given a one-year extension of their term in office. That gave them until September 2020 to wait for the executive regulations to the FEI Act and subsequently call elections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened? <\/strong>In a word: Corona. Revenues rose to more than EGP 4 bn, compared to EGP 3.75 bn in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MARKET MOVING NEWS- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bidding war for ANFI intensifies:<\/strong> A consortium of investors that includes Egyptian businessman Ahmed El Saba and Saudi Arabia\u2019s Mostafa El Humeidan has made a bid to acquire 75-90% stake in Alexandria National Company for Financial Investments (ANFI) at a price of EGP 7.48 per share, ANFI announced today in <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/2\/257602_1.pdf\">a bourse filing (pdf)<\/a>. This is the third offer to acquire the brokerage house in as many months, after <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f9c4b03c-7e07-4ed4-ba5f-048a3454ec51\">Zeta Investments<\/a> submitted an offer to purchase 90% of ANFI at EGP 5.51 per share, and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5e92d627-df3f-439a-b32a-8f7183ef4cd6\">Kayan Sustainable Development<\/a>, which is also looking to buy 90% of the firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who owns what?<\/strong> KWIN currently owns some 40% of ANFI\u2019s shares, while ADIB directly holds 9%. Sweden also tested its e-krona <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-cenbank-digital-sweden-idUSKBN20E26G\">last year<\/a> and is working on a feasibility study that will be complete in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bahamas became the first country in the world to roll out a central bank digital <\/strong><strong>currency<\/strong>, known as the Sand USD, <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/the-bahamas-launches-world-s-first-cbdc-the-sand-dollar\">last October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what is it?<\/strong> A central bank digital currency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/central-bank-digital-currency-cbdc.asp\">CBDC<\/a>) is a digital token or instrument that can be used for payments or a stable asset and is part of central bank-controlled money supply \u2014 which includes regular paper notes, coins, and bonds. Just like paper banknotes have serial numbers to make them trackable and confirm their authenticity, each CBDC unit has a distinguishing feature for the same purpose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not BTC, but many CBDCs are largely based on the same principles and blockchain <\/strong><strong>technology as is BTC<\/strong>, distributed ledger technology (DLT). DLT is a way to keep track of financial records: \u201cInstead of one central database storing all the financial records of people, DLT is composed of several copies of this transaction history, each stored and managed by a separate financial entity, and usually managed from the top by the country\u2019s central bank. These financial entities share DLT together in a distributed manner,\u201d explains Coindesk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An important difference between CBDCs and BTC is the fact that there\u2019s no \u201ccentral <\/strong><strong>authority\u201d in charge of Bitcoin<\/strong> or other similar cryptocurrencies, which (naturally) doesn\u2019t sit well with a traditional central bank. BTC and other cryptocurrencies use a blockchain that is \u201cpermissionless,\u201d meaning anybody can access the system and participate in making transactions. CBDCs use a \u201cpermissioned\u201d blockchain that assigns certain levels of permissions and controls to each entity that is allowed to access the blockchain, making it more tightly regulated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In essence, CBDCs bring the best of traditional banking and cryptocurrencies:<\/strong> Crypto enjoys a level of convenience and security because of its digital form that cash does not. But cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin operate without central regulation, which \u2014 among other things \u2014 makes the currency price susceptible to major price fluctuations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The upsides:<\/strong> A significant perk of using CBDC is the move away from cash, which is difficult to track and regulate, therefore making it the tool of choice for criminal activity and laundering. Relying less on cash could also cut back on costs to produce paper banknotes and coins for central authorities, and would also fund transfers less costly for users. \u201cThe idea is that with a CBDC, financial entities are more connected, making a smoother way to move money around than the disjointed financial system that\u2019s in place today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The downsides:<\/strong> Swedish bankers, for one, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-sweden-banks-digital-currency-idUSKBN29A1HV\">are concerned<\/a> that the introduction of the e-currency will create \u201can identity crisis\u201d for traditional banks by allowing people to bypass commercial banks and potentially drying up the banking system\u2019s main source of income. This view is amplified by the rollout of vaccination programs in the US and other major economies, which will reverberate and have spillover effects on EM and FM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The expected upsides:<\/strong> Biden\u2019s anticipated easing of Trump-era trade tensions and reversal of FDI flows back towards emerging and frontier markets are expected to help drive up EM FX strength and suppress their inflation and interest rates, which <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8c2facb0-b5e1-42dd-aafc-6804b7f7bc76\">Renaissance Capital said<\/a> in November will spur faster growth and attract more money. Standard & Poor\u2019s echoed the same sentiment, saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/_assets\/documents\/ratings\/research\/100047824.pdf\">last month (pdf)<\/a> that investor appetite for EM is growing on the back of the election results, with the expectation of more stable and predictable policies under the Biden administration. \u201cThis is leading to a rise in capital flows to EMs, alongside appreciating currencies and easing of financing conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some pundits don\u2019t think that Biden is actually going to undo all of Trump\u2019s protectionist <\/strong><strong>policies<\/strong>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schroders.com\/en\/us\/institutional\/insights\/economic-views3\/what-president-biden-means-for-emerging-markets\/\">Schroders<\/a>\u2019 senior emerging markets economist David Rees, who says these policies \u2014 particularly as they pertain to China \u2014 are more popular among both Republicans and Democrats. That being said, Rees does see a \u201creturn to more traditional and predictable policymaking\u201d and a departure from \u201csocial media diplomacy\u201d under Biden\u2019s helm, which is expected to bolster investor confidence in EMs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And there\u2019s divergence on just how quickly positive effects will take hold \u2014 and how <\/strong><strong>long they will last.<\/strong> There was already a market rally at the tail-end of last year, but the bull run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyweb.co.za\/news\/markets\/emerging-stocks-rally-may-falter-by-bidens-inauguration\/\">could stumble<\/a> in the short run, particularly among concerns that the current valuations in EM stocks are \u201cunsustainable.\u201d Based on technical patterns that have successfully anticipated sell-offs in the past indicate that EMs aren\u2019t due to enter correction territory yet, \u201cwith the MSCI Emerging Markets Index\u2019s charts still short of levels that coincided with performance peaks.\u201d However, the spread between where the gauge is currently at and the \u201ctrigger points\u201d is rather narrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s also the risks that have nothing to do with who\u2019s in office across the pond<\/strong>, like the continued rise of covid-19 cases in developed economies and EM alike, which \u201care holding back global economic activity over the short run,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/_assets\/documents\/ratings\/research\/100048107.pdf\">S&P said (pdf)<\/a>. But don\u2019t doxx them: Hand out their name and email in your autoreply (with their permission in advance), but not their mobile or other contact details unless it\u2019s entirely critical or required by company policy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t doxx yourself <\/strong>\u2014 your mobile number or desk extension have no place in your auto-reply.
