Our reward is a pleasantly brisk newsday \u2014 overlaid with a thin layer of worry about global equities as we head into September next week.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>HAPPENING NOW- Global markets are down and US futures are wobbling ahead of <\/strong><strong>today\u2019s opening across the pond <\/strong>as investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stock-markets-dow-update-08-26-2021-11629963841?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">wait for US jobless claims<\/a> \u2014 and look forward to this year\u2019s virtual edition of the US Federal Reserve\u2019s Jackson Hole meeting. Shares in Asia finished down for the day and major European indexes are on track to do the same. Futures show the Dow opening in the green, while both Nasdaq and the S&P were in the red at the opening bell later this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RAY OF SUNSHINE- The EGX30 is comfortably bucking the trend<\/strong>, closing the week up 0.6% (+2.6% year to date).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The annual gathering of US central bankers and policy makers at Jackson Hole <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascityfed.org\/newsroom\/2021-news-releases\/Kansas-City-Fed-to-host-Economic-Policy-Symposium-online\/\">takes<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascityfed.org\/newsroom\/2021-news-releases\/Kansas-City-Fed-to-host-Economic-Policy-Symposium-online\/\">place tomorrow<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Feb boss Jay Powell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/global-markets-wrapup-4-pix-2021-08-24\/\">will speak tomorrow evening our time<\/a>, with analysts expecting him to remain vague on the timing of a potential tapering of the Fed\u2019s bond buying program. This is the second year in a row that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/feds-jackson-hole-shift-shows-delta-variants-ability-skew-plans-2021-08-23\/\">the gathering will take place online<\/a>. <strong>The Fed has a <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/806b507c-3c07-4e93-bc59-763dfeed0e32\">delicate balancing act<\/a><\/strong><strong> to pull off <\/strong>as it looks to start dialing back stimulus, and the Financial Times\u2019 editorial board hopes it uses the Jackson Hole meeting to provide some clarity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are policymakers weighing? <\/strong>Among other things, the likelihood that the delta variant will have a significant impact on the economy, which would add another layer of complexity to the Fed\u2019s fundamental debate: Is the bump in inflation transitory or not?<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO HAPPENING NOW- We\u2019re on tenterhooks waiting to see if we get off the UK\u2019s <\/strong><s>black <\/s><strong>red list <\/strong>of countries from which passengers landing on British soil are required to quarantine. Resident dawg Luna thinks that\u2019s an oversimplification.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- The United Kingdom has rung warning bells about a \u201chighly <\/strong><strong>credible\u201d threat of the Daeshbags sending suicide bombers to target crowds outside Kabul\u2019s airport. <\/strong>The alarm prompted <a href=\"https:\/\/af.usembassy.gov\/security-alert-embassy-kabul-afghanistan-august-25-2021\/\">the US<\/a> and other countries to urge citizens to stay away from the airport for their own safety \u2014 and in some cases halt evacuation flights altogether. Meanwhile, shorter commute times meant an increase in productivity in the corporate world at the same time as workers got more time for leisure and to simply \u2026 be home with their families. <strong>The downside:<\/strong> Cafes, shops and businesses in the cities, who are losing clients and potential workers at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It's looking less and less likely that we'll ever know where covid-19 came from: <\/strong>The team appointed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to find the cause of the global pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02263-6\">said<\/a> yesterday that the search process has stalled, and that \u201cthe window\u201d to conduct crucial studies into how the virus emerged \u201cis closing fast,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/science-health-coronavirus-pandemic-united-nations-f08a2972ae5a59cc425a89a36c3389d1\">the Associated Press<\/a> reports. White called Egypt a \u201cborderline candidate\u201d to be removed from the red list as Egypt\u2019s covid-19 daily case figures remain low.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, he pointed to the low vaccination rate in the country <\/strong>\u2014 currently at less than 3% of the population fully vaccinated \u2014 as well as possible suspicion over the accuracy of case numbers. Other countries that could join us on our bump upwards include Oman, Pakistan, Turkey, Maldives, and the Dominican Republic, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it mean to be on the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/red-amber-and-green-list-rules-for-entering-england\">amber list versus the red list<\/a><\/strong><strong>? <\/strong>Being on the red list meant that arrivals from Egypt were required to undertake a 10-day quarantine in a specified hotel at a cost of GBP 2k per adult as well as several mandatory PCR tests before and after reaching the UK. The amber list\u2019s biggest difference is that arrivals can now self-quarantine instead, also for a period of 10 days. A pre-departure test is still required three days before landing in the UK as well as a PCR test on day two of their arrival and on day eight. Another difference is that an optional day-five PCR test can be taken, with a negative result allowing travellers to \u201ctest out\u201d of quarantine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEANWHILE- <\/strong><strong>Egypt fell two places in Bloomberg\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/covid-resilience-ranking\/?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Covid Resilience Ranking<\/a><\/strong><strong>, now standing at #39<\/strong> from the 53 countries included.
