It\u2019s a quiet afternoon for news here at home and abroad, but the winds blowing in global markets are a little bit \u2026 stiff? Unpredictable? We\u2019re not joining the bears in salivating over the prospect of a correction, but you could be forgiven for thinking that others are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY so far: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>#1- Healthy food provider Abu Auf\u2019s parent company, AUF, will be making its EGX <\/strong><strong>debut in 2Q2022 with EFG Hermes quarterbacking the transaction<\/strong>, the company said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/9\/AUF-HERMES.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a>. AUF could offer up to 49% of its capital, with the proceeds funding the company\u2019s regional expansion plans. <strong>In the market now:<\/strong> State-owned fintech platform and digital payments infrastructure provider <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/172bb5a9-c959-409e-9e3c-1d190d7fd256\">e-Finance<\/a> is pulling the trigger on its sale this fall. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/da9fe7d5-87d0-47a8-862e-64973f50d038\">EGX chairman Mohamed Farid has telegraphed that the pipeline is deep<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We\u2019ll more on AUF\u2019s IPO in tomorrow\u2019s edition of EnterpriseAM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- Egypt inched up slightly in <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/covid-resilience-ranking\/?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg\u2019s Covid Resilience Ranking<\/a><\/strong> to #36 from the 53 countries included, compared to standing at <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/198550d4-df1f-4173-af13-283cf1228a7e\">#39 in August<\/a>. The news comes as government officials continue to suggest we\u2019ll hit the peak of the pandemic\u2019s fourth wave toward the end of October.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>HAPPENING NOW- Major European indexes are firmly in the red this afternoon <\/strong>from Paris and Frankfurt to London and the Stoxx600. Futures suggest Wall Street will follow suit later this afternoon at the opening bell. Here at home, the benchmark EGX30 closed the day down 0.5%. Trading was light, with total turnover for the day down about a quarter from the trailing 90-day average. The selloff is providing the only glimmer of excitement on what is so far a very quiet news day in Egypt and abroad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Brent crude breached the USD 80 \/ barrel barrier for the first time in three years<\/strong>, building on a performance that saw it test that limit yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why should you care <\/strong>if you\u2019re not in the hydrocarbons business? The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/14d4980b-8163-4359-bc4a-fb2b7f7d2c27\">Financial Times<\/a> thinks this is \u201cthe clearest signs yet that <strong>the world is heading into a global energy crunch<\/strong> likely to weigh on economic growth.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-28\/european-energy-prices-surge-to-records-as-supply-crisis-worsen?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Prices are skyrocketing in Europe<\/a> for everything from natural gas to coal and hydropower, thanks in large part to supply constraints heading into winter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things are getting nasty in the UK<\/strong>, where Boris Johnson\u2019s government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uk-puts-military-standby-panic-buying-hits-fuel-supplies-2021-09-27\/\">put the army on<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uk-puts-military-standby-panic-buying-hits-fuel-supplies-2021-09-27\/\">standby<\/a> after consumers drained filling stations of petrol. Officials say that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-28\/u-k-sees-first-signs-of-stabilization-in-fuel-supply-crisis?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">supply to petrol stations is improving<\/a>, but that has so far done little to reduce lineups for the pumps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wait \u2014 it could get worse. We can all starve<\/strong>, warns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2021-09-28\/climate-change-in-brazil-fire-frost-drought-upends-global-markets?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>, writing that global commodities markets are being upended after crops in Brazil have been \u201cscorched, frozen and then dried out by the worst drought in a century.\u201d Brazil accounts for 75% of global orange exports, 54% of soy exports, 50% of sugar, 32% of coffee and 22% of worldwide corn exports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Throw in a global shortage of tennis balls <\/strong>and it\u2019s enough to make you worry that, indeed, Winter Is Coming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LATER TODAY- Fed boss Jay Powell will speak at the Senate Banking Committee <\/strong>in Washington at 6pm today. Expect inflation to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/28\/us-bonds-10-year-treasury-yield-spikes-amid-inflation-fears.html\">very high on the agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLOSER TO HOME- Where in the world is Jake Sullivan?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/jake-sullivan-middle-east-saudi-arabia-231510ce-d699-4108-8bda-5db7f4621df2.html\">Axios<\/a> reported last week that the White House national security advisor was due in Cairo this week as part of a Mideast tour that would also take him to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Sullivan was scheduled to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-nations-general-assembly-joe-biden-iran-nuclear-jamal-khashoggi-saudi-arabia-c14452b0796a13b27065517973e1beee\">meet yesterday<\/a> with Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman. I studied at Cairo University\u2019s Georgia State University joint program and a professor of mine, Hussein Atta, was the one who made me fall in love with the job of analyst. He really directed me on what I needed to do to get there. I started off as a graduate trainee at the National Bank of Abu Dhabi and then came closer to the field as a financial data analyst at Mubasher International. I then moved to Fawry and then Naeem Holding for a few years before landing my position as a buy-side analyst at Azimut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working on the buy-side during the pandemic was challenging, but exciting.<\/strong> Things were changing at such a fast pace and the full force of the lockdown really came down on the markets. We always had to stay on top of everything, but here we are, somewhat on the other side of it all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I cover healthcare, F&B, and petrochemicals. <\/strong>It\u2019s a very diverse mix and it really gives you an overview of everything going on. It also ensures that the job is never boring \u2014 one day you\u2019re working on an oil company and the next on manufacturing. The petrochem sector is my favorite though as there are so many global and local dynamics to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The best part of my job is the rush you get when you make a correct call. <\/strong>At Azimut we always clap for each other and have a mini-party for the person when their judgement turns out correct [laughs].<\/p>\n<p><strong>The worst part of my job is that you can\u2019t disconnect. <\/strong>Everything comes with a price, but it can be a bit hard when you feel that even if you travel to the ends of the Earth, it\u2019s essential to have a cellular connection. It\u2019s also very hard to explain my job to my friends and family, so I usually just end up saying I work in the stock market [laughs].<\/p>\n<p><strong>My theory of investment is to observe what the focus of the state is on.<\/strong> If there\u2019s a government initiative in a sector, that usually causes a big push for firms on the EGX. The same goes for global trends as well. For example, if commodity prices are rising globally, there\u2019s a big chance they\u2019ll grow here as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I always like to put things into context when it comes to looking at firms.<\/strong> I need to understand the industry\u2019s demand, supply, big players, competition, red tape, and growth rate to assess if it\u2019s maturing. Then I look at the individual firm as a part of the overall picture and one of the important factors that comes into play at this point is the management as they are in charge of capturing potential growth in the sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s unclear whether the EGX30 will close in the green or red this year.<\/strong> News keeps shaking the market from the capital gains tax to GERD. That isn\u2019t to say that there isn\u2019t major improvement compared to last year, but it can go both ways given the many uncontrolled variables in the mix.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I think 2022 could be the year of Egypt. <\/strong>Once the E-Finance IPO comes through, it could open the door for more companies to list.
