Today, we have news that Saudi Telecom is back in the hunt for control of Vodafone Egypt. <strong>Not a bad way to slide into the next-to-last workday of the week, huh?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES so far today:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>#1- Vodafone and Saudi Telecom\u2019s (STC) will they-won\u2019t they dance is back on again after <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5e92d627-df3f-439a-b32a-8f7183ef4cd6\">nine months of silence<\/a><\/strong>. Citing unnamed sources, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2XG9bNt\">CNBC Arabia<\/a> claims the Saudi company is looking a secure a USD 1.1 bn soft loan to finance part of the USD 2.4 bn it needs to acquire 55% of the mobile network operator\u2019s Egyptian arm, an acquisition which has been in the works since <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ec10025b-169b-47c4-a0b7-a14f8b6618ee\">early last year<\/a> before it appeared to fall through in December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- CIRA\u2019s board has given the green light to an EGP 260 mn loan<\/strong> from an Egyptian bank with proceeds earmarked to fund the education outfit\u2019s upcoming projects, the company announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/9\/CIRA.pdf\">regulatory filing (pdf)<\/a>. CIRA and its subsidiary Eduhive are eyeing major expansion, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2d873f5f-ebc5-4ecf-8475-24fddbb76127\">aiming to<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2d873f5f-ebc5-4ecf-8475-24fddbb76127\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2d873f5f-ebc5-4ecf-8475-24fddbb76127\">have<\/a> over 25k seats in Upper Egypt alone at K-12 schools and higher education establishments by 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- Egypt has infrastructure ready to store up to 4 mn doses of Pfizer<\/strong>\u2019s covid-19 jab, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/230372589133169?__cft__[0]=AZViiakEK0ugK9-tuxY9WNqIpMn-XdL8knChtUx1HjHIMLtrX3dskMygSt44ng7JOdjwIxVlTF180qutDgqqlI3rgZWL3ghJKUogRPEoteHS5gxL3EAsNvHriMXfplDwffiCfw-TixfNisgUiH912oB4&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\">according<\/a> to Health Minister Hala Zayed, who noted that the country is prepared to receive a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c4462b8b-f59c-42de-b693-7a9d288c20bc\">batch<\/a> of Pfizer over the weekend. The ministry has purchased and positioned nationwide some 600 fridges with a combined capacity to store over 4 mn vaccine doses. Egypt has so far received or produced some 33.7 mn <strong> doses<\/strong> of covid vaccines, including some 2 mn locally produced Sinovac doses, she said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- Global markets are <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9815f997-5eee-4c15-a486-5b8b3b91a48a\">sighing in (muted?) relief<\/a><\/strong><strong> after China <\/strong><strong>Evergrande negotiated an agreement with its bondholders<\/strong> and settled an interest payment on its domestic bonds due tomorrow \u201cvia negotiations off the clearing house,\u201d the company said in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-evergrande-inches-close-default-deadline-investors-wait-2021-09-21\/\">picked up by the global financial press<\/a>. The announcement lacked detail, <strong>\u201cleaving analysts guessing\u201d <\/strong>about the when and the how of the payment, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-22\/evergrande-onshore-property-unit-to-repay-interest-on-yuan-bond?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>, suggesting the company has struck an agreement to push an interest payment while avoiding the label \u201cdefault.\u201d Evergrande is expected to pay USD 36 mn in bond interest tomorrow. Evergrande\u2019s statement said nothing about two separate coupon payments totaling USD 131 mn due tomorrow and next week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most global media outlets are covering the story from a \u201cthis is good for US stocks\u201d<\/strong> point of view as they cast their gaze to the US Federal Reserve, where the FOMC is meeting now. But dig deeper and there\u2019s some worthwhile commentary. Reuters writes that what appears to have been a restructuring \u2014 accompanied by an injection of liquidity into the banking system by China\u2019s central bank \u2014 has \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-evergrande-inches-close-default-deadline-investors-wait-2021-09-21\/\">calmed immediate contagion concerns<\/a>.\u201d The WSJ, meanwhile, writes that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/evergrande-is-chinas-economy-in-a-nutshell-11632233862\">Evergrande is China\u2019s economy in a nutshell<\/a>,\u201d suggesting that the country\u2019s \u201ceconomic model has run out of road\u201d and that more \u201cEvergrande-like mistakes\u201d are waiting in the wings. The Financial Times takes a similar tack, suggesting the Evergrande flap could mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ea1b79bf-cbe3-41d9-91da-0a1ba692309f\">the end of \u201c<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ea1b79bf-cbe3-41d9-91da-0a1ba692309f\">China\u2019s \u2018build, build, build\u2019 model.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lehman? Who said anything about Lehman? <\/strong>The news of what may be a restructuring now has pundits proclaiming that it was clear all along that Evergrande was not going to be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/22\/heres-why-the-evergrande-crisis-is-not-chinas-lehman-moment.html\">China\u2019s \u201cLehman moment.\u201d<\/a><\/strong> Not that you\u2019d have gotten that from the headlines yesterday\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lack of clarity or not, t<\/strong><strong>raders have welcomed the news<\/strong>, with CNBC writing that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/22\/european-stocks-head-for-higher-open-as-markets-prepare-for-fed-update.html\">European<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/22\/european-stocks-head-for-higher-open-as-markets-prepare-for-fed-update.html\">stocks have shed Evergrande tensions to trade higher ahead of Fed update<\/a>.\u201d The Stoxx600 is up more than 0.7% at dispatch time. Shares in London, Frankfurt and Paris are all happily in the green, and futures suggest both <strong>Wall Street and Bay Street will follow suit later this afternoon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here at home, the benchmark EGX30 finally snapped a five-session losing streak<\/strong>, closing the day up more than 0.9%. The index is now down 2.3% year-to-date.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>HAPPENING NOW- The US Federal Reserve\u2019s open markets committee will wrap later <\/strong><strong>today a two-day meeting. <\/strong>Look for word from Jay Powell this evening (CLT) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fed-meeting-will-focus-on-taper-timetable-11632303002\">a timetable for the Fed to taper its stimulus<\/a> as officials try to \u201cforge consensus on how and when to reduce their asset purchases.\u201d You\u2019ll be able to find the meeting minutes and press conference (link + transcript) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/monetarypolicy\/fomccalendars.htm\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- The Spanish island of La Palma is still struggling with an erupting volcano <\/strong>that has been spewing lava and debris for <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c125a0db-c8b8-4ac1-9599-8e49b5e56ff1\">the past four days<\/a>, incinerating houses, schools, and fields, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/canaries-volcano-lava-gushes-towards-sea-eruption-goes-2021-09-22\/\">Reuters<\/a>. About 6k people of the 80k people living on the island have been evacuated and no fatalities or injuries have been reported. The survey explores how business executives worldwide are coping with mental health in 2021 by questioning over 1k high-net-worth individuals and senior executives from Egypt, France, Hong Kong, mainland China, the UAE, the US and the UK, and Singapore about their work, home and health.<strong> The consensus: <\/strong>It\u2019s been a gruelling year with the majority of execs struggling to cope with the strain of managing organizations. <strong>The silver lining:<\/strong> Managers have become much more empathetic to the mental health needs of employees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Execs globally aren\u2019t as optimistic about an economic recovery in 2021,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bupaglobal.com\/ar\/your-wellbeing\/our-research\/wellbeing-index\">compared to 2020<\/a>, with 19% of those polled expecting a recovery in the global economy in 2021 compared to 32% the previous year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Egypt, the disparity is even wider<\/strong> as only 10% of polled executives expect a global recovery in 2021 as opposed to 34% last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt business leaders are more optimistic about local recovery,<\/strong> however, with 20% believing the economy will bounce back. This comes as Egypt execs reported a low concern around covid-19, with only 27% feeling anxiety from the threat of the ongoing pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>77% of polled execs globally reported experiencing at least one symptom of poor mental health<\/strong>, up from 70% in 2021. More than a third experienced insomnia or disturbed sleep, 28% have struggled to make decisions, 30% reported low moods and anxiety, and 24% have been angry. Other symptoms experienced include low energy or fatigue (37%) and appetite and weight changes (28%).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s leaders are doing worse, with 82% experiencing poor mental health this year. <\/strong>The most commonly reported challenges are low mood, sadness or anxiety (41%), feeling angry or impatient (31%) mood swings (29%), and obsessive or compulsive thoughts (22%). Anxiety doubled compared to last year and anger and impatience rose by 55%, signifying that these symptoms are becoming more prevalent in the Egyptian business community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, 92% of them have taken positive steps to help manage or prevent their symptoms<\/strong>, with most adopting self-help strategies such as using mindfulness or meditation (39%), confiding in family and friends (39%) and making improvements to their diet (35%). They are also the most likely to spend some time every day enjoying the natural environment, with 35% embracing their inner hippie compared to 26% of global execs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work-life balance is at the center of it all: <\/strong>A third of Egypt\u2019s execs are working from home more often and 32% are encouraging more flexible work practices. 41% cut down their working hours while 29% are reducing work efforts during their downtime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of all the regions spotlighted in the Index, Egyptians are the most likely to support a four-day workweek<\/strong>, with 39% convinced this would boost productivity \u2014 almost twice the global average of 20%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another silver lining: 61% of Egypt\u2019s business leaders have sought professional help<\/strong> to mitigate their mental health issues. Women were more likely than men to reach out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The emphasis on wellbeing is also trickling down to employees: <\/strong>Some 39% of business leaders said they would increase focus on employee wellbeing and firms are expected to increase spending on mental health support by 30% this year. Half of the companies surveyed offer mental health coverage in their insurance plans while 27% are planning to implement it in the future. The most widely used initiative was flexible work patterns (66%) to accommodate employees' non-work life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CEOs are taking on the new role of Chief Empathy Officer or CEmO<\/strong>, which entails them showing more empathy and understanding to individual circumstances. Some 40% of firms now have a CEmO position in their ranks, with many bringing in people from outside the organisation to fill the new role. Meanwhile, 24% are planning to introduce it next year. The main attributes for the ideal CEO in Egypt were understanding (41%), humility (39%) and cultural intelligence (32%).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inclusion and diversity are also big priorities:<\/strong> A shift towards inclusion in the workplace could take place locally, with 98% of Egyptian leaders planning to increase the number of women and people from different socio-economic groups at board-level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are business priorities going forward? <\/strong>A review of office space and facilities is in order for 37% of global respondents, while 35% want to balance the bottomline with a greater sense of purpose. 35% want more online sales and marketing, 35% will invest in more tech, and 37% believe a green agenda will be a part of their firms\u2019
