The statement was vague on Shoukry\u2019s agenda at the assembly, only noting that he plans to meet other foreign ministers and high level UN officials on current regional and international security issues. It is unclear if another push on GERD is coming in light of the UN Security Council taking another tepid stance <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/373b6a0f-6215-47ef-81c6-20fa7dc4ede1\">last week<\/a> on getting Ethiopia to the negotiating table.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ga\/\">UN General Assembly<\/a><\/strong><strong> is ongoing in New York until 30 September<\/strong>. The general debate will take place from 20-28 September. Leaders from at least 83 countries are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/12\/world\/covid-united-nations-general-assembly.html\">expected to attend in person<\/a> \u2014 in contrast to last year, when the meeting was almost 100% virtual. There\u2019s no word yet on whether President Abdel Fattah El Sisi will attend in person or virtually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> on the top stories from today\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>E-Finance to IPO this fall: <\/strong>The state-owned fintech platform and digital payment infrastructure provider <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/172bb5a9-c959-409e-9e3c-1d190d7fd256\">could become the second company<\/a> to IPO on the EGX this year after formally announcing its intention to go ahead with a public share sale in 4Q2021.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CBE leaves rates on hold: <\/strong>The Central Bank of Egypt\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/751fae4a-b5b0-4438-9f03-71c964e0f473\">left interest rates<\/a> on hold for a seventh consecutive meeting on Thursday. It seems on track to give bondholders a 75% haircut, has about 1.5 mn unfinished properties, and it\u2019s share price in Hong Kong is down about 85% in the past year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE is aiming to invest EUR 10 bn in the UK\u2019s clean energy, technology and <\/strong><strong>infrastructure <\/strong>as part of a multi-bn-GBP agreement signed last Thursday with the UK government, according to the UAE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395302970743\">WAM agency<\/a>. The main takeaway: \u201cFacebook Inc. knows, in acute detail, that its platforms are riddled with flaws that cause harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the claims?<\/strong> The wide-ranging investigation includes claims that a secret elite of VIPs is exempt from Facebook\u2019s rules of conduct; that Facebook knows that Instagram is toxic for teenage girls; that attempts to make Facebook\u2019s main platform less angry and to promote vaccination in fact had the opposite effect; and that top management ignored warnings from employees about abuse of the platform in developing countries by human traffickers, drug cartels, and government actors. Its popularity is evident the world over, including in Egypt, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.careercounselingegypt.com\/en\/services.htm\">career counseling services<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/persona-egypt.com\/about\/\">certified practitioners<\/a>, and a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almentor.net\/en\/course\/MBTI_Personality_Types_Applications\">courses<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/careercenter.aucegypt.edu\/personality-and-career-myers-briggs-type-indicator\">workshops<\/a> putting the personality test at the forefront of self-assessment. The test is so widely used, HR managers have been using it as a standard for hiring for decades, Merve Emre says in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/39721925-the-personality-brokers\">book<\/a>, The Personality Brokers: The Strange History of Myers-Briggs and the Birth of Personality Testing. But is this test \u2014 developed based on theories of the human mind written more than a century ago \u2014 still relevant today?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Astrology for businessmen? Or a useful instruction manual for HR departments? <\/strong>It is estimated that around 2 mn users take the Myers-Briggs personality test every year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.themyersbriggs.com\/en\/tools\/MBTI\/Myers-Briggs-history\">Myers-Briggs company<\/a>. But people take it for different reasons. For Emre, the author of the book on the test\u2019s history, a career counsellor had asked her to take it as part of the onboarding process for a new job. Elle Hunt, on the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2021\/aug\/30\/myers-briggs-test-history-personality-types\">writes for the Guardian<\/a> that she had taken the test as an insecure teenager who wanted to understand more about herself and how to react to her stressors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A test as scientific as the flat earth theory: <\/strong>Like climate change, and everyone who believes the world is round, scientists keep yelling that the test <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2014\/7\/15\/5881947\/myers-briggs-personality-test-meaningless\">lacks scientific rigor<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>with many reporting inconsistencies upon taking the test a second time. In one <a href=\"https:\/\/jobtalk.indiana.edu\/HRMWebsite\/hrm\/articles\/develop\/mbti.pdf\">study<\/a>, nearly 50% of respondents got a different result with two sittings of the test, even if they were just weeks apart. Our understanding of the human mind has developed massively since the test was designed in the 1940s, when psychology was a nascent science. Even Carl Jung \u2014 whose writings formed the basis of what would become the MBTI \u2014 had said to take these personality categories with a pinch of salt, writing that \u201cevery individual is an exception to the rule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The test was developed by people with no academic or scientific credentials at all: <\/strong>Katharine Cook Briggs turned her living room into a \u201ccosmic laboratory of baby training\u201d when her daughter Isabel was born. She conducted experiments and drills using an A-or-B question format on her child in order to find out what conditions allow children to develop into civilized adults. When Isabel grew up, she realised that a similar questionnaire could become a \u201cpeople sorting device\u201d, one that could have multiple uses. She hit upon a major use for it during the second world war, when women were joining the workforce en masse for the first time. Isabel believed her test could help them find the most fulfilling jobs. <strong>The Briggs\u2019 sole qualification: <\/strong>They like Jung.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Happier workers are better workers:<\/strong> The results also seem designed to reinforce positive perceptions about ourselves, as they don\u2019t feature words like \u201cselfish,\u201d \u201clazy,\u201d or \u201cmean\u201d but rather only flattering descriptions as \u201cthinker,\u201d \u201cperformer,\u201d or \u201cnurturer.\u201d The simple four-letter combination also provides a shortcut to connecting with others, whose personality types may match, or be compatible with yours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But HR managers think the test can help them <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hrexecutive.com\/how-understanding-employee-personalities-can-help-hr-build-resilience\/\">evaluate their employees' resilience<\/a><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> and the MBTI can help managers measure different stressors for their workforce, a task which has become increasingly important during the precarious working conditions of covid-19. HR executives have been leveraging the test during the pandemic to measure what causes employees to be stressed, how to cope with it, and even measuring their self awareness during these stressful times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our take? <\/strong>This is a bunch of quackery, and you should simply stop using it.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n
