We hope you\u2019re being happily productive this afternoon \u2014 and that you\u2019re enjoying the cooler weather as much as we are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY \u2014 so far:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>#1- Remittances hit a record high in FY2020-21<\/strong>, growing 13.2% to EGP 31.4 bn compared to EGP 27.8 bn the previous fiscal year, according to a central bank <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/9\/Press-Release-of-Remittances-..-june-2021-1.pdf\">press release (pdf)<\/a>. Remittances rose 15.5% y-o-y in June to EGP 2.9 bn. In 2Q2020 \u2014 during which the initial wave of covid helped trigger a historic slump in the price of oil \u2014 inflows slipped 10% y-o-y, only to rebound immediately the following quarter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- Our first <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eg.undp.org\/content\/egypt\/en\/home\/library\/human_development\/egypt-human-development-report-2021.html\">UNDP Human Development<\/a><\/strong><strong> report in almost a decade was released <\/strong><strong>yesterday<\/strong>, tracking Egypt\u2019s progress in a number of key development areas including investment in human capital, economic development, social protection, women\u2019s empowerment, environmental sustainability, and governance. We\u2019ll have a breakdown of the report\u2019s key findings in tomorrow\u2019s EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- <\/strong><strong>Pioneers Holding submitted a request to register its two new subsidiaries<\/strong> <strong>with the <\/strong><strong>FRA<\/strong> in preparation for their debut onto the EGX, the company said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/9\/Pioneers-holding-demerger.pdf\">bourse filing (pdf)<\/a>. The new companies \u2014 Pioneers Properties and Gadwa Industrial Development \u2014 will focus on real estate and industrial development, respectively, while the parent company will remain the financial services arm. The company had said it plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/88b520b7-0692-46f0-8d18-5843c8a92691\">split into three arms<\/a> in what was at the time a first-of-its-kind move in Egypt. The company hopes the move will create value for shareholders by making its various activities more easily understood by investors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We\u2019ll have more on all of these stories<\/strong> in tomorrow\u2019s edition of Enterprise AM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW- Egypt should be sending natural gas to Lebanon by the end of the <\/strong><strong>year<\/strong>, Oil Minister Tarek El Molla told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-14\/egyptian-gas-to-reach-lebanon-by-year-end-says-minister?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Egypt agreed <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d4c45896-375b-4b81-9134-30471a8c90d8\">this month<\/a> to ship gas to Lebanon through a pipeline running through Jordan and Syria to feed the 450 MW Deir Ammar power plant in Lebanon. The goal is to help alleviate the energy crisis currently gripping the country. El Molla <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/634f611b-67cc-4630-bb21-2239190c9efa\">told local news<\/a> a few days ago that the gas could be ready to flow to Lebanon in the next three weeks. The agreement is still awaiting Lebanon submitting a funding request to the World Bank, while Jordan and Syria will use the three months to assess the infrastructure of the pipeline and conduct needed repairs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Elections for the board of Misr for Central Clearing Depository and Registry are <\/strong><strong>taking <\/strong><strong>place today<\/strong>, the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/9\/EGX-election-announcement.pdf\">said (pdf)<\/a>, with some 37 candidates running for a number of executive and nonexecutive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsd.com.eg\/mcdr\/Arabic\/NewsDetails.aspx?NID=370\">positions<\/a>. The authority published a number of appeals it had received against individuals barred from running in the elections under <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bc39bd64-22e8-47be-bad7-2dc15198bc05\">new board elections regulations<\/a> for clearing and depository companies issued by the FRA last March. The regulations give an FRA committee a role in screening the candidates for election before a slate is put to a vote in the general assembly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK <\/strong>on the top stories from today\u2019s<strong> EnterpriseAM:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Aldar and ADQ launch bid for SODIC: <\/strong>The two companies <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/248e5d41-7c58-42ed-abe9-f67d9ac74995\">submitted a mandatory tender offer<\/a> for up to 90% of upmarket real estate developer SODIC. Shareholders are weighing their options while the MTO is currently awaiting approval by the FRA.<\/li>\n<li><strong>US could withhold USD 130 mn in aid to Egypt over rights concerns: <\/strong>The move is reportedly designed to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e770dbbc-0d53-45a7-b108-7b6258603033\">pressure the Egyptian government<\/a> to improve the human rights situation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Suez Canal Bank and AAIB want almost all of Valu\u2019s securitized bond issuance: <\/strong>The banks are looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7ac9ba15-8ac9-4a02-8ae1-3d317d25c4e2\">snap up almost 90%<\/a> of the EGP 323 mn maiden securitized bond issuance by EFG Hermes\u2019 consumer finance arm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- There\u2019s no single story dominating the news agenda in the <\/strong><strong>global business press<\/strong>, though the looming meltdown of property developer China Evergrande may soon change that. The Financial Times says that the US envoy in charge of talks with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ee113fde-bfc5-417d-b123-2abcf639f95e\">Taliban<\/a><\/strong> is blaming former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani for \u201cderailing last-ditch [agreement] with the Taliban.\u201d The Wall Street Journal notes that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/california-recall-effort-fails-gavin-newsom-remains-governor-11631678768?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">California Gov. Gavin Newsome<\/a><\/strong> has survived a campaign to vote him out of office before his term expired, while Reuters is leading with the drive by US officials to roll out <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-looks-covid-19-boosters-curb-virus-spread-2021-09-15\/\">covid-19 booster shots<\/a><\/strong> this fall. No timeline for when the vaccines could be made available to the public was announced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, the EU is pledging 200 mn more vaccine doses to Africa to be delivered in <\/strong><strong>mid-2022<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/wireStory\/eu-pledges-200-million-covid-vaccine-doses-africa-80029385\">ABC News<\/a>. The EU had already promised 250 mn doses; the stepped-up commitment comes as Africa struggles with vaccine shortages while developed countries rollout booster shots to fully vaccinated individuals, much to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/db01e7f4-20b4-422d-814b-3a64df825c67\">World Health Organization\u2019s chagrin<\/a>. Just 3.5% of Africa\u2019s population has been fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Africa needs around 800 mn doses to vaccinate 60% of the continent\u2019s population<\/strong> \u2014 close to the minimum percentage needed to ensure herd immunity, African health officials recently said. Participants in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSKBN2G918A\">Reuters<\/a> poll also expect the MPC to leave rates unchanged.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also tomorrow: The Egyptian-Libyan Higher Committee is set to meet for the first time <\/strong><strong>since 2009.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/economy.gov.ly\/posts\/4422626667795134\">statement<\/a> from the Libyan Ministry of Economy and Trade says that the committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday 16 September in Cairo. Meanwhile, Egypt\u2019s International Cooperation Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MOICEgypt\/posts\/215000103995229\">announced<\/a> the start of preparatory sub-committee talks ahead of the session. The committee was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/79aafd9e-fa39-4485-ae8f-6b0e08cf4d50\">revived this spring<\/a> following the restoration of official ties between Egypt and Libya.<\/p>\n<p><strong>? Formally known as China Evergrande, the developer does upper- and middle-class housing in nearly 300 Chinese cities and is sitting on more than USD 300 bn in debt \u2014 with USD 7.4 bn in bonds due next year, making it quite possibly the world\u2019s most indebted company. It seems on track to give bondholders a 75% haircut, has about 1.5 mn unfinished properties, and it\u2019s share price in Hong Kong is down about 85% in the past year. In what analysts say is a naked grab for cash, it\u2019s offering new homes for 25% off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened? <\/strong>It took on tons of debt to turbocharge its growth \u2014 and the off-plan developer has since run afoul of new measures Beijing introduced to curb the total debt levels of property developers. That has forced it to offer units for sale at cut rates to clear out inventory and try to keep up with debt payments. Biden was said to have made the offer during a phone call on 10 September, their first since February, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/biden-failed-secure-summit-with-chinas-xi-call-last-week-ft-2021-09-14\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Last week, Greenpeace and over 1.5k other climate nonprofits called for COP26 to be postponed as many developing countries could struggle to attend due to covid-19 travel restrictions. <strong>The conference is due to take place in Glasgow from 1-12 November<\/strong> and has already been postponed for a year due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This comes as nearly all nations fall far behind on goals set out by the Paris Climate <\/strong><strong>Agreement, <\/strong>according to a report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/climateactiontracker.org\/press\/analysis-despite-code-red-on-climate-target-update-momentum-at-a-standstill\/\">Climate Action Tracker<\/a>, with the only country to achieve its goals being Gambia. Seven other countries, including the UK, were ranked as \u2018almost sufficient\u2019 in their promises to cut carbon pollution and policy changes. Meanwhile, the report also found inconsistencies in the majority of disclosures from companies that did mention climate, with auditors failing to note or question the discrepancies. Schools could close again, hospitals will face high pressure, and more variants will emerge, writes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2021-09-12\/6-month-covid-outlook-2021?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> in a far-from-sunny piece. For the pandemic to end, almost everyone will either be infected, vaccinated, or both, experts agree. And despite all the havoc covid-19 has wreaked so far, we\u2019re still not there yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have we already surpassed historical precedents? <\/strong>The longest global flu outbreak lasted for five years and consisted of two to four waves of infection over an average of two or three years, according to Lone Simonsen, an epidemiologist and professor of population health sciences. We\u2019re already at the fourth wave of covid-19, with no clear ending in sight. Covid-19 is also more deadly than any outbreak since the 1918 Spanish flu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expect more outbreaks for a start: <\/strong>Factors such as lax precautions or the flu season are sure to cause outbreaks in classrooms, on public transport and in workplaces over the coming months as economies push ahead with reopening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nightmare scenario #1: A vaccine-resistant variant.<\/strong> As vaccine inequality continues to be a problem globally, nations where vaccination has been sparse are more likely to provide breeding grounds for new variants to emerge. Malaysia, Mexico, Iran and Australia are in the midst of their biggest outbreaks yet, fueled by the contagious delta strain. \u201cPandemics can in fact get more deadly during the pandemic period, as the virus is adapting to its new host,\u201d Simonsen said. Some researchers believe that <strong>covid-19 could eventually become completely resistant to the first generation of vaccines<\/strong> as it adapts to its hosts and mutates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is already at play, with the new Mu variant showing signs of possible resistance to vaccines: <\/strong>More research is needed to determine whether it is in fact vaccine resistant, the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/09\/1098942\">said this month<\/a>. The situation is increasingly alarming in South Africa, where Mu is co-circulating with the delta virus. While WHO hesitates to make such a large statement, researchers in Japan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20210908\/Mu-SARS-CoV-2-variant-highly-resistant-to-neutralization-by-convalescent-and-vaccinated-sera.aspx\">have found<\/a> that the Mu variant is highly resistant to neutralization by vaccines, and is able to infect people who have previously contracted covid-19 before. The study is yet to be peer reviewed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nightmare scenario #2: A new novel influenza <\/strong><strong>virus<\/strong><sup><\/sup><strong>: <\/strong>An even more grim possibility is that a new influenza virus emerges or another coronavirus makes the leap from animals to humans. \u201cThere is that in the background, the risk of still dealing with this one when another one emerges,\u201d warned Kanta Subbarao, director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Influenza.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experts believe covid-19 will become endemic<\/strong> \u2014 meaning that it will continue to circulate in pockets of the global population for years to come. In a poll by Nature, 89% of scientists found it likely or highly likely to become an endemic virus. Some went as far as to say that eradicating covid-19 is so unrealistic that it\u2019s like \u201ctrying to plan the construction of a stepping-stone pathway to the Moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which brings us to humanity\u2019s best option \u2026 getting everyone inoculated: <\/strong>Having a higher percentage of the world\u2019s population vaccinated will lower the chances of variants emerging and reduce the transmission and severity of the virus. The percentage of vaccinated individuals in each country should reach almost 67% to provide herd immunity, scientists have said, though others have said we need to scrap the idea of herd immunity altogether.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are we doing with combating covid in Egypt?<\/strong> Egypt is aiming to vaccinate 40 mn citizens by the end of the year. So far, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1bad8847-6a0d-48c2-8a41-62860df68f69\">8 mn Egyptians<\/a> have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, and 25% of that number have received two doses. State-owned vaccine-maker Vacsera <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fddb4dc9-d0b4-4724-8dbe-13bf5b807ee9\">is now producing 300k doses<\/a> of Sinovac per day and Egypt is also in talks to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/399f80aa-e0a7-4844-bc3d-e92cf954a53b\">locally manufacture<\/a> the mRNA covid vaccine Moderna. While our vaccine rollouts are advancing steadily, restrictions and mask mandates have been more lax even as the country <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e27ff0b0-1a72-4d61-b99c-4c813b6f91dc\">tried to impose fines<\/a> on those who do not adhere to precautionary measures. <sup><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>And then again: <\/strong>It\u2019s highly likely that covid-19 will eventually become like the flu and will require regular vaccine top-ups. But if countries abandon strategies to reduce spread and let the virus reign unchecked then, in the words of one epidemiologist, \u201cthe darkest days of the pandemic are still ahead of
