That\u2019s when international schools regulated by the Ministry of Education open their doors for the 2021-2022 school year \u2014 and our Blessed Summer of Good Commutes comes to an end.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-01\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG STORIES SO FAR TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>#1- Annual urban inflation accelerated in August on the back of rising food prices and <\/strong><strong>transportation costs<\/strong>. Headline urban inflation rose slightly to 5.7% in August, up from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/abf567b4-dda5-496a-8f9a-a388342de376\">5.4% in July<\/a>. Although on a monthly basis, headline inflation fell to 0.1% in August, according to state statistics body <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3DWpcQl\">Capmas<\/a>, it is the highest headline inflation rate recorded since <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/790c7907-afb4-4e0c-9338-260b3db35554\">November 2020<\/a>. Reuters also has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/egypts-headline-inflation-edged-up-57-august-capmas-2021-09-09\/\">story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inflation (both global and domestic) will undoubtedly weigh in on the Central Bank\u2019s <\/strong><strong>Monetary Policy Committee meeting on Thursday, 16 September<\/strong>. That said, inflation is still within the CBE\u2019s target range of 7% (\u00b12%), and we have the carry trade plus the US Fed\u2019s tapering of stimulus to keep in mind. Look to our poll of analysts this coming Sunday for their take on what the CBE is likely to do when it meets at the end of next week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2-<\/strong> <strong>Egypt can handle any tapering by the US Federal Reserve, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said<\/strong> in an interview with Bloomberg out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-09-09\/egypt-has-crisis-experience-to-handle-a-fed-taper-minister-says?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">today<\/a>. \u201cWe are closely monitoring\u201d how the Fed\u2019s decision could affect the cost of borrowing, Mohamed Maait said, adding that \u201cwe are taking into consideration our experience with such a situation. We have to be ready, always.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- Banque Misr will not be selling its 15% stake in Fawry Plus to Fawry, <\/strong>as it sees value in its stake in the company, sources from the bank told Enterprise this morning. The move comes a few days after Fawry announced in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/34e72f65-ee74-42c9-8832-c4013fe7193d\">a bourse filing<\/a> that it will buy Banque Misr\u2019s 15% stake and CIB\u2019s 15% stake in Fawy Plus at EGP 1.15 per share, for a total of EGP 16.2 mn per acquisition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We\u2019ll have chapter and verse<\/strong> on all three stories in Sunday\u2019s edition of <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exporters awaiting overdue subsidy payouts, rejoice. <\/strong>You\u2019ll be collecting this month and next, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3BSLyAg\">statement<\/a> this morning. Exporters who are eligible for overdue subsidy payments under the latest incarnation of the subsidy program that launched in July will receive payouts on <strong>30 September<\/strong> and on <strong>28 October<\/strong>. Maait notes that the new program has been popular, with 1,650 companies signing on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background: <\/strong>Following years of complaints of delayed payouts, the government launched <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5860d554-ec83-4cee-9ae1-d8f1809bacb8\">last<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5860d554-ec83-4cee-9ae1-d8f1809bacb8\">year<\/a> a new program which allowed companies to receive overdue subsidies in bulk instead of in installments over several years, provided that they agree to take a 15% haircut. The current <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5207b7b8-2250-409c-8016-5f52c955883b\">third stage<\/a> of the program will include exporters in the automotive, ceramics, pharma, electronics, and chemicals industries as well as featuring specific incentives to trade with other African countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The government has so far doled out EGP 28 bn since the program was launched <\/strong><strong>last year<\/strong>, Maait notes, with <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3A4B9RG\">EGP 4.6 bn<\/a> in arrears paid out in the second stage.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-02\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>MEANWHILE- Egypt has officially become the newest member state of the Africa Finance <\/strong><strong>Corporation (AFC)<\/strong>, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/9\/AFC-membership-PR-EN.pdf\">press release (pdf)<\/a> this morning. The move may help Egypt unlock some USD 1 bn in investments, Madbouly added. (We have <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d45c8a48-c37c-4a61-a59c-2bb02fd3c762\">background<\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8b44209f-780d-4e54-8cf5-e4ff1269166d\">interview<\/a> this past July with AFC chief Samaila Zubairu.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tahya Misr w Afriqia:<\/strong> \u201cWe are already in discussions with AFC on a pipeline of projects, some of which includes supporting covid-19 vaccine manufacture, working closely with the Ministry of Transportation to fund the high speed train and the Cairo Monorail projects, as well as a collaboration with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt to fund renewable projects, and we look forward to executing these projects in line with the country\u2019s Vision 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Private sector firms hail int\u2019l investments, green initiatives in Egypt ICF: <\/strong>Egyptian firms\u2019 growing ability to obtain finance from international institutions was hailed by speakers in a session titled \u201cDialogue with the Private Sector\u201d at the inaugural Egypt-International Cooperation Forum (ICF) which wrapped up today, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/220462330124195\">cabinet statement<\/a>. Other achievements cited include green initiatives and infrastructure projects being undertaken by the government and private sector as well as the opening of new universities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who presented?<\/strong> A number of Egypt\u2019s top companies took part in the forum, including our friends Orascom Construction, Hassan Allam, Elsewedy, TAQA Arabia. CIRCLE YOUR CALENDAR-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-05\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Israeli PM to visit Cairo next week?<\/strong> This is according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/israel-pm-bennett-rare-public-visit-egypt-498608d1-eb33-4a0c-8b0d-1d83847bd0d9.html\">Axios<\/a>\u2019 Barak Ravid, who reports that Naftali Bennett will make an official diplomatic visit to Egypt next week for talks with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This would be the first official visit to Egypt by an Israeli leader in more than a decade:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The official visit would mark a rare occasion in regional diplomacy and a first for El Sisi. The last Egyptian president to host an Israeli prime minister was Hosni Mubarak, who met Benjamin Netanyahu in <a href=\"https:\/\/mfa.gov.il\/mfa\/pressroom\/2011\/pages\/pm_netanyahu_meets_egyptian_president_mubarak_6-jan-2011.aspx\">January 2011<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/netanyahu-had-secret-meeting-in-egypt-with-sissi-in-may-to-discuss-gaza-report\/\">Israeli media<\/a> reports in 2018 claimed that Netanyahu made a secret visit to meet with El Sisi in Sharm El Sheikh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rumored visit comes amid <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e5919e87-4dc7-476b-b6fe-dfee6aeb4f6a\">reports<\/a><\/strong><strong> that Egypt is preparing a new roadmap to restart <\/strong><strong>Israel-Palestine peace talks<\/strong>, while cordial bilateral relations have recently been on public display. Natural gas prices are at record seasonal highs after climbing steadily throughout the summer as European countries find themselves increasingly unable to refill depleted storage supplies. Much of Europe depends on Russia for its gas needs, but with the country limiting its exports to meet high domestic demand, the knock-on effects are already being felt in the rising price of goods as higher production costs are passed on to consumers. That will worry central banks as murmurs of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/europes-latest-inflation-surprise-european-central-bank-christine-lagarde-11630435183\">global inflation problem<\/a> grow louder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prices in Europe keep notching new record highs:<\/strong> Front-month Dutch gas futures have almost tripled since the start of 2021 \u2014 and reached a new all-time high today <sup><\/sup>after gaining 1.7% to hit EUR 56.2 <sup><\/sup>per MW\/h. Meanwhile in the UK, front-month futures rose beyond 140p per therm for the first time ever yesterday. UK natgas futures have more than tripled year-to-date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consumers in Europe are really feeling the strain of rising prices: <\/strong>With gas prices five times higher than 2019 levels, Europeans, still reeling from the effects of the pandemic, are seriously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/08\/business\/europe-natural-gas-prices.html\">coming under strain.<\/a> Rising energy, food, and industrial prices drove consumer price inflation in the eurozone up 3% <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/23f7d5a7-4516-4618-845e-4bff359ac4f5\">this month<\/a>. In Spain, people are now paying some 40% more for electricity than they did a year ago, pushing many to take to the streets to express frustration. With winter around the corner for Europe, extreme cold could potentially drive prices even higher and force some factories to shut down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UK has already responded by reopening an old coal power plant: <\/strong>As of Tuesday coal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-58469238\">generated 2.2% of the UK\u2019s electricity<\/a> in response to the price increases, despite the government\u2019s commitment to completely phasing out coal by 2024 to meet carbon emissions targets. Gas still constitutes the bulk of the country\u2019s power supply, however, which now sits at 46.5% of the country\u2019s energy mix.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not just a European issue:<\/strong> Winter is coming in the northern hemisphere, and if it turns out to be a cold one, households in the US, which have so far been insulated from the price surge, are also set to feel the pinch. Meanwhile, Chinese ceramic factories have already had to slow down production as a result of spiralling gas costs in Asia, while some emerging market economies could face economic shutdowns and political unrest if faced with shortages and blackouts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>US gas prices are at their highest in more than eight years. <\/strong>Nymex futures gained another 7.5% yesterday to close at USD 4.92 \u2014 their highest level since February 2014. Nymex futures did fall 0.3% today to USD 4.90 as of dispatch time. <sup><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>In some less advanced economies we could be looking at power rationing and unrest:<\/strong> Countries like Bangladesh for example, might have to resort to rationing its power to keep its irrigation systems running. \u201cIn many emerging market economies, even slight increases in retail fuel or energy prices can lead to economic hardship and public unrest,\u201d Eurasia Group analysts said in a 31 August note.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n
