But since it is Halloween, we will start with something scaring fund managers here\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- <\/strong><strong>The capital gains tax (CGT) is getting its day in the House of<\/strong><strong> Representatives<\/strong>, where Finance Minister Mohamed Maait is discussing the ramifications of reintroducing the tithe, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2021\/10\/31\/1476729\">Al Borsa<\/a> reports. Representatives from GAFI, the bourse, and the Financial Regulatory Authority are also attending the debate, which MPs had formally requested <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b928ae7c-41ae-4a04-8cff-98bad2918464\">earlier this month<\/a>. The 10% tithe on gains from EGX transactions is expected to come into effect on 1 January 2022, Maait <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fc92b9f8-5427-446f-a7dc-2960cc4d17a4\">confirmed<\/a> last month, but has been met with resistance from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c2c1caa5-fc27-44e7-951c-36c10bb90833\">fund managers<\/a>, figures in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3a18b5bd-6aa7-41b8-bc36-97b67821b333\">the securities industry<\/a>, and MPs alike. The CGT has been in the pipeline since 2015 but has since been postponed several times, including last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1154689d-294f-4d45-95b4-84a76d67466c\">when it was pushed<\/a> due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PRIVATIZATION WATCH- Misr Ins. Holding has signed on for EGP 15 mn worth of shares <\/strong><strong>in Ghazl El Mahalla FC\u2019s IPO<\/strong>, out of a total EGP 37 mn worth of shares that will be allocated for private placement, Public Enterprises Minister Hisham Tawfik told Hapi Journal. The remaining EGP 22 mn worth of shares will be marketed to institutional investors. The private placement portion of the sale is set to go through in November, the minister said, with the public portion of the club's IPO now set to hit the market <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/65a4c41c-1aae-494a-9c5b-be28022cbb3d\">in December<\/a>, after having earlier been slated for November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The sale is expected to raise <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0332f74e-7f53-457b-baa2-6184452c631b\">EGP 135 mn<\/a><\/strong>, which would be done via newly-issued shares that would see up to two-thirds of the club listed on the exchange. Another EGP 98 mn will be earmarked for sale to individual retail investors, Prime Holding CEO Mohamed Maher \u2014 whose firm is quarterbacking the debut\u2014 had told us over the summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On to the Finance Ministry, which said <\/strong><strong>in a <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3pTKHfK\">statement<\/a><\/strong> <strong>that tourists shopping in Egypt will soon be able to claim VAT refunds<\/strong> <strong>via a digital<\/strong><strong> system<\/strong>. The rollout of the digital system, which will eventually be available at all of Egypt\u2019s airports, seaports, and border stations, is set to begin before the end of the year in Sharm El Sheikh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saudi Arabia has reportedly deposited an additional USD 3 bn in the central bank, <\/strong>as well as extending the tenor of its current deposits worth 2.3 bn, in a move that should shore up our foreign currency liquidity, sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asharqbusiness.com\/article\/28226\/%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D9%84%D9%80%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B4%D8%B1%D9%82-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AF%D8%B9%D9%91%D9%8E%D9%85%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AD%D8%AA%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%B7%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%82%D8%AF%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1%D9%8A-%D8%A8%D9%8053-%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D9%85%D8%A4%D8%AE%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%8B\">Bloomberg Asharq<\/a>. <strong>We\u2019re reaching out to the CBE for confirmation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We\u2019ll have more on these stories and more in tomorrow\u2019s edition of EnterpriseAM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3188r5y\">President Abdel Fattah El Sisi<\/a><\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100069102704325\/posts\/185193630460726\/?d=n\">Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad<\/a><\/strong><strong> are in<\/strong> <strong>Glasgow today as COP26 gets underway.<\/strong> The summit, which will run until November 12, will make climate change the top story for the next several days as politicians attempt to reach an agreement on steps to reduce emissions and slow down global warming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>El Sisi is set to meet with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the sidelines of the<\/strong><strong> summit<\/strong>, the Ittihadiya statement notes. Egypt is set to host next year\u2019s COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh. The president will also meet with other unnamed leaders and politicians in Glasgow to discuss cooperation, as well as regional and international issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On that front, no climate breakthrough among G20 nations ahead of COP26: <\/strong>After a tough night of negotiations in Rome, the climate agreement between G20 nations had to be watered down to get everyone to sign off, making it largely unchanged from the 2015 Paris accords, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-10-31\/g-20-leaders-see-steps-needed-to-keep-warming-to-1-5-degrees-c-kvf4r1xz?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported after seeing a copy of the document. The failure to arrive at tonight\u2019s COP26 opening with a more ambitious commitment will disappoint climate scientists and activists, and could derail the sumit\u2019s chances of success, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/g20-leaders-face-tough-climate-talks-second-day-summit-2021-10-30\/\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The latest country to announce a green target ahead of today\u2019s COP26<\/strong><strong> summit: Qatar<\/strong>, which said it is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030 in a national climate change action plan launched today, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/qatar-targets-25-cut-greenhouse-gas-emissions-by-2030-climate-change-plan-2021-10-28\/\">Reuters<\/a>. The plan will also see the Gulf country reduce the \u201ccarbon intensity\u201d of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities by 25% by the same year by intensifying carbon capture and storage. Qatar is the world\u2019s largest producer of LNG with plans to expand production to 127 mn tonnes annually by 2027.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>KUDOS- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt12444454\/\">Souad<\/a><\/strong><strong> is Egypt\u2019s Oscars pick:<\/strong> Egyptian director Ayten Amin\u2019s film Souad, which received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2aafe358-bdba-43fa-8529-0166e7e04e87\">glowing reviews<\/a> when it hit international screens this year, has been chosen as Egypt\u2019s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at next year\u2019s Academy Awards. better) and is set in a world where the vicious alien creatures who have landed on our planet are drawn to sound, forcing humans to remain silent to survive. If you watched the first and want more, there\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt8332922\/\">sequel out last year<\/a>, and a third installment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt13433802\/\">in the works<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psychological thrillers: <\/strong>Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0032976\/\">Rebecca<\/a> \u2014 which was recently the subject of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81002196\">somewhat lacklustre adaptation<\/a> \u2014 wasn\u2019t originally meant to be a horror movie, but the uncomfortable filming style and unsettling events pushed the film into that genre, and it remains a classic to this day. Charlie Kaufman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80211559\">I\u2019m Thinking of Ending Things<\/a> falls into the not-quite-horror-but-still-creepy category, with the psychological thriller following a woman who visits her boyfriend\u2019s parents in a remote farm, only for the trip to take a dark turn. For the many fans of the 1994 film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0111161\/\">The Shawshank Redemption<\/a>, getting to visit the imposing Germanic-Romanesque prison where the movie was filmed sounds like a dream come true. However, for many of the 180k annual visitors, the biggest appeal wasn\u2019t standing in the same spots as Morgan Freeman but the spooky reputation the site held. The Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society \u2014 which saved the prison from being demolished \u2014 started offering ghost tours, ghost hunts and \u201cprivate paranormal investigations,\u201d on the site, using income from the endeavors to maintain the property. The idea was in no way revolutionary, with other countries and organizations seeing the money making potential of getting people spooked, leading to the coining of terms such as haunted tourism, ghost tourism, or the more widely used, dark tourism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The origins of dark tourism: <\/strong>The aptly named form of tourism involves visiting places historically associated with tragedy, death, grief, or crime. The term dark tourism was first used in 1996 by two researchers from Glasgow Caledonian University, John Lennon and Malcolm Foley, who later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dark-Tourism-Leisure-Recreation\/dp\/0826450644\">wrote a book together<\/a> on the subject. New labels aside, these experiences have been attractive to people for centuries; from watching gladiator and bull fights to visiting cemeteries, human beings have long had a fascination with death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are several <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hospitality-on.com\/en\/tourism\/dark-tourism-harder-better-faster-darker\">types of dark tourism<\/a><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Disaster tourism shows off sites such as Hiroshima or Chernobyl, war tourism entails tours of places where large battles occured, banditry tourism takes people to places where famous criminals ran their operations, haunted or supernatural tourism featuring ghosts, witches, or other spirits, and necrotourism which involves morgues, graves, or other places where people were buried.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The psychology behind it:<\/strong> It\u2019s simple really. People can enjoy a good scare as long as they know it\u2019s in a controlled environment. And in our current consumerist-driven societies, commodifying experiences related to death and danger has never been easier, Lennon and Foley wrote in their book on the subject. Whether through VR-experiences, macabre-themed escape rooms, or visits to dark historical sites, there are a massive number of purchasable experiences now catering to our dark desires.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of the most popular dark tourism attractions around the world are found in Europe, <\/strong>given it\u2019s long history of war and plagues, and its abundance of old castles. The continent counts Auschwitz concentration camps, bubonic plague catacombs, and mass graves among its macabre attractions. But it still boasts several less known spots that ghost hunters claim are a hotbed of paranormal activity including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/travel\/destinations\/europe\/italy\/poveglia-island-italy-inside-worlds-most-haunted-island-photos\/news-story\/54a221461e6526d1cf52f92b7bd87e4a\">Poveglia in Italy<\/a>, which was once a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague and was also used as an insane asylum in the early 20th century. It is now known as the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/may\/13\/haunted-island-poveglia-venice-sells\">\u201cmost\u201d haunted island<\/a>. Germany\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/amyscrypt.com\/wolfsegg-castle-germany\/\">Burg Wolfsegg<\/a> and France\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-famous-people\/ch-teau-de-brissac-and-ghost-green-lady-006045\">Ch\u00e2teau de Brissac<\/a> are castles haunted by their previous female owners \u2014 both of whom were murdered by their respective husbands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North America also has some picks:<\/strong> In the US, ocean liner <a href=\"http:\/\/queenmary.com\/tours\/tours-exhibits\/haunted-encounters\/\">The Queen Mary<\/a> saw more than 50 deaths during its time at sea and is now marketed as a haunted ship that visitors to California can experience. If you\u2019re ever in Canada, the gorgeous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avenuecalgary.com\/city-life\/the-ghosts-of-fairmont-banff-springs\/\">Fairmont Banff Springs<\/a> is home to the \"Ghost Bride\" who awaits people in the hotel ballroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Too [REDACTED] soon? The next dark tourism trend might be covid-inspired. <\/strong>The Chinese city of Wuhan has already been seeing an increase in travelers in the wake of the pandemic, ranking first among domestic destinations Chinese travelers would like to visit, according to the Tourism Research Centre in China, reported <a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2021\/09\/15\/how-long-before-covid-tours-become-part-of-the-dark-tourism-trend\/\">Skift<\/a>. With many people still suffering from the pandemic, it\u2019s unlikely covid dark tourism will arise soon, but given humanity\u2019s track record, it\u2019s kind of inevitable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has its fair share of dark locations: <\/strong>Named after the mn\u2019aire Belgian industrialist who was its original owner, the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ca6e5ac6-46de-4c77-afc2-2b0c4a2b785a\">Baron Empain Palace<\/a> was neglected for years and rumored to be home to ghosts who would flash lights in the middle of the night, writes <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/ghosts-laid-rest-cairos-109-year-baron-empain\/story?id=71539392\">ABC<\/a>. It has now been <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/93b2ebef-5bc6-4dcf-b714-8907ff15a5cd\">renovated<\/a>, and it is unclear whether the alleged ghosts are still around. Meanwhile, the home of Egypt\u2019s most infamous criminal duo Raya and Sakina is open to the public to explore (you can take a little video tour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EK75Yirb3Fo\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Umm El Donia has often missed out on ways to monetize ghost stories<\/strong>, such as an apartment building in Alexandria that was dubbed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/31cotLL\">3omaret el 3afaret<\/a>,\u201d but was demolished in recent years. As a nod to the building\u2019s history, the new apartment complex built in its place hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dostor.org\/3082171\">an exhibit<\/a> featuring newspaper articles and relics from the original haunted building.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pyramids, tombs, mummies, don\u2019t count: <\/strong>Even though they all center around the concept of grand deaths that were preserved through time, their visitors don\u2019t think of them as monuments of death, but as impressive architectural and artistic feats in the ancient world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you don\u2019t want to book a big vacation, you can head over to Airbnb and search for the nearest haunted house: <\/strong>At least, that\u2019s the case abroad, where many homeowners in the US, Russia, and the UK are adding descriptions of hauntings to attract guests to their properties. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/p\/13-haunted-airbnb-spots-you-can-book-right-now-12056832\">Bustle<\/a> has the rundown on a few including cottages, mansions, and bed and breakfasts. Airbnb itself jumped on the trend and now has a worldwide directory of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/d\/spookystays\">Spooky Stays<\/a> you can look through. Not convinced?
