We have a ton of news to get through before we can shift our brains into something approximating neutral, so as we did this morning, let\u2019s jump straight in:<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>#1- OC-led consortium lands new Ras Ghareb wind farm contract:<\/strong> An Orascom Construction-Toyota Tsusho-Engie consortium will develop, construct and operate a 500 MW Ras Ghareb wind farm on a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/10\/OC-Consortium-to-Develop-a-500-MW-Build-Own-Operate-Wind-Farm-in-Egypt.pdf\">20-year contract (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- SFE, Fertiglobe, Scatec agree on green hydrogen plant:<\/strong> Norwegian solar company Scatec has <a href=\"https:\/\/renews.biz\/72906\/scatec-to-build-green-hydrogen-project-in-egypt\/\">entered an agreement<\/a> with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt and Nassef Sawiris-backed Fertiglobe to develop a new 50-100 MW green hydrogen plant in Ain Sokhna.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- Egytrans pulls the brake on HAUH takeover offer:<\/strong> Egytrans is \u201cno longer considering\u201d an offer from Hassan Allam Utilities Holding to acquire a controlling stake in the company after the two sides apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/10\/EGYtrans-14-10-2021.pdf\">failed to agree on a fair value (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#4- Korea is lining up what seems to be a multi-bn USD infrastructure and defense sale to <\/strong><strong>Egypt. <\/strong>Korean media report (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mk.co.kr\/news\/politics\/view\/2021\/10\/962394\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gukjenews.com\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=2326484\">here<\/a>) that National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seok discussed with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi this week a package of contracts that could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A shipyard construction contract in the Suez Canal area for Samsung Heavy Industries;<\/li>\n<li>An additional order from the Cairo Metro for Hyundai Rotem;<\/li>\n<li>Unspecified technical support for the Dabaa nuclear power plant that\u2019s now on the drawing board;<\/li>\n<li>The sale of Korea\u2019s self-propelled K9 Thunder howitzer to the Egyptian Armed Forces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#5- Egypt\u2019s inclusion in JPMorgan\u2019s EM government bond index could drive inflows <\/strong><strong>worth USD 1 bn to Egypt\u2019s local currency bond<\/strong><strong> markets<\/strong>, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mLENu8\">statement<\/a> this morning. This is a more conservative figure than the USD 1.4-2.2 bn of passive inflows research analysts at JPMorgan <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ea858526-5700-49cf-9a6c-4bb9a7b54d2a\">have previously estimated<\/a> could be generated from being included in the index. Retail investors have until Sunday to get their orders in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt and Greece are <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5d58a836-bff9-4fc9-9db3-c2828087edec\">set to sign today<\/a><\/strong><strong> an agreement to build a subsea cable<\/strong> through which Egypt will export power to Greece. The pact is part of the EuroAfrica Interconnector project, which is set to link the electricity grids of Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Four Egyptian security service officials are standing trial in absentia today on charges <\/strong><strong>stemming from the <\/strong><strong>murder of Italian graduate student Giulio Regeni. <\/strong>The Regeni killing has been a sore spot in Egypt-Italy relations since 2016. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/italian-prosecutors-ask-judge-try-egyptian-officers-over-regeni-murder-2021-05-25\/\">Reuters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/egyptians-stand-trial-over-murder-of-italian-student-in-cairo\/a-59498732\">Deutsche Welle<\/a> have the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi spoke to Prime Minister Boris Johnson ahead of the<\/strong><strong> upcoming COP26 summit<\/strong>, according to a release from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/pm-call-with-president-abdel-fattah-al-sisi-of-egypt-14-october-2021\">UK government<\/a>. After vowing that the two countries would work together to make the event a success, Johnson urged Cairo to commit to halting new use of coal and come forward with a Nationally Determined Contribution to cut emissions. The two leaders also discussed defense and security cooperation as well as Libya\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just in time for the climate change conference, demand for fossil fuels is looking<\/strong><strong> to soar<\/strong>, with the International Energy Agency saying in its monthly market report that the natural gas and coal shortages will cause manufacturers to switch to oil, pushing up prices. The agency predicts that the redirected demand could translate into as much as 500k bbl\/d through 1Q2022, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/gas-shortage-forces-power-plants-to-switch-to-oil-boosting-demand-11634200084?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>. JPMorgan Chase also beat analyst expectations with its 3Q results out yesterday. Not anytime soon.\u201d The earnest New York Times columnist Ezra Klein sometimes grates on our nerves, but this piece hits the nail on the head.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The international automotive market\u2019s electrification drive is gaining momentum \u2014<\/strong><strong> and threatening jobs at carmakers that don\u2019t move fast enough.<\/strong> Honda Motors plans to only sell hybrid electric vehicles and EVs in China after 2030, the carmaker announced at a <a href=\"https:\/\/global.honda\/newsroom\/news\/2021\/c211013beng.html?from=topvideo\">press conference<\/a> yesterday. In all major markets, the company plans to increase the ratio of EVs and fuel cell vehicles within unit sales to 40% by 2030, 80% by 2035 then 100% by 2040. The rapid shift to EVs is making the market competitive and some carmakers are feeling the pressure, including Volkswagen, whose CEO Herbert Diess is worried that if his company\u2019s shift to producing EVs is not fast enough some 30k of its employees could find themselves jobless, sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/volkswagen-considering-cutting-up-30000-jobs-handelsblatt-2021-10-13\/\">Reuters<\/a>. The newswire quoted a company spokesman saying that Tesla and others\u2019 presence in the German market has \u201cheightened the urgency\u201d of transitioning.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>Surprise: <\/strong><strong>Amazon does shady things to benefit the business. <\/strong>Amazon reportedly used internal data from Amazon India to copy successful products and then sell them under private-brand labels on Amazon.in, a series of internal Amazon documents examined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/amazon-india-rigging\/\">Reuters<\/a>. The documents, which date back to 2016, show that the company also manipulated search results so that Amazon\u2019s private-brand products appeared in the top three results for shoppers. The statements are somewhat surprising given that the Bank of Russia has previously warned that digital currencies are volatile and wouldn\u2019t be accepted as a viable payment method. Just as the invention of the steam engine revolutionized transport in the 18th century, driverless freight trains are expected to dramatically improve the efficiency of existing rail lines, without the need for costly infrastructure expansion \u2014 and using less energy to boot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But how will automated trains solve supply chain issues?<\/strong> Automating trains can allow them to run faster, and with shorter distances between them. It would also allow trains themselves to be longer (therefore carrying more goods), and to operate in a more energy efficient manner. An EU study found that automating trains could increase the capacity of existing rail networks by as much as 44%, while a separate study in the US estimated that US rail capacity could increase by as much as 50% if newer systems are employed, the WSJ reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The caveat: <\/strong>Most driverless trains are built to operate on dedicated rail systems that they would not have to share with their older, driver-operated counterparts. Integrating automated trains on existing networks that would support both simultaneously would require the installation of an extra system of sensors on automated trains to detect potential hazards \u2014 a process that would be costly, and technically demanding. The potential of driverless trains is also de facto limited \u2014 the trains can only operate on land, but are not necessarily able to go everywhere that trucks would.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But aren\u2019t driverless passenger trains already a thing?<\/strong> Automated passenger trains are already in operation the world over. The first automated rail line was inaugurated in Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/workinjapan.today\/hightech\/worlds-first-automated-driverless-railway-japan\/\">Kobe in 1981<\/a>, and the technology is now used for the transport of both goods and people in various countries. Germany <a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/germany-unveils-first-self-driving-train\/\">this week<\/a> unveiled what it is billing as the world\u2019s first automated driverless train in Hamburg, which will share tracks with traditional passenger trains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But what about freight trains?<\/strong> Australia completed the world\u2019s first automated freight train network in the Pilbara region <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/technology\/2019\/01\/04\/rollout-worlds-first-driverless-freight-train-network-complete\/?gdpr=accept\">in 2019<\/a>, transporting iron ore across 1.7k kms in Western Australia. A number of autonomous trains are currently under development for the transport of goods, with a German-Dutch autonomous freight train serving the port of Rotterdam under trial this month, while an autonomous freight train system was tested in the US as early as 2019, though the country does not yet have an automated freight rail system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt already has plans for several automated train systems: <\/strong>The planned Cairo Monorail project will have 70 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railway-technology.com\/projects\/cairo-monorail\/\">fully automated<\/a> Bombardier trains, and is part of the larger <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/12c82b69-0f0f-40f4-9d83-ae19bdea3ad9\">USD 4.5 bn monorail project<\/a> that will utilize driverless train cars. Though no automated freight transport system is in the works just yet, Egypt also has other plans for an improved goods transport network. The planned USD 23 bn electric rail network that will connect Ain Sokhna to Alamein via the new capital in its first phase. Following last March\u2019s Ever Given blockage of the Suez Canal, the idea was that this network could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2021\/04\/20\/could-egypt-build-a-suez-rail-alternative\/\">serve as an inland canal<\/a> that will offer a quicker goods route between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.
