There\u2019s a lot, so let\u2019s jump right in:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a><strong> THE BIG STORY OF THE DAY: We\u2019re getting another 6.4 mn doses of mRNA vaccines <\/strong><strong>against covid-19 this month thanks to our friends in the United States. <\/strong>The 1.6 mn doses of the Pfizer \/ BioNTech covid-19 vaccine we received last week as a gift from the US was the first of a total of 8 mn doses of mRNA vaccines inbound from the United States. Health Minister Hala Zayed and American Ambassador to Egypt Jonathan Cohen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/240386941465067\">made the announcement at a joint presser today<\/a>. The US will be sending the shipments of both Pfizer and Moderna\u2019s jabs our way this month. Cohen and Zayed both said the donation underscores the strong, decades-long partnership between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE OTHER BIG STORIES OF THE DAY so far-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>#1<\/strong>- <strong>DPI\u2019s USD 900 mn PE fund is the biggest ever in Africa: <\/strong>Including an additional USD 250 mn in dedicated co-investment capital, the Africa-focused private equity firm\u2019s third fund is set to hit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpi-llp.com\/2021\/10\/04\/dpi-raises-one-of-the-largest-africa-funds-at-us900m-to-invest-in-innovation-led-companies\/\">final close with USD 1.15 bn to invest across the continent<\/a>. Some of that capital has already been deployed in Egypt as part of fintech player MNT-Halan\u2019s record-breaking USD 120 mn round and the acquisition of pharma firm Adwia. The success of DPI\u2019s existing Egyptian investments was among the keys to fundraising in the latest round, a senior exec at the fund told Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>#2- EFG announces Ignis Energia investment:<\/strong> EFG Hermes\u2019 energy investment platform Vortex Energy has acquired an undisclosed stake in Spanish solar firm Ignis Energia for EUR 625 mn, it announced in <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/10\/EFG-Ignis-EN.pdf\">a statement (pdf)<\/a><sup><\/sup> this morning.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>#3- Capital gains tax won\u2019t affect privatization program -Tawfik: <\/strong>The state privatization program won\u2019t be delayed by the introduction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fc92b9f8-5427-446f-a7dc-2960cc4d17a4\">10% capital gains tax on EGX transactions<\/a> in January, Public Enterprise Minister Hisham Tawfik told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3uF9ODn\">CNBC Arabia<\/a>. Tawfik downplayed concerns held by many in the finance industry that the tax could impact trading volumes and derail the EGX\u2019s recovery, suggesting that new listings will bolster the EGX\u2019s performance and boost trading.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>#4- Is the<\/strong><strong> state stepping up regulatory scrutiny of healthcare M&A<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong> The government has set up a committee consisting of officials from a number of ministries, the EGX, the Financial Regulatory Authority, the Egyptian Competition Authority and GAFI to regulate merger and acquisition activity in the nation\u2019s red-hot healthcare industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mqFNDR\">Al Mal<\/a> reports, citing unnamed sources. Having held steady for much of the day, the price of Brent crude rose 1.7% to USD 80.6 per barrel at the time of dispatch, though there remained no news coming out of the meeting. Over 600 journalists from 150 media outlets spent 18 months combing through the leak\u2019s 11.9 mn files, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2021\/oct\/03\/pandora-papers-biggest-ever-leak-of-offshore-data-exposes-financial-secrets-of-rich-and-powerful\">Guardian<\/a>, and will be publishing what they found out about the dealings of more than 100 global b\u2019naires, among others, in the coming days. World leaders including Vladimir Putin, Jordan\u2019s King Abdullah, Imran Khan and Boris Johnson have been responding to allegations of nefarious tax dealings arising from the leak.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The global financial press is, so far, giving this story a pass: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/leaked-pandora-records-show-how-powerful-shield-assets-b31daac39800f6a6423e24465df45ffc\">AP<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/pandora-papers-document-dump-allegedly-links-world-leaders-secret-wealth-2021-10-03\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/interactive\/2021\/pandora-papers-offshore-finance\/\">Washington<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/interactive\/2021\/pandora-papers-offshore-finance\/\">Post<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-58775944\">BBC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/nation-world\/world\/americas\/haiti\/article254361683.html#storylink=bignews_main\">Miami Herald<\/a> \u2014 they all have (prominent) wall-to-wall coverage. The Financial Times and Wall Street Journal? Not so much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As you read, do so with a discerning eye: <\/strong>Sometimes, offshore structures are tax dodges. Or criminal attempts to launder money or keep assets out of the reach of a partner, former spouse or court. Oftentimes, though, <strong>they\u2019re just the price of doing business in an emerging market<\/strong>. Just about every single USD of capital that\u2019s been committed to an Egyptian startup, for example, by a global venture capital outfit has gone through an offshore structure. Same with any just about money invested here by an international private equity firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> For starters, because foreign investors have confidence in the courts of countries such as Mauritius and The Netherlands \u2014 which also happen to allow full enforcement of shareholder agreements as written. Easy avoidance of double taxation (not avoidance of taxation) and the easy movement of capital, and enforceability of agreements on share transfer and weighted voting rights are among the many other considerations that make special purpose vehicles (and the like) attractive.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>US lawmakers are sitting on their hands as the country edges towards default:<\/strong> There remain few signs of compromise between Democrats and Republicans over raising the US debt ceiling, moving the country closer to a potential debt default later this month, writes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-10-04\/doomsday-clock-for-u-s-debt-ticks-with-no-congressional-plan?srnd=premium&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. The Senate will vote on a measure passed by the House to suspend the federal government\u2019s debt limit until December 2022, but the Republican Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell is set on blocking the attempt for a third time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US has until around 18 October before they really run into trouble<\/strong>, according to Treasury Department Secretary Janet Yellen, who said that this is the date at which the Treasury will be unable to meet its financial obligations unless the debt ceiling is lifted. Others have said that Washington may be able to last another week or two.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Few people genuinely think that Congress is crazy enough to drive the country into <\/strong><strong>default<\/strong> (though with Mitch McConnell leading negotiations, anything is possible): \u201cThe worry has already begun, to be quite honest,\u201d said one US strategist. \u201cI think the market would get very worried\u201d if Congress hasn\u2019t charted a legislative path forward by the end of this week, he added.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Sense scientists awarded Nobel Prize: <\/strong>American scientists David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their work on how nervous system receptors allow us to perceive heat and touch, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/10\/Nobel-Prize-Medicine-2021.pdf\">press release (pdf)<\/a>. The two scientists\u2019 independent discoveries are being used to develop treatments for chronic pain, including new types of painkillers. The two 2021 Nobel laureates will split the USD 1.15 mn prize.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEANWHILE- A massive restructuring looks increasingly likely for China\u2019s teetering <\/strong><strong>property giant Evergrande<\/strong>, whose debt crisis caused global markets to sink for a time in September and threatened to cause a meltdown in the Chinese property market. Chinese English-language daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202110\/1235627.shtml\">Global Times<\/a> reported this morning that the company will raise more than USD 5 bn by offloading a majority stake in its property management arm, part of a huge restructuring effort to unwind the USD 305 bn debt mountain accumulated by the company. First in line to be made whole in the restructuring are construction workers and homebuyers, one Chinese fund manager told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-10-03\/china-steps-up-efforts-to-ring-fence-evergrande-not-to-save-it?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Foreign bondholders are on their own: \u201cIt\u2019s highly likely that Evergrande\u2019s offshore bondholders will be wiped out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>? Digital fashion can be worn in a few ways: either through an augmented reality filter similar to those in Snapchat \u2014 as in the case of digital sneaker company <a href=\"https:\/\/rtfkt.com\/\">RTFTK<\/a> \u2014 or by taking a picture and sending it to a digital fashion retailer such as <a href=\"https:\/\/dressx.com\/\">DressX<\/a> who will then Photoshop it onto your body.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ummm\u2026 What? <\/strong>Yes, you read that correctly. Digital clothes are not meant to actually be worn but are items that cater to \u201can audience looking to fulfill a different type of need\u2014constant fashion newness for their online persona, divorced from physical clothing,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brookerobertsislam\/2020\/08\/21\/how-digital-fashion-could-replace-fast-fashion-and-the-startup-paving-the-way\/?sh=12146e0870d8\">Forbes<\/a>. Some digital fashion sites have also teamed up with video gaming firms to allow their clothing to be displayed through avatars in their games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The digital fashion space has been booming<\/strong>, if DressX\u2019s USD 2 mn seed round from the Artemis Fund and RTFKT\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/hypebeast.com\/2021\/3\/rtfkt-studios-fewocious-sale-nfts\">USD 3.1 mn digital sneaker release<\/a> are anything to go on. Big brands are getting in on it too, with a digital version of Gucci\u2019s Dionysus bag selling on <a href=\"https:\/\/corp.roblox.com\/\">Roblox<\/a> for about USD 4.1k, more than the price of the physical item. Taking things a step further, Balenciaga presented its Fall 2021 collection within a playable video game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it only looks set to get bigger:<\/strong> In July, Snapchat parent company Snap Inc. acquired Vertebrae, a company that allows high-end brands to create 3D versions of their projects, as the social media app moves to further its AR shopping and AR apparel plans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/7\/19\/22583827\/snap-vertebrae-snapchat-ar-shopping-startup-3d-assets\">The Verge<\/a> reported. Other brands such as Nike and Louis Vuitton are also actively investing in blockchain technology to roll out their own \u201cdigital twins\u201d of real-life products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this a thing? <\/strong>The digitisation of fashion can reduce clothing waste while making luxury items more affordable and size inclusive. Keeping fashion in the metaverse eliminates the need to produce fabric, run factories or ship materials all over the world, Simone Berry, a team member at digital fashion site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnv.me\/\">BNV<\/a>, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/556efec9-c391-4a40-84a0-76231b4ce065\">Financial Times<\/a>. For the fashion-wearers, buying digital fashion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hfgip.com\/news\/boom-nfts-and-future-digital-fashion\">eliminates the worry<\/a> you get when you\u2019re afraid to physically wear something valuable or expensive, while also keeping up with the trendiness of the NFT craze.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s cool in theory, but the ESG aspect might be another case of greenwashing: <\/strong>Digital fashion NFTs run on blockchains that consume massive amounts of energy. While a polyester t-shirt might have a carbon footprint of 5.5 kg, data scientists estimate that the emissions impact of a simple NFT garment could be closer to 600 kg of CO2. Plus, an NFT generates more emissions every time it\u2019s bought or re-sold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s all about preparing for a future where we spend more time in the metaverse:<\/strong> The average amount of time spent online doubled during pandemic-filled 2020 and the world has continued to work, ship, play, and even fall in love online. The increase of online participation will fuel a new kind of self-image that is expressed virtually that offers more creativity and elaborate aesthetics that can\u2019t be achieved comfortably in the real world, head of content and strategy at digital fashion house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefabricant.com\/\">The Fabricant<\/a> Michaela Larosse told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2021-06-16\/non-fungible-tokens-and-the-metaverse-are-digital-fashion-s-next-frontiers?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg Wealth<\/a>. The fashion house sold a shimmering blockchain dress for USD 9.5k back in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The next step: Integrating digital spaces together.<\/strong> An outfit you can wear on Fortnite won\u2019t be available in League of Legends or as a Snapchat filter.
