Meanwhile, US-China relations dominated the conversation in the foreign press.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>The government is not allowing unvaccinated civil servants into their offices as of today.<\/strong> Ministries and other public sector bodies are strictly implementing the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/547cee89-6af8-4e07-8bb2-777f71b1a861\">cabinet directive<\/a> barring employees from entering these buildings without proof of at least one dose of a covid-19 vaccine or a PCR test, according to statements from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3kD7rgM\">finance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/min.agriculture\/posts\/185038457150654\">agriculture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/272926678211093\">irrigation<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MOLD.eg\/posts\/199060179071327\">local development<\/a> ministries, among others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>#1- The House of Representatives gave final approval to the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/91cf3226-5bd2-467e-bf88-05b55aad3330\">PPP Act<\/a><\/strong><strong> today <\/strong>after a number of amendments were given the go-ahead in the plenary session, having received approval from the House Planning Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1e481d6d-5609-4deb-8157-cde1af2d0196\">in January<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3neEsSe\">Masrawy<\/a>. The act aims to streamline public-private partnership (PPP) contracts in fields including transport, energy, communications, and healthcare. It would also add provisions meant to ensure higher quality standards and simplify the tender process through which government contracts with private businesses. The bill will now move on to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to be ratified into law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- It\u2019s a busy day in the world of edtech: Edventures is investing USD 200k in career <\/strong><strong>advice startup Career 180<\/strong>, the VC firm said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/EdVentures-career-180-press-release.pdf\">press release<\/a>. The funding is set to help Career 180 build a new integrated job-search platform that integrates freelance gig site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freelanceyard.com\/en\/about\">The Freelance Yard<\/a>. It\u2019s the second investment for Edventures in as many weeks, after the VC arm of Nahdet Misr for Publishing <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9d08fdcd-daed-4b3e-89f3-fcdc0f60cae7\">last week<\/a>announced it would pump USD 400k to distance-learning platform OTO Courses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026And one edtech startup is acquiring another:<\/strong> Tyro, which offers one-to-one and group distance-learning courses, is acquiring edu-content creator Nafham in a share swap transaction, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/Tyro-Nafham-Acquisition-to-Extend-User-Base-and-Tech-Capabilities.pdf\">press release<\/a>. Flat6Labs, and NXL Partners will invest in a kickoff fund for the merger of the two companies, which the release says will together form one of our biggest edtech firms. We hope to have more details on both of those edtech stories for tomorrow\u2019s EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>CORRECTION- We incorrectly reported net income figures in our coverage of e-Finance\u2019s <\/strong><strong>earnings this morning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On a nine-month basis, net income rose 35% y-o-y to EGP 374.8 mn during 9M2021<\/strong> while revenues rose 59% y-o-y to reach EGP 1.3 bn, according to their maiden <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/e-finance-9M21-Earnings-FINAL.pdf\">earnings release (pdf)<\/a> as a publicly-listed company. We\u2019ve updated the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5ac253e0-0e2d-4a1f-aff4-b82036b3ced5\">story on our website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Executive Chairman and CEO Ibrahim Sarhan emphasized in a call with us this afternoon that the company\u2019s spending in 3Q2021 rose as e-Finance continued to invest in its growth strategy. <\/strong>Sarhan noted that costs associated with the rollout of that strategy hit the income statement \u201cprimarily during the third quarter\u201d as opex rose through new subsidiaries on the back of \u201cnew hires and the development of new infrastructure and solutions to roll out new lines of business\u201d including offerings in tourism (among them for the nation\u2019s museums) and transport. Recently-orphaned Marty Markowitz (played by Will Ferrell) seeks help from psychotherapist Dr. Ike who is brought to life by a very convincing Paul Rudd. Hence begins an emotional journey where the therapist swiftly takes control of the client\u2019s life as effortlessly as a puppeteer with his puppet, manipulating Marty until he is isolated from friends and family alike. Though she had been better known as a writer throughout her life after the success of her novel on the Lebanese civil war <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sitt-Marie-Rose-Etel-Adnan\/dp\/094299633X\">Sitt Marie-Rose<\/a>, Adnan shot to surprising fame <a href=\"https:\/\/whitecube.com\/artists\/artist\/etel_adnan\">as a painter<\/a> when she was in her 80s, and became famous for her small, geometric renderings of landscapes, executed in bright, mostly primary colors. She has published several poetry collections which have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Adnan\u2019s body of work is notable for the variety of its mediums, with the artist having famously said, \u201cit seems to me I write what I see, paint what I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI say that I\u2019m not afraid\/ of dying because I haven\u2019t\/ yet had the experience\/ of death,\u201d <\/strong>she wrote in the opening poem of the collection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Time-Etel-Adnan\/dp\/1643620045\">Time<\/a>. Although MMA is one of the world\u2019s fastest growing sports, in Egypt, the sport has grown underground and in niche circles, with no media sponsorship, federations or corporate sponsors backing it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the uninitiated: <\/strong>MMA is a full-contact sport integrating techniques from different martial arts and combat sports, combining kickboxing, boxing, muay thai, jiu-jitsu and wrestling moves. Fundamentally, it allows martial artists from different disciplines to fight under a more relaxed set of rules. Much like boxing, fighters triumph by knocking out or forcing their opponent to submit. MMA gained popularity in the US in the 1990s, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/mixed-martial-arts\">some sources<\/a> attributing its introduction to North America to the Brazilian jiu-jitsu Gracie family, although others trace its origins to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodyelbow.com\/2012\/2\/20\/2808780\/UFC-144-Japan-mma-history\">Japan\u2019s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodyelbow.com\/2012\/2\/20\/2808780\/UFC-144-Japan-mma-history\">Daidojuku and Shooto<\/a>. Ultimately, it was UFC 1 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufc.com\/\">Ultimate Fighting Championship<\/a> that became the forefront of MMA promotion worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MMA = Jiu-jitsu + kickboxing meets pro wrestling. Sort of. <\/strong>Freelance programmer and jiu-jitsu coach Sharaf Eldin founded Egypt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/atomjiujitsu\/?hl=en\">Atom Jiu-Jitsu<\/a>, which is affiliated with Sao Paulo-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cicerocosthaoficial\/?hl=en\">Cicero Costha<\/a>, one of the biggest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) schools in the world, in January. He explains that MMA players traditionally train in striking (usually with a boxing or kickboxing coach) and in jiu-jitsu for grappling. Sharaf Eldin trains some of Egypt\u2019s top fighters, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/omargodfirst_eldafrawy\/?hl=en\">Omar El-Dafrawy<\/a>. While MMA borrows a lot of swagger from pro wrestling (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=seManlRzR9Q\">trash talking<\/a>), it is an authentic sport with real fights and real art. BJJ black belt and co-founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cyborgbjj\/\">Roberto Cyborg<\/a>-affiliated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anubismartialarts.com\/\">Anubis Martial Arts<\/a> Mohamed Omar explains that storytelling has been key to the growth of the game internationally \u2014 an aspect that is still lacking in Egyptian MMA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MMA first made an appearance in Egypt sometime around 2005<\/strong>, according to capoeira trainer Muhammad Bassyouny. Coach Mohamed Abdel Hamid, one of the most prominent names in Egyptian MMA, is credited with being on the forefront of MMA in Egypt in the early 2010s. He and his brother \/ business partner Khaled Abdel Hamid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloodyelbow.com\/2017\/1\/25\/14356322\/egyptian-revolution-longform-longreads-mma-promotion-struggle-survival-uprising-egypt-news\">started their martial arts journey<\/a> with Kung Fu before moving on to kickboxing and later MMA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it really took off in 2011<\/strong>, with former MMA players and coaches all recalling a pivotal tournament at Cairo University organized by Khaled Abdel Hamid\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/efcevolution.net\/\">Evolution Fighting Championship<\/a> (EFC). Now 37, Abdel Hamid founded EFC in an attempt to formalize the sport, but the sport never seems to have recovered from the setbacks of its early years, namely that it was perceived as a violent sport being played on the sidelines of the January Revolution. He tells us that well-established TV networks showed avid interest in the game in its early years, but the hype fizzled out. Abdel Hamid continues to head EFC and has represented Egypt at the <a href=\"https:\/\/immaf.org\/\">International Mixed Martial Arts Federation<\/a> since 2015. He also heads a local MMA committee and sees a local MMA federation on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EFC and <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/aufcofficial\/?hc_ref=ARTZFho7ut3Srczv8BTgDsLo3KgTCjaPmkMfkKPxBrTO3rdl_ghShkQtCJulSLTb91c&fref=nf&__tn__=kC-R\">The Arabic Ultimate Fighting Championship<\/a><\/strong><strong> (AUFC) are the biggest MMA leagues in Egypt.<\/strong> EFC holds competitions in Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, with its 61st event later this month. The region\u2019s biggest regional MMA promotions are Bahraini <a href=\"https:\/\/bravecf.com\/\">Brave Combat Federation<\/a>, which was founded in 2016 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uaewarriors.com\/\">UAE Warriors<\/a>, and both now act as feeder leagues for international leagues like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufc.com\/\">UFC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellator.com\/\">Bellator MMA<\/a>, says 29-year-old MMA aficionado Ziad El Sharkawy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So far, Egypt has one woman MMA champion: Aya Saeid \u201cSheklesa.\u201d<\/strong> From an underprivileged background, Saeid has <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/641890592\">pushed back<\/a> against social stereotypes and is the only woman on Mohamed Abdel Hamid\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egytopteam\/\">Egyptian Top Team<\/a>, one of the country\u2019s top competitive MMA teams. (Middle East Eye has a <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/641890592\">short doc<\/a> on Saeid.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of Egypt\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e3683636-800d-4aa3-b1db-e7c581499ce4\">six medals earned<\/a><\/strong><strong> at this year\u2019s Tokyo Olympics, five were for martial arts<\/strong>, so it\u2019s no surprise that the sport picked up fast in Egypt. Sharkawy points out that combat sports have long been popular in Egypt, but, as Abdel Hamid notes, sports like taekwondo, karate and kung fu have the advantage of being backed by local federations, which legitimize them and their players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not having a federation means that the sport suffers lack of funding and negative PR<\/strong>, with many venue organizers perceiving it as a violent game for \u201cfetewat\u201d rather than a legitimate sport, according to Abdel Hamid. Sponsors offer services and in-kind support rather than funding, and there\u2019s a general lack of corporate sponsors, Abdel Hamid and Coach Sharaf say.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amateurs looking to make a name for themselves often pay to compete<\/strong>, says Anubis\u2019 Mohamed Omar. Ironic, considering MMA star Conor McGregor was ranked the highest paid athlete of 2021 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/conor-mcgregor\/?sh=633acf3a7595\">Forbes<\/a>, raking in USD 180 mn this year alone \u2014 mostly from endorsements. Abdel Hamid explains that the average game in Egypt attracts 400-500 fans and that, without media outreach, the audience continues to be small.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexandria, Mansoura, Damietta, Port Said and Kafr El Sheikh all have MMA scenes<\/strong>, according to Abdel Hamid, who tells us that a scene is also emerging in Sharm El Sheikh. But if sponsorship and coverage in Cairo are scant, they are practically non-existent in the governorates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not a huge community, but its fans are super hardcore. <\/strong>While mainstream fans tune into big international UFC fights headlined by the likes of McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, locally, coaches, fighters and fans are all part of a tight-knit community that, while growing rapidly, continues to operate primarily through word-of-mouth. Abdel Hamid suggests Egypt\u2019s MMA fanbase is around 30-40k, while Anubis\u2019 Omar puts the number of practitioners and players close to 5k, although no concrete numbers exist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, where can you do MMA in Cairo? <\/strong>If you want to get your MMA game on, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anubismartialarts.com\/\">Anubis Martial Arts<\/a> (El Sawy Culture Wheel, Palm Hills Club in 6 October and Walk of Cairo) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/atomjiujitsu\/?hl=en\">Atom Jiu-Jitsu<\/a> (New Cairo) are pretty serious dojos.
