We have the FRA communicating further on their capital gains tax incentives, updates on our EV plans and the House is working on some laws today. <strong>But before we dive into the top stories today\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s that time of year: 3Q2021 earnings season here at home is in full swing<\/strong> \u2014 and is making its presence known with a torrent of releases out today. We have a rundown in this afternoon\u2019s Go With the Flow, below.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-04\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>PSA- <\/strong><strong>If you\u2019re traveling outside the country, you may have to still get a hard <\/strong><strong>copy of your QR passport:<\/strong> Make sure to get a paper copy of your QR code-bearing vaccination certificate before you head to the airport, as the QR code available from the Health Ministry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1882440c-78a2-4cbe-9027-8779a574d9ac\">covid passport app<\/a> is not yet being accepted as proof of vaccination at Cairo International Airport, according to EgyptAir customer service representatives Enterprise spoke with. In our experience, the paper certificates are straightforward to get from the ministry\u2019s vaccination centers and shouldn\u2019t take too long. <strong>We are currently still reaching out to the Civil Aviation Ministry for information on when the app QR passport will be accepted at airports. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-01\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>#1- <\/strong><strong>POLL- The market is, by and large, reacting positively to the planned <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ec6afc7f-e068-4bb3-86c2-bf392f54ae26\">EGX incentive package<\/a><\/strong> the Madbouly government announced last week. Analysts we\u2019ve spoken to are signaling that the incentives package will be good for the market, but point out that the less-obvious message behind the package is that the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fc92b9f8-5427-446f-a7dc-2960cc4d17a4\">capital gains tax<\/a> is going to be our new reality come January: no ifs, no buts, and no more delays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FACT CHECK- No, there isn\u2019t an official decision on the exact percentages of <\/strong><strong>cuts to EGX trading costs yet. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Dftq4N\">Local press<\/a> reports were out today claiming to have the exact percentages of the tax and fee cuts investors would be getting as part of the incentives structure being rolled out with the capital gains tax. A Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) official we spoke with under condition of anonymity tells us that these were figures suggested by stakeholders and were not necessarily the numbers the FRA plans to make official.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2-<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/brightskiesinc.com\/#about\">BrightSkies<\/a><\/strong> <strong>joins state automaker to manufacture EVs domestically:<\/strong> State-owned Engineering Automotive Manufacturing Company has signed a cooperation agreement with private Egyptian tech firm BrightSkies that will see the two firms manufacture key components for Egypt\u2019s first locally-assembled electric microbuses, according to a Public Enterprise Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/Public-Enterprise-Ministry-Brightskies-EV-Microbuses.pdf\">statement (pdf).<\/a> The plan is to supply the control systems, power units and engines for the 80% locally sourced microbuses, which are set to be prototyped within a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The news comes days after <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6f0f9e19-5e30-400f-8dba-6213afd8fb58\">the wheels came off<\/a><\/strong><strong> a plan for El Nasr Automotive to locally assemble Chinese firm Dongfeng\u2019s E70 electric vehicles. <\/strong>Talks came to a halt due to an import pricing dispute with the automaker\u2014the kind of problem you just don\u2019t have if you can make your own EVs from scratch here at home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We\u2019ll have more on these stories and more in tomorrow\u2019s edition of EnterpriseAM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK <\/strong>on the top stories from today\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Egypt officially confirmed as COP27 host: <\/strong>We will be <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a925d015-f57e-4886-9f6d-db7a15c76bd3\">hosting<\/a> next year\u2019s iteration of the climate summit, which will be held in Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Banque Misr in line for more EBRD climate financing:<\/strong> The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development could <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ed9dfc6e-cb0e-447f-b22e-44d2bdef5f58\">soon sign off<\/a> on a USD 100 mn facility to the bank to finance local SMEs working on green projects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ora plans USD 1 bn Africa expansion + Sawiris pivots to battery metals:<\/strong> Naguib Sawiris\u2019 Ora Developers <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3ba96f78-72ce-4a70-b68f-0af26096593e\">is planning<\/a> to invest at least USD 1 bn over the next five years to increase its footprint in Africa, while Sawiris\u2019 La Mancha gold fund will offload its controlling stake in Canadian miner Golden Star Resources and reinvest the proceeds into metals used to make batteries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW- Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is in the UAE to participate in the Sir <\/strong><strong>Bani Yas Forum<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/272125744957853\">cabinet statement<\/a>. The four-day event is organized by the UAE\u2019s Foreign Ministry and brings together senior decision makers from across the Middle East to discuss issues facing the region, with this year\u2019s edition to focus on peace, security, and stability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO HAPPENING NOW- A handful of draft laws and proposed amendments are<\/strong><strong> currently up for committee-level discussion<\/strong> at the House of Representatives, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/3115448.aspx\">Al Ahram<\/a>. Among the bills are a draft bill governing ministerial \u201cslush funds,\u201d which was passed to the House Planning and Budgeting and House Economics committees for discussion. The Madbouly Cabinet had signed off on new regulations for the funds <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bbc83b1f-79fd-475e-bfbe-b1819957101d\">last year<\/a>, after previously agreeing to channel 15-20% of the funds\u2019 surpluses into state coffers. A new draft law governing licensing rules for hotels and tourism companies the government drafted <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d3b4aa4e-88a8-4a01-b3cc-f1045c1c7402\">in September<\/a> is also on the docket for a joint tourism and civil aviation, local administration, planning and budgeting, and constitutional affairs committee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The COP26 autopsy has continued into the afternoon in the international press, <\/strong>and the overall tenor is that global leaders talked a big talk on net-zero targets and political urgency at the meeting, but their final pledge left much to be desired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The fallout from the disappointing final agreement is ongoing:<\/strong> John Kerry insisted that it reflected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/nov\/14\/john-kerry-cop26-puts-us-closer-than-ever-to-avoiding-climate-chaos\">\u201ca very aggressive increasing of ambition,<\/a>\u201d while COP26 President Alok Sharma (i.e. the man whose job was to make a success of the summit) placed the blame elsewhere. \u201cChina and India will have to explain themselves and what they did to the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world,\u201d he told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-59280241\">BBC<\/a>, after the two nations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c891d4af-f80b-48f0-8b6f-a8763655c936\">fought during negotiations<\/a> to weaken the language of pledges to phase out coal use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did Greta say it best? <\/strong>\u201cThe #COP26 is over,\u201d the climate activist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GretaThunberg\/status\/1459612735294029834\">said on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cHere\u2019s a brief summary: Blah, blah, blah. Set to a montage of mansions, sports cars and suitcases bursting with USD bills, the song promises a world where \u201cNo one can take your wealth away from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anti-China politics seem to be at the core of HCoin: <\/strong>Guo is joined in his support for the currency by far-right talking head and former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon. \u201cIf you look at the institutionalization of the counteroffensive to the Chinese Communist Party, it\u2019s pretty impressive,\u201d Bannon said <a href=\"https:\/\/gettr.com\/post\/pg6y60db1d\">in an interview<\/a> about HCoin with GTV, the anti-Chinese government media company he co-founded with Guo last year. This comes as the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ad19be3f-8f1a-494f-933b-2462e348c032\">bidding war<\/a> for its parent company Alex Medical begins to cool off, with TAT Medical Services pulling out soon after <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d9a165d3-7d1b-4ace-8b1f-2393f9e7d989\">Speed Medical<\/a> also pulled its offer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arabia Investments Holding (AIH) saw its net income fall 51.2% y-o-y to EGP 15.2 mn in <\/strong><strong>3Q2021.<\/strong> AIH\u2019s revenues also fell 34% y-o-y to EGP 420 mn during the quarter, according to their latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/Arabia-Investments-Holding.pdf\">financials (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arab Dairy\u2019s losses widened in 3Q2021 to EGP 15 mn<\/strong> from EGP 8.4 mn in losses during the same period last year, according to the Panda cheese manufacturer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/Arab-Dairy.pdf\">quarterly financials (pdf)<\/a>. Egypt was no exception to the rule, with the Red Sea governorate banning single-use plastic products <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/07\/21\/egypts-marsa-alam-to-soon-become-a-no-plastic-zone\/\">in 2019<\/a>, while the Environment Ministry announced last March a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/archive-wealth\/guide-living-sustainably-egypt\/\">USD 3 mn project<\/a> to expand that policy countrywide. As awareness about the environmental impact of single-use plastic has increased, the cotton tote became the poster child of a new age of eco-friendly personal habits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the cotton tote is a classic example of how the unintended drawbacks of climate-conscious choices may outweigh their benefits<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/24\/style\/cotton-totes-climate-crisis.html?mc=aud_dev&campaign_id=23849138953980063&ad-keywords=auddevgate&subid1=TAFI&adset_id=23849138963090063&ad_id=23849138963540063&fbclid=IwAR3-_QaUFVcYZrB6OomujYKYV5fAHV5kQKRhgzzpJxoJd7faoMi0823gi-c&ad_name=INTER_20_XXXX_XXX_1P_CD_XX_XX_SITEVISITXREM_X_XXXX_COALL_P_X_X_EN_FBIG_OA_XXXX_00_EN_JP_NFLINKS&adset_name=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2021%2F08%2F24%2Fstyle%2Fcotton-totes-climate-crisis.html\">New York Times<\/a> writes. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.mst.dk\/udgiv\/publications\/2018\/02\/978-87-93614-73-4.pdf\">2018 study<\/a> by the Danish Environment and Food Ministry found that, to <strong>offset the carbon footprint of its production, one cotton tote would need to be used daily for 54 years<\/strong>. The environmental cost of growing the crop is particularly relevant to Egypt, which is long-famed for its luxurious (but water-intensive) cotton and is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/hardhats\/counting-costs-govts-usd-50-bn-water-saving-plan\/\">working to combat water scarcity<\/a> with a USD 50 bn water-saving plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Totes are not the only culprit: <\/strong>The findings raise a flag concerning greenwashed products and services that have a hidden environmental consequence. We take a look at some others:<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1- Fast fashion \u2014 yes, even the green labels.<\/strong> In a classic case of greenwashing, most fast fashion brands now have a \u201cclimate conscious\u201d line made of recycled textiles or materials. But no matter how green those labels are, one-tenth of industrial water use goes towards fashion, with one cotton shirt taking approximately 3k liters of water to manufacture. Producing one pair of jeans is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20200310-sustainable-fashion-how-to-buy-clothes-good-for-the-climate\">estimated to take<\/a> about 7.5-10k liters of water \u2014 the equivalent of 10 years of drinking water for one person. Some 10% of global carbon emissions and almost 20% of wastewater can be attributed to the fashion industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fashion is \u201ccurrently responsible for more annual carbon emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined,\u201d<\/strong> portending a 50% increase in greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decade, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/psci.princeton.edu\/tips\/2020\/7\/20\/the-impact-of-fast-fashion-on-the-environment\">Princeton University<\/a> study. And with fast-changing trends (and low-quality products) resulting in higher turnover, people are discarding clothes faster. An estimated 57% of discarded clothes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonobjective.co\/article\/fashion-and-waste-an-uneasy-relationship#:~:text=Of%20that%20vast%20majority%20of,up%20in%20the%20waste%20stream.\">end up in landfills<\/a>, only to later be incinerated, exposing nearby communities to dangerous gases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local brands are adapting to cater to the conscious consumer:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcham.org.eg\/publications\/business-monthly\/issues\/286\/October-2019\/3899\/making-sustainability-stylish\">Home-grown labels<\/a> have sought to capture the attention of environmentally conscious consumers, with labels like local artisan-produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Zaategypt\/\">Thaat<\/a>, ethical streetwear brand <a href=\"https:\/\/scarabaeus-sacer.com\/\">Scarabaeus Sacer<\/a>, plastic upcycling brands <a href=\"https:\/\/up-fuse.com\/\">UpFuse<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/reformstudio.net\/\">Reform Studio<\/a> raising awareness about waste in fashion with their products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- Going paperless, which we\u2019ve been told time and again is better for the environment, also has a hidden price tag.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sustainable-business\/digital-really-greener-paper-marketing\">We are just starting to gauge<\/a> the true environmental impact of going digital, as we factor the carbon footprint of manufacturing electronic products and the energy needed to power them. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/enveco\/resource_efficiency\/pdf\/studies\/issue_paper_digital_transformation_20191220_final.pdf\">study by the Institute for Applied Ecology<\/a> puts it, \u201c<strong>a lack of data \u2026 does not imply a lack of impact<\/strong>.\u201d The study points to the direct impact of the digital transformation on biodiversity and land use, ranging from pollutants produced in resource extraction and hardware production, to power generation and the effect on underwater species due to data transmission, as well as e-waste. With global electronic waste growing by 38% from 53.6 mn metric tons (mt) in 2019 to a whopping 74.7 mn mt in 2030, e-waste is the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/global.techradar.com\/en-ae\/news\/e-waste-becomes-worlds-fastest-growing-domestic-waste-stream\">fastest growing domestic waste stream<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt was one of Africa\u2019s top e-waste producers in 2019<\/strong>, generating 585.8 kilotons (kt) of e-waste, according to a 2020 report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/myitu\/-\/media\/Publications\/2020-Publications\/EN---Global-E-waste-Monitor-2020.pdf\">Global E-Waste Monitor<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/introducing-e-tadweer-the-nationwide-electronic-waste-recycling-app\/\">Recent figures<\/a> provided by Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad put Egypt\u2019s e-waste production at a significantly lower 90 kt annually, with 58% produced by the private sector, 23% by households, and 19% by the public sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the upside, there have been government and citizen-based drives to help with e-waste recycling<\/strong>, which the CIT Ministry said in 2014, is an industry worth USD 2.2 bn in Egypt. That same year, the ministry adopted the <a href=\"https:\/\/mcit.gov.eg\/en\/Media_Center\/Latest_News\/News\/817\">Green ICT Strategy<\/a>, which \u201caims at reducing the adverse environmental impacts resulting from the expansion of using ICT devices.\u201d A host of e-waste management startups have also cropped up to dispose of unwanted electronics, including student-launched <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/archive-wealth\/guide-living-sustainably-egypt\/\">RecycloBekia<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/introducing-e-tadweer-the-nationwide-electronic-waste-recycling-app\/\">E-Tadweer<\/a>, which the CIT and environment ministries launched this year. In 2017, the Sustainable Recycling Industries (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainable-recycling.org\/\">SRI<\/a>) also <a href=\"https:\/\/egyptinnovate.com\/en\/news\/e-khorda-program-now-open\">launched E-khorda<\/a>, an e-waste recycling entrepreneurship support program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- \u201cDeadheading\u201d undermines ridesharing\u2019s green-ness:<\/strong> Ridesharing, once considered a climate-friendly alternative to owning or driving a car, has quickly proven to not be as efficient as initially thought. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/resources\/ride-hailing-problem-climate\">Data shows<\/a> that ride-hailing trips pollute about 69% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-02\/Ride-Hailing%27s-Climate-Risks.pdf\">more than<\/a> trips that they are replacing. One of the main reasons for this is deadheading (the miles driven between dropping off one passenger and picking up another), which produces up to 50% more carbon emissions than the same trip in a private vehicle. Ride hailing and ride sharing are also increasingly replacing low carbon modes of transport such as walking, biking and transit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do we need to tell you that Cairo has a big air pollution problem?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/arabvoices\/reducing-air-pollution-greater-cairo-involves-switching-private-vehicles-improved-public\">As many as two<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/arabvoices\/reducing-air-pollution-greater-cairo-involves-switching-private-vehicles-improved-public\">mn people<\/a> seek treatment for respiratory problems each year due to poor air quality. According to a 2021 report by the World Bank, switching from private vehicles to public transport is the single most effective way to reduce air pollution in the nation\u2019s capital. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/12\/05\/uber-pilots-bus-service-in-cairo\/\">Uber<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/12\/04\/careem-bus-launches-in-cairo\/\">Careem<\/a> launched bus services in 2018, placing them as competitors with ride-sharing bus app <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f63d3ff5-2693-4e97-94c7-b4638ef57a75\">Swvl<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The bottom line: Climate-consciousness isn\u2019t about a single product or way of life<\/strong>, but about understanding that how we use products and services is as important as the choice of products and services themselves.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content
