You don\u2019t want to miss this one.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>THE OTHER BIG STORIES TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>StartupLand is driving the conversation here at home this afternoon:<\/strong> Edtech platform OTO Courses <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/OTO-Edventures-PRL_EN_08-11-21-V.2-converted.pdf\">secured (pdf)<\/a> a USD 400k investment from EdVentures to develop the platform and expand its services to more segments; London-based fintech player Jumo is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/723a8863-3011-4f43-b414-355001ba9115\">eyeing Egypt<\/a> as a potential market for expansion after raising USD 120 mn in its latest funding round; and <a href=\"https:\/\/disrupt-africa.com\/2021\/11\/09\/egyptian-tech-startups-are-africas-most-accelerated-report-finds\/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=egyptian-tech-startups-are-africas-most-accelerated-report-finds\">Disrupt Africa<\/a> is out with a report indicating more Egyptian tech startups participate in accelerator or incubator programs than do in the rest of the continent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also guiding the conversation locally were the latest agreements signed at the TransMea 2021 conference. <\/strong>Abu Dhabi Ports (ADP) signed today an MoU to manage and operate a multi-use terminal at the Safaga Port, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/Trans-MEA-.pdf\">Transport Ministry statement (pdf)<\/a>. The agreement, which was signed on the penultimate day of the <a href=\"https:\/\/trans-mea.com\/\">TransMea 2021<\/a> transport conference, comes as ADP signaled it could invest as much as USD 500 mn in Egypt should it land contracts for two port development projects, including the Safaga Port. The agreement is among eight MoUs and cooperation protocols signed at the conference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ll have a deep dive into the details of the agreements signed at the transport conference in tomorrow\u2019s edition of Hardhat<\/strong>, our weekly publication on infrastructure in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over at the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cairoict.com\/\">Cairo ICT<\/a><\/strong><strong> exhibition<\/strong>, Benya Capital <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/Press-Release-Benya-Group-Openner-Sign-Memorandum-of-Understanding-to-Launch-50-million-Venture-Capital-Fund.docx.pdf\">signed an MoU (pdf)<\/a> with international VC firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openner.vc\/\">Openner<\/a> that will see Openner participate in launching Benya\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/49380cc1-6130-4023-bd5d-14ea65b41005\">USD 50 mn VC fund<\/a>, Benya Ventures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And we mustn\u2019t forget, Russian charter flights are back:<\/strong> Moscow resumed charter flights between Russia and Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh today, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3wtZqzq\">Russia Today<\/a> reports. But as with the first agreement, the WHO has yet to provide detail on how and when they would execute the plan. Some 12 countries have set a more specific target of going net-zero by as late as 2050, but have yet to provide specifics on how they aim to achieve that goal either. Healthcare related emissions account for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/11\/05\/climate\/climate-change-health.html\">a total 5%<\/a> of global CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Separately, an agreement to halt new car emissions by 2040 due to be unveiled <\/strong><strong>tomorrow is struggling to pick up steam <\/strong>as the US, China and Germany are holding out on committing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8c4a1809-902f-4582-a29e-1c83a97b9dff\">the Financial Times<\/a> reports. Global automakers like Volkswagen and BMW have yet to sign on to any commitments due to the absence of key governments in the agreement. \u201cThere remains considerable uncertainty about the development of global infrastructure to support a complete shift to zero emission vehicles,\u201d said BMW, who remained skeptical about the pace of shifting away from combustion engines, particularly in lower income countries. Ford, General Motors, Daimler and Volvo have said they are on board, and have pledged to phase out emissions at various points in the coming two decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New pledges by Japan could help developed countries make good on their <\/strong><strong>climate finance commitments: <\/strong>Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Spotlight\/Environment\/Climate-Change\/COP26\/Japan-pledges-extra-10bn-of-overseas-climate-financing\">pledge last week<\/a> of an additional USD 2 bn a year for the next five years towards helping lower-income countries mitigate the impacts of climate change could help developed countries reach their target by 2022, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2fc0398d-c982-4214-b534-1ee3205cde97\">Financial Times<\/a> estimates. Rich countries had made a 2009 pledge to commit an annual USD 100 bn in climate finance by 2020 to help lower-income countries through their green transitions, but were not expected to reach that goal till 2023, with <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bd63426e-a914-4a11-80c6-a82849046ea2\">estimates putting<\/a> the total funds currently at around USD 88-90 bn annually. Additional funding from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/italy-hikes-climate-finance-contribution-14-bln-per-year-next-five-yea-2021-10-31\/\">Italy<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-calls-for-world-to-be-climate-resilient-by-2030-as-cop26-delivers-billions-for-most-vulnerable\">UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/um.dk\/en\/news\/newsdisplaypage\/?newsid=19ff00c8-06c5-4994-9087-ed03e2d27331\">Denmark<\/a> is expected to help plug the gap, though not all of it will begin flowing next year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day two of the \u201c<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eg.usembassy.gov\/u-s-egypt-strategic-dialogue-november-8-9\/\">strategic dialogue<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u201d between Egypt and the United States is now<\/strong><strong> getting underway.<\/strong> Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a4b1d0dc-6b9d-4d59-8469-5bd34bc62a7d\">addressed reporters<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a4b1d0dc-6b9d-4d59-8469-5bd34bc62a7d\">yesterday<\/a> at the end of the first day of talks, which saw the two sides cover everything from Egypt\u2019s role as a key diplomacy anchor for the US in the region, concerns over human rights, and plans for climate-related and economic cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FOR TOMORROW-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>Inflation figures for October will be released tomorrow: <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s headline inflation rate has been ticking up in recent months, hitting a 20-month high of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9734c255-82fb-4ede-9084-de53f4dbb70d\">6.6% in September<\/a> on the back of rising food and energy prices. The government had decided to raise the cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0a41ad6b-9141-4ceb-9c19-9cdb81e423f3\">natural gas for manufacturers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/390900ee-1b5c-47ff-89a3-2a7cc122897e\">gasoline prices for motorists<\/a> last month, and fertilizer and chemicals producers have signaled they could raise their prices <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f95278a5-2fa0-49f9-970b-e0249de43b6d\">by up to 20%<\/a> to protect their operating margins. Then there\u2019s the rising international wheat prices, partially due to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01393c38-caed-41c5-a0dd-1d4724b14015\">rising demand from Egypt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carry trade still trumps inflation for now:<\/strong> Although the headline rate remains within the Central Bank of Egypt\u2019s target range of 7% (+\/-2%) \u2014 and analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9960784b-94f2-435a-af19-a204ecac1df4\">we\u2019ve spoken with<\/a> predict a stabilization of prices next year \u2014 rising commodity prices will likely factor into inflation figures over the next few months. We have <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9960784b-94f2-435a-af19-a204ecac1df4\">one of the highest real interest rates<\/a> in the world, making our bonds attractive to foreign portfolio investors. <strong>The central bank\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee will meet one more time this year to review interest rates on 16 December. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But we need to watch out as developed countries are in a negative real interest rate climate in developed economies <\/strong><strong>despite <\/strong><strong>spiraling <\/strong><strong>i<\/strong><strong>nflation. <\/strong>Countries including the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01ff5ec8-6224-4431-8796-fcb03e034f26\">US<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/17f4feb1-0f1a-483e-8515-a4aea2f91682\">UK<\/a> and Germany are seeing persistent negative real interest rates after their central banks declined to hike rates anytime soon despite rising inflation, analysts tell the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c99e31e5-cb71-4fb7-9759-8bec058ed2c6\">Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s gotten analysts so worried? <\/strong>Rates below the neutral mark of 0 are highly stimulative, supporting debt financing and credit growth. But with developed markets already so highly valued, that could trigger financial instability down the line, some analysts warn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But low interest rates are unlikely to last<\/strong>, with the Bank of England <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/monetary-policy-report\/2021\/november-2021#percent\">saying last week<\/a> that interest rates will need to \u201crise moderately\u201d to return inflation to its 2% target. The Fed meanwhile began unwinding its huge stimulus program this month amid concerns that inflation will remain elevated for longer than previously thought, with its asset purchase program expected to be completely phased out by June 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>? CIRCLE YOUR CALENDAR-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The two-day <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/africafintechsummit.com\">Africa Fintech summit<\/a><\/strong><strong> kicks off next Tuesday, 16 November.<\/strong> The summit looks at innovation in the fintech ecosystem, venture capital and other forms of investing, and will also discuss the rise of healthtech.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calling all Egyptian entrepreneurs aged 23-35:<\/strong> You have exactly two weeks to apply for the acceleration exchange program <a href=\"https:\/\/msv.untapcompete.com\/\">Meet Silicon Valley<\/a> for a chance to travel to California for a 10-day program to meet with tech executives and investors. The program is being implemented by Injaz Egypt and TechWadi with the support of the US Embassy in Egypt, and the deadline for applications is 23 November.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG STORIES ABRO<\/strong><strong>AD-<\/strong><strong> GE splitting up for good: <\/strong>Massive US conglomerate General Electric will break up into three separate entities by early 2024, the company announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ge.com\/news\/press-releases\/ge-plans-to-form-three-public-companies-focused-on-growth-sectors-of-aviation\">press release<\/a> today. The move will see the company spin off its healthcare division in early 2023, before merging its renewables, power equipment and digital businesses into one entity to be spun off in early 2024. The remaining company, GE Aviation, will run the company\u2019s engine-manufacturing arm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The bulb tha<\/strong><strong>t burnt out:<\/strong> Once a giant of industry, the company founded by Thomas Edison embarked on a sell-off and restructuring in 2018, as it grappled with a growing debt pile and reputational damage dating back to the 2008 financial crisis. The split is a chance to turn a fresh leaf (or three), as each segment moves forward independent of the weighty conglomerate structure, <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/09\/investing\/ge-split\/index.html\">CNN Business<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>Saudi Arabia\u2019s economy expanded at its fastest pace in nearly 10 years in 3Q2021<\/strong><strong> thanks to higher oil prices<\/strong>, with GDP growth coming in at 6.8% during the quarter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stats.gov.sa\/sites\/default\/files\/press_release_GDP%20nowcasting%20report%20EN%20Q3_2021.pdf\">according to data<\/a> from the kingdom\u2019s General Authority for Statistics. The oil sector alone grew 9% and the non-oil economy expanded 6.2%. I covered the food and beverages sector for two years and also completed the first two levels of the CFA while I was there. I was interested in equities and financial markets, so I moved to sell-side research, first at Beltone and then at CI Capital. I started by covering the FMCG sector but then shifted to financial institutions. During that time I finished my CFA and also got an MBA from Edinburgh Business School.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My next move was to <\/strong><strong>development<\/strong><strong> finance<\/strong> and I began at Germany\u2019s Finance in Motion before moving to my current position at the International Finance Corporation (IFC).<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m part of the investment team at IFC that covers financial institutions across MEA. <\/strong>We focus on private sector development and offer a wide range of investment products across the debt and equity stream to financial institutions. We also supplement our investments with advisory services. We identify gaps or room for development in the different markets we cover and then filter down the market to select the most suitable potential partners that align best with our development mandate. It also works the other way around, where banks approach us for financing for a certain purpose such as climate finance, MSME or gender finance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A recent transaction we worked on was CIB\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0bcb1c70-719f-4566-870f-0b4f3bcc140a\">USD 100 mn green bond issuance<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> We felt that the Egyptian bond market was stagnant and there was a gap we felt we could fill given our expertise in this area. We worked with the regulator to establish guidelines for the market and then replicated our experience with other countries in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The best part of my job is that I feel like I\u2019m making an impact. <\/strong>It\u2019s definitely nice to be part of the development side. I like that it\u2019s a constant learning experience. We get a lot of experience working in different countries and as part of a diversified and global team. Since our work is project based, we work with a new team or person on every transaction. We try to work with locals in every new country to manage culture barriers and make communication easier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most challenging part is that there is always a lot going on in the region [laughs]. <\/strong>You have to focus on so many markets and be hands on when keeping up with all the developments. However, working with countries that vary in development makes it easier to pinpoint the gaps in financial markets and what they need to improve, as you have several similar references.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When looking at a potential investment in Egypt, the factor I find most interesting is the firm\u2019s management. <\/strong>You really get a feel for how they run their business and how they assess their clients. I determine that a management team is a good one by comparing what they do to best practices, but there\u2019s also a personal judgement angle that comes with experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other than management, we look at their business model in general<\/strong>, carry out an appraisal, and look at specific aspects such as credit lending. If you\u2019re initially discussing one kind of facility, as the conversation flows you can later decide that another one makes more sense<\/p>\n<p><strong>The macro picture in Egypt has been positive this year, and I think it will continue that way these remaining months.<\/strong> There has been a lot of development and reform over the past few years, which helped us to go into covid on a strong footing. Going forward, we really need to build on what has been achieved so far, and I think the direction is generally positive going into 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the Egyptian finance sector, this particularly holds true.<\/strong> There\u2019s a lot of talk about fintech, green finance, and SME finance. There\u2019s a lot of movement in those areas, but access to finance is still a big issue despite all the improvement we\u2019ve seen. As covid-19 becomes more manageable and we slowly move away from the peak, I think many financial institutions have adapted well and have found ways to stimulate a pick-up in business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The biggest trend I see in the local sector is the transition to digital. <\/strong>This includes an interest in fintech and mobile banking. We do get approached to help banks on that end and it\u2019s definitely something we do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I think we\u2019ve all adapted well to work from home and less travel on the job. <\/strong>Of course we prefer face to face meetings, but going virtual has been more efficient. In my case, I don\u2019t miss the two-hour commute every day, and I like that there\u2019s time to switch off during a shift. We\u2019ll probably go back to travel soon, but it\u2019s definitely going to be less frequent than before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The last thing I watched was the new season of <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt7335184\/\">You<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> I found it quite interesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A book I go back to a lot is <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wherever-You-There-Are-Mindfulness\/dp\/1401307787\">Wherever You Go, There You Are<\/a><\/strong><strong> by Jon Kabat-Zinn. <\/strong>It\u2019s about how to be mindful about the basic things you do on a daily basis. Whenever I pick it up, I feel like I learn something new.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In my downtime I do a lot of yoga.<\/strong> I got a certification for teaching yoga when I spent a month in Bali. Which also shows my love for traveling, although that was mostly pre-covid [laughs].<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>MARKET ROUNDUP-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The EGX30 rose 0.8% at today\u2019s close<\/strong> on turnover of EGP 810.5 mn (45.9% below the 90-day average). Regional investors were net buyers.
