The rest of the week is also looking eventful (at least on the politics \/ diplomacy side), as Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry heads to Washington tomorrow as Egypt appears to have been snubbed from a \u201cdemocracy summit\u201d next month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>#1- EGX-listed Ibnsina Pharma\u2019s investment arm is investing EGP 440 mn in establishing<\/strong><strong> a logistics service provider.<\/strong> The third-party logistics business, Ramp Logistics, will focus on warehousing, transportation and outsourcing other 3PL services, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/Ibnsina-Ramp-Logistics-investment.pdf\">an EGX disclosure (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>#2- <\/strong><strong>Benya Capital is launching a USD 50 mn VC fund<\/strong> as the IT infrastructure contractor eyes a larger expansion strategy, Chairman Ahmed Mekky said ahead of the Cairo ICT Expo, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2021\/11\/07\/1478934\">Al Borsa<\/a>. The VC fund will focus primarily on tech, IoT and AI startups in Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- Saudi investment company <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rajhi-invest.com\/index-en.html\">Rajhi-Invest<\/a><\/strong><strong> has joined education investment fund<\/strong><strong> Lighthouse Education platform, investing EGP 75 mn<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/11\/PRL-Rajhi-Invest-Lighthouse-AR-V1-copy-copy.pdf\">press release (pdf)<\/a>. Total investment has now exceeded the EGP 500 mn <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/blackboards\/lighthouse-education-takes-off-big-plans-sector\/\">targeted for its first close<\/a>, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We\u2019ll dive into these stories and more in tomorrow morning\u2019s edition of EnterpriseAM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Two conferences open their doors at the Egypt International Exhibition Center today: <\/strong>The four-day transport conference <a href=\"https:\/\/trans-mea.com\/\">TransMea 2021<\/a>, and the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/cairoict.com\/\">Cairo ICT<\/a> exhibition, which also wraps on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> on the top stories from today\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>EBRD is more optimistic about Egypt\u2019s growth outlook:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s economy is on track to grow 4.9% in FY2021-2022, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6e5f83be-4912-4f77-aa51-2f7c8d9e4267\">said in its latest Regional Economic Prospects report<\/a> on Thursday.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Suez Canal transit fees <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/36bf88d1-efc3-4194-aa9a-23a4defc0035\">are set to increase<\/a><\/strong><strong> by 6% for most ships starting February 2022<\/strong>, as the Suez Canal Authority looks to capitalize on rising traffic, which it expects to increase by almost 7% next year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Sisi administration wants to grow renewable energy capacity to cover 42% of the country\u2019s electricity needs by 2030<\/strong>, Oil Minister Tarek El Molla <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/46eb0c0b-2e62-47e0-8423-05c5359f3275\">announced<\/a> at the UN\u2019s COP26 climate summit in Glasgow on Thursday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s no one story dominating the front pages of the global press this afternoon. That<\/strong><strong> said, China is getting a lot of play:<\/strong> A stronger than expected boost in the country\u2019s exports in October suggests the country\u2019s economic slowdown could be easing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-oct-exports-beat-forecasts-offer-buffer-slowing-domestic-economy-2021-11-07\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, while coal imports to China doubled as the government seeks to bring down prices amid nationwide fuel shortages, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-07\/china-s-coal-imports-double-after-power-shortage-boosted-demand?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. The coal tidbit is particularly interesting considering tens of countries and organizations <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/17f4feb1-0f1a-483e-8515-a4aea2f91682\">signed an agreement<\/a> at COP26 last week to phase out the use of coal power. China did not sign onto the pact, despite being one of the world\u2019s major emitters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, plenty are keeping their gaze firmly fixed on Washington politics: <\/strong>US President Joe Biden has managed to pass a controversial USD 1 tn infrastructure bill \u2014 but he still has to contend with an electoral backlash and deep divides among Democrats. The summit is seen as a key test of Biden\u2019s pledge to return the US to global leadership following Donald Trump\u2019s more isolationist (and embarrassing) tenure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some invitees\u2019 policies are less than democratic:<\/strong> Rights campaigners have branded the tentative invite list \u201cproblematic,\u201d questioning the inclusion of countries like the Philippines and Poland, where civil rights have long been shrinking. Iraq and Israel are the only countries in the Middle East to have made the cut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The snub comes as Shoukry heads to the US for high-level talks tomorrow:<\/strong> Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will hold talks with US Secretary of State <strong>Antony Blinken<\/strong> during the two-day US-Egypt Strategic Dialogue, which kicks off tomorrow, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MFAEgypt\/posts\/193276639648857\">Egyptian Foreign Ministry<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/u-s-egypt-strategic-dialogue-november-8-9\/\">US State Department<\/a> said in separate statements over the weekend. What starts off as a story of petty locker-room pranks gradually takes a darker turn, touching on bullying, mental health, harassment, patriarchy, and the violence against women enacted by society, and the women themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our honest opinion?<\/strong> Though the show isn\u2019t without its plot holes, the cast of relative newcomers give strong performances and portray relatable characters. The show is miles better than Netflix\u2019s first attempt at an Arab high school drama, 2018\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80220816\">Jinn<\/a>, which was pretty much unwatchable. Water contamination and a scarcity of water for irrigation are leading to increased migration from water-scarce regions and creating friction between neighboring nations. In addition to better resource management, diversification of water sources, and water rationing, new research has shown that community cohesion and AI tools can help us avert future water crises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How bad have things gotten worldwide?<\/strong> According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/wash\/water-scarcity\">UNICEF<\/a>, an estimated four bn people \u2014 almost two-thirds of the world\u2019s population \u2014 live in water-stressed conditions for at least one month each year, and more than two bn live in countries with inadequate water supply. The UN agency estimates that half of the world\u2019s population could be living in areas threatened by water scarcity by 2025 and up to 700 mn people could be displaced by water scarcity by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can AI help? <\/strong>Believe it or not, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20190219-how-artificial-intelligence-could-unlock-world-peace\">it might<\/a>. Organizations like the World Bank, the UN and the Red Cross are looking to AI to predict and preempt humanitarian disasters, using the technology to send early warning signs that a mass migration or a famine are on the horizon. One project, a <a href=\"https:\/\/waterpeacesecurity.org\/map\">Global Early Warning Tool<\/a> by the Water, Peace and Security Partnership (<a href=\"https:\/\/waterpeacesecurity.org\/info\/about-wps\">WPS<\/a>), collates data about factors like rainfall, drought, flooding, agricultural production, crop failures, population density, wealth and corruption to produce a map of conflict warnings, and claims to have an accuracy rate of 86%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The tool\u2019s most interesting find: <\/strong>Factors like efficient resource management, improved awareness, socially responsible behavior, rationing and transparency help governments and communities are a better predictor of water-related conflict than pure access to resources. According to the tool, Egypt has areas of low (<10%), with pockets of high (40-80%) baseline water stress, and continues to be rated a peaceful zone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has for years made water security a top priority<\/strong>, working to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/719598fd-7d43-4ae7-90f0-2879fcd55ebf\">limit the impact<\/a> of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on our water supply. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/africa-in-focus\/2020\/08\/05\/the-controversy-over-the-grand-ethiopian-renaissance-dam\/\">85% of the water<\/a> that flows into the Blue Nile originates in Ethiopia\u2019s highlands, and the threat that Ethiopia will fail to release water from the hydroelectric GERD in the event of a drought downstream remains imminent. In efforts to diversify its water resources, Cairo has announced plans to invest a potential EGP 45 bn before the middle of the decade in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9ccc68e5-b9b6-4bd4-9715-194bb33bb099\">desalination plants<\/a> and is also working on implementing an ambitious water-saving plan that <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/hardhats\/counting-costs-govts-usd-50-bn-water-saving-plan\/\">could cost nearly USD 50 bn<\/a> through 2037. <sup><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethiopia is hardly exceptional in looking to advance its own interests at the expense of downstream neighbors. <\/strong>Globally, more countries are damming rivers and building power plants to secure water supply and electricity as water scarcity pushes them to seek out secure water sources. The effect of Turkey\u2019s Ilisu Dam on the Tigris, which it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20210816-how-water-shortages-are-brewing-wars\">began filling<\/a> in 2019, for example, has been acutely felt on the opposite side of the border in Syria, Iraq and Iran, and resulted in the outbreak of a health crisis in Iraq in summer of 2019. In West Africa, some experts have <a href=\"https:\/\/watersource.awa.asn.au\/environment\/natural-environment\/how-poor-water-management-contributes-to-the-rise-of-terrorism\/\">drawn connections<\/a> between the rise of terrorist group Boko Haram with the humanitarian crisis that has resulted from the drying up of Lake Chad, as lost agricultural livelihoods and rising poverty give rise to an environment in which extremist thought found receptive minds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The geopolitical ramifications of rising sea levels and drought will be massive<\/strong>, with migration flows shifting as people migrate away from areas that are no longer habitable due to a shortage of freshwater or flooding. India, which relies heavily on rivers that originate in China, is increasingly feeling the pinch of water scarcity as China develops megaprojects such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/india-china-hydropower-idUSKBN28B4RB\">Medog Dam<\/a> being planned in Tibet, which China claims will produce triple the amount of electricity by the world\u2019s largest power station \u2014 its own Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. India is rushing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/india-china-hydropower-idUSKBN28B4RB\">build its own hydropower project<\/a> to mitigate the impact that the Chinese dam could have on its side of the border. These projects are creating a domino effect in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b29578f1-c05f-4374-bbb4-68485ef6dbf7\">further-downstream Bangladesh<\/a>, which is doubly threatened by rising sea levels and water shortages. Jakarta, Indonesia, is similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b29578f1-c05f-4374-bbb4-68485ef6dbf7\">threatened<\/a> by both flooding and drought, as groundwater depletion causes it to sink and rising sea levels threaten to flood it, making it potentially uninhabitable within 30 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But effective resource management and strong governance remain key: <\/strong>How communities respond to crises is key to the future of their water security.
