On the M&A front, Egyptian Steel founder Ahmed Abou Hashima could be about to bow out of the company\u2019s ownership structure, after Ezz Steel announced its bid to buy his remaining 18% stake, while Cleopatra shareholders can subscribe to CI Capital\u2019s tender offer for 26.2% of the healthcare provider from tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elsewhere, a software bug has set the internet aflame<\/strong>, and the EU wants to make sure green financiers aren\u2019t secretly burning fossil fuels. Not lighting up anytime soon: New Zealand\u2019s pre-teens, who are likely getting a lifetime smoking ban come 2027.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a><strong> #1 Ahmed Abou Hashima might soon become an ex-steel magnate:<\/strong> Ezz Steel is bidding to acquire 18% of Egyptian Steel for EGP 2.5 bn, according to a bourse <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2021\/12\/Ezz-Steel-disclosure-12.21.pdf\">disclosure (pdf)<\/a>, in a move that would see Ahmed Abou Hashima sell down his shares in the company he founded in 2010. Ezz Steel subsidiary Al Ezz Dekheila confirmed its plans to buy Abou Hashima\u2019s entire stake in an all-cash transaction that would put the value of Egyptian Steel at around EGP 13.9 bn.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>#2 Tick, tock:<\/strong> Starting tomorrow, Cleopatra Hospital Group shareholders will have until Sunday, 26 December to subscribe to CI Capital\u2019s voluntary tender offer (VTO), which it launched last week to acquire 26.2% of the company, according to the timeline set by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egx.com.eg\/ar\/BulletinNews.aspx?BCODE=48063&All=\">EGX<\/a> today. CI Capital subsidiary MCI Capital Healthcare Partners last week got the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/06eb6fae-9d93-486a-9376-9d1093c7acd1\">greenlight from the FRA<\/a> on its offer to purchase the shares at EGP 5 apiece, with Cleopatra\u2019s biggest shareholder, Care Healthcare, agreeing to sell an 8-12% stake in the company from its holdings at the proposed price. Cleopatra\u2019s share price rose 1% on the news, closing at EGP 4.7 per share.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We\u2019ll have more details on these stories and others in tomorrow\u2019s EnterpriseAM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>PSA #1- We\u2019ll have to wait a while longer to start signing up for booster <\/strong><strong>shots:<\/strong> Today was supposed to be the first day that senior citizens, people with chronic medical conditions, and frontline workers such as medical staff could start registering with the Health Ministry to receive booster covid shots. It seems that we\u2019ll have to wait for a while longer: a couple of us tried to sign up this morning, but neither the website nor the ministry hotline are currently allowing people to register for third shots. <strong>The ministry aims to start inviting people to register in the coming days<\/strong>, ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar told us this afternoon, without providing specifics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA #2-<\/strong> <strong>Attention joint stock and investment companies in Cairo:<\/strong> You have four days left to register for the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bd3ab8f6-e6bc-4562-9904-eb485b5cb217\">government\u2019s e-invoicing platform<\/a>. As of this Wednesday, 15 December, more than 3.7k companies in the capital will be required to be on the system and start issuing electronic invoices for B2B transactions. Some 2.8k large taxpayers have signed up to the Finance Ministry\u2019s new digital platform over several phases going back to November 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong> <strong>Shoukry is heading to KSA:<\/strong> Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is heading to Riyadh to launch what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MFAEgypt\/posts\/216955987280922\">the ministry is calling<\/a> a \u201cpolitical consultation mechanism.\u201d We\u2019re not 100% sure what this means but it\u2019s supposed to enhance ties between Egypt and the Gulf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodafrica-expo.com\/\">Food Africa expo<\/a><\/strong><strong> opened this morning<\/strong> at the Egypt International Exhibition Center and runs through Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Arab Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy kicked off today <\/strong>in Aswan. But the phenomenon isn\u2019t particular to the American labor market: companies in countries around the world are starting to struggle finding and retaining talent for skilled and unskilled positions alike, a trend that could undermine the global economy\u2019s recovery from the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>The great resignation is coming\u201d:<\/strong> So said organizational psychologist Anthony Klotz in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-10\/quit-your-job-how-to-resign-after-covid-pandemic?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> in May, who coined the term in anticipation that a flood of people in the US would soon quit their jobs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>His <\/strong><strong>prediction seems to have stacked<\/strong><strong> up:<\/strong> US labor market data published a few months following the interview showed that a record 4 mn people resigned from their jobs in April. Subsequent months provided corroborating evidence, with resignation rates setting new record highs in July, August, and September, which saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/jolts.t04.htm\">4.4 mn people<\/a> hand in their notices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>His reasoning: <\/strong>Klotz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-everyone-is-quitting-great-resignation-psychologist-pandemic-rethink-life-2021-10\">claims that<\/a> the covid pandemic is driving a fundamental realignment of values among many workers in the US. Because who we are as employees is so central to our identities, the disruption faced during the pandemic, whether triggered by layoffs, WFH, burnout, or contact with illness and death, gave people reason to stop and think, and in some cases reconsider their priorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic fundamentals seem to underpin<\/strong><strong> the existential motivations:<\/strong> Conditions for workplace discontent in the US existed years before covid came and forced the cognitive shift theorized by Klotz. Compared to other developed countries, working conditions in the US aren't great, with laxer regulations giving workers fewer employment rights, declining wages, and weakened unions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not just an American phenomenon:<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/09\/who-is-driving-the-great-resignation\">Harvard study<\/a> of 9 mn employees at 4k companies around the world found resignation rates to be highest among 30-45 year-old mid-career employees, with an average increase of more than 20% in 2021 from a year earlier. The tech and healthcare sectors saw unusually high resignation rates, which the study attributed to increased workloads brought about by the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chinese youth are laying flat:<\/strong> There are signs in China that younger generations of workers are beginning to reject the country\u2019s tough working culture and seek out alternatives. \u2018Involution\u2019 \u2014 a social scientific term originally coined to describe the point where population growth fails to produce greater output \u2014 has recently gained currency among the youth, who use it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/cultural-comment\/chinas-involuted-generation\">express a feeling of being burned out<\/a> by the system. In response, a growing movement is calling on people to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/techstream\/the-lying-flat-movement-standing-in-the-way-of-chinas-innovation-drive\/\">\u2018lay flat<\/a>\u2019 i.e. abstain from career-chasing, exit the workplace and reject consumerism. Now, the country is beginning to suffer from labor shortages in both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-30\/china-targets-55-million-jobs-better-worker-rights-in-new-plan?sref=mmeFTDW1\">high-tech industries<\/a> and lower-skilled factories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A similar trend is being seen in other Asian countries:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com.sg\/our-thinking\/dear-mercer\/dealing-with-the-great-resignation-in-asia.html\">Recent research<\/a> has found that companies in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines are all finding it harder to find and keep talent. Discontent with workplace conditions is leaving companies struggling particularly to retain and replace mid-career skilled professionals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This isn\u2019t quite a workers of the world<\/strong><strong> unite moment. <\/strong>On the other side of the Atlantic, there are no mass resignations and unemployment rates are slowly but surely returning to pre-pandemic levels. While that hasn\u2019t stopped people from rethinking their relationship to work on the continent, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2021\/12\/01\/the-great-resignation-is-it-an-american-revolution-or-is-the-trend-coming-to-europe\">Euronews<\/a>, it hasn\u2019t created the mass disruptions being seen in the US either. On the whole, European recovery plans, which kept employees on payrolls rather than providing unemployment support, have helped workers maintain their relationships with their employers, providing a valuable lesson about how to manage labor during a crisis. Europe\u2019s traditionally strong labor market institutions have given workers more outlets to express grievances, making it less likely that people would quit en masse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the US, there might be more than meets the eye:<\/strong> The record figures seen this year doesn\u2019t necessarily indicate a sudden swell in the number of people wanting to quit their jobs. The disruption caused by covid likely resulted in more people hanging on to jobs that they were ready to leave, creating an estimated 3.7 mn \u201cmissing quits\u201d that clocked in this year, Daniel Zhao, senior economist at Glassdoor, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/37-million-more-people-would-quit-jobs-if-no-pandemic-2021-8?r=US&IR=T\">Business Insider<\/a>. Others have argued<sup><\/sup> that the US labor market was tight before the pandemic and point to population growth halting for the first time in US history last year as a key factor making it tighter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But there does seem to be a shift, with employees gaining leverage and employers <\/strong><strong>rethinking priorities. <\/strong>As workers gain the upper hand in their relationships with employers for the first time in a generation in the US, employers are raising wages, training more people and taking chances on those that don\u2019t have qualifications \u2014 not to mention being more flexible about how and where people work. Additionally, many low-wage laborers that lost their jobs during the pandemic are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2021\/10\/12\/jolts-workers-quitting-august-pandemic\/\">reconsidering their options<\/a>, seeking to bolster their qualifications and add skills as they look to shift careers or find jobs closer to home, while others are looking for jobs that help them achieve better work-life balance or more flexible work conditions. A <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/08\/research-knowledge-workers-are-more-productive-from-home\">comparison<\/a> of a 2013 and 2020 survey of knowledge workers revealed that they were more productive, wasted less time, took more responsibility for their own schedules and viewed their work as more worthwhile when working from home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is this the beginning of the future of<\/strong><strong> work? <\/strong>The pandemic, which in many ways acted as a catalyst for the future of work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.project-syndicate.org\/commentary\/great-resignation-us-lack-of-support-for-workers-by-j-bradford-delong-2021-12?a_la=english&a_d=61ae2862ca0cf3d23c430c09&a_m=&a_a=click&a_s=&a_p=homepage&a_li=great-resignation-us-lack-of-support-for-workers-by-j-bradford-delong-2021-12&a_pa=curated&a_ps=&a_ms=&a_r=\">normalized<\/a> remote white-collar work, resulted in the more rapid automation of service work and altered retail workflows so that fewer employees could fulfill the same workloads. Leadership, innovation and organizational researcher at the Technical University of Munich Dr. Isabell Welpe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/11\/what-is-the-great-resignation-and-what-can-we-learn-from-it\/\">argues<\/a> that Decentralized autonomous organizations (<a href=\"https:\/\/policyreview.info\/glossary\/DAO\">DAOs<\/a>) are the next stage of organizations. In plain English, as individual and asynchronous work become more common, the one-size-fits-all approach that once defined workplaces is just not sustainable. And as the nature of work changes, employers will have to adopt new leadership styles that privilege self-leadership through greater responsibility and accountability over
