It\u2019s one of those days that can\u2019t quite be called \u201cquiet\u201d but also isn\u2019t entirely remarkable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>Auto manufacturing incentives could be ready this month: <\/strong>After years of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/11\/is-egypts-auto-manufacturing-incentives-package-coming-out-of-hibernation-soon-8271\/\">delays<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/08\/13\/govt-to-have-automotive-directive-ready-by-the-fall\/\">revisions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/07\/30\/govt-plans-to-scrap-automotive-directive-and-will-replace-it-with-special-zones\/\">overhauls<\/a>, the long-awaited automotive strategy could finally see the light this month, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly announced during a sitdown with representatives from General Motors International and Al Mansour Automotive, according to a cabinet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/284747960362298\">statement<\/a>. The strategy, which aims to grow the domestic auto industry and its feeder industries, would grant local assemblers incentives that enable them to manufacture vehicles using local components, as well as work on providing the technology infrastructure needed for manufacturing components to local industry players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPE<\/strong><strong>NING NOW- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unvaccinated citizens were barred from entering government facilities, notary offices,<\/strong><strong> and Egypt Post branches as of this morning<\/strong>, as per directives from the Madbouly government. Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Norway are among those reporting their first cases of Omicron. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-30\/omicron-reaches-latin-america-merck-pill-backed-virus-update?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/uk-59487399\">BBC<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/12\/01\/world\/omicron-variant-covid\">New York Times<\/a> have more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MARKET WATCH- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>Turkey\u2019s central bank steps in to stymie TRY collapse:<\/strong> The currency soared 8.5% against the greenback earlier today before cooling down to clock a 3.3% rise on the back of the central bank\u2019s announcement that it is intervening in the FX market for the first time in seven years. The move, which came after the TRY fell to record lows <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/edition\/am\/a0f4fbc6-5ec2-4b24-b18e-ce82eec50354\">yesterday<\/a>, could temporarily temper the currency\u2019s volatility but is unlikely to have a long-term stabilizing effect, as Turkey\u2019s dwindling FX reserves mean the central bank is unlikely to be able to sell \u201csubstantial amounts of USD on a regular basis,\u201d one analyst says. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s unorthodox economic policy of lowering interest rates to power economic growth and create jobs has wiped out a third of the currency\u2019s value in the past month. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-01\/turkey-central-bank-intervenes-in-fx-markets-to-stabilize-lira-kwnbq7gs?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/turkish-lira-plumbs-record-low-on-erdogans-continued-calls-for-rate-cuts-11638347691\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> have the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Volatility is also the name of the game in oil markets ahead of tomorrow\u2019s OPEC+<\/strong><strong> meeting<\/strong>, with prices rebounding today from an Omicron-fueled selloff yesterday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-30\/oil-rises-after-slump-as-investor-focus-swings-to-opec-meeting?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Market watchers expect the oil cartel to postpone ramping up supplies after US President Joe Biden decided last month to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c881293b-debd-49bd-8243-00c63ef98242\">tap into reserves<\/a> and release 50 mn bbl of crude. OPEC+ was expected to increase production by 400k bbl\/d as of January, but could decide to step back and take stock of the effect of Biden\u2019s oil dump and the Omicron variant on markets. Critics of South Korea\u2019s hydrogen goals note the government\u2019s focus on gray hydrogen, which is a non-renewable source, versus <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/enterprise-explains-green-hydrogen\/\">green hydrogen<\/a>, a promising renewable energy source.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The world\u2019s steel industry could be able to entirely eliminate its greenhouse gas<\/strong><strong> emissions by 2050, but it\u2019s not going to be cheap<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-01\/steel-s-path-to-go-green-will-cost-industry-up-to-278-billion?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a>. If we\u2019re able to do that, we can create machines that take on the benefits of the logical, rational neocortex without being wired for fear, greed, or jealousy, he says. Through theories like this, his book also argues against the common depiction that future robots will take over the human race. Here\u2019s why:<\/strong> Over the course of less than two weeks in November, General Electric (GE), Johnson & Johnson, and Toshiba each announced that they were splitting up into smaller, more focused firms that would allow them to streamline their operations. In early November, GE announced that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4681e285-769b-4fef-b477-0fb6f13c6442\">breaking up<\/a> into three separate businesses by 2024, covering healthcare, power and aviation. A week later, the world's largest health care company, Johnson & Johnson, announced that it would <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2a5b8cea-93e5-4bd6-b793-dfe43b5790ed\">split<\/a> into two companies, with one focusing on consumer health producing over-the-counter products like Tylenol, Listerine and Band-Aid, and the other on pharma (medical products, including the highly lucrative vaccine manufacturing). That same week, Toshiba announced plans to split into three companies, one focused on energy and infrastructure, one focused on hard disk drives and semiconductors, and the third focused on flash memory chips.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breaking up conglomerates is hardly new. <\/strong>The breakup of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/01\/01\/us\/bell-system-breakup-opens-era-of-great-expectations-and-great-concern.html\">Bell System<\/a> into eight separate companies (one of which became AT&T) in 1984 in response to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/1982\/01\/09\/us-ends-antitrust-suits-against-at38\/6545a672-b488-4915-9064-8baf4da21590\/\">antitrust lawsuit<\/a> was the first in a wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b570148b-15b4-4789-994e-b46810a205e4\">conglomerate breakups<\/a> during that decade. In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, industrial conglomerates like <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2009\/01\/16\/news\/companies\/citigroup\/\">Citigroup<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/40897532\">Motorola<\/a> broke up, while others came <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/08\/07\/markets\/thebuzz\/index.htm?postversion=2008080711\">under pressure<\/a> from activist investors to do so. Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/564bde63-749a-463a-ac00-8f8b0d171577\">AIG<\/a> separated its life ins. arm from its property and casualty arm. Companies like Siemens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-08\/honeywell-to-spin-off-quantum-unit-in-merger-with-software-firm?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Honeywell International<\/a> and United Technologies Corporation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/11\/26\/united-technologies-to-announce-its-intention-to-separate-into-3-companies.html\">UTC<\/a>) have also been splitting up or slimming down to optimize their operations over the past few years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, why do these breakups happen?<\/strong> While the reasons for streamlining their operations differ \u2014 with some, like Johnson & Johnson, looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/12\/business\/johnson-johnson-split.html?\">offload liability weight<\/a> while others, like GE, attempting to fix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2019-general-electric-rise-and-downfall\/?sref=mmeFTDW1\">missteps<\/a> of the past \u2014 the fact remains that companies often have to shed deadweight to continue pleasing their shareholders. The rationale for consolidating companies is almost always increased efficiency. But once a conglomerate reaches critical mass and the system stops working, and people realize that businesses rise and fall together, breakups become more attractive, says the Wall Street Journal\u2019s Jason Zweig explains (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/video\/series\/news-explainers\/why-conglomerates-split-up\/F7EF3E9D-2D5D-4732-AA79-F41889C7D039?mod=hp_lead_pos5\">watch, runtime: 5:52<\/a>). In the long run, the break ups promise to create more value for investors. Additionally, companies move more slowly and get bogged down by bureaucracy as they grow, making it difficult for them to remain nimble market players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conglomerate breakups are perceived differently in the US than in Europe or Asia. <\/strong>In the US, it is widely accepted that oversized, underperforming companies may be broken up to provide more value. The recent breakups of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/toshiba-split-japan-management-division-keiretsu-cross-shareholding-foreign-activist-investor-11637272011\">Toshiba<\/a> in Japan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b87a3c01-8036-4b8a-99d7-f5eca243222a\">Siemens<\/a> in Germany, for instance, were met with more resistance due to the perception that the breakups were a result of the failure of those companies' management.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This isn\u2019t only happening abroad:<\/strong> Orascom Investment Holding (OIH) announced <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7b31a803-3d77-4a46-a78b-2fe80b8bcf8c\">last year<\/a> its plans for a \u201chorizontal demerger\u201d to allow the company to delineate between its investments in financial services and other industries. The split saw OIH spin off its assets including investment bank Beltone and non-bank financial services player Sarwa Capital into Orascom Financial Holding. OIH retained the rest of its holdings and investments in nine subsidiaries and sister companies, including \u200b\u200bits Pyramids plateau venture as well as legacy assets including a mobile network in North Korea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Industrial conglomerates may be losing favor \u2014 but tech conglomerates are on the rise.<\/strong> While large industrial conglomerates may be scaling down, tech companies like Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Tesla are consolidating \u2014 not to mention diversifying \u2014 their business lines, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/howardhyu\/2021\/11\/15\/many-big-companies-are-splitting-but-conglomerates-are-here-to-stay\/?sh=e714ac263726\">one Forbes contributor<\/a> referring to the tech companies as the third wave of conglomerates.
