nose, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/asia-to-roll-out-first-inhaled-and-nasal-spray-covid-vaccineswill-they-work-11663752601?mod=hp_lead_pos11\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports. While existing vaccines have reduced symptomatic disease, severe illness, and death, they have not had much success in preventing mild infections or transmission. Scientists say the new vaccine method may hold more promise for preventing the spread of covid-19 because they work in the nose and lungs, where we first encounter the virus during transmission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How it works: <\/strong>An intranasal vaccine could build up immunity in the upper airway tract, effectively block infection and transmission, and also stimulate the immune system better than injected vaccines leading to longer-lasting protection, a scientist told the WSJ. The mechanism of the vaccine is similar to the injectable versions, using an adenovirus \u2014 a virus that causes the common cold \u2014 engineered to include the genetic coding of the spike protein located on the surface of the coronavirus. Once the vaccine is inhaled, the genetic code tells human cells to make the spike protein, triggering an immune response that can offer protection if you later encounter the real covid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But are they actually effective? <\/strong>China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cansinotech.com\/html\/1\/179\/180\/1100.html\">Convidecia Air<\/a> published the results of a trial on 130 people which reported that two doses of its vaccine generated an antibody response similar to one dose of an injected vaccine. India\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bharatbiotech.com\/images\/press\/Bharat-Biotech-iNCOVACC-Worlds-First-Intra-Nasal-Vaccine-Receives-Approval.pdf\">iNCOVACC<\/a> concluded two clinical trials this year including a trial of over 3k unvaccinated people who received two doses of the nasal vaccine and another booster trial with 875 people who received a single nasal vaccine dose following two doses of another vaccine. The trials showed iNCOVACC produced a strong immune response, but didn\u2019t report whether it reduced symptomatic disease.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Is the race to be the founder of a \u201cspace economy\u201d underway?<\/strong> Four American companies are bidding to replace the International Space Station (ISS) with a privately-owned and operated station, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f50fba1d-5f03-4035-8302-535319f9338c\">the Financial Times<\/a> reports. The ISS will be decommissioned by the end of the decade, leaving a gap for space-based research but it will also open up the chance for the private sector to expand into manufacturing, tourism, entertainment and more. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axiomspace.com\/\">Axiom Space<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nanoracks.com\/\">Nanoracks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueorigin.com\/\">Blue Origin<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northropgrumman.com\/\">Northrop Grumman<\/a> have been selected to develop commercially viable models, although there are concerns on whether the commercial market will be big enough to sustain private stations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking beyond research: <\/strong>The ISS research lab and microgravity environment has supported thousands of groundbreaking experiments and discoveries across a range of scientific disciplines, NASA says, helping with the development of cancer meds, Alzheimer\u2019s research, and even improving fabric softener with space-based research. But now companies are hopeful that new private sector stations will be designed with the capacity to produce certain products at scale for sale back on Earth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The space market will pull in big money:<\/strong> Estimates for the size of the \u2018space economy\u2019 reach as high as USD 1 tn a year by 2040, the FT says, citing Citi, but the annual sales for commercial space stations is estimated at just USD 8 bn. Out of the four initial contracts awarded, NASA will select one or more for the final contracts around 2025 who will earn an estimated USD 1 bn in annual revenues from the space agency to fulfill That strength is problematic for emerging<\/strong><strong> markets and the global economy at large.<\/strong> Spurred by successive interest rate hikes from the US Federal Reserve as the central bank pulled out all the stops to cap soaring inflation, the greenback has been rallying since the beginning of the year, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/BBDXY:IND\">Bloomberg USD Spot Index<\/a> up some 12% year-to-date. The currency\u2019s rise, while beneficial in some ways for the US economy, is a growing source of concern for the global economy as a whole, and emerging markets in particular.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First thing\u2019s first: Why the USD has been rallying so much to begin with:<\/strong> The Fed kicked off a monetary tightening cycle at the beginning of the year to quell record-high inflation. Although the rest of the world\u2019s central banks \u2014 including Egypt\u2019s \u2014 have also begun raising interest rates, the US is outpacing most, making the USD an ever-more attractive safe haven. The Fed is widely expected to announce today its third successive 75-bps hike when the meeting wraps tomorrow. Higher interest rates \u201csparked selling in stocks and bonds, driving up the two-year Treasury yield, which typically moves with expectations for Fed policy,\u201d leading investors to seek shelter in the USD, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-dollar-strength-lifts-americans-relative-spending-power-11662304836?mod=article_inline\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additionally, there are several other fundamentals underpinning the USD<\/strong>, including the strong jumping-off point from the US\u2019 covid-19 macroeconomic response and the fact that the US is not exposed to \u201cegregiously expensive foreign energy,\u201d former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-09\/summers-says-dollar-can-go-further-with-huge-advantage-for-us?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. \u201cAll of those various factors are making [the US] a safe haven, a mecca for capital \u2014 and that\u2019s causing resources to flow into the USD,\u201d Summers said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does all this mean for the US? It depends whether you\u2019re on Wall Street or Main Street.<\/strong> For Main Street \u2014 finance-world speak for smaller businesses that reflect the broader or real economy \u2014 a strengthening USD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-dollar-strength-lifts-americans-relative-spending-power-11662304836?mod=article_inline\">means higher purchasing power<\/a> for US consumers thanks to imports being cheaper. But on Wall Street, investors are growing increasingly concerned that the strengthening greenback will weigh on US corporate earnings and the global economy, particularly as emerging markets reckon with higher debt costs and a weaker lower currency, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/for-wall-street-a-strong-dollar-is-front-and-center-11662849218\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The outlook for emerging markets looks far <\/strong><strong>bleaker<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> A strengthening USD is \u201ca major headwind for local currency assets in emerging markets,\u201d particularly as the currency\u2019s appreciation comes at the same time as a slowdown in global economic growth and higher interest rates in developed markets, Tellimer Research Strategy and Head of Equity Research Hasnain Malik wrote in a note.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The upside:<\/strong> Equities and currencies in emerging markets both \u201clook cheap,\u201d Malik writes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The caveat:<\/strong> Currencies being cheap isn\u2019t enough, and must be \u201caccompanied by credible monetary policy and a manageable level of external account pressure,\u201d he notes. And for many emerging markets, any upside from having a weaker currency and therefore more attractive export prospects is outweighed by the higher cost of USD borrowing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/finance-and-economics\/2022\/09\/08\/why-the-dollar-is-strong-and-why-that-is-a-problem\">the Economist<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is all coming at a time when debt piles are quite large, especially because of covid-era borrowing:<\/strong> There is currently some USD 83 bn-worth of USD-denominated debt across emerging markets that will by due by the end of next year, according to data from the Institute of International Finance cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/bpea-articles\/the-global-dollar-cycle\/\">Brookings<\/a>. And many markets aren\u2019t ready to face that debt pile, University of Chicago\u2019s Booth School of Business finance professor Raghuram Rajan tells the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/dollars-rise-spells-trouble-for-global-economies-11663437428?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>. \u201cMany countries have not been through a cycle of much higher interest rates since the 1990s. There\u2019s a lot of debt out there augmented by the borrowing in the pandemic,\u201d which is expected to \u201cwiden\u201d the stress in emerging markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens now?<\/strong> Further USD appreciation could be \u201cthe straw that breaks the camel\u2019s back, cautions Oxford Economics\u2019 head of emerging markets research. \u201cYou\u2019re already getting frontier markets on the tipping point toward crisis, the last thing they need is a strong USD.\u201d Economists and policymakers are considering the possibility of a repeat of the 1985 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/p\/plaza-accord.asp\">Plaza Accord<\/a>, which saw the US, France, West Germany, the UK, and Japan coordinating to depreciate the USD relative to the JPY and Germany\u2019s Deutsch mark. However, the possibility of such a coordinated effort appears to be relatively slim, as the contemporary global economy and political dynamics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/econographics\/dont-expect-a-plaza-accord-2-0-to-reverse-the-dollars-surge\/\">are vastly different<\/a> from where they were some four decades
