A second phase of stake sales also worth USD 2.5-3 bn will follow later, El Said added, without disclosing an exact timeline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The international press is broadly focused this afternoon on Ukraine pushing back<\/strong><strong> Russian forces in Ukraine\u2019s southeast<\/strong> as Kyiv works to retake Kharkiv. The story is on the front pages of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/98519e8a-576f-4e12-a5e2-1652d05cd9da\">Financial Times<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/russia-withdraws-more-forces-from-northeast-ukraine-as-kyiv-presses-advance-11662980194\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-accuses-russia-attacking-power-grid-revenge-offensive-2022-09-11\/\">Reuters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-11\/ukraine-latest-atomic-plant-shut-safely-after-power-restored?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/12\/ukraines-counterattack-around-kharkiv-inflicts-defeat-on-russia.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also getting ink: Britain\u2019s economy grew at a slower pace than expected in July,<\/strong><strong> increasing the possibility that the country could already be in a recession<\/strong>, according to fresh data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/grossdomesticproductgdp\/bulletins\/gdpmonthlyestimateuk\/july2022\">Office for National Statistics<\/a>. GDP increased by 0.2% from June, which was less than the median estimate of 0.4%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uk-economy-grows-by-less-than-expected-july-2022-09-12\/\">Reuters<\/a> reported. The slower-than-anticipated expansion was caused by a combination of factors, including labor shortage and rising costs: UK inflation is currently at a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3c8598dc-8617-4343-8c7d-5970ff8ce2ec\">40-year high<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>IMF member countries (including Egypt) could have access to an additional 50% top-up<\/strong><strong> of their quotas from the lender<\/strong> if the institution approves a proposal it is reportedly discussing at an informal board session today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/exclusive-imf-eyes-expanded-access-emergency-aid-food-shocks-sources-2022-09-12\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing sources with knowledge of the matter. The potential extra funding, which would be unconditional and would not permanently change countries\u2019 borrowing quotas, is designed to weather the impact of spiraling global food prices. Global food shortages and supply chain disturbances on the back of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, drove the food price index to rise by 10 points y-o-y in August, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7ba129c2-2ba3-4767-af54-acee6c1e917e\">recent data<\/a> from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The proposal comes as <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/749b35e6-ac62-4dbd-8826-5b09c99fdfad\">we\u2019re in talks<\/a><\/strong><strong> for additional funding from the IMF<\/strong>, but aren\u2019t expecting a super-sized package. Finance Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1ec7aa48-f76a-4437-9a79-f8670efc25d6\">Mohamed Maait<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5ac83b64-39ec-4a4d-9127-30c5818f81c2\">other officials<\/a>dialed back expectations since Egypt has exhausted its funding quota.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our friend Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin is with the good folks at AmCham<\/strong> for a luncheon from 1-4pm CLT. The upgrade \u2014 known as <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/upgrades\/merge\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">the Merge<\/a> \u2014 aims to shift the platform to a more energy-efficient infrastructure, which could be a game changer for an industry plagued by concerns about the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8b4efeab-ca1a-486c-8524-aa9bc84448dc\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">detrimental impacts<\/a> it has on the environment. A change this big has not come easy: The Merge has experienced years of delays and is still facing skepticism from thousands in the industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why crypto has desperately needed this for years:<\/strong> Every year, BTC mining \u2014 where thousands of computers compete with each other to append transactions in a system known as \u201cproof-of-work\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/ccaf.io\/cbeci\/index\/comparisons\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">consumes more energy than Belgium<\/a>, according to the University of Cambridge\u2019s Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index. Ethereum\u2019s consumption is estimated to be roughly a third of Bitcoin\u2019s, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ethereum-merge-big-deal-crypto-environment\/#:~:text=Ethereum's%2520consumption%2520is%2520usually%2520pegged,is%2520generally%2520regarded%2520as%2520unacceptable.\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">Wired<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will The Merge cut energy consumption? <\/strong>This rests on the shift from a \u201cproof-to-work\u201d system to a \u201cproof-of-stake\u201d system. The proof-of-work system relies on using computers to run software that solves complex puzzles to confirm transactions. The owner of the computer that solves the puzzle is rewarded with new coins in the digital currency they are verifying. The proof-of-stake system, on the other hand, will see limited groups of crypto investors deposit at least 32 ether (ETH) \u2014 which is about USD 61k at current market prices \u2014 in a shared pool, with each exchange picking a random one of the investors \u2014 also referred to as validators \u2014 to verify the transaction and reap the rewards. It essentially acts like a lottery, and does not require electricity or high-powered computers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is it so expensive?<\/strong> The 32 ETH sum acts as an incentive for participants to have a stake in the success of the network \u2014 ensuring they use up-to-date, secure software, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/08\/19\/everything-to-know-about-the-ethereum-merge\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">Fortune<\/a> writes. It also provides financial incentives for users to stake their ETH and cash in on its yields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why \u201cThe Merge\u201d?<\/strong> Ethereum programmers have already taken a big step towards making proof-of-stake work, after releasing a proof-of-stake crypto platform called the Beacon Chain in 2020. The platform has been undergoing testing for the past two years, and is now finally ready to merge with the main public Ethereum blockchain. The Beacon Chain currently has <a href=\"https:\/\/beaconscan.com\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">over 415,000 validators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not just about energy \u2014 the upgrade will help lay foundations for much more affordable transactions: <\/strong>The transition to proof of stake is a \u201ccritical precursor\u201d to realizing another layer of technology that can help bring \u201cgas fees\u201d \u2014 transaction fees that can hit highs of up to <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptobriefing.com\/ethereum-gas-fees-touch-200-gwei-per-transaction-defiers-farm-yams\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">USD 200<\/a> when there\u2019s a lot of demand on the platform, which has limited capacity \u2014 down by nearly 100%, the Ethereum Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/upgrades\/merge\/#misconceptions\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">says<\/a>. Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin predicts these fees could drop to as low as USD 0.002-0.05 with the help of a technology that processes transactions on a separate chain, and then records a compressed version on the main Ethereum blockchain to help relieve some of the pressure on the blockchain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Merge can also push Ethereum up the ranks of cryptocurrencies: <\/strong>The system upgrade will relieve miners of intense \u201cselling pressure,\u201d which in turn will reduce the \u201cinflation rate of supply,\u201d research firm FSInsight said in a report cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2022\/08\/16\/fsinsight-ether-may-well-surpass-bitcoins-market-cap-in-next-12-months\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">CoinDesk<\/a>. This will cut Ether\u2019s issuances by 87%, allowing Ethereum to potentially eclipse BTC in market cap over the next year. Ethereum\u2019s current market cap of around USD 226 bn is nearly half of BTC\u2019s USD 461 bn, according to CoinDesk data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The upgrade is not without its controversy: <\/strong>While most in the industry are supportive of the shift, some \u2014 mostly miners lamenting the losses they might sustain from the shift \u2014 are critical. Some are also concerned that proof-of-stake could make Ethereum more centralized and less secure, a concern that has threatened cryptocurrencies for a while now. In the proof-of-stake system, so-called \u201cvalidators\u201d will come from a pool of entities holding large amounts of staked Ether (Ether deposited on the Beacon Chain). It will become inherently easier for these large organizations to become validators since they already hold large stakes in the coin and are able to make the large deposits required, as opposed to a regular run-of-the-mill owner of the coin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disclaimer: These organizations also act as custodians for smaller holders of Ether<\/strong>, which means they don\u2019t actually own most of what they hold.
