It is, however, raining earnings as companies report their 2Q and 1H results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-01\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Unemployment rate holds steady q-o-q:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.2% in 2Q 2022 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fdc538eb-17e8-4d52-b43d-e602878b8e18\">preceding quarter<\/a>, data by official statistics agency CAPMAS showed (<a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/8\/Unemployment-Q2-2022.pdf\">pdf<\/a>). The rate is down by 0.1 percentage points in comparison to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dbe5793d-845b-4c06-9147-dd5f4354509f\">same quarter<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The international business press is mostly leading with disappointing economic data out<\/strong><strong> of China leading to a surprise interest rate cut.<\/strong> Industrial production, retail sales, and real estate investment figures all rose in July, China\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stats.gov.cn\/english\/PressRelease\/202208\/t20220815_1887339.html\">National Bureau of Statistics<\/a> said, but these figures fell below analyst expectations. The People\u2019s Bank of China responded by slashing interest rates by 10 bps in a bid to boost the country\u2019s growth. The low water levels come as a result of heat waves across Europe that are drying up rivers and waterways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Europe has already been contending with soaring gas prices and is facing the prospect<\/strong><strong> of rationing in the coming months<\/strong>, after <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2ea3b809-63f2-478e-b6b1-d0e37177366f\">Russia curbed gas supplies<\/a> to several European countries, with shipments through the key Nord Stream pipeline at around 20% of capacity. The increased demand for gas could set back governments\u2019 efforts to reduce gas consumption and store more for colder months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With that energy crunch coming in hot, it\u2019s all the more important for Europe to slash red<\/strong><strong> tape for renewables players:<\/strong> Two of the world\u2019s largest renewable energy companies are voicing their frustration over delayed approvals for new wind farms, arguing that such delays risk green goals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/19d502c7-c1f7-4b07-9ad6-67f110507cad\">the Financial Times<\/a> reports, citing the companies\u2019 chief execs. Denmark\u2019s Vestas Wind Systems, the world\u2019s biggest wind turbine manufacturer, and \u00d8rsted, an offshore wind farm developer, are urging governments to accelerate approvals for projects in the wind industry that could face knotty processes and legal hurdles. Navigating the bureaucratic maze of approvals can be so arduous and time-consuming that \u201cturbine designs [become] obsolete by the time permits are granted,\u201d the salmon-colored paper says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Governments need to step it up:<\/strong> \u201cWe need a fundamental review on how we dramatically shorten the consenting process,\u201d \u00d8rsted chief executive Mads Nipper said. Vestas chief executive Henrik Andersen believes that the government is not exerting much effort in solving the energy crisis. \u201cWe spend a lot of time listening to why they\u2019re going to apologize for why they didn\u2019t do what they should have done in the past five years. Though it will take time for the medical community to feel comfortable starting clinical trials on humans using data gathered without experimenting on animals, the rise of this alternative tech is a key step to getting the ball rolling, pharma reps tell the salmon-colored paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What exactly is MPS?<\/strong> <strong>Essentially, miniature human organs or organ systems grown in a lab.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ntp.niehs.nih.gov\/whatwestudy\/niceatm\/test-method-evaluations\/mps\/index.html\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">MPS<\/a> uses human cell-based models to help scientists study organs and how pathogens and toxicants affect their functioning \u2014 helping to replace or reduce animal use in these processes. The models include tumoroids, which replicate miniature human tumors in a dish; organoids, stem cell tissue that resembles miniature human organs; and organs-on-a-chip, plastic blocks lined with stem cells and a circuit that simulates the response of a human organ or organ system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even besides the ethical benefits, there are key scientific advantages to using tech designed to replicate human tissue: <\/strong>Scientists\u2019 growing ability to interpret human genomes has shown that, despite having saved \u201cmns of lives\u201d over the years, animal testing quite often doesn\u2019t accurately show what kind of medical treatment will work on people, a senior figure at AstraZeneca tells the FT. There are many experimental treatments \u2014 particularly for cancer \u2014 that haven\u2019t entered the clinical trial stage until being proven safe in animal testing, despite these results having \u201cpatchy reliability.\u201d MPS opens up the potential for pharma companies to test interactions between different kinds of medication on systems that replicate the human body, pharma leaders say.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MPS allows for the study of human systems that have no animal equivalent:<\/strong> Out of 7k known rare human diseases, only 400 are currently being actively researched because there are no animal models to allow for study and medical testing, a chief scientist of an organ-on-a-chip company tells the FT. MPS \u201c[fills] a void where animal models don\u2019t exist,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it could reduce costs across the board: <\/strong>Within five years, the tech could substantially reduce research and development costs, by allowing real biological tests to occur earlier in the development process, says one research scientist. This would boost pharma profitability, but could also reduce medical treatment costs, he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But MPS won\u2019t eliminate the need for animal testing overnight<\/strong>, industry insiders say. French pharma group Sanofi recently received approval for a clinical trial of <a href=\"https:\/\/ncats.nih.gov\/news\/releases\/2022\/researchers-create-3-D-model-for-rare-neuromuscular-disorders-setting-stage-for-clinical-trial\">medication to treat<\/a> a rare autoimmune condition, based only on organ chip data, the FT says. But convincing the broader medical community to completely ditch animal experiments \u2014 which have long been an essential part of guaranteeing medication is safe for human use \u2014 in favor of
