The weekend is almost upon us \u2014 but it\u2019s a mad rush to the finish line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt\u2019s economy grew at a 5.4% clip in 3Q2021-2022 <\/strong>\u2014 its slowest pace yet this fiscal year, as fallout from the war in Ukraine begins to reflect on the economy, according to a cabinet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/411212837715809\">statement<\/a>. 9M figures show the economy growing 7.8%, bolstered by a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4d62e3f0-9d66-4bf5-8447-110e1540903c\">solid 1H<\/a>, which saw 9% growth. It will then expand the initiative to include all its current and future brand-name meds and vaccines. Using a similar process to how solar cells convert sunlight into electricity, it could allow us to produce energy at night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solar panels use visible light produced by the sun: <\/strong>PV cells rely on silicon semiconductors that absorb the photons beamed down by the sun, and convert the thermal energy into electricity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But this technology uses photons from a different source: <\/strong>The researchers used a device called a thermoradiative diode to instead capture energy produced by infrared light that is released by the Earth\u2019s surface at night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solar energy minus the sun:<\/strong> This is still technically a form of solar energy. The infrared light is energy produced by the solar radiation that heats up the planet during the day. At night, these infrared photons are released, and can be captured using the device deployed by the UNSW scientists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The technology is still in its infancy: <\/strong>The device was only able to generate 2.26 MW per square meter of electricity at 1.8% efficiency, which one of the study\u2019s authors admits is \u201crelatively very low power.\u201d By comparison most commercial solar panels range<a href=\"https:\/\/css.umich.edu\/factsheets\/photovoltaic-energy-factsheet#:~:text=PV%20conversion%20efficiency%20is%20the,that%20is%20converted%20to%20electricity.&text=Though%20most%20commercial%20panels%20have,cells%20with%20efficiencies%20approaching%2050%25.\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">between 15-20% efficiency<\/a>. The team anticipates it could increase to some 19.4 MW per square meter or about \u201ca tenth of the power of a solar cell,\u201d under different conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.unsw.edu.au\/news\/science-tech\/night-time-solar-technology-can-now-deliver-power-dark\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">one of the study\u2019s co-authors said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This isn\u2019t the only option for night-time solar:<\/strong> Over on the other side of the Pacific, researchers at Stanford University have outfitted regular solar panels with thermoelectric generators to absorb infrared photons, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2314957-solar-panels-that-work-at-night-produce-enough-power-to-charge-a-phone\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">New Scientist<\/a>. Though the amount of power the researchers have been able to generate has been small \u2014 50 milliwatts per square meter or 0.04 percent of the output of an ordinary solar panel during the daytime \u2014 the technology could eventually be useful tools in powering small devices in remote regions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This discovery could become a helpful supplement to solar power generation but not a substitute: <\/strong>There\u2019s still a long way to go for this technology to be applied at scale and reach a point of higher efficiency but there are already some potential applications researchers have pointed to. Applying these same thermoelectric principles to biomedical devices could eliminate the need for batteries in artificial hearts by harnessing the power of body heat. Another example could include recharging or doing away with batteries on personal devices entirely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But this is where private industry can really step in to help bolster uses for this technology:<\/strong> Similar to how the solar industry was supported by a huge boost in private investment, thermoradiative electricity could benefit from the same kind of attention. \u201c There's still about a decade of university research work to be done here. And then it needs industry to pick it up. If industry can see this is a valuable technology for them, then progress can be extremely fast,\u201d Associate Professor and co-author of the study Ned Ekins-Daukes said.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!--
