BG will become the sole operator of the block once the acquisition is complete. It plans to begin drilling the first well during 1H2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We\u2019ll have more<\/strong> on this story and others in tomorrow\u2019s edition of <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s official: Finland and Sweden handed in formal applications to join NATO this<\/strong><strong> morning. <\/strong>In a dramatic turn of events, Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine has pushed the two countries to abandon their longtime military neutrality in a move that could reshape the European security architecture for decades to come. \u201cThis is a historic moment, which we must seize,\u201d NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/finland-sweden-submit-application-join-nato-2022-05-18\/\">Reuters.<\/a> \u201cI warmly welcome requests by Finland and Sweden to join NATO. You are our closest partners, and your membership in NATO will increase our shared security,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But will Turkey block their bid? <\/strong>Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has surprised the allies by saying he would not approve the two countries\u2019 membership, in objection to them hosting members of groups deemed terrorists by Turkey \u2014 namely, the Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK). The potential enlargement needs to be unanimously approved by all 30 of NATO\u2019s members, a process that could take up to a year.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>The European Commission is about to unveil its EUR 210 bn plan to phase out<\/strong><strong> Russian gas<\/strong> over the next four years by looking to other suppliers (like Egypt) and quickening its transition to green energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/eu-map-out-escape-route-russian-fossil-fuels-2022-05-17\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing draft documents it has seen. The plan should outline where the EU plans to get its alternative fuel, whether from Egypt, Israel, or Nigeria, as well as the infrastructure needed to circumvent Russia, according to the newswire. The EU has been rethinking its reliance on Russian energy sources since its invasion of Ukraine, but some hurdles \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/33f449f0-8fe0-49b8-8a7d-0f9e23994b15\">Hungary\u2019s refusal<\/a> to back the embargo \u2014 have left the phase-out plan\u2019s fate uncertain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has been <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/022ca147-bb08-4bb6-ba62-361b7381da4c\">in talks<\/a><\/strong><strong> with the EU over increasing LNG imports for months now<\/strong>, and Italian energy firm Eni has already <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3447a945-6e65-40df-be0e-8cb09f5d1167\">signed an agreement<\/a> to boost Egyptian LNG exports to Europe by boosting its gas production here. We\u2019re a strong option given our prime location just across the Med; our 2018 discovery of the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/113f1ae6-53bc-4426-bbeb-805084941dff\">largest gas field in the region<\/a>; two operating liquefaction plants; and a pact to bring in Israeli gas from our neighbors\u2019 massive offshore fields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEPARATELY- UN chief Antonio Guterres is expected to disclose later today his<\/strong><strong> efforts to bring Ukrainian grain back to global markets<\/strong> after months of disruption due to the war, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/un-chief-expected-disclose-talks-ukraine-grain-exports-un-officials-2022-05-18\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing UN officials. Guterres is reportedly in talks with Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, the US, and the EU to restore grain shipments from Ukraine and revive fertilizer exports from Russia and Belarus. Guterres is expected to discuss this at the <a href=\"https:\/\/media.un.org\/en\/asset\/k1g\/k1grzeugy4#:~:text=United%20States%20Secretary%20of%20State,security%2C%20nutrition%2C%20and%20resilience.\">Global Food Security Call to Action<\/a> ministerial meeting hosted by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken later today. The essential treatment, named ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF), is a high-energy paste made of ingredients including peanuts, oil, sugar and added nutrients. UNICEF needs an additional USD 25 mn in funding in the coming six months to avoid a scenario where 600k children miss out on RUTF. tag-enterprisepm tag-environment tag-fuel wpautop entry\">\n\n\t\n\t<div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n\t\t\n\t\t<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>The pros and cons of carbon capture and storage: <\/strong>While carbon capture and storage (CCS) is being hailed as a pathway that could help the world limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C, the new technology can\u2019t do the job by itself, Financial Times correspondents explain in this short film (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=laGtd-b0vMY\">watch, runtime: 21:31<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>CSS? <\/strong>CSS refers to the process of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) formed during power generation and industrial processes, and storing it underground or under the seabed where it isn\u2019t emitted into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The use of CSS needs to be expanded dramatically for it to make a difference: <\/strong>As of 2021, there are 27 fully operational CSS projects being operated worldwide with around 100 more in the works, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/4\/Global-Status-of-CCS-2021-Global-CCS-Institute-1121.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a> by the Global CSS Institute. These facilities captured around 40 mn tonnes of CO2 during the past year. However, if we depended on CSS alone to keep us under the 1.5\u00b0C benchmark, this figure would have to increase to 1.7 bn tonnes by 2030 \u2014 or a 40x increase over the next eight years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This comes with a huge price tag: <\/strong>The needed infrastructure and technology for CCS is both complex and expensive. For example, a CCS project launched in Norway was expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/norway-ccs-idAFL8N2E23RL\">cost the country USD 2.6 bn<\/a>. Add to this the operating costs as well as the cost for capturing each ton of carbon, which can range anywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/commentaries\/is-carbon-capture-too-expensive\">USD 15-120 per ton<\/a> depending on the CO2 source, and the costs start mounting fast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s where CCUS comes in:<\/strong> In order to make the economics more attractive, there\u2019s also CCUS \u2014 or carbon capture, usage, and storage. CCUS gives the captured carbon a commercial use by reusing it in industries such as soda, fertilizers, plastics, and oil and gas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil and gas are the largest implementers of CCUS, which makes the entire concept a bit counterproductive. <\/strong>The biggest use of captured CO2 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/fecm\/science-innovation\/oil-gas-research\/enhanced-oil-recovery\">enhanced<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/fecm\/science-innovation\/oil-gas-research\/enhanced-oil-recovery\">oil recovery<\/a> which is when captured carbon is injected into a reservoir to create more fuel and releases more carbon in the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which brings us to the biggest issue with both CCS and CCUS: the potential of prolonging the use of fossil fuels. <\/strong>It\u2019s no surprise that the oil and gas sector is one of the biggest proponents and investors in these kinds of projects as the technology poses an expensive but effective way to reduce emissions. Fossil fuel producers could use CCS and CCUS as a quick fix and ensure they can fly under the radar during the green revolution without overhauling their operations. This could delay the transition to renewables as massive investments are poured instead into these technologies. Moreover, even if the oil and gas industry reduces enough CO2 to cover the manufacturing process of producing fuel, 90% of the sector\u2019s emissions are derived from the consumption of hydrocarbons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And there are question-marks over safety:<\/strong> With more carbon capture pipelines being proposed in the US, a <a href=\"https:\/\/pstrust.org\/carbon-dioxide-pipelines-dangerous-and-under-regulated\/\">report<\/a> this year highlighted the potential dangers that come with transporting CO2 and cast doubt on whether current regulations are able to prevent them from endangering human health and the environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nonetheless, it can be an effective solution depending on how it\u2019s rolled out: <\/strong>Since the world isn\u2019t ready to completely dispose of dirty energy, carbon capture can be an effective way to reduce emissions from polluting industries. However, it\u2019s important to deploy carbon capture in parallel with other sustainable solutions such as blue hydrogen, green hydrogen, wind energy, and solar energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is on track to debut its own carbon capture projects:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s Oil Ministry and Italian energy firm Eni <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4ed7b3c1-2514-4f68-9b61-11486f0e348a\">will announce<\/a> joint CCUS initiatives at the upcoming COP27 summit in November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And we have the perfect place for them: <\/strong>An efficient way to set up CCS and CCUS infrastructure is to create hubs or clusters where several highly-industrialized companies share the technology \u2014 and share the costs. In recent years, Egypt has been moving forward with the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/77d52ae3-df15-4263-a3dc-368a8f50259c\">introduction of industrial zones<\/a>, which could be ideal places to roll out carbon capture projects, offering a group of companies access to the technology without them having to bear the high costs of setting it up.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!--
