Amazon\u2019s purchase represents 1% of EFG Hermes\u2019 GDRs. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/38422146-4e58-4ee9-b22f-2dfec51c3f9b\">The story<\/a> has been updated on our website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>#1- Gov\u2019t announces some of its strategy to spur private sector activity in the economy:<\/strong> The government plans to more than double the private sector\u2019s contribution to the country\u2019s economy to 65%, from 30% currently, within the next three years, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said at a highly-anticipated press conference today (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AlmasryAlyoum\/videos\/314806640807091\">watch, runtime: 47:57<\/a>). This target rests on the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d5450603-b95c-4cb3-88aa-667655d9ce03\">long-term strategy<\/a> to reduce the state\u2019s involvement in the economy, which will be announced \u201cwithin days\u201d and will provide a roadmap for reducing the state\u2019s economic activities, charting which industries it will withdraw from and when, as well as ring fencing strategic sectors where it wants to retain a presence \u2014 all within three years. The government also expects to reach its targets with unspecified incentives geared towards improving the business climate, as well as opening lines of communication with the private sector to help cater to their needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO IN THE STRATEGY:<\/strong> The government\u2019s plan to attract a total of USD 40 bn of local and foreign private sector investment in state-owned assets, at a pace of USD 10 bn annually over the course of the next four years. The assets include new and renewable energy projects, real estate assets in new cities, desalination projects, as well as ICT and education projects. President Abdel Fattah El Sisi had announced this goal <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5391cdf0-e2f5-4354-9608-53fd3237a288\">last month<\/a>. The government has already selected USD 9.1 bn-worth of assets out of this year\u2019s allotted USD 10 bn, and is currently working on appraising assets worth another USD 15 bn as part of a \u201cfast-tracked\u201d component of the strategy, which should be completed this year, Madbouly said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- Unemployment fell in 1Q2022:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s unemployment rate eased to 7.2% during the first quarter of the year, from 7.4% <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/15ca039b-985a-4ced-840e-eb179ca167b2\">in 4Q2021<\/a>, according to the latest data by statistics agency <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/5\/Unemployment-in-Egypt-1Q-2022.pdf\">CAPMAS (pdf)<\/a>. This is the second consecutive quarter during which the jobless rate eased, after remaining somewhat steady over the past year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We\u2019ll have more<\/strong> on these stories and others in tomorrow\u2019s edition of <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>It\u2019s all about energy<\/strong>, with the European Commission considering setting a cap on natural gas prices if Russia cuts off supply to avoid \u201cunbearably high\u201d costs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-14\/eu-considers-gas-price-cap-in-russian-supply-disruption-scenario?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. European energy markets are grappling with uncertainty over gas supplies after Moscow demanded \u201cunfriendly countries\u201d pay for Russian gas in RUB, which would breach EU sanctions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Separately, but also related: Iran says it has the capacity to double its oil exports<\/strong> if there\u2019s sufficient demand, said Mohsen Khojastehmehr, managing director of the National Iranian Oil Company yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-05-14\/iran-says-it-can-double-oil-exports-if-market-needs-more-barrels?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported. His comments come as Iran is engaged in faltering negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear pact \u2014 an agreement would restore Iranian oil exports and grant the country much-needed sanctions relief (in return for curbs on its nuclear program). Analysts estimate that Iran sells as much as 1 mn barrels per day, though the country does not publish official production figures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UKRAINE UPDATE- <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ukrainian military infrastructure in the Lviv region was destroyed this morning<\/strong> due to a Russian missile strike, the region's Governor Maxim Kozitsky announced, reports Reuters. No casualties have since been identified.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The US Senate met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy yesterday<\/strong>, with Senate Leader Mitch McConnell heading the delegation which discussed additional sanctions on Russia as well as a potential USD 40 bn aid package, reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/missile-hits-military-infrastructure-ukraines-lviv-region-governor-2022-05-15\/\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> on the top stories from today\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Amazon snaps up EFG GDRs, with option to swap for valU shares:<\/strong> Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/38422146-4e58-4ee9-b22f-2dfec51c3f9b\">has agreed to purchase<\/a> USD 10 mn worth of EFG Hermes\u2019 London-listed global depositary receipts (GDRs) with an option to convert the investment into an equity stake in EFG\u2019s consumer finance arm valU.<\/li>\n<li><strong>MSCI adds EFG Hermes to global standard index, e-Finance enters small-cap index:<\/strong> EFG Hermes <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bfca0000-c5dd-4380-8c39-000581f81077\">has been added<\/a> to MSCI\u2019s standard equities index from its small cap index following its semi-annual review. discovered the potential benefits of jumping into biodiversity funds, a long-overlooked corner of green finance, <a UK\u2019s Aviva Plc has set up a natural-capital equity fund to invest in companies such as plant-based protein company Beyond Meat Inc, while Jupiter Asset Management has added new multi-asset ecology funds to its series. The market for biodiversity investments could grow by more than 2,000%, according to the Paulson Institute, which estimates that the field could reach as much as USD 93 bn by 2030, up from about USD 4 bn in 2019. With around 50% of the world\u2019s economy derived from biological resources, according to estimates by the World Economic Forum, investors are realizing the importance of actively seeking funds that protect our ecosystems \u2014.the destruction of our natural resources would not just result in a climate disaster, it would lead to massive financial losses.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>Which countries should adopt central bank-backed digital currencies?<\/strong> Nine out of ten central banks surveyed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bis.org\/publ\/bppdf\/bispap123.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) by the Bank for International Settlements are exploring central bank-backed digital currencies (CBDCs). As the demand for physical cash continues to dwindle, with banknote shares in POS transactions shrinking to 11% in North America, 19% in the Asia-Pacific and 27% in Europe, developed countries are steadily investing in CBDCs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The question remains: which countries should adopt CBDCs and which can go without?<\/strong> The survey notes that countries with sturdy payment structures, a variety of noncash options, and whose currencies garner the local population\u2019s trust, such as Poland, will probably have no need of CBDCs. Nations like Peru, who have underlying problems with their retail financial system, may be fertile grounds for CBDCs, something that the Peruvian central bank noted in the survey that payment flows id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a><strong> ENTERPRISE EXPLAINS-<\/strong> <strong>You\u2019ve heard of smart cities \u2014 now get ready for smart industrial <\/strong><strong>parks:<\/strong> Industrial park developers in Egypt are, slowly but surely, beginning to move towards developing smart industrial parks: Clusters of factories and plants built on principles of sustainability, integration, resource efficiency, and waste reduction \u2014 not unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/hardhats\/govt-moving-towards-smart-cities\/\">smart cities<\/a>. But what advantages do smart parks have over regular industrial parks, and do they have the potential to change the manufacturing landscape in Egypt?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s hopping on the smart park bandwagon?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idg-egypt.com\/\">IDG<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/polarisparks.com\/about\/approach\/\">Polaris Parks<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sidc.com.eg\/\">Suez Industrial Development Company (SIDC)<\/a> have all begun introducing smart features to their parks \u2014 whether through infrastructure, supply chain integration, or <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/industries\/egypts-manufacturers-lagging-behind-comes-industrial-automation\/\">Industry 4.0<\/a> support for manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smart parks are also starting to appeal to the public sector: <\/strong>The Trade and Industry Ministry signed an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mti.gov.eg\/English\/MediaCenter\/News\/Pages\/MTI,-UNIDO-sign-project-document-for-development-of-eco-industrial-parks-in-Egypt.aspx\">agreement<\/a> in January with UNIDO to develop two or three industrial parks into eco-industrial \u201cmodels\u201d for other parks in Egypt to emulate, a UNIDO official involved with the project told Enterprise. Support will be offered through a combination of technical assistance and policy advisory. The project, which will cost EUR 1.5 mn to implement and will be financed by the Swiss government, will likely start with the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) \u2014 home to SIDC \u2014 in its first phase, the source added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are smart parks better than their regular counterparts? <\/strong>When it comes to infrastructure, IDG\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e2-alamein.com\/\">e2 Alamein<\/a> park uses advanced technologies that can help detect if any issue happens across the park, and identify what it is, without us having to disrupt any operations or break down walls to see where the issue is coming from, Monica Salama, IDG\u2019s marketing and communications director, told Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What makes a smart park smart? First of all, infrastructure: <\/strong>A smart industrial park uses ICT to improve every aspect of operations from efficiency, to infrastructure that allows for fast internet speeds and connectivity, Louis Ghali, business development manager at Industrial Development Group (IDG), explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSmart\u201d infrastructure can range from lampposts to flood management systems:<\/strong> Technologies like license plate recognition, security cameras, EV-charging lampposts and fire alert systems also help boost efficiency and prevent unnecessary disruptions for all factories inside the park, Ghali added. Flood management systems \u2014 which employ sensors and timers to ration water usage and prevent leakages \u2014 are another important feature of a smart industrial park, especially because consumption of water tends to be extremely high, Polaris Parks General Manager Bassel Shoirah told us, adding that this was one of the technologies Polaris Parks introduced in the past years, along with features like security cameras and LED lights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supply chain integration is another feature of smart parks:<\/strong> A smart park acts like an ecosystem of industries that can collaborate to share \u201cinfrastructure, service and utilities,\u201d and even by-products and waste to help reduce costs and waste generation, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/4\/UNIDO_EIP_Achievements_Publication_Final.pdf\">UNIDO report (pdf<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Industrial symbiosis + industrial clustering help achieve this:<\/strong> IDG employs two concepts at its East Port Said parks: Industrial clustering and industrial symbiosis, Ghali tells us. Industrial clustering is when different factories and feeder industries that work towards a single product are placed in a cluster to help facilitate the manufacturing process. Industrial symbiosis, on the other hand, means providing one factory\u2019s waste to another factory that can use it as raw material to reduce costs of materials for factories and reduce waste generation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This also helps reduce industry\u2019s carbon footprint: <\/strong>It\u2019s very important now for industry in Egypt to reduce its carbon footprint, especially when it comes to attracting foreign investments and becoming a net exporter, Ghali explains. The EU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f429474a-9e8c-4b08-9341-cfafda382c95\">planned carbon tax<\/a> \u2014 which could wipe out the value of our \u201ccheap energy\u201d as soon as next year \u2014 will require manufacturers and industrial parks to consider how to increase efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, he adds. Using Industry 4.0 solutions \u2014 which we help facilitate \u2014 and employing data analysis, which we\u2019re also using in our parks, can easily help reduce emissions by ramping up efficiency at factories within months, he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contrary to popular belief, \u201csmart\u201d and eco-friendly technologies are not always costly. <\/strong>A lot of the technology needed for smart parks are not costly, whether we\u2019re talking about the software or the alert systems, Ghali explained, adding that because the smart park acts as an ecosystem, the costs of maintaining them are shared between the manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And for manufacturers, smart parks help save costs:<\/strong> The network of recycling and reuse-generated cost savings for companies of roughly USD 15 mn per year while reducing pollution and waste outputs in the area for one smart park in Thailand, according to a case study from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/4\/Green-Industrial-Parks_Scale-up_Green-Smart-Industrial-Estate-Model-AMATA-Corp-PCL-GGGI.pdf\">Global Green Growth Institute (pdf)<\/a>. Asia is the leading continent when it comes to the shift towards smart industrial parks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But infrastructure does not come cheap:<\/strong> IDG is investing some EGP 300 mn in digital infrastructure in a period of five years, Ghali added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ultimately, smart parks help accelerate the shift towards Industry 4.0: <\/strong>A smart park should act as a platform or enabler for Industry 4.0 technologies, Ghali explained. Industry 4.0 \u2014 or industrial automation \u2014 refers to automated equipment, control systems, and data points that are used and integrated within a factory to boost efficiency and help operate the factory pretty much independently.
