This leads to a complete disconnect between the two worlds, to the extent that employees can\u2019t remember their coworkers once they leave the office. The main character, Mark (played by Adam Scott), chose to work at the company after his wife died, seeing the eight-hour reprieve from grief as a solid work benefit. But it\u2019s not all sunshine and daisies and the mechanics of how the separation of consciousness works can often lead to dire consequences (you can only imagine what happens when someone quits). There are a lot of adjectives we could use to describe the series: intense, fascinating, mysterious, and even, strangely, feel-good. Food prices are now more than 15% higher than the previous all-time high, recorded in February 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why war in Ukraine exacerbates food supply issues: <\/strong>The two countries provide around <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/19cdf00e-f36b-465c-8115-096d9196dcfc\">a third of the world\u2019s wheat<\/a>, almost 80% of sunflower oil production, and about a fifth of corn exports \u2014 not to mention key <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/strategy-and-corporate-finance\/our-insights\/the-rising-risk-of-a-global-food-crisis\">supplies of fertilizers<\/a> for farmers elsewhere. Grain exports out of Ukraine have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/ukraine-could-lose-6-bln-grain-exports-with-ports-blocked-2022-03-21\/\">stopped almost entirely<\/a> as Russia blockades the country\u2019s sea ports. For the trade that is continuing (largely on the Russian side), increased risk means higher ins. and shipping costs, and a tighter market as some traders steer clear. That all leads to knock-on effects (read: higher prices) in global commodities markets. Looking ahead, one key question is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/10\/world\/europe\/ukraine-farmers-food.html\">how much damage<\/a> Ukraine\u2019s farms have sustained as large swathes of land become battlefields \u2014 and how long it could take for Ukrainian farmers to get back on their feet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER-Food inflation is nothing new. <\/strong>The pandemic, persistent supply-chain issues, and climate change have all been <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/03\/1113332#:~:text=The%20Food%20Price%20Index%2C%20which,by%20vegetable%20oils%20%26%20dairy%20products.\">driving up prices<\/a> and destabilizing global food flows for some time. <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-food-crisis-was-brewing-even-before-the-ukraine-war-but-taking-these-three-steps-could-help-the-most-vulnerable-179519\">Some say<\/a> wealthy nations have failed to address a food crisis that has been coming up in their rear-view mirrors for years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who stands to be hit the hardest?<\/strong> Countries already facing major food security challenges will unsurprisingly bear the brunt of rising prices. A quarter of Africans are facing a food security crisis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/a-quarter-of-africans-face-food-security-crisis-partly-due-to-ukraine-war-red-cross-says-11649176087?mod=Searchresults_pos1&page=1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> quotes Dominik Stillhart, the International Committee of the Red Cross\u2019 global operations director as saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>International nonprofits are raising the alarm over West Africa<\/strong> in particular, where another 11 mn people could be pushed into hunger by this summer, humanitarian organizations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\/press-releases\/west-africa-faces-its-worst-food-crisis-ten-years-over-27-million-people-already\">have said<\/a>. They\u2019re calling on wealthy nations to help plug the USD 4 bn aid financing gap in the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And developed nations aren\u2019t safe either: <\/strong>Price hikes disproportionately hit people on lower incomes no matter where they live, because they spend a greater share of their earnings on essentials. Poorer families could end up sacrificing electricity, healthcare, and heating in order to buy food, be forced to skip meals, or opt for less expensive and less nutritious meals, according to a FAO <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/4\/Info-Note-Ukraine-Russian-Federation.pdf\">information note (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some defensive moves to mitigate the crisis aren\u2019t helping:<\/strong> The war has pushed some countries \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b0de30ab-61c5-41f0-a91f-f7ffd44cecd4\">including Egypt<\/a> \u2014 to respond with export restrictions as they look to secure their domestic needs. The World Trade Organization is urging countries to drop these controls and offer their surplus stock of basic commodities such as vegetable oil and grains to the world market to ease supply shortages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hunger also has its own consequences, <\/strong>chief among them political instability, mass migration, and conflict, the World Food Programme notes (<a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/4\/WFP-food-security-report.pdf\">pdf<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food is a concern in our neck of the woods: <\/strong>Some Middle Eastern nations are \u201cstruggling to access enough food because of a toxic combination of conflict, climate change and the economic aftermath of Covid-19,\u201d the United Nations World Food Programme\u2019s MENA director Corinne Fleischer previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/news\/war-ukraine-pushes-middle-east-and-north-africa-deeper-hunger-food-prices-reach-alarming-highs\">said<\/a>. \u201cPeople\u2019s resilience is at a breaking point. This crisis is creating shock waves in the food markets that touch every home in this region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>For Egypt, wheat is key:<\/strong> We\u2019re the world\u2019s largest importer of wheat, and Russia and Ukraine together supply more than 80% of our imported wheat in peacetime. That wheat largely ends up as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cd6bb322-4455-45ba-a0a8-1cb3976dbdbc\">subsidized bread loaves<\/a>, which are handed out to more than 60 mn Egyptians. With the war threatening our grain supply, the government has moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/92f4b4ca-5ca7-46f5-b048-d298e43bd4ed\">tap new markets<\/a> for imports, up its purchases in the local harvest, and introduce <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cd6bb322-4455-45ba-a0a8-1cb3976dbdbc\">price caps on unsubsidized<\/a> bread. Egypt currently had enough wheat to cover the next 2.6 months\u2019 worth of consumption in early April, the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d4959ef4-a9f1-4ae3-8354-83e891ebea97\">government said<\/a>, down from the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/19cdf00e-f36b-465c-8115-096d9196dcfc\">four-month<\/a> figure announced last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can be done? Targeted emergency financing, for one. <\/strong>Multilateral lenders and food bodies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2022\/04\/13\/pr22117-joint-statement-wbg-imf-wfp-and-wto-call-for-urgent-coordinated-action-on-food-security\">calling for<\/a> a coordinated financing push from wealthy nations to help address the problem in developing countries, but little concrete action has so far been taken. Some are <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ff909552-1f31-43b4-a8e8-54dbb6a7be83\">hoping that could change within days<\/a> as world leaders discuss the issue in Washington this week amid the IMF and World Bank spring meetings. The EU has already said it will provide Egypt <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2cd427aa-f06b-4054-ad8f-a96bc1c9de6a\">with EUR 100 mn in support<\/a> to help us tackle rising food prices, part of a freshly announced EUR 225 mn Food and Resilience Facility for MENA countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking to the long term, there are systemic issues to be faced: <\/strong>\u201cEvery country going forward needs to continue to transform its food system and make it more resilient in the long term,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2022\/04\/05\/q-a-with-juergen-voegele-on-food-security\">says World Bank Vice-President<\/a> Juergen Voegele.
