The USD 500 mn project will be fully funded by Egyptian companies and entities, including the Alexandria Port Authority, the Suez Canal Authority, the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport, and EGX-listed Alexandria Container and Cargo Handling. A crypto exchange wants the answer to be yes:<\/strong> Crypto exchange FTX has made an intriguing proposal to US regulators: Offering crypto derivatives trading directly to users, without the intermediation of traditional brokers. The proposal by CEO Sam Bankman-Fried is part of a bigger plan, which could see him tap into the mainstream finance industry after taking over the crypto futures market, he said, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b0917d6b-69bc-4d48-ac21-33993bda8043\">Financial Times<\/a>. The US-based firm wants to expand the do-it-yourself, 24\/7 practices developed for digital assets, bypass traditional gatekeepers, and have computers make trades and margin calls without opening or closing times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is, of course, some potential resistance to the concept:<\/strong> FTX\u2019s approach to mechanizing exchange activity could be a \u201cdouble-edged sword\u201d creating potential for \u201cdestabilizing\u201d upwards or downwards market moves, a Houston University professor of finance. But it\u2019s not a proposal without merit, nor is it one that should be ignored altogether, he said. \u201cThe request represents an innovative proposal that deserves careful consideration,\u201dsaid Rostin Behnam, chair of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Amazon <\/strong><strong>makes big<\/strong><strong> stride <\/strong><strong>in race<\/strong><strong> towards internet from space: <\/strong>Project Kuiper \u2014 Amazon\u2019s internet-from-space initiative \u2014 has booked 83 launches over the next five years to send its internet-beaming satellites into space, the company announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/press.aboutamazon.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/amazon-secures-83-launches-arianespace-blue-origin-and-united\">press release<\/a>. But they\u2019re hugely popular \u2014 and arguably the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/all-of-the-worlds-money-and-markets-in-one-visualization-2020\/\">biggest asset class<\/a> in the world. So what exactly are derivatives and how do we use them?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Financial derivatives defined: <\/strong>Put simply, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/d\/derivative.asp\">derivative is a financial instrument<\/a> that derives its value from an underlying asset. When the value of the underlying asset changes, the value of the derivative changes, too. They\u2019re primarily used for hedging against market risk, and speculating (making wagers) on changes in value to the underlying assets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How big is the market? Hard to say, but derivatives basically have a foot in every door:<\/strong> The current size of the financial derivatives market is difficult to accurately estimate. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/ask\/answers\/052715\/how-big-derivatives-market.asp\">put it as high<\/a> as more than USD 1 qdrn (i.e. 1 mn bns), largely because derivatives are available on almost every asset class, including equities, commodities, bonds, currencies, oil, real estate \u2014 and even predictions about the weather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Collectively, the total underlying value of derivatives eclipses the market value of their assets:<\/strong> The total notional value \u2014 or underlying value \u2014 of all contracts in the derivatives market was estimated at USD 610 tn in 2020, while the gross market value \u2014 or the price an asset would fetch in the marketplace \u2014 was around USD 15.5 tn. The reason the notional value of derivative contracts is nearly 40x higher than the market value all <a href=\"https:\/\/strategiccfo.com\/articles\/investment-shareholders\/financial-leverage\/\">comes down to leverage<\/a>, which is capital used to try to magnify investment results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This allows investors to make speculative plays using derivatives with very little upfront cost<\/strong> \u2014 potentially bringing in substantial gains, but also magnifying potential losses. This is one reason why derivative trading is both so alluring, and \u2014 if undertaken unwisely \u2014 so risky.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are four main types of financial derivatives:<\/strong> Forwards, futures, options, and swaps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1- Forward contracts (forwards): <\/strong>Forwards are the OG derivatives (they <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/referenceworkentry\/10.1057\/978-1-349-95121-5_2974-1\">may date back to<\/a> ancient Mesopotamia). Two parties who sign a forward contract agree to trade a particular underlying asset on a predetermined date (date of maturity) for a predetermined price (known as the strike). This is particularly useful for large businesses that want to hedge against changing market values for things like commodities and currencies. It allows them to lock in a price for raw materials for a future date so they can make longer-term production decisions, even amid market volatility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Easy to customize but unregulated: <\/strong>Forwards don\u2019t trade on a centralized exchange, but over-the-counter (OTC) between dealers. They\u2019re easily customizable, making them particularly useful for hedging, but because they\u2019re unregulated they also carry a greater degree of default risk than other instruments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- Future contracts (futures):<\/strong> Futures are very similar to forwards, but they\u2019re standardized, regulated, and traded on centralized exchanges. Every day, traders buy and sell mns of futures contracts on company stocks, oil and gas, gold, and a range of commodities, as this clip on derivatives explains (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LQrBzl0DMBA\">watch, runtime:10:48<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has its own futures exchange <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9cea854a-31d6-4c26-a73c-893cf923f058\">in the works<\/a><\/strong>, which last we heard is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/64766cdc-5103-4b0f-8ca0-96b6e3c87f52\">set to launch<\/a> before the end of this year. In anticipation, we wrote this <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5aed24f4-4353-4762-aa93-153354e8fb29\">nifty explainer<\/a> all about futures last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- Option contracts (options): <\/strong>An option is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmcmarkets.com\/en\/trading-guides\/derivative-trading\">an agreement<\/a> between two parties that allows one of them the right \u2014 but, crucially, not the obligation \u2014 to trade an asset on or before a set date, for a set price. Options can trade on exchanges or OTC. Options can be used either to hedge, or to speculate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Put option or call option?<\/strong> A put option gives the seller the right to sell an underlying asset at a set date for a set price \u2014 for which the seller pays a premium. A call option gives this right to the buyer, who pays a premium. The size of these premiums is determined by a host of market-driven factors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swap contracts (swaps): <\/strong>In a swap, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H1TE1raBg0Q\">two counterparties exchange<\/a> the cashflow of one party\u2019s financial instrument for those of the other party\u2019s financial instrument, for the amount of time stated in the agreement, fund manager and writer Patrick Boyle explains (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H1TE1raBg0Q\">watch, runtime: 17:35<\/a>). This can be done with interest rates, currencies, commodities, or \u2014 most infamously \u2014 credit defaults, which <a href=\"https:\/\/core.ac.uk\/download\/pdf\/82006965.pdf\">many economists say<\/a> helped cause the 2008 financial crisis because they were overleveraged. The exact way swaps play out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/economics-econometrics-and-finance\/credit-derivative\">depends on<\/a> the financial asset being
