The benchmark EGX30 closed up 2.7%, with today\u2019s market rally led primarily by real estate stocks. Heliopolis Housing and Development, TMG Holding, and Madinet Nasr for Housing and Development closed the day comfortably in the green.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>#1- \u2018Tis the season for local wheat farming incentives + regulation: <\/strong>Egypt has hiked local wheat procurement prices to range EGP 865-885 per ardeb to encourage farmers to sell more of their crop to the government amid global supply shortages, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/359882906182136\">statement<\/a>by the Cabinet read. The new price tag is lower than the EGP 1k per ardeb farmers had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ee61f6b6-d6df-4fa9-b38b-2964b7f8589a\">demanded<\/a>, citing surging inflation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The higher procurement price comes as the government is <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37AC2Id\">moving to regulate<\/a><\/strong><strong> the<\/strong><strong> market<\/strong>, with Supply Minister Ali El Moselhy issuing a decision requiring farmers to sell a minimum of 12 ardebs of wheat per feddan, and barring them from selling to others without a license. Farmers who sell at least 90% of their crop yield to their government will receive subsidized fertilizers for the summer harvest season, according to the new regs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2- Egypt and Israel will operate direct flights between Tel Aviv and Sharm El Sheikh for<\/strong><strong> the first time starting next month<\/strong>, under an agreement between President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Israeli newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/bennett-sissi-agree-to-launch-direct-flights-from-tel-aviv-to-sharm-el-sheikh-1.10678272\">Haaretz<\/a> reports, citing Bennett. EgyptAir first <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/baf8b6df-9dda-46d6-be48-d6045271e691\">opened a flight route<\/a> to Tel Aviv in October following what was Bennett\u2019s first visit to Egypt, and the first for any Israeli PM in over a decade.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> on the top stories from today\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FinMin sees budget deficit widening amid commodities price shock:<\/strong> The Madbouly government sees the FY 2021-2022 budget deficit target widening to 6.9% from 6.7%, Vice Minister of Finance <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f5dcf6d3-746d-4f31-8660-5ea355a52108\">Ahmed Kouchouk said<\/a>, as war-related global price surges are putting a strain on the state budget.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Russia-Ukraine war will curb our economic growth and hit the budget \u2013IMF:<\/strong> Emerging markets including Egypt will <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fc12dd88-de36-4c18-a858-3f4794a3a58d\">need to hedge<\/a> against the economic risks associated with the war in Ukraine, IMF Director for ME and Central Asia Jihad Azour said.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How the commodity price shock is pushing up the price of building materials in Egypt:<\/strong> Local steel and cement prices <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fc70339c-e46a-41d1-8d32-4dbfe09a6050\">have soared<\/a> since the start of the Ukraine conflict, with local manufacturers saying that these increases are necessary as they face soaring input costs, while contractors are lobbying for government support to help them absorb the shock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>HAPPENING LATER TODAY- <\/strong><strong>The US Federal Reserve will kick off the second day of its<\/strong><strong> two-day open market committee meeting<\/strong> at 8pm CLT, followed by a press conference at 10:15pm CLT to announce the outcomes of the meeting. The Fed is widely expected to kick off its monetary tightening cycle today, starting with a 25 bps rate hike. The market previously anticipated the central bank to go bigger and raise interest rates by 50 bps, but now expects the uncertainties triggered by the conflict in Ukraine to have changed its calculations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fed\u2019s decision will be important to keep an eye on here at home, as the Central Bank<\/strong><strong> of Egypt\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee is set to meet next Thursday<\/strong>, 24 March for its second interest rate meeting of the year.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>We\u2019re inching closer to a peace agreement as Moscow and Kyiv begin to find common<\/strong><strong> ground: <\/strong>Russia and Ukraine are approaching a consensus on certain parts of the proposed peace agreement that would end weeks of fighting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russias-lavrov-says-neutrality-ukraine-being-seriously-discussed-2022-03-16\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. \u201cNeutral status is now being seriously discussed along, of course, with security [assurances],\u201d Russia\u2019s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said. The two sides are \u201cvery close to agreement\u201d on the \u201cspecific formulations\u201d of this arrangement, Lavrov said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The setup would see Ukraine mimic Austria, adopting a neutral status while maintaining<\/strong><strong> \u201cits own limited army,\u201d<\/strong> which Russia is considering a compromise on its part, Russian news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/ria.ru\/20220316\/ukraina-1778431722.html\">RIA Novosti<\/a> quoted Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the meantime, Ukraine is striking back against Russia\u2019s offensive<\/strong>, with its armed forces carrying out counteroffensive attacks in several operational areas, which \u201cradically changes the parties\u2019 dispositions,\u201d Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Podolyak_M\/status\/1504001010787921924?s=20&t=RX0PBHBJ8yjdD-FvnQ_4nw\">tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Around 20k Ukrainian civilians have escaped Mariupol in private cars<\/strong>, as Russian forces focus their efforts and resources on the city on the Azov Sea coast, which they need to control before continuing to move further west, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-says-20000-escape-besieged-mariupol-uk-says-russian-forces-struggling-2022-03-16\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. At least 200k citizens are still trapped in the city, many of whom are without basic necessities, heating, power, or water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More US assistance coming Ukraine\u2019s way:<\/strong> US President Joe Biden is set to announce an additional USD 800 mn in military aid to Ukraine today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/16\/russia-ukraine-war-news-zelensky-live-updates\/\">the Washington Post<\/a> reports, citing a senior White House official. The problem is that many of these crucial organisms are now coming under increasing threat of extinction due to human activity. Researchers have been sounding the alarm on this looming threat for years, with some estimates suggesting that nearly 40% of all insect populations are currently in decline and at risk of being completely wiped out over the coming decades, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0006320718313636\">one research paper<\/a>. Although this may sound like a dream come true for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medical\/entomophobia\">entomophobes<\/a>, the consequence of a world without insects would be catastrophic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insect populations are on the decline: <\/strong>Though insect populations have proven resilient to previous mass extinction events, researchers are finding that they may be way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/down-to-earth\/22958614\/insects-bees-butterflies-decline-extinction\">more vulnerable<\/a>than we previously thought. Some of the species in question from the 2019 study on global insect populations include moths, butterflies, bees, dung beetles among many others that help decompose organic matter. \u201cIn 10 years you will have a quarter less, in 50 years only half left and in 100 years you will have none,\u201d one of the researchers behind the study told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/feb\/10\/plummeting-insect-numbers-threaten-collapse-of-nature\">the Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it's been a long time in the making:<\/strong> Backing up this claim of rapidly falling populations is <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0185809\">a 2017 study<\/a>that had suggested the abundance of insects had dropped by more than 75% within 63 protected areas in Germany over the course of 27 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/115\/44\/E10397\">A separate 2016 study<\/a> had also detailed similar declines in Puerto Rican rainforests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wide-ranging losses of this sort will most definitely will bite us in the [redacted]:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Insects are pollinators, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/27\/magazine\/insect-apocalypse.html\">decomposers<\/a>, predators and prey that are a fundamental building block of our ecosystems. But even if we were to think a little selfishly for a moment, they\u2019re the backbone of our agricultural systems. Nearly three quarters of all flowering plants on the planet require insect pollination and so do the crops that produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/wps\/portal\/nrcs\/main\/national\/plantsanimals\/pollinate\/\">over one third of the world\u2019s food supply<\/a>. In short, insect extinction is a global food security issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what\u2019s responsible for all this?<\/strong> Habitat loss, pesticides used in farming, climate change, and the weather extremes climate change causes are all to blame. By far the biggest causes identified, however, are the aggressive use of pesticides in farming \u2014 neonicotinoids and fipronil in particular \u2014 and the loss of natural habitats to human encroachment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Egypt, we\u2019ve been witnessing this trend firsthand through declining honey bee populations:<\/strong> Between 1990 and 2016 Egypt lost about half of its honey bee colonies, according <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/3\/Beekeeping-and-the-Need-for-Pollination-from-an-Agricultural-Perspective-in-Egypt.pdf\">to one study (pdf)<\/a> that also cited habitat loss, pesticide use and global warming to be the main drivers of this decline. In 2016, at the time when the study was being conducted, the country had already witnessed a 40% shortfall in honey production compared to 1987 levels.
