The city, close to Russian-annexed Crimea, is now \u201ccompletely surrounded\u201d by Russian troops, its mayor Igor Kolykhayev said, downplaying Russia\u2019s claim of full control, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ukraine-russia-war-latest-news-putin-nuclear-deterrent-invasion-belarus-live-updates-12541713\">Sky News<\/a>. Kherson would be the largest city Russia has successfully captured in Ukraine, as they continue to struggle to capture the capital, Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He said, she said<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Updated intelligence on the invasion from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceHQ\/status\/1498920532485582850?cxt=HHwWhMC91YuSns0pAAAA\">UK\u2019s defense ministry<\/a> said that, \u201cwhile Russian forces have reportedly moved into the center of Kherson in the south, overall gains across axes have been limited in the last 24 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ukraine has reportedly thwarted an assassination attempt against President Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>, the chief of the country\u2019s National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov said, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/spravdi\/1058\">Telegram post<\/a> by Ukraine\u2019s state-run Centre for Strategic Communication. The plot was carried out by a unit of Chechen special forces, known as Kadyrovites, who have since been \u201celiminated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kharkiv\u2019s casualties are rising<\/strong>, with at least four killed and nine injured in missile attacks that hit the center of the country\u2019s second-largest city since the morning, the mayor of Kharkiv said, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ukraine-russia-war-latest-news-putin-nuclear-deterrent-invasion-belarus-live-updates-12541713\">Sky News<\/a> reported. This adds up to a previous death toll of at least 21 people killed and 112 injured due to the strikes in the past 24 hours, regional governor Oleg Synegubov said earlier today, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/least-21-killed-112-wounded-shelling-kharkiv-ukrainian-official-2022-03-02\/\">Reuters<\/a>. At least four people have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/four-dead-russian-strike-ukrainian-city-zhytomyr-adviser-interior-minister-2022-03-01\/\">been killed<\/a> on Tuesday in a strike in Zhytomyr, west of the capital, with five killed after Russian forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/ukraine-says-five-people-killed-russian-attack-kyiv-tv-tower-2022-03-01\/\">struck a TV<\/a> tower in Kyiv, while a missile attack was also launched on a police station in the capital, the Ukrainian <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceU\/status\/1498917644141006849?cxt=HHwWgsC46fvpnM0pAAAA\">defense ministry<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The attack this morning came hours after Russian paratroopers stormed a military hospital<\/strong> in the city as they near the Ukrainian capital with a military convoy around 20 miles northwest of Kyiv. No Ukrainian forces were killed in the fighting overnight, according to the city\u2019s regional police chief, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ukraine-russia-war-latest-news-putin-nuclear-deterrent-invasion-belarus-live-updates-12541713\">Sky News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall death toll:<\/strong> Over 2k Ukrainians have been killed since the beginning of the Russian aggression, with hundreds of transport facilities, residential buildings, hospitals and kindergartens destroyed, Ukraine\u2019s emergency service said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MNS.GOV.UA\">statement<\/a> on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine said that 5.8k Russian troops have been killed since the beginning of the invasion, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GeneralStaff.ua\/posts\/262898602689892\">Ukraine\u2019s General Staff of Armed forces<\/a>. Earlier, the Ukrainian president said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChristopherJM\/status\/1498955618799046658\">video address<\/a> that the number was close to 6k. Russia continues to remain tight-lipped on its casualties since the invasion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As the invasion wears on, Zelensky <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChristopherJM\/status\/1498955618799046658\">wants the West to do more<\/a><\/strong><strong> to help Ukraine<\/strong>, including supporting his country\u2019s bid to join the EU and imposing harsher punitive measures on Russia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There may, in fact, be more sanctions coming:<\/strong> UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed with Zelensky in a call earlier today that more sanctions are needed, with Johnson saying that the UK will \u201crally UN General Assembly members \u2026 to ensure the strongest possible condemnation of Russia,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/pm-call-with-president-zelenskyy-2-march-2022\">press release<\/a> by Downing Street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But a second round of talks may be underway<\/strong>, despite the ongoing Russian aggression, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov telling reporters on Wednesday \u201cin the second half of the day, closer to evening, our delegation will be in place to await Ukrainian negotiators,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-live-updates-9c70fb215d15e0b054b5b2d40169f940\">Associated Press<\/a> reported. Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said officials are ready for new talks, yet his country wouldn\u2019t accept any Russian demands. The venue of the talks, which come days after the first round of talks held along the Belarusian border <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/59cf5a97-295b-49c7-90d4-23c7823fa837\">failed<\/a> to reach a breakthrough, remains undetermined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UN General Assembly is meeting today to vote on a draft resolution rebuking Russia over the invasion<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/un-general-assembly-set-censure-russia-over-ukraine-invasion-2022-03-02\/\">Reuters<\/a> reported, as nearly half of the 193-member assembly signed as co-sponsors of the draft, which demands Russia fully withdraws military forces from Ukraine. Today\u2019s draft resolution is similar to one that was vetoed by Moscow in the Security Council on Friday, but veto powers do not exist in the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Belarus is getting dragged into the sanctions corner, too:<\/strong> EU diplomats have approved fresh sanctions against Belarus over its support of the Russian invasion, the French Presidency of the EU Council <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Europe2022FR\/status\/1498960513589559297?cxt=HHwWgoC-jaapsM0pAAAA\">announced<\/a>. The sanctions include Belarusian officials and military involved in the aggression, and \u201ccertain sectors of the Belarusian economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The corporate exodus from Russia shows no signs of abating<\/strong>, with yet more companies exiting the country or suspending operations, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/apple-says-it-halted-all-product-sales-russia-2022-03-01\/\">Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/inside-google\/company-announcements\/helping-ukraine\/\">Google<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/media.ford.com\/content\/fordmedia\/fna\/us\/en\/news\/2022\/03\/01\/ford-russia-ukraine-statement.html\">Ford<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/wrapup-apple-ford-other-big-american-brands-join-corporate-wave-shunning-russia-2022-03-02\/\">Harley-Davidson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.exxonmobil.com\/News\/Newsroom\/News-releases\/2022\/0301_ExxonMobil-to-discontinue-operations-at-Sakhalin-1_make-no-new-investments-in-Russia\">Exxon Mobil<\/a> over the invasion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/wrapup-apple-ford-other-big-american-brands-join-corporate-wave-shunning-russia-2022-03-02\/\">Reuters<\/a> reported, piling further economic misery for Moscow amid imposed sanctions by the West. Boeing and Airbus are also joining the chorus, bringing a halt to technical support for Russian planes, they said in emailed statements to the media. Japanese automobile maker Honda Motor is also planning a boycott, temporarily suspending exports of its cars and motorbikes to Russia due to the weight of economic sanctions against Moscow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20220302_31\/\">broadcaster NHK<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italian oil giant Eni is also joining in moves of <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b4bf98c5-d0be-4ae8-9d34-0a935bf30f00\">peers<\/a><\/strong><strong> for isolation of Russia<\/strong>, it told<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-italy-eni\/italys-eni-to-sell-stake-in-blue-stream-pipeline-co-owned-with-gazprom-idUSKBN2KY5H0\">Reuters<\/a> in emailed comments, saying it will exit the Blue Stream pipeline that connects Russia to Turkey by selling its 50% stake in the joint venture it co-owned with Russia\u2019s Gazprom since 1999.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the humanitarian front<\/strong>, the European Commission proposed granting temporary protection of up to three years to those fleeing Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/eu-commission-proposes-temporary-residence-rights-ukraine-refugees-2022-03-02\/\">Reuters<\/a>reported. The protection provides a residence permit, jobs access, social welfare and medical treatment for 1-3 years in all EU states. The European Commission is set to unveil a plan to reduce reliance on Russian energy imports next week, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2309904-europe-rethinks-its-energy-strategy-after-russias-attack-on-ukraine\/\">New Scientist<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The supply switch could take years to enact \u2014 but Europe is also preparing to replace Russian gas fast if need be. <\/strong>The EU is drawing up contingencies for a supply-shock scenario where Russia turns off the gas taps to Europe in retaliation for Western sanctions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-28\/eu-braces-for-possible-russian-retaliation-on-gas?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. EU energy ministers earlier this week held an emergency meeting to discuss their energy plan-B if Russian gas drops off the menu, though Russia has made no signs as of yet that it is seriously considering that option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Europe would have to cut demand by at least 10-15% if Russia decides to suspend imports altogether<\/strong> \u2014 but if the country fulfills its long-term contracts with the EU, \u201cdepleted storage could easily be replenished before the next heating season,\u201d Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-28\/eu-could-survive-without-russian-gas-next-winter-study-says#:~:text=The%20European%20Union%20is%20capable,Belgium%2Dbased%20think%20tank%20Bruegel.\">reports<\/a>, citing a study by Belgium-based think tank Bruegel. That said, making the switch to alternative suppliers won\u2019t come without a cost, which could run as high as EUR 70 bn \u2014 seven times more than in previous years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For now, Russian supply continues to flow \u2014 but try telling that to the markets. <\/strong>While Western sanctions have so far <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/russia-sanctions-over-ukraine-largely-spare-energy-sector-vital-to-europe-11645970890\">spared the vital energy sector<\/a>, uncertainty over the war has sent the price of basic commodities soaring, and oil is no exception. Buyers are reportedly shunning Russian oil altogether, with tenders failing to attract any bids even when offered with deep price reductions, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-02\/R83VQCT0AFBA01?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Brent crude is currently trading at USD 111.88 per barrel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US is stepping in to try and calm prices:<\/strong> Members of the International Energy Agency will deploy 60 mn barrels of emergency oil stockpiles in a bid to bring prices back down to earth. The US will contribute half the amount from its strategic reserve, President Joe Biden confirmed in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/03\/01\/remarks-of-president-joe-biden-state-of-the-union-address-as-delivered\/\">State of the Union<\/a> address last night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But don\u2019t expect OPEC+ to do much: <\/strong>The cartel is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-01\/opec-expected-to-agree-another-modest-supply-boost-amid-turmoil?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">expected<\/a> to offer another round of gradual supply increases at its meeting today, as members are already struggling to meet production targets as they currently stand. (Plus: Russia is OPEC\u2019s second largest member and will presumably be more than happy to watch its Western foes sweat.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead, the loss of Russian supply could imperil green targets:<\/strong> Germany is mulling extending use of coal to replace Russian gas, said Robert Habeck, vice chancellor and minister for economy and energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-28\/germany-mulls-extending-coal-phaseout-to-wean-off-russian-gas?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Coal plants in the country \u2014 which gets more than half of its gas from Russia \u2014 could run beyond 2030, when Germany had targeted to phase out the fossil fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EU leadership has insisted that the best path forward would be to accelerate the use of renewables<\/strong> \u2014 and the plan set to be unveiled next week will reportedly include a target to reduce fossil fuel use by 40% come 2030, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2022\/02\/23\/russia-ukraine-eu-nordstream-strategy-energy\/\">Washington Pos<\/a>t. But while Habeck said transitioning to clean energy remains the ultimate goal, his first priority is to release Germany of dependency on Russian supply.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Algeria has apparently thrown its hat into the ring as an alternative supplier: <\/strong>A Spanish government minister has said the North African nation is ready to step up exports to Europe if supplies from Moscow are disrupted, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-01\/spain-says-algeria-s-ready-to-send-more-gas-to-europe\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports \u2014 while pointing out that the OPEC member\u2019s exports have stalled in recent years, and that current capacity is already tied up in long-term contracts with European buyers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about us? <\/strong>Egypt last week <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9116ce66-29a8-46af-a031-9619f15bfa0f\">held talks<\/a> with the EU over shipping more natural gas to Europe as worries ratcheted up over Ukraine, though we\u2019ve had no word so far on the outcome. Egyptian officials have repeatedly signaled their desire to ramp up gas exports to the continent as a key part of ambitions to become a Mediterranean gas hub. Boosting exports would be good for us, good for the EU, and good for East Mediterranean countries.
