At least 10 people were killed and 35 were injured in separate rocket strikes on the country\u2019s largest second city, Kharkiv, Ukraine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1161738764653771\">Interior Ministry said<\/a>. The assault on Kharkiv came as earlier talks along the Berlarusian border between Russia and Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/59cf5a97-295b-49c7-90d4-23c7823fa837\">failed<\/a> to broker a ceasefire, with more talks set to be held in the coming days at an unspecified time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moscow still has its eyes on Kyiv<\/strong>, with an armored column bearing down on the Ukrainian capital after the deadly bombing on Kharkiv, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russian-isolation-intensifies-ukraine-fighting-rages-2022-03-01\/\">Reuters<\/a> reported. This comes hours after <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ukraine-invasion-satellite-images-show-40-mile-long-convoy-of-russian-military-vehicles-closing-in-on-kyiv-12554512\">satellite images<\/a> showed a mass military convoy north of the Ukrainian capital stretching for 65km (40 miles), US satellite company Maxar said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia shows no signs of pulling back<\/strong>, stressing that the armed forces will continue their \u201cmilitary operation\u201d in Ukraine until their goals are met, <a href=\"https:\/\/interfax.com\/newsroom\/top-stories\/74886\/?sphrase_id=69509\">Interfax<\/a> reported Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu as saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian forces have yet to successfully capture any major city in Ukraine, but can be expected to regroup and launch a better-planned offensive<\/strong> over the next 24-72 hours, the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/ukraine-conflict-update-11\">latest report<\/a> on the conflict. \u201cThe Ukrainian military likely cannot prevent Russian forces from enveloping or encircling Kyiv if the Russians send enough combat power, but likely can make Russian efforts to gain control of the city itself extremely costly and possibly unsuccessful,\u201d ISW says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Death toll:<\/strong> Ukraine said that 5,710 Russian troops have been killed since the beginning of the invasion, according to Ukraine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GeneralStaff.ua\/posts\/262011719445247\">General Staff of the Armed Forces<\/a>. Ukraine has reportedly also captured 200 Russian prisoners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More casualties among civilians:<\/strong> An estimated 136 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the war broke, including 13 children. Around 400 civilians have been injured, including 26 children, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights spokesperson Liz Throssell told a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/Media.aspx?IsMediaPage=true\">briefing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the diplomatic front, the International Criminal Court said it will <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60567162\">launch<\/a><\/strong><strong> its own investigation<\/strong>, as there is \u201creasonable basis\u201d to believe that war crimes have been committed against Ukraine during the Russian invasion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here at home, G7 ambassadors in Cairo voiced their support for Ukraine, <\/strong>and condemned the invasion, the ambassadors said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/3\/G7-op-ed-Cairo.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a> today. The group is lobbying Egypt to side with Ukraine in the next emergency session by the UN General Assembly set for this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, Social media giants are blocking Russian media outlets in the EU: <\/strong>Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok have all taken steps to remove content from Russian state media outlets such as RT and Sputnik from their platforms in the EU, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-instagram-youtube-tiktok-block-russian-state-media-in-eu-2022-3\">Business Insider<\/a>. This is the latest in a series of moves by large tech companies to limit Russia\u2019s influence through their platforms, with both <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ngleicher\/status\/1497417241947607043\">Meta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7b5dd099-c730-4020-b3f8-255161e7db89\">Google<\/a> announcing last weekend that Russian media would not be able to place ads or monetize content on their sites. Meta\u2019s president of global policy, Nick Clegg, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nickclegg\/status\/1498395147536527360\">said on Twitter<\/a> that more governments have also requested a ban on Russian state media. Twitter itself, however, has not yet announced if it will follow suit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia could retaliate with punitive measures on Meta and Google <\/strong>after the two companies failed to open local offices and take other measures required by a communications law, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/google-meta-face-penalties-russia-deadline-passes-open-local-offices-2022-03-01\/\">Reuters<\/a>. Russian legislation forces foreign social media companies with more than 500k daily users to open local offices or face measures such as fines or an outright ban. State communications regulator Roskomnadzor listed 13 companies it wanted to adhere to this decision and said it would start imposing restrictions by the end of February. However, Apple and Spotify are the only two companies to comply with the deadline, while Google, Meta, Twitter, TikTok, and Zoom aren\u2019t fully compliant, which Russia could use as grounds for a retaliatory measure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY AT HOME TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>GB <\/strong><strong>Auto is mulling selling down a portion of its stake in Netherlands-based MNT<\/strong><strong> Investments<\/strong>, which is majority-owned by GB Auto\u2019s subsidiary GB Capital, the company announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/3\/GB-Auto-MNT-Investment.pdf\">regulatory filing (pdf)<\/a>. The statement did not specify the number of shares GB Capital is selling from its stake, but said that the decision to look into the sale came after other MNT Investment shareholders expressed interest in selling a portion of their stakes. The study predicts that climate change will make it difficult for nearly all prior host cities for the Olympics to hold outdoor winter sports competitions. The optimal weather conditions for the Winter Olympics would see temperatures between \u221210\u00b0C and \u22121\u00b0C, days with more than 10cm of natural snow, and less than 1 mm of rain. These conditions ensure that the snow sport competitions are safe for the athletes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The impending problem already began to make itself known at this year\u2019s Beijing Winter<\/strong><strong> Olympics<\/strong>, with China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/06\/mounting-concern-over-environmental-cost-of-fake-snow-for-olympics\">using fake snow<\/a> to cover almost 100% of its needs. I started my career as a transactions and advisory team intern at PwC before exploring the banking sector as an equity trader. I then became a private equity analyst at Catalyst Partners Egypt, where I discovered my passion for investing. Following my tenure at Catalyst, I joined Zilla Capital, where I\u2019ve been happily working for the past two years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For me, investment banking is truly fulfilling.<\/strong> It\u2019s a dynamic and intellectually stimulating sector, where I\u2019m constantly exposed to new industries that pose interesting challenges. I also love the interaction with management teams from different companies. I get to meet people from all walks of life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t get me wrong, the job comes with challenges that require you to think outside of the box.<\/strong> Understanding firms\u2019 value propositions and how to differentiate each company from its competitors, and the specific financial and legal constraints that come with each potential investment is no walk in the park. But the challenges make me enjoy investment all the more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The worst part of the job is pulling all-nighters, and personally investing in a transaction for a long time and then just having it fall apart through no fault of your own.<\/strong> There\u2019s a lot of stress from managing various stakeholders, as well as having to work under the pressure of tight deadlines. You have to be persistent and adaptable to cope with the requirements of this job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I personally believe that 2022 will be a good year for investment in Egypt. <\/strong>I believe the trend in investment banking will be robust M&A activity, building on what we saw last year. I also think the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/afternoons\/enterprisepm-state-privatization-program-back\/\">state privatization program<\/a> will be crucial in increasing liquidity and reviving trading volumes, thereby attracting more institutional and foreign investors to the Egyptian market. Of course, investor hesitancy is surging amid the war in Ukraine, but Egypt continues to outperform other emerging markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sectors that I think are gems with a lot of potential are F&B, FMCG, healthcare, and education. <\/strong>We\u2019re noticing a lot of interest from investors to tap into these underserved markets. Consumption is increasing, and the macro indicators are improving, so there\u2019s great potential for growth when it comes to the consumer sector. Tech is also part of the outlook for sure: E-commerce, fintech, and similar sectors proved their resilience during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My first step before I decide on an investment is to assess the management team of the target company.<\/strong> Then I look at its financial indicators and potential for growth. Finally, I thoroughly study the company\u2019s structure: How can it onboard investors and does it have a clear exit strategy? If those all line up, I can confidently recommend the investment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My theory of investment is having a balance between risk and reward. <\/strong>That doesn\u2019t mean that I\u2019m on the conservative side, per se. When you invest in a company, you\u2019re creating value, and when you exit eventually, you\u2019re going to IPO based on the value you create. So it\u2019 s only logical that the return should be proportionate to the risk profile you accommodate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The last great thing I watched was <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbo.com\/succession\">Succession<\/a><\/strong><strong> on OSN.<\/strong> The show brilliantly portrays conflicts and power struggles within this unorthodox family of media moguls. Aside from the great acting and sublime soundtrack, the show also captivated me because it partly focuses on M&A and investments in general [laughs]. One of the best series I\u2019ve watched in a while. [EDITOR\u2019S NOTE: We concur, and we definitely don\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/240b1e6f-e614-4796-9d3b-13335f8b49a0\">bang on about Succession<\/a> whenever we get the chance.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m currently reading <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Icarus-Life-Death-Abraaj-Group\/dp\/1785907182\">Icarus: The Life and Death of The Abraaj Group<\/a><\/strong> by Brian Brivati. Based on interviews with key personnel, the book explores what the Abraaj Group was trying to do through impact investing, how it was portrayed by the media, and how it ultimately fell apart. A very interesting read.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In my downtime I enjoy playing padel tennis and football.<\/strong> I\u2019m also passionate about cars, so naturally I follow Formula One. To disconnect from work, I go out and travel with my friends whenever I get the chance.
