But first, on the home front\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>Uber subsidiary Careem is investing an undisclosed amount into Egyptian homegrown<\/strong><strong> food ordering platform Elmenus<\/strong>, the Dubai-based company said in a statement cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-28\/uber-s-careem-is-latest-investor-in-egyptian-food-delivery-scene?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>. The investment will \u201cextend our reach in one of our largest ride-hailing markets,\u201d Careem co-founder and CEO Mudassir Sheikha reportedly wrote in the statement, adding that the move also helps it take a further step towards launching its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cc287a71-28fb-4b51-89b2-3c13cd8090a2\">super app<\/a> across the region. The service is currently available in cities across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Pakistan and Qatar. Ukraine went in with the aim of reaching an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian forces from the country, Ukraine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mvs.gov.ua\/posts\/320979820057674\">interior ministry said<\/a>, while the Kremlin has been more tight-lipped on what it\u2019s angling for in the talks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not very conducive to a ceasefire:<\/strong> Russia\u2019s defense ministry has placed its nuclear missile forces, its Northern and Pacific fleets, and long-range aviation on \u201cenhanced combat duty\u201d today, following Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s orders yesterday to put the country\u2019s nuclear forces on high alert, according to Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/interfax.com\/newsroom\/top-stories\/74752\/\">Interfax<\/a> news agency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are also reports of \u201cstrong shelling\u201d in Kharkiv, Ukraine\u2019s second-largest city, as the ceasefire talks are ongoing<\/strong>, Ukraine\u2019s interior ministry said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/ukraine-invasion-russian-advance-meets-073700369.html\">Sky News<\/a>. Ukrainian forces have so far repelled Russia\u2019s attempts to take over the capital city of Kyiv and Kharkiv.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The talks began after Russian forces took over two small cities Berdyansk and Enerhodar<\/strong> in southeastern Ukraine and the <a href=\"https:\/\/interfax.com\/newsroom\/top-stories\/74697\/\">Zaporizhzhya region<\/a> and the area surrounding its nuclear power plant, <a href=\"https:\/\/interfax.com\/newsroom\/top-stories\/74698\/\">Interfax<\/a> reported. Operations at the plant are continuing normally, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/interfax.com\/newsroom\/top-stories\/74697\/\">Interfax<\/a>, which reported Ukraine refuting that Russia has seized the plant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More sanctions from the UK:<\/strong> Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is due to make a statement to the UK House of Commons on further sanctions against Russia at 5:30pm CLT, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ukraine-russia-war-latest-news-putin-nuclear-deterrent-invasion-belarus-live-updates-12541713?postid=3441886#liveblog-body\">Sky News<\/a> reports. A statement on corporate transparency and economic crime measures will also be made by Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng. Among the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/ukraine-russia-war-latest-news-putin-nuclear-deterrent-invasion-belarus-live-updates-12541713?postid=3440039#liveblog-body\">fresh sanctions<\/a> London is slapping on Moscow: Banning any UK entities from doing business with the Russian central bank, finance ministry and wealth fund. Russian financial institutions and companies will be barred from issuing transferable securities and money market instruments in the UK per the new sanctions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia clapped back with its own measures<\/strong>, blocking off its airspace from airlines from 36 countries, including Britain, Germany, Spain, Italy and Canada in response to sanctions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/russia-imposes-sweeping-flight-bans-airlines-36-countries-2022-02-28\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, on the economic front: The Bank of Russia hiked its interest rates to their highest since 2003 <\/strong>as it looks to contain the economic fallout from the invasion in Ukraine and ensuing <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7b5dd099-c730-4020-b3f8-255161e7db89\">Western sanctions<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.ru\/eng\/press\/keypr\/\">a statement<\/a>. The bank raised key interest rates to 20% from 9.5%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Russian central bank <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.ru\/eng\/press\/pr\/?file=28022022_073700ENG_PP28022022_113149.htm\">also imposed<\/a><\/strong><strong> some controls on capital flow<\/strong>, including temporarily barring brokers from selling orders of securities held by foreigners on the exchange. It also imposed mandatory hard-currency revenue sales for exporters. The emergency move comes after the US and the European Union approved penalizing Moscow through shutting off around USD 640 bn in international reserves of the Russian central bank and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7b5dd099-c730-4020-b3f8-255161e7db89\">cutting off<\/a> some Russian banks from the SWIFT global payment system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Russian-Ukrainian war has led the RUB to plunge to a record low, falling nearly 30% against the USD<\/strong> in offshore trading today. The currency dropped to almost 118 against the USD, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/USDRUB:CUR?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg data<\/a>. The RUB had already suffered heavily last week, sliding to lows after the invasion and tough US and EU sanctions. The central bank called off this morning\u2019s FX, money market, and repo trading session at the Moscow Exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the energy front, European natural gas futures jumped around 36%<\/strong> amid worries that the imposed sanctions could lead to energy shortages, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/onweb\/european-gas-jumps-as-sanctions-spur-energy-shortage-concerns#:~:text=(Bloomberg)%20%2D%2D%20European%20natural%20gas,fueled%20concerned%20about%20energy%20shortages.\">Bloomberg<\/a>reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O<\/strong><strong>n the humanitarian front<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Some 500k people have fled Ukraine since the invasion began last week, the UN refugee agency UNHCR head Filippo Grandi <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FilippoGrandi\/status\/1498247150953799680?cxt=HHwWgIC9pZD268opAAAA\">announced<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ukrainians fleeing the war may be granted by the EU the right to stay for up to three years<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/eu-plans-grant-ukrainians-right-stay-up-3-years-2022-02-28\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing senior EU and French officials. The move would provide protection similar to one provided under the EU temporary protection directive, which has never been used so far. The protection directive provides a residence permit, jobs access, social welfare and medical treatment for 1-3 years in all EU states. EU ministers will meet on Thursday to agree on the details related to the protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Airbnb also wants in<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.airbnb.com\/help-ukraine\/\">offering to provide<\/a> temporary housing for up to 100k Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war to neighboring states at no charge. For me, there\u2019s no point in replicating traditional office looks within this new space. With these new communication tools, we can level up our business identity expression too,\u201d Croatian fashion designer Gala Marija Vrbanic <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/work\/2123836\/how-virtual-fashion-can-shake-up-the-remote-work-dress-code\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">tells Quartz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Already, we\u2019re seeing digital-only fashion brands:<\/strong> There are about 100 digital fashion brands already up and running on virtual fashion boutique <a href=\"https:\/\/dressx.com\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">DressX<\/a> and the British Fashion Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishfashioncouncil.co.uk\/bfcnews\/4599\/British-Fashion-Council-Launched-The-Fashion-Awards-Experience-on-Roblox-and-the-First-Ever-Fashion-Award-for-Metaverse-Design\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">last year announced<\/a> the first ever Fashion Award for Metaverse Design as a category of its 2021 Fashion Awards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this mean for the future of retail? <\/strong>In the future, virtual retail could make it possible for retailers to build one global hub in the metaverse serving mns of customers rather than a shop in every city, predicts the report. Launching goods in the metaverse before launching real-world products allows retailers to reduce costs, but also creates products for digital avatars, in some cases launching both as more customers look to \u201cdigital twinning\u201d (matching their avatars to their real-world personas or vice versa). It also allows brands to find different ways to express themselves and for more people to access high fashion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s even <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-us\/2021\/04\/10430494\/digital-fashion-environment-meaning\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">the claim<\/a><\/strong><strong> that digital clothing could be a more <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brookerobertsislam\/2020\/08\/21\/how-digital-fashion-could-replace-fast-fashion-and-the-startup-paving-the-way\/?sh=e149b5470d81\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">sustainable<\/a><\/strong><strong> alternative for designers<\/strong>, giving people greater access to tons of new cutting edge garments from fashion houses around the world, at practically no ecological cost. But these pronouncements don\u2019t seem to hold much water mainly because \u201cvirtual clothes cannot be slotted into our closets as functional substitutes,\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-us\/2021\/04\/10430494\/digital-fashion-environment-meaning\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">Vox notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plenty of clothing brands are already piling into the digital fashion space: <\/strong>Companies like fast fashion chain Forever21 and Nike are betting big on digital retail, creating multi-storey virtual world stores that you can visit with your avatar to buy digital clothing with virtual currency, with gaming platform Roblox acting as a host to many of these stores, reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ed66a2a0-dfe6-41e9-9d09-64b71acc5e50\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">Financial Times<\/a>. Retailers are hoping to get ahead in what JPMorgan estimates is a USD tns industry, with a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpmorgan.com\/content\/dam\/jpm\/treasury-services\/documents\/opportunities-in-the-metaverse.pdf\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">report<\/a> by the investment bank finding that USD 54 bn worth of virtual goods are sold every year \u2014 more than double what is spent on music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BUT- Consumers don\u2019t appear to be all that keen on the metaverse: <\/strong>Despite the hype circulating around what has been touted as the next logical phase of our online universe, it seems that people aren\u2019t too excited about the metaverse just yet. In<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forrester.com\/blogs\/consumers-arent-ready-for-the-metaverse-yet\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">a 2021 Forrester survey<\/a>of over 1k adults only 23% of respondents in the US said that they would \u201clike to spend some time exploring the metaverse,\u201d that figure was down to only 17% in the UK.
