And another reminder of the potential for covid to interrupt business-as-usual landed just a few hours before dispatch time when the Jordanian prime minister tested positive for the virus following today\u2019s Egyptian-Jordanian Joint Higher Committee meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a><strong> EFG Hermes greenlights FAB due diligence + appoints Goldman Sachs to <\/strong><strong>advise on acquisition bid:<\/strong> EFG Hermes has appointed US investment bank Goldman Sachs to advise it on First Abu Dhabi Bank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8d68b5eb-a11f-4c88-b404-0e64bb3de85d\">bid to purchase a minimum 51% stake<\/a>, it <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/2\/BoD-Summary-of-resolutions-Re-FAB-NBO-20-February-2022-FINAL.pdf\">announced (pdf)<\/a> this morning. Per the disclosure, the board has also given the Emirati lender the green light to conduct due diligence ahead of a potential acquisition that values EFG at around EGP 18.5 bn. White & Case was also named as EFG\u2019s legal advisor on the transaction.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>The <\/strong><strong>Egyptian-Jorda<\/strong><strong>nian Joint Higher Committee meeting didn\u2019t go quite <\/strong><strong>according to plan: <\/strong>Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Al Khasawneh has tested positive for covid-19 during his visit to Egypt to co-head today\u2019s Egyptian-Jordanian Joint Higher Committee meeting alongside PM Moustafa Madbouly. The announcement was made by Jordan\u2019s information minister several hours ago, who said in a statement picked up by the country\u2019s state news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petra.gov.jo\/Include\/InnerPage.jsp?ID=204622&lang=ar&name=news\">Petra<\/a> that the prime minister had tested positive following the meeting during which several bilateral agreements were signed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So far, no spread:<\/strong> The Egyptian delegation all tested negative following the meeting, Madbouly said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/343469247823502?_rdc=1&_rdr\">a statement<\/a> following the meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meeting with El Sisi canceled:<\/strong> Al Khasawneh was due to meet with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for talks during his visit but the meeting has now been canceled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>US climate envoy John Kerry is also wrapping up his visit to Egypt today<\/strong> during which he held talks with Foreign Minister and COP27 President Sameh Shoukry. The two sides have agreed to set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MfaEgypt\/status\/1495647292392620034?s=20&t=cnpC81WNh28FJLPGH4AX5w\">joint working group<\/a> to coordinate climate policies ahead of this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a925d015-f57e-4886-9f6d-db7a15c76bd3\">COP27 summit<\/a> which will be held in Sharm El Sheikh in November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We\u2019ll have more on all of these stories in tomorrow\u2019s EnterpriseAM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>Another day, another Credit Suisse scandal: A whistleblower from the Swiss bank has leaked data on <\/strong><strong>more than 18k accounts <\/strong>that allegedly show its business ties to human rights abusers, narcotics traffickers, sanctioned businessmen, and people with questionable backgrounds. The accounts were opened from the 1940s to the 2010s, and they collectively held more than USD 10 bn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Credit Suisse denies any wrongdoing: <\/strong>Scrambling to contain the fallout, the bank said that around 90% of accounts in question have been closed, and that the reports are based on \u201cpartial, inaccurate or selective information taken out of context,\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.credit-suisse.com\/about-us-news\/en\/articles\/media-releases\/csg-statement-media-202202.html\">statement<\/a> released yesterday. Credit Suisse is already under pressure after it became the first-ever Swiss bank to answer criminal charges in an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8ebb74e3-e6ad-4263-8985-7b4c6b2bd344\">money-laundering trial<\/a>. 2022 is turning out to be one of the hardest years ever to run a business. Uncertainty remains at high, as labor shortages, surging inflation, latent pandemic disruption and increasing demands from employees for new benefits and flexible working arrangements are raising expenses and creating new complications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workforce challenges are creating new headaches for CEOs:<\/strong> \"They're struggling to find their way,\u201d especially when it comes to workforce challenges, said Ted Bililies, managing director at consulting firm AlixPartners. The so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c82ac664-db4b-4717-b16d-0d019f559691\">Great Resignation<\/a>\u201d has seen record numbers of people quit their jobs over the past year, and with 11 mn job vacancies the number of applicants remains low. This is forcing companies in some sectors to aggressively up their salaries to attract and retain talent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it\u2019s more trouble for smaller businesses<\/strong>, who neither have the resources to increase salaries or have customers endure their higher costs of doing business this year unlike bigger companies. They too have difficulties recruiting the right talent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trouble in doing business is not only limited to the workforce<\/strong>, as inflation and supply chain issues are leading to the higher cost of doing business. The annual change in costs for S&P 500 companies is at its highest in a decade at 13.4%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All of this has CEOs fearing the future:<\/strong> Almost three-quarters of CEOs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/ceos-worried-job-security-2022-6663d8a7-c42e-48a3-b4a8-ce6f88e7b13b.html\">told an AlixPartners survey<\/a> at the end of last year that they\u2019re worried about being left jobless due to the disruption.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a><strong> The EU\u2019s climate disclosure rules are facing more pushback from industry: <\/strong>The EU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/11054dab-4422-43de-886a-0b7c5620b27b\">controversial green taxonomy<\/a> is coming under fire from financial industry trade group ICMA, reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c7bf86b3-816b-4166-bccc-66d69c9e64f5?segmentID=cff00754-86fe-b4b8-2306-8a20b247dd2f\">Financial Times<\/a>. The ICMA released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmagroup.org\/assets\/documents\/Sustainable-finance\/Ensuring-the-Usability-of-the-EU-Taxonomy-and-Ensuring-the-Usability-of-the-EU-Taxonomy.pdf?vid=2\">a paper<\/a> questioning the taxonomy\u2019s usability, arguing that the alignment regulations require too many details from fund managers which would push up costs to the extent that smaller firms would not be able to comply. The group is also pushing for more country-focused standards that take into account local conditions as opposed to applying the European framework to assets all over the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The taxonomy is no stranger to backlash<\/strong>, having been the subject of global outcry for its designation of nuclear power and natural gas as \u201cgreen investments\u201d. The rules are currently under review and could become law by the summer unless a supermajority of EU countries or the bloc\u2019s parliament moves to block it.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <strong>Siri and Alexa have entered the group chat:<\/strong> Several of the world\u2019s biggest tech companies are teaming up to create a common language to allow the increasing number of smart home devices to better communicate and help users integrate tech made by different companies into their setup, writes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-apple-amazon-and-google-are-uniting-on-smart-home-tech-matter-explained-11645240134?mod=hp_lead_pos12\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>. Although BYOD started making headlines about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/09\/23\/technology\/workers-own-cellphones-and-ipads-find-a-role-at-the-office.html\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">a decade ago<\/a>, the concept has recently gained new momentum as work from home (WFH) policies upended many companies' ways of doing business \u2014 and the rigid safety protocols that undergird their operations \u2014 in favor of more flexible working arrangements. While the issue is certainly not yet settled, an ongoing debate in the world of IT and business strategy over the future of remote and hybrid work continues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proponents of BYOD emphasize the potential for productivity gains:<\/strong> Though there is little research into how personal devices affect workplace behaviors, advocates of BYOD anticipate improvements in productivity among employees who get to choose the technology that best suits their style of work as a huge draw for asking employees to provide their own work devices. \"By enabling employees to securely and easily access corporate data on their own device, productivity levels will naturally increase,\u201d Mark Coates, EMEA VP at Good Technology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/computing\/what-is-byod-and-why-is-it-important-1175088\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">told TechRadar<\/a> in 2020. Others believe that offering flexibility over the use of devices will improve staff motivation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Company-issued devices often aren\u2019t at the cutting edge:<\/strong> The rapid evolution of tech and the reportedly strong preference of employees towards the devices they use for work is making requirements to stick to standard-issue corporate devices \u201ca losing battle,\u201d Joe Donnici, VP of Core IT at Quintiles, writes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/2224692\/tech-debate---is-byod-better-than-company-issued-.html#debate1\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">Network World<\/a>. This is because regularly delivering top-tier equipment to staff may be difficult for most companies, he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But at the root of this movement is cost-cutting strategies for business: <\/strong>Companies that adopt BYOD policies might be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/2224692\/tech-debate---is-byod-better-than-company-issued-.html#debate1\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">cut out some of the huge costs<\/a> associated with hardware purchases and software licensing for company-issued devices. \u201cApart from productivity gains, Comprehensive BYOD can pay for itself in hard cost savings\u2014primarily in hardware, support, and telecommunications costs,\u201d Joseph Bradely, Cisco\u2019s VP of digital and IoT services, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cisco.com\/news\/new-analysis-comprehensive-byod-implementation-increases-productivity-decreases-costs\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">wrote in a blog post<\/a> in 2013. The tech giant estimated in 2016 that companies could on average save some USD 350 annually for every employee hired using their own device.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employees in rich countries seem to (generally) be on board: <\/strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/blogs\/research-matters\/2016\/05\/implementing-bring-your-own-device-byod-in-a-survey-organization.html\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">US Census Bureau Gallup survey<\/a> from 2015 found that 72% of smartphone and tablet owners in the US would be willing to use their devices to send work-related emails and many were open to using personal devices for other work-related tasks as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But this figure falls dramatically when the question is framed differently:<\/strong> Less than a quarter of respondents were positive about companies using their devices to collect data when it was framed as a cost-cutting measure for businesses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The question of security is crucial: <\/strong>Protecting sensitive corporate and personal data, ensuring legal compliance and maintaining support for a wider range of devices are among the many challenges the UK\u2019s National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) lists in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/collection\/device-security-guidance\/bring-your-own-device\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">its guidance on BYOD strategies<\/a>. Leaked data, malware and unsafe downloads have also been listed among the top concerns cyber security professionals associate with current BYOD arrangements. Some 22% of organizations polled in <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/2\/report-cybersecurity-insiders-2021-byod-security-report-en.pdf\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">a survey (pdf)<\/a> by cybersecurity firm Bitglass last year said that employees using personal devices had downloaded malware over the previous 12 months, and almost half said they were unable to monitor whether malware had been downloaded, a problem the report described as potentially \u201cfatal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>And personal privacy is a big concern too: <\/strong>Encroaching on personal privacy is also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.devicemagic.com\/blog\/bring-your-own-device\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">a concern<\/a> that might arise when employees begin to rely primarily on their personal devices for work, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/collection\/device-security-guidance\/bring-your-own-device\/action-3-understand-additional-costs-and-implications\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">the NCSC<\/a>. This is an especially difficult challenge to overcome when employees are plugged into private networks and have company-provided security software installed on their computers designed to protect critical business information. This was a common concern in the Gallup survey, where many respondents expressed unease at their employers being able to access personal content on their devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it actually cost-effective?<\/strong> When it comes to protecting important data it might actually cost more to provide IT support for a wider range of devices and operating systems, especially if the company is committing to shoulder the costs for hardware repairs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/collection\/device-security-guidance\/bring-your-own-device\/action-3-understand-additional-costs-and-implications\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">according to the NCSC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For some of us, BYOD is already here: <\/strong>If you think about how often you use your personal phone for work-related purposes, you already have a foot in the door of BYOD. Some 82% of companies polled in Bitglass\u2019 report permitted BYOD to \u201csome extent.\u201d Whether the concept will become more widely adopted by companies will depend largely on whether
