The factory had been taken offline when the cement industry was facing a severe supply glut, but <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9d280cef-6284-40c5-853b-a30bfae11f73\">production quotas<\/a> the government introduced last year factored into the group\u2019s decision to bring it back online, CEO Mohamed Saad El Din said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We\u2019ll have more<\/strong> on this and other stories in Sunday\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> on the top stories from today\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lots of <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b5c99baf-cefd-4b4a-86c1-61b8486ce0fc\">energy news<\/a><\/strong><strong> from Egyps:<\/strong> Apache Egypt expects to spend more than USD 3.5 bn in Egypt over the next five years, Vice President & General Manager David Chi said yesterday. Separately, Egypt will be receiving newly announced additional natural gas exports from Israel via a new route through Jordan, rather than the Arish-Ashkelon pipeline that Israel usually uses to ship gas to Egypt.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gov\u2019t still mulling wheat hedging:<\/strong> The government is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4d62e3f0-9d66-4bf5-8447-110e1540903c\">still studying<\/a> potentially hedging wheat, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said yesterday, confirming a statement from Supply Minister Ali El Moselhy <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bc922ba0-67ab-4050-9920-ee1ac7d63996\">earlier this week<\/a> that \u201cuncertainties\u201d in the global wheat market could require us to start hedging the commodity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We have more details on the CBE\u2019s new import rules:<\/strong> Imports of goods worth up to USD 5k (or the equivalent in any other foreign currency) will be exempt from the Central Bank of Egypt\u2019s decision requiring importers to get letters of credit (L\/Cs) for their purchases, the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/92c4a593-2425-41dd-8af3-42c1de9c3569\">Federation of Egyptian Banks said<\/a>. The decision will also exempt imports of certain goods, including meds, wheat, and tea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/g20.org\/events\/1st-finance-ministers-and-central-bank-governor-meeting\/\">G20 nations\u2019 finance ministers and central bank governors<\/a><\/strong><strong> are gathered<\/strong> for their first meeting of the year in Jakarta, which wraps up tomorrow. The meetings <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/g20org\/status\/1494250893667364864\">included<\/a> a discussion on tax transparency in Asia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is attending the two-day EU-AU summit which<\/strong><strong> kicked off in Belgium today. <\/strong>El Sisi met with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen earlier today on the sidelines of the summit to discuss cooperating with the EU on renewable energy and fighting terrorism and extremism, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/posts\/507244400764293\">Ittihadiya statement<\/a>. El Sisi is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/posts\/507297867425613\">also meeting<\/a> with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo to talk diplomatic relations and regional issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>UKRAINE WATCH-<\/strong> Russia and Ukraine are pointing fingers at each other on reported shelling in eastern Ukraine, with Kiev blaming Russia-backed separatists for the strikes, which damaged a kindergarten. The Kremlin, meanwhile, alleged that \u201cthe first strike came from the Ukrainian side.\u201d The story is on the front pages of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/02\/17\/world\/russia-ukraine-news#us-troops-arrive-in-poland-as-biden-seeks-to-reassure-nato-allies\">New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0f5d1ece-11af-4ada-a8b3-5d8d499be09a\">Financial Times<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-rebels-accuse-govt-forces-mortar-shelling-report-2022-02-17\/\">Reuters<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ukraine tensions factored into Turkey\u2019s central bank deciding to keep interest rates<\/strong><strong> on hold today<\/strong>, despite inflation spiraling. Facebook has been storing biometric identifiers such as a retina or iris scan, fingerprint, voiceprint, or record of hand or face geometry through the technology \u2014 a violation of the Texas Capture or Use of Biometric Identifier (CUBI) Act, Paxton said. But with increased uptake of crypto mining and trading comes increased scrutiny \u2014 not least on the environmental front.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crypto mining is super energy-intensive. <\/strong>It took a tiny amount of electricity to mine a single BTC when the cryptocurrency launched in 2009, meaning you could do it from home on your computer, essentially without charge. Now, mining one BTC takes the equivalent of nine years\u2019 worth of electricity spent for an average American household, or USD 12.5k, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/09\/03\/climate\/bitcoin-carbon-footprint-electricity.html\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">New York Times<\/a>. That\u2019s why today\u2019s crypto mining is only feasible on an industrial scale, in massive warehouses where hundreds of sophisticated, energy-guzzling computers work around the clock. Global mining for BTC (which accounts for 42.5% of all crypto by value) now consumes around 91 terawatt-hours (TWh) a year \u2014 accounting for almost 0.5% of worldwide electricity consumption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The energy needed to mine BTC has risen with its popularity: <\/strong>In a nutshell, computers mine BTC by racing to solve complex mathematical problems to validate BTC trades. They gain new BTC in return, in a model known as proof-of-work (PoW). But as more computers engage in mining, those mathematical problems become increasingly difficult to solve \u2014 and the computers become more and more powerful to compete. In this sense, BTC\u2019s sustainability problem is \u201cbaked in\u201d: It\u2019s fundamental to how BTC maintains scarcity and protects its value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Going green will be a key challenge for the industry as it looks to take crypto mainstream for payments. <\/strong>Take the case of Tesla: After briefly accepting BTC for transactions last year, Elon Musk was forced to backtrack on environmental concerns. He has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/musk-says-tesla-will-accept-bitcoins-when-miners-use-reasonable-clean-energy-2021-06-13\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">since said<\/a> that Tesla will only begin accepting BTC again once miners transition to cleaner energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why not power mining from renewables? <\/strong>We do, in part. Around 39% of all crypto mining is powered by renewables, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/2\/Cambridge-crypto-2021-study.pdf\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">2021 study (pdf)<\/a> by Cambridge University researchers, and efforts are being made to increase that. <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoclimate.org\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">The Crypto Climate Accord<\/a> (CCA), a private sector-led initiative inspired by the Paris Agreement, aims to eliminate carbon emissions from crypto and blockchain by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another option: scrap BTC-style <\/strong><strong>mining<\/strong><strong> altogether: <\/strong>BTC competitor Ethereum <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/developers\/docs\/consensus-mechanisms\/pos\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">is planning<\/a> to transition away from PoW mining by June of this year. Its new proof-of-stake (PoS) model works kind of like a lottery: Ethereum owners stake some of their currency for a chance to become validators, and their computers are then picked by the system at random to validate transactions. This will remove the competitive problem-solving element, eliminating the need for ever more powerful processors \u2014 and ultimately reducing electricity consumption for mining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/12\/08\/ethereum-is-slated-for-another-upgrade-this-week-heres-what-to-know.html#:~:text=In%202022%2C%20Ethereum%20plans%20to,intensive%20mining%20rigs%20used%20now.&text=Once%20implemented%2C%20Eth2%20aims%20to,more%20scalable%2C%20secure%20and%20sustainable.\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">by 99%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or, ramp up second layer transactions.<\/strong> Second layer platforms such as <a href=\"https:\/\/lightning.network\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">Lightning Network<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/raiden.network\/\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">Raiden<\/a> process payments on another level that is outside of but still connected to the blockchain, making them faster and more energy efficient. Transactions are then documented on the energy-intensive main network.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are some wackier ideas, too: <\/strong>El Salvador, which was the world\u2019s first country to adopt BTC as an official currency in September, has ambitions to build the world\u2019s first ecologically circular <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a7e2276b-a682-44ae-9a2a-5dda1d7befe8\" style=\"color: rgb(252, 118, 1);\">BTC City<\/a>, powered by a volcano.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!--
