Our almost-weekend reward: A healthy news cycle that\u2019s keeping us on our toes.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG STORY TODAY-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAB makes a play for EFG Hermes: <\/strong>The UAE\u2019s First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) has presented a non-binding offer to buy a majority stake in Egypt\u2019s largest investment bank, EFG Hermes, in a potential allcash acquisition, EFG said in a bourse <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/2\/Disclosure-FAB-offers-to-buy-EFG-Hermes.pdf\">disclosure (pdf)<\/a>. FAB is looking to acquire at least 51% of the leading financial services corporation in frontier emerging markets, preliminarily pricing EFG\u2019s shares at EGP 19.00 apiece \u2014 marking a 21% premium on EFG\u2019s closing price yesterday. FAB\u2019s offer gives EFG a market value of around EGP 18.5 bn, the ADX-listed bank said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/2\/FAB-disclosure-on-EFG-acquisiton-offer-ADX.pdf\">regulatory disclosure (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EFG\u2019s shares ended the day up 9.3%, closing at EGP 17.20.<\/strong> The investment bank\u2019s shares had hit an intraday high of EGP 18.80 following the news of FAB\u2019s acquisition offer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We\u2019ll have more on this story and others in tomorrow\u2019s edition of EnterpriseAM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NOW-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The House of Representatives is discussing amendments to the<\/strong><strong> law governing non-residential rent in a<\/strong><strong> plenary<\/strong><strong> session.<\/strong> The bill would, if passed, allow landlords to eventually evict government agencies, public and private companies, embassies, clubs, associations and other entities leasing properties under the old rent system. The proposed amendments would do away with a system that currently protects non-residential renters from paying open-market rates on properties. The House Housing Committee had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/64c7215d-8eaa-4ae7-95fb-9967426efe0d\">signed off<\/a> on the bill last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The remaining amendments to the Real Estate Registry Act are also on the agenda<\/strong> for the House general assembly. Macro raised EGP 1.3 bn in the IPO, which saw it sell 264.5 mn shares at EGP 4.85 apiece, valuing the company at around EGP 2.8 bn. The institutional offering \u2014 which was allocated 95% of the shares \u2014 was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/18e68f20-0bbf-4f69-afae-028e84e5bb77\">1.8x oversubscribed<\/a>, while the retail component saw stronger demand, closing on Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9ab7ae42-c6bb-432f-b092-99fe1ecf890a\">102x oversubscribed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inflation figures are due:<\/strong> The Central Bank of Egypt and state census bureau Capmas are set to release January inflation data tomorrow. Annual urban inflation rose to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e8bb1d8d-f765-4ef6-bccb-73f889b098b1\">5.9% in December<\/a> from 5.6% in November. While analysts we spoke with expect prices to continue rising, they don\u2019t see them going outside the central bank\u2019s target range of 7% (\u00b12%) by 4Q2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep an eye on the US, which will release its own CPI data just a few hours later.<\/strong> The data, which will be released at 3:30pm CLT (8:30am EET), is expected to show another jump in inflation figures last month, with the consumer price index expected to rise 7.3% in January after rising to a 40-year <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/310e24da-2b97-4c31-9d4b-2ffef0bce2aa\">record 7% in December<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>? Scientists are racing to develop a vaccine that could prove effective against all coronavirus strains, including SARS, MERS and covid, which, if the past 20 years are any indication, are likely here to stay. Some universal vaccines are targeting pieces of protein called epitopes in all coronaviruses or other structures on the sars group that don\u2019t mutate to prompt an immune response, rather than targeting the spike protein, like current covid vaccines do. This was following a year when the final installment of Daniel Craig\u2019s James Bond: No Time to Die was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-55761211#:~:text=The%20release%20of%20the%20next,hit%20screens%20in%20April%202020.\">postponed<\/a> three times and blockbusters like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/the-batman-movie-release-date-2021-trailer\">The Batman<\/a>, Black Widow and Eternals were <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/black-widow-west-side-story-eternals-release-date-delay-1234773491\/\">pushed back<\/a> to avoid bad box office runs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The blockbuster opening only goes to confirm that going out is \u201cin\u201d again. <\/strong>Just as pandemic-induced lockdowns have increased our dependence on technology, they have also driven more people to attempt to reclaim the lost pandemic year, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/04\/17\/987865318\/life-in-the-roaring-2020s-young-people-prepare-to-party-reclaim-lost-pandemic-ye\">some researchers<\/a> (already) comparing post-pandemic life to the post-Spanish Influenza decade of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/roaring-twenties\">Roaring \u201820s<\/a>. Cinema \u2014 the experience of watching a film with strangers in a dark room and sharing in the collective gasps, chuckles and annoyances \u2014 is certainly one of those experiences, although the current zeitgeist might not keep the ailing industry alive indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Egypt is no exception:<\/strong> Spidey made ripples in Egypt, achieving some <a href=\"https:\/\/elcinema.com\/work\/2065787\/boxoffice\">EGP 57 mn<\/a> (USD 3.6 mn) in box office sales. But so have Egyptian movies, as film buffs make their way back to theaters following almost two years of Netflix-and-chilling. Local films have been achieving good box office runs as well, with the past year seeing a renewed appetite for cinema-going in Egypt. This comes after a year when movie theaters racked up losses due to peak pandemic closures that saw them shutter their doors from March to June 2020 and then reopen with 25% caps to enforce social distancing. <strong>Cinema closures between March and May 2020 led to the loss of EGP 270 mn by the movie sector<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eces.org.eg\/cms\/NewsUploads\/Pdf\/2020_6_30-3_15_55Cinema%20report%20final%20-%20Eng(2).pdf\">figures<\/a> published by The Egyptian Center for Economic Studies (ECES).<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Egypt, cinema revenues are split roughly 50\/50 between Egyptian films and Hollywood<\/strong>, varying slightly from year to year, according to ECES, which charted ticket sales from 2015 to 2019. In 2019, cinemas generated EGP 1.2 bn in revenue, up from EGP 843 mn the previous year. However, the report attributes the leap to the increase in ticket costs, rather than an increase in ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The local industry wasn\u2019t exactly churning out dozens of films pre-pandemic.<\/strong> In 2019, 33 Egyptian films were made, raking in USD 72 mn (c. EGP 1.1 bn) \u2014 a modest number compared to say, 2k Bollywood films in 2018 and 660 Hollywood films in 2017). It is, however, still the highest in the Middle East, according to ECES. In 2020, that number <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skynewsarabia.com\/varieties\/1406866-%D8%AE%D8%B3%D8%A7%D9%8A%D9%94%D8%B1-2020-%D9%8A%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%B8%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%8A%D9%86%D9%85%D8%A7-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9%D8%9F\">plummeted<\/a>to EGP 143 mn (USD 9.1 mn).<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it is getting some much-needed interest from investors. <\/strong>\u201cWe are at an intersection where we either build on the talent pool that we have or we become consumers of content that is created and controlled by other global and regional entities,\u201d says Gamal Guemeih, Investment Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/ergomv.com\/\">Ergo, Media Ventures<\/a>, which entered into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egypttoday.com\/Article\/4\/107557\/Egypt%E2%80%99s-Film-Clinic-Group-lands-an-investment-from-Ergo-Media\">definitive agreement<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/film-clinic.com\/index.php\">Film Clinic<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt14805128\/\">Feathers<\/a>, Netflix\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/br-en\/title\/80214886\">Paranormal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/about.netflix.com\/en\/news\/first-arabic-netflix-film-perfect-strangers-to-release-in-january-2022\">Perfect Strangers<\/a>) in September of last year, giving Ergo a 49% stake in Film Clinic. \u201cToday, the whole concept of content production is no longer just a cultural undertaking. Governments are looking at it as a driver of economic growth because it reflects on so many different aspects. It can be a source of employment, FDI, tourism, it helps in many different ways,\u201d Guemeih tells Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And we can see that from the effort being done with festivals: <\/strong>The Gouna Film Festival, (<a href=\"https:\/\/elgounafilmfestival.com\/\">GFF<\/a>), which has also jolted back to life the longstanding Cairo International Film Festival (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciff.org.eg\/\">CIFF<\/a>), has brought pizazz back to the industry. GFF has served the dual role of building the organizational capabilities of event organizers and maintaining healthy competition with CIFF, with many Egyptian organizers working on last year\u2019s Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is a palate for Egyptian cinema in the Kingdom. <\/strong>As the \u201cHollywood of the Middle East,\u201d Egypt exports cinema to other countries in the Arab world, making it dependent on cinema sales in the UAE, Lebanon, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and, recently, Saudi Arabia. The opening of Saudi Arabia\u2019s movie theaters was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/04\/24\/saudi-arabia-movie-theatres-opens-new-market-for-egyptian-films\/\">lauded<\/a> by film critics as good news for the Egyptian cinema industry given the kingdom\u2019s preference for Egyptian films (mostly comedy). In fact, an Egyptian remake of American comedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1204975\/\">Last Vegas<\/a> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/shahid.mbc.net\/ar\/movies\/%D9%88%D9%82%D9%81%D8%A9-%D8%B1%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A9\/movie-889657\">Wa2fet Regala<\/a> which grossed <a href=\"https:\/\/elcinema.com\/work\/2066560\/boxoffice\">EGP 25.8 mn<\/a> in the domestic box office (USD 1.6 mn) and was later released on regional streaming platform Shahid \u2014 was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youm7.com\/story\/2021\/7\/8\/%D8%B1%D8%BA%D9%85-%D9%82%D9%8A%D9%88%D8%AF-%D9%83%D9%88%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%86%D8%A7-%D9%81%D9%8A%D9%84%D9%85-%D9%88%D9%82%D9%81%D8%A9-%D8%B1%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%89-%D8%A5%D9%8A%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%8B%D8%A7-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%AE\/5382907\">highest grossing film<\/a> in Saudi Arabia in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt needs to beware the sleeping Saudi giant: <\/strong>The Kingdom recently <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2651d74f-0e6f-46d4-a1d9-671c292d44e7\">announced<\/a> plans to invest USD 64 bn in its entertainment industry, positioning itself as a filming location for Hollywood blockbusters and signing an eight feature film agreement with Netflix to produce regional content. The launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/redseafilmfest.com\/en\/\">Red Sea Film Festival<\/a> in December of last year with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/originals\/2021\/12\/jeddah-red-sea-film-festival-marks-historic-moment-saudi-filmmakers\">27 Saudi film screenings<\/a> was a clear indication that it is looking to bring some glitz home as it invests in growing the local industry. Saudi Arabia has the potential to absorb as many as 2.6 k screens by 2030 and is expected to hit USD 180 mn in box office revenues by 2024, a report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/m1\/en\/publications\/mena-entertainment-media-outlook-2020-2024.html\">PwC<\/a> estimates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026but Egypt has the potential to remain king:<\/strong> \u201cEgypt still has an advantage because of its huge talent pool both on-screen and off-screen, and the rise of different platforms represents both an opportunity and a threat,\u201d Guemeih tells
