Meanwhile, Shares in Abu Dhabi-based music streaming platform Anghami rose as much as 82% on its Nasdaq trading debut on Friday following <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/34e2d54a-40f0-4a3b-9c05-052f0edf014d\">its merger<\/a> with blank-check company Vistas Media Acquisition Company.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The government\u2019s fuel pricing committee hiked fuel prices for the fourth time <\/strong>in less than a year in response to rising oil prices, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fee97989-84a3-4a9c-9ceb-ed67e0f1d174\">raising prices at the pump<\/a> by another EGP 0.25 per liter for 95, 92 and 80 octane fuel at its latest meeting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD- A trio of stories on the front pages of the business press are <\/strong><strong>signposting more market volatility ahead:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/04\/fresh-inflation-data-could-fuel-further-market-volatility-in-the-week-ahead.html\">CNBC<\/a> thinks that US inflation data out this week could result in more misery for Wall Street, where shares last month suffered their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/nasdaq-futures-edge-higher-end-turbulent-month-2022-01-31\/\">worst January in 13 years<\/a> ahead of what the market anticipates will be an aggressive tightening cycle by the Federal Reserve. The cost of living in the US is accelerating at a pace not seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/us-inflation-consumer-price-index-december-2021-11641940760\">since the early 1980s<\/a>, putting pressure on the Fed to raise rates even faster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not just the Fed:<\/strong> In it\u2019s summary of interest rate moves across the world in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-05\/goodbye-easy-money-as-hawkish-central-banks-speed-up-rate-hikes?srnd=premium&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> is proclaiming that \u201cthe end of easy money is upon us.\u201d JPMorgan now expects rates to have risen in countries that account for half of the world\u2019s GDP by April, which Bloomberg suggests is \u201cthe biggest tightening of monetary policy since the 1990s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>And in another sign of deteriorating investor sentiment:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/cf1d717a-f3c1-489e-b3ac-c4db2124536d\">The Financial Times<\/a> reports that investors are rushing to ensure corporate debt ahead of a possible sell-off in the bond markets. Fresh data shows that trades of credit default swaps \u2014 derivatives that are used to hedge against default \u2014 rose 60% to USD 197 bn in January.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Inflation figures are due out this Thursday, 10 February.<\/strong> Annual urban inflation rose to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e8bb1d8d-f765-4ef6-bccb-73f889b098b1\">5.9%<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e8bb1d8d-f765-4ef6-bccb-73f889b098b1\">in December<\/a> from 5.6% in November. The Central Bank of Egypt expects price stability in the medium term, it said last week <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d2842659-e6ac-47ab-ba44-3132fd174c2a\">following its monetary policy committee meeting<\/a>. The government\u2019s fuel pricing committee\u2019s decision to raise fuel prices over the weekend is also expected to have a limited impact on inflation, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fee97989-84a3-4a9c-9ceb-ed67e0f1d174\">analysts said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US will follow just a few hours later<\/strong>, with CPI data set to be released at 3:30pm CLT (8:30am EET). VC is actually a subset of private equity, although the two types of investment <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1a93933d-a582-4afd-865f-dc3ee1f82d62\">differ substantially<\/a>. And it\u2019s booming, with <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6f953f73-c694-4b90-83d7-c735b7316eae\">global VC investment exceeding<\/a> USD 675 bn in 2021. But venture debt \u2014 or, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-19\/meet-venture-capital-s-baby-cousin-venture-debt-quicktake?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> puts it, VC\u2019s lesser-known \u201cbaby cousin\u201d \u2014 is also seeing soaring growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what is venture debt, exactly?<\/strong> It\u2019s a kind of loan offered by banks and nonbank lenders that typically combines the traditional features of a loan with some aspects of VC financing. It\u2019s designed specifically for early-stage, high-growth companies that may not yet be in the black, but are performing well and generating strong revenues. It\u2019s not generally available to seed-stage companies, but is \u201cdesigned for companies that prioritize growth over profitability,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svb.com\/startup-insights\/venture-debt\/how-does-venture-debt-work\">Silicon<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.svb.com\/startup-insights\/venture-debt\/how-does-venture-debt-work\">Valley Bank explainer<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s important to understand that venture debt doesn\u2019t replace VC investment. It complements it: <\/strong>\u201cVenture debt really piggybacks on venture capital,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/londonfintechpodcast.com\/lfp163-a-deep-dive-into-venture-debt-an-important-but-underused-funding-option-w-alex-baluta-ceo\/\">says Alex Baluta<\/a>, CEO of alternative asset investor <a href=\"https:\/\/flowcap.com\/\">Flow Capital<\/a>. It\u2019s debt that supports the equity and serves as a bridge for high-growth, venture funded companies \u2014 to their next funding round, IPO or sale, he adds. Companies without VC investors face significant difficulties in attracting any venture debt, says SVB. \u201cThe venture lender wants to follow in the shoes of investors they know and trust, rather than risk lending to a company without venture backing,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the big advantage of this kind of financing? It\u2019s non-dilutive: <\/strong>For business founders, venture debt <a href=\"https:\/\/trinitycap.com\/venture-debt\/\">provides growth capital<\/a> with minimal equity dilution. Founders get relatively fast access to a predetermined amount of capital, without having to give up another big chunk of equity. This can fuel growth, so borrowing companies could achieve a higher valuation before their next VC funding round. Venture debt investors usually have a hands-off approach as well, and generally don\u2019t require board seats, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emcap.com\/thoughts\/what-entrepreneurs-need-to-know-before-securing-series-a-venture-debt\/\">says VC firm Emergence Capital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plus, venture debt <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/flowcap.com\/\">is more flexible<\/a><\/strong><strong> than traditional bank debt.<\/strong> And it\u2019s becoming more and more creative in the types of loans offered, says Baluta. \u201cSome [investors] will do it based on your ad spend; some offer short-term loans, or perpetual loans.\u201d Recurring revenue loans might be provided to companies with a regular, expected income; product-based loans often center around particular technology, which the borrowing company has developed and is trying to sell; and equipment financing is secured by the equipment owned by borrowers, Bloomberg notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The size of loans can vary considerably: <\/strong>Industry leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svb.com\/startup-insights\/venture-debt\/how-does-venture-debt-work\">Silicon Valley Bank<\/a> issues venture debt loans as big as USD 30-40 mn, while Flow Capital \u2014 a smaller operation \u2014 tends to stick within the USD 1-5 mn range, says Baluta. Loan types and sizes vary significantly based on the scale of the borrowing business, the quality and quantity of equity it\u2019s already raised, and its objective for raising venture debt, notes SVB. The principal amount of debt is often around 30% of the total funds raised in the last round of equity financing, <a href=\"https:\/\/corporatefinanceinstitute.com\/resources\/knowledge\/finance\/venture-debt\/\">according to an explainer<\/a> by online platform Corporate Finance Institute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are they structured? <\/strong>Venture debt usually incorporates three elements, notes UK-based asset manager <a href=\"https:\/\/boostandco.com\/venture-debt-explained\/\">BOOST&Co<\/a>. These are a fee of 1-2% of the approved loan amount, an annual interest rate of 10-12%, and an equity kicker worth 10-20% of the loan. The equity kicker is usually structured <a href=\"https:\/\/flowcap.com\/warrants-in-venture-debt\/\">as a warrant<\/a>, giving the lender the right \u2014 but no commitment \u2014 to purchase a relatively small amount of equity within the borrowing company at a fixed price within a specific period of time. The debt should usually be repaid within three-four years, CFI notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The global venture debt market is booming: <\/strong>The market for potential venture debt investments based on VC investments stood at some USD 47 bn, as of March 2021, according to Bloomberg. Total venture debt activity grew to roughly USD 25 bn in 2019 from USD 5 bn in 2010, and the boom in special-purpose acquisition vehicles (SPACs) could speed its growth still further, it added. The largest proportion of venture debt is funneled into tech companies, which borrowed some USD 18 bn in 2020, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchbook.com\/newsletter\/venture-debt-growth-reaching-all-areas-of-vc-market-bzd\">data company Pitchbook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And in MENA, appetite for the funding mechanism also appears high:<\/strong> Some 80% of investors and startups surveyed by Magnitt and Shuaa for their recently released <a href=\"https:\/\/d2p9i44hnkrmkx.cloudfront.net\/files\/research-files\/13122021\/2098525739361-2021%20MENA%20Venture%20Debt%20Sentiment%20Report.pdf\">MENA Venture Debt Sentiment Report (pdf)<\/a> plan to use venture debt as a funding tool in the near future. 74% of investors had at least one portfolio company that had previously raised venture debt.
