Macro\u2019s shares will be listed on the EGX tomorrow under the stock ticker MCRO.CA. Macro Group plans to offer up to 45.8% of its shares in a transaction that could see the company valued at around EGP 3.5 bn, the FRA had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d209b00e-3051-472d-89d7-1bdc2b7588df\">said last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-02\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt plans to set up industrial mining \u201ccities\u201d for the extraction of gold, copper, and phosphate,<\/strong> Oil Minister Tarek El Molla said today at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futuremineralssummit.com\/about-the-forum\/\">Future Minerals Forum<\/a> in Riyadh, adding that work is underway to establish the country\u2019s first accredited gold refinery, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/egypt-plans-first-accredited-gold-refinery-sky-news-arabia-citing-petroleum-minister\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The government is working on making more flexible <\/strong><strong>mining policies<\/strong> as part of its plans to ramp up investments in the mining industry, El Molla said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asharqbusiness.com\/article\/31223\">Bloomberg AlSharq<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We\u2019ll have more<\/strong> on this story and others in tomorrow\u2019s <strong>EnterpriseAM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today\u2019s EnterpriseAM:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>World Bank hikes Egypt growth forecast to 5.5% in FY2021-2022: <\/strong>The bank <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e99c3ff6-ad07-4ae5-84b3-c2f3a4c275dd\">revised upwards<\/a> its prediction for Egypt\u2019s GDP growth by 0.5 percentage points due to Egypt\u2019s rising exports, growth in our tech and natural gas sectors, and a rebound in tourism.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2026This comes amidst a forecasted slowdown in global growth this year:<\/strong> The World Bank is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/65a6a000-17e7-495b-a716-17845d2d0408\">projecting<\/a> a 1.4 percentage-point slowdown in global GDP growth to 4.1% in 2022, with developing economies to get the brunt of the hit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Egypt to see its first locally assembled EV in 2023: <\/strong>Egypt <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e01712b2-bb02-4e7a-90c0-7ceea783a6e7\">will produce<\/a> its first locally assembled electric vehicles next year, with El Nasr Automotive in talks with two Chinese firms with the aim of signing final contracts by March.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>It\u2019s day three at the<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wyfegypt.com\/\">World Youth Forum<\/a><\/strong><strong> in Sharm El Sheikh: <\/strong>The day saw Planning Minister Hala El Said headline a panel called Developmental Initiatives to Confront Poverty, speaking on the importance of lowering the poverty rate in order to pave the way for future development, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/315164397320654\">cabinet statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>El Said highlighted the importance of the Decent Life initiative in this regard<\/strong>, detailing its progress so far. Some USD 45-50 bn have been earmarked for the initiative so far to provide education, medical services, housing, and more to beneficiaries, she indicated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi also spoke today on Egypt\u2019s economic reforms<\/strong>, mentioning how they paved the way for Egypt\u2019s economic resilience and recovery from the pandemic and allowed the country to emerge largely unscathed, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3njDF1W\">Masrawy<\/a>. The local version, dubbed Shabab Balad, was launched yesterday at the World Youth Forum in the first such program in the region.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Egypt will continue to support the Palestinian cause<\/strong> and push for peace talks to continue, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi reiterated during the forum, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/posts\/483391826482884\">Ittihadiya statement<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES ABROAD-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-03\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>The US could see inflation hit a 40-year high,<\/strong> with consumer prices estimated to have climbed at 7.1% y-o-y, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/us-inflation-consumer-price-index-december-2021-11641940760?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>. The rankings are made based on anonymous employee feedback working in thousands of companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tech companies dominated the 100-entry list,<\/strong> making up 40% of the US\u2019 best employers \u201cthanks in part to their flexible work environments, consistent support throughout the pandemic, and a focus on better pay, benefits, and work-life balance,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/blog\/best-places-to-work-revealed\/\">Glassdoor said in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Computer systems design <\/strong><strong>services company <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/2022\/01\/11\/nvidia-best-place-work\/\">Nvidia<\/a><\/strong><strong> topped the list<\/strong>, with 95% of its employees saying that they would recommend the company to a friend and 98% approving of the company\u2019s current head, Jensen Huang.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Toxic work culture, not pay, is driving the Great Resignation<\/strong>, finds a new study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/toxic-culture-is-driving-the-great-resignation\/\">MIT Sloan Management Review<\/a>. The study found that company culture was 10.4 times more likely to predict employee attrition, with toxic workplace culture defined as abusive leadership, discrimination, harassment and a cutthroat environment. While higher wages are driving mns of people to quit their jobs, an analysis of more than 1.4 mn Glassdoor reviews found that workplace culture was 12.4 times more likely than wages to predict whether an employee stayed with a company \u2014 a trend that held true for front-liners and knowledge workers. Natural language processing (NLP) \u2014 a branch of AI that uses machine learning to make sense of language and turn it into signals used by quant funds \u2014 attempts to analyze the tones, cadence, and emphasis of words, in addition to phraseology. In one experiment, NLP software found that tech executives spoke in a worried tone but used reassuring words about a looming semiconductor and supply chain crisis in 2020. Think of it as a really advanced lie detector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advocates of the technology claim that it can make sense of data like analysts\u2019 phone <\/strong><strong>calls,<\/strong> Q&As and interviews with the media to glean insights \u2014 this in spite of an absence of quantifiable proof to show that these AI systems, which cost mns, can provide financial returns. Last year marks the fourth time in five years that extreme weather events have cost the world over USD 100 bn \u2014 and we can only expect things to get worse from here, the study warns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most expensive natural disasters of the year: <\/strong>Hurricane Ida in the US topped the list at an economic cost of USD 65 bn, followed by floods in Europe at an estimated USD 43 bn. Next up was the Texas winter storm which cost USD 23 bn, China\u2019s Henan floods at USD 17.6 bn, and the British Colombia floods in Canada at USD 7.5 bn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Africa took a major beating from the weather last year: <\/strong>South Sudan experienced major flooding back <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/disaster\/fl-2021-000108-ssd\">in July<\/a>, the Lake Chad droughts affecting Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, as well as the East Africa drought which hit Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia. The report did not add an estimated cost for these events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Count the cost in lives not USD: <\/strong>The study notes that in the developing world, which suffers the most from global warming despite having contributed to it the least, climate destruction is more adequately measured not by USD lost but by human impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2021 also saw the Greenland ice sheet shrink for the 25th year in a row<\/strong>, according to data from the Danish Arctic monitoring service <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/01\/1109352\">Polar Portal<\/a> \u2014 which operates under the United Nations. The ice sheet lost around 166 bn tonnes during the 12-month period ending in August 2021, meaning less space for animals and humans to inhabit and a signal that global warming continues to affect the world\u2019s arctic regions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The report outlined a number of recommendations to mitigate the climate change crisis, which should be called the D\u2019uh section: <\/strong>Countries worldwide need to consider cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions as a top political priority, governments should invest in the energy transition to renewables, and richer countries should provide more funding to poorer countries to achieve these goals and further adapt and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Including a call to COP27:<\/strong> The report calls for a fund to be set up by the end of COP27, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a925d015-f57e-4886-9f6d-db7a15c76bd3\">which will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh in November<\/a>, to help people who are suffering from permanent losses due to climate change. \u201cBringing that fund to life needs to be a global priority in 2022,\u201d said Nushrat Chowdhury, Christian Aid\u2019s climate justice advisor in Bangladesh. Last year\u2019s COP26 was largely considered a failure as countries failed to agree on joint action to be taken. The Economist called the summit a COP-out in a podcast episode that looks at what climate cooperation could look like in 2022 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/podcasts\/2022\/01\/03\/will-there-be-significant-action-against-climate-change-in-2022\">listen, runtime: 32:13<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, the world is still debating what activities should be considered green: <\/strong>Nuclear power and forms of natural gas could be labeled as \u201cgreen\u201d in the EU\u2019s classification system, which <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/business-economy-euro\/banking-and-finance\/sustainable-finance\/eu-taxonomy-sustainable-activities_en\">establishes \u201ca list of environmentally sustainable economic activities<\/a>,\u201d as part of a new proposal from Belgium. The proposal would consider investments in new nuclear power and natural gas plants as \u201csustainable\u201d and would help avoid depriving the continent of some of its critical energy sources, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7872a05f-9e38-4740-9b1b-4efc69ca316c?shareType=nongift\">Financial Times<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt would stand to gain from this definition <\/strong>as the country moves forward its energy hub ambitions which includes <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b961b01c-744a-4a34-ba63-d4ad309bf433\">several ventures<\/a> into natural gas to maintain its position as a major export market. Meanwhile, Egypt is also currently constructing the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e3683636-800d-4aa3-b1db-e7c581499ce4\">4.8 GW Dabaa nuclear plant<\/a> \u2014 which is so far 20% completed \u2014 and work is expected to be completed in 2030 rather than in FY2028-2029 due to covid-19 disruption.
