But first, the Adani fallout continues\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION-<\/strong> <strong>TotalEnergies halts business <\/strong><strong>with Adani due to corruption allegations: <\/strong>French oil giant TotalEnergies has suspended investments in India\u2019s Adani Group following a US probe into <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2921b35e-35ca-423c-8fea-f3fdbf5c17c8\/today:-a-big-day-for-renewables-in-egypt-%2B-al-ajban-solar-farm-breaks-ground\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">bribery<\/a> and corruption at Adani Green Energy. Total has a 20% stake in Adani Green, 37.4% in Adani Total Gas, and has three renewable energy JVs with Adani Green. \u201cUntil such time when the accusations against the Adani group individuals and their consequences have been clarified, TotalEnergies will not make any new financial contribution as part of its investments in the Adani group of companies,\u201d the company said in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/totalenergies.com\/news\/press-releases\/totalenergies-statement-its-investments-related-adani-group-india\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. The company maintains that it was not informed of the investigation. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The scandal puts a wrench in Total\u2019s Asia expansion plans: <\/strong>Total was banking on expansion in India \u2014 which is experiencing a surge in electricity generation \u2014 to grow its renewables and natural gas businesses. Its partnership with Adani was dubbed a \u201cstrategic alliance,\u201d with 25% of Total\u2019s renewables portfolio dedicated to investments in Adani\u2019s solar and wind assets. The prequalified bidders include Masdar, EDF Renouvelables, Total Energies, Marubeni, Sumitomo, Jera, Kepco, Korea Western Power, Spic Huanghe Hydropower, Jinko Power, and Sembcorp Utilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This has been in the works:<\/strong> The company <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/589c9303-508b-4ff2-9bdc-c0176260b0a8\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">issued requests for qualification (RFQs)<\/a> for five wind and solar projects in September. Key projects in this round include the 1.5 GW Dawadmi Wind IPP in Riyadh and four solar PV projects: a 1.4 GW plant in Najran, 600 MW each in Samtah and Ad Darb in Jizan, and a 400 MW plant in Hail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#3-<\/strong><strong>Abu <\/strong><strong>Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB) has released its first comprehensive <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/11\/2364.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Net Zero report<\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/11\/2364.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">(pdf)<\/a><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adib.ae\/en\/pages\/news_details.aspx?id=497\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The report sets decarbonization targets for 2030 across its operational and financed emissions, aiming for a 49% reduction in operational emissions by 2030 compared to its 2022 baseline and setting sector-specific targets in its financing portfolio. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Sector-specific targets breakdown:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Home finance to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 39%.<\/li>\n<li>Car finance to to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 19%.<\/li>\n<li>Real estate developer activity to reduce Scopes 1, 2, and 3 by 41%.<\/li>\n<li>Air transport to reduce Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 28%.<\/li>\n<li>Electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply to reduce Scopes 1, 2, and 3 by 37%<\/li>\n<li>Petroleum manufacturing to reduce Scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 18%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Not their first: <\/strong>ADIB released its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0c83d718-da5a-4cac-ba3c-26d164da89e2\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental, Social, and Governance report<\/a> detailing around AED 5.57 bn that has been invested in sustainable finance throughout 2023 in July. The bank also highlighted its commitment to net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 \u2014 and announced its Scope 1 emissions have been reduced by 65% since 2022<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#4- Egypt launches green label guidelines: <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s Ministry of Environment has launched the Green Label Guidelines project, which sets rules for how plastic products can qualify for a green label, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid0qXNebzpg9qnXGz5pyW7Z48EzfATtLSwvjbYGScAmtETBPeMiXRb2873gTFLZkQW1l\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. Plastic manufacturers will be able to submit an application to receive a \u201cgreen label\u201d certificate, which is expected to be valid for three years. The ministry hopes that the guidelines \u2014 developed with support from the German International Cooperation (GIZ) \u2014 will encourage recycling and incentivize plastic manufacturers to increase their use of recyclable components in their production to reduce plastics\u2019 negative impact on the environment. The statement does not specify the type of incentives that would be available for those who receive the license. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What are the criteria? <\/strong>In order for plastic manufacturers to receive the green label, they will have to redesign their products to contain a certain percentage of recycled materials or be completely biodegradable, and limit the production of waste. The green label will be limited to highly recyclable polymers \u2014 PET, HDPE, LDPE, or PP. These products will also have to align with standards set by the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality, with products used for food also having to meet the National Food Safety Authority requirements. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#5- Major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon notably reduced <\/strong><strong>their public profile at COP29<\/strong>, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/089b24f7-3d2c-49db-ba49-0989291aa094\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a> reported last week. Unlike previous summits, the tech giants chose not to exhibit in the conference's business area, known as the green zone. This shift comes as the industry faces increasing scrutiny over the significant energy demands of data centers supporting AI. Google reported a nearly 50% increase in energy emissions over the past five years due to AI, and a Morgan Stanley analysis predicts that global emissions from data centers could triple by the end of the decade because of generative AI.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Data centers could slow the energy transition: <\/strong>Utilities in the US, Poland, Germany, and Malaysia are turning to natural gas and coal to meet the surge in electricity demand from data centers as the deployment of clean energy lags behind, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/how-ai-cloud-computing-may-delay-transition-clean-energy-2024-11-21\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported last week. Dominion Energy is constructing a 1 GW gas plant in the data-centers-dense Virginia, while Entergy is building its first natural gas-fired power plant in Mississippi in fifty years to power two Amazon data centers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Still, some major <\/strong><strong>players <\/strong><strong>are hailing AI potential in reducing emissions: <\/strong>Adnoc, Masdar, and Microsoft recently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/088fbccd-b9eb-49a1-9765-3a36ab86a88f\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">released a joint report<\/a> highlighting the transformative potential of AI for the clean energy sector. The report bets on AI applications\u2019 potential to make energy operations and grid connections more efficient and predicts that AI-driven energy demand could stimulate the innovation of carbon-free energy solutions. Adnoc Group CEO and Industry and Advanced Technology Minister Sultan Al Jaber <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1ba5afd5-8e95-4fb6-af89-1c81e54549d6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">called for<\/a> \u201cintegrating renewable energy, nuclear energy, and gas in the most cost-and carbon-efficient way\u201d to meet the surge in energy demand created by the \u201cexponential growth of AI\u201d earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#6- Big oil places faith in biofuels uptake: <\/strong>Major oil and gas companies \u2014 such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, TotalEnergies, and Eni \u2014 are placing their bets on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with 43 projects expected to be operational by 2030, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/oil-majors-are-betting-big-biofuels-with-over-40-projects-by-2030-rystad-says-2024-11-20\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported last week, citing a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rystadenergy.com\/news\/big-oil-bets-on-biofuels\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Rystad report<\/a>. These companies\u2019 investments could add 286k barrels per day (bpd) of production capacity, with BP taking the biggest share with a 130k bpd production capacity. The aviation sector accounts for 2% of global energy-related emissions. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But not everyone shares that sentiment: <\/strong>AirAsia co-founder thinks SAF is \u201cstupid\u201d and \u201cmakes absolutely no sense at all because there is not enough cooking oil in the world to fill the planes,\u201d he said at the Skift Global Forum East in Dubai, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/aviation\/2024\/11\/21\/saf-is-stupid-and-new-planes-are-the-answer-to-sustainability-goals-airasia-chief-says\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The National<\/a> reports. To achieve the International Air Transport Association\u2019s (IATA) goal to reach net zero by 2050, \u201cengine manufacturers and plane manufacturers will have to come up with better equipment,\u201d he said.
