JNHPP now provides electricity to 45% of Tanzanians with three hydro turbine units connected to the national grid. The project aims to reach 2.15 GW within the next year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">This has been in the works:<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> Elsewedy Electric and Arab Contractors <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/82c1be51-791d-4cd5-9ee6-2d21101c64db\" rel=\"noopener\">activated<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> the first of nine hydro turbines on their USD 2.9 bn project in January when construction on the dam \u2014 spanning over 1 km with a 34 bn cbm storage capacity \u2014 had been completed. Tanzania\u2019s Energy and Minerals Ministry <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/81d13a3c-e79f-4ff1-93a2-19049c1eb8c7\/today:-masdar-arlington-energy-starts-construction-on-two-british-bess-sites\" rel=\"noopener\">connected the first 235 MW<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> of the project in February and the plant was announced to be <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/817b4a75-e1ec-4ee1-9fc5-7d43042419f6\" rel=\"noopener\">98% completed<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> in May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Background:<\/strong> The Tanzanian government kicked off the first filling of the project <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/67b5ade0-715d-4fa0-a992-aaf6e9f2adab\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">late in 2022<\/a>, and after successful testing, the consortium achieved a rotating speed of 150 rpm with a 50 hertz frequency from operations on the first turbine, which had a capacity of 235 MW.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The plant has some opposition: <\/strong>JNHPP \u2013 located at the UN World Heritage \u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/81d13a3c-e79f-4ff1-93a2-19049c1eb8c7\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sparked concern<\/a> from conservationists in the country.
