WASTE MANAGEMENT-<\/p>\n

A <\/strong>new <\/strong>waste management plant in Oman: <\/strong>Oman\u2019s Elite Hazardous Waste<\/a><\/a>Management Solution (FZC)<\/a> has broken ground on a USD 3.5 mn industrial waste treatment plant in Sohar Port and Freezone<\/a>, according to a statement<\/a>. The plant \u2014 which spans an area of 10k sqm \u2014 will treat and recycle industrial waste to produce heavy oil for use in slow-moving machines and a low-contamination carbon dust fit for cement and road construction industries. It has an initial production capacity of 40 tons per day, with the capacity slated to increase to 80 tons per day within one year. The plant will also dispose of industrial waste that will not be recycled. <\/p>\n

This has been in the works: <\/strong>Oman\u2019s Sohar Port and Freezone signed a land lease agreement<\/a> with FZC to build the plant last year.<\/p>\n

More waste recycling for Oman: <\/strong>Oman Cement Company is also launching a waste-to-energy facility<\/a> to reduce gas consumption by processing municipal solid waste. The plant will use Refuse-Derived Fuel processed from municipal solid waste to power its cement complex at its Misfah complex with an annual capacity of 3.6 mn tonnes. <\/p>\n

DESALINATION-<\/p>\n

Oman taps LG for desal SWRO membranes: <\/strong>LG Water Solutions \u2014 a business unit of South Korea\u2019s LG Chem \u2014 has been awarded a contract to supply 23k units of its seawater reverse osmosis membranes (SWRO) to Nama Power and Water Procurement Company\u2019s USD 325 mn Ghubrah 3 desalination plant<\/a> in Oman, according to a press release<\/a>. The supply will represent 50% of the desalination plant\u2019s total membrane capacity at full operation. The value of the contract was not disclosed. <\/p>\n

About Ghubrah 3: <\/strong>The project will have a production capacity of 300k cubic meters per day. It is expected to begin operations in 1Q 2027. A consortium of Sogex Oman, Spain\u2019s GS Inima, and Saudi Arabia\u2019s Al Jomaih Energy and Water \u2014 through their JV, the Capital Desalination Company \u2014 will be responsible for construction. The project is set to be the largest desalination plant in Oman, located on a land area of 70.4k sqm.<\/p>\n

Not LG Chem\u2019s first operations in the region: <\/strong>LG Chem signed a cooperation agreement with KSA\u2019s Al Khorayef Group to build an industrial complex<\/a> in KSA to manufacture SWRO membranes and a technical center back in May. The company is also providing desalination devices<\/a> to Moroccan state-owned fertilizer and phosphate company OCP Group. Also in Morocco, LG Chem made plans to build a Lithium-Phosphate-Iron cathode material plant and lithium conversion plant<\/a> with China\u2019s Huayou Group last year. <\/p>\n

GREEN MANUFACTURING- <\/p>\n

Emirates <\/strong>Global Aluminium (EGA) has completed the design phase of its next-generation <\/strong>smelting technology EX,<\/strong> according to a statement<\/a>. EX promises to improve production capacity by up to 22% compared to the current DX+ Ultra technology<\/a>. The new technology features two variants, one focusing on maximizing productivity and the other in minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. The latter is expected to reduce emissions per ton of aluminum by around 12%. The technology, set to be tested in 10 pilot reduction cells at EGA\u2019s Al Taweelah smelter, aims to be fully industrialized by 2028.<\/p>\n

EGA is upping its decarbonization efforts: <\/strong>The company broke ground at the region's first 100% renewable energy-powered industrial data centers<\/a> in March to integrate AI and automation solutions into EGA\u2019s operations and increase data processing capacity 2.3k times while curbing unit processing costs. EGA also partnered with UAE\u2019s Masdar on aluminum decarbonization<\/a> and low-carbon aluminum. The agreement involves the joint exploration of renewable energy projects, including battery storage and green hydrogen production, to support EGA's decarbonization efforts in the UAE.<\/p>\n

BATTERY STORAGE- <\/p>\n

Sungrow + Algihaz partner on energy storage project: <\/strong>Chinese PV inverter manufacturer Sungrow Power Supply has signed an agreement with KSA-based investment company Algihaz Holding for a 7.8 GWh energy storage project, according to Reuters<\/a>. Construction of the project is expected to be completed later this year. <\/p>\n

Not Sungrow\u2019s first Saudi venture: <\/strong>Sungrow will deploy 165 MW inverters and 160-760 MWh of battery energy storage systems at KSA\u2019s Amaala off-grid project<\/a>. The company also inked an agreement in August 2023 to build a 536 MW battery storage system<\/a> in Neom. <\/p>\n
