Before we jump into that, a quick update on the China-EU front\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- China calls for an end to EU\u2019s EV <\/strong><strong>tariffs: <\/strong>China wants the EU to put a stop to provisional tariffs on EV imports by 4 July. The duties of up to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1419c306-dec9-4a0d-92eb-9810a3397435\/today:-ceer-inks-major-supply-agreement-with-hyundai-%2B-uae%25e2%2580%2599s-tenderd-closes-series-a-funding-round\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">38.1% on Chinese EVs<\/a> is set to be put into effect by 2 November as the EU\u2019s investigation of unfair tax credits on the imports continues. China has also threatened retaliation should the protectionist measures go through and hinted at slapping tariffs up to 25% on European cars with 2.5 or above liter engines, lead analyst at Merics Jacob Gunter told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>China is trying to cozy up to Germany: <\/strong>China has pitched <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-24\/china-floats-perks-for-german-carmakers-in-bid-to-stop-ev-levies?srnd=economics-trade\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">lowering the 15% existing tariffs<\/a> on large-engine cars from the EU \u2014 benefitting German luxury car manufacturers \u2014 if Germany convinces the bloc to drop the levies, according to sources close to the matter, according to comments made during a meeting between China\u2019s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and German counterpart Robert Habeck. The alternative could see Beijing hitting large European cars with a 25% fee that would particularly hurt Germany, a country already opposed to the tariffs on Chinese EV imports. <strong>The story grabbed ink in <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/china-wants-eu-scrap-ev-tariffs-evs-by-july-4-chinese-state-media-reports-2024-06-24\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-eu-evs-tariffs-801965213d23e8a67452ed6a4a560d49\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">AP<\/a><\/strong><strong>, and <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/06\/24\/china-wants-eu-to-scrap-higher-tariffs-and-abide-by-wto-rules.html?&amp;qsearchterm=china\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a>#1- Japan\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itochu.co.jp\/en\/index.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Itochu Corporation<\/a><\/strong><strong> and ADX-listed <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.emiratessteelarkan.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Emirates Steel Arkan<\/a><\/strong><strong> will launch a feasibility <\/strong><strong>study to explore setting up a low-carbon iron processing plant in Abu Dhabi<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/industry\/japans-itochu-emirates-steel-arkan-begin-feasibility-study-on-new-uae-plant-report-i9peietu\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Zawya<\/a> reports, citing Japanese news outlet <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Business\/Markets\/Commodities\/Japan-s-Itochu-to-build-low-carbon-iron-supply-chain-with-Brazil-UAE\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikkei Asia<\/a>. The project will be in collaboration with Japanese steel manufacturing firm <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jfe-steel.co.jp\/en\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">JFE Steel<\/a> and aims to produce 2.5 mm metric tons of reduced iron annually starting in 2027. High-grade iron ore will be sourced from Brazil by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csn.com.br\/quem-somos\/grupo-csn\/csn-mineracao\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">CSN Mineracao<\/a> \u2014 a company partially owned by Itochu \u2014 processed in the UAE, and then exported to Japan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We knew this was coming: <\/strong>Emirates Steel Arkan <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e89017bd-dda7-4622-a01c-17b0168c0a77\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an MoU<\/a> with the UAE\u2019s AD Ports Group, Itochu Corporation, and JFE Steel to work on establishing the integrated low-carbon iron supply chain complex last year. The company first <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a1a4b0f8-0acb-4106-9395-81be478d0947\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">announced the partnership<\/a> back in 2022. The plant\u2019s initial expected production date of 2H 2025 has been delayed. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>UAE ? green iron: <\/strong>Renewables giant Masdar has been looking at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/cb22b900-af16-4778-bad7-114be3e45648\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">raising the production capacity<\/a> of its pilot project to produce green iron ore for Emirates Steel Arkan from 2 MW electrolyzers to 100 MW in its second phase. The UAE\u2019s AD Ports Group and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/libertysteelgroup.com\/uk\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberty Steel<\/a>, the steelmaking arm of UK-based investor GFG Alliance, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/933514e8-768a-41b7-8b11-85192fde3f75\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">inked an MoU<\/a> last December to explore plans to set up a green iron production facility in the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (Kezad).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>#2- Saudi\u2019s Energy Ministry has launched an \u201cunprecedented\u201d geographic <\/strong><strong>survey to identify suitable sites to develop renewable energy projects<\/strong>, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moenergy.gov.sa\/en\/MediaCenter\/News\/Pages\/Ministry-launches-groundbreaking-survey-for-renewable-energy-sites-in-Saudi-Arabia.aspx\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The statement said the project\u2019s contracts were awarded to local firms to install 1.2k stations to measure solar and wind energy over 850k sqm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The first of its kind:<\/strong> Energy Minister Prince Abdelaziz bin Salman said that no other country globally has attempted to conduct a similar survey on such an area scale, according to the statement. The Kingdom plans to tender new renewable energy projects with a capacity of 20 GW annually starting this year, according to the minister. It hopes to reach between 100 GW and 130 GW by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#3- NextNorth + FlyNow to collaborate on urban air mobility: <\/strong>Spain\u2019s air taxi platform <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nextnorth.io\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">NextNorth Air Mobility<\/a> and Austria\u2019s Urban Air Mobility (UAM) company <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flynow-aviation.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">FlyNow Aviation<\/a> have signed an MoU to partner on UAM solutions in the Middle East, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/press-release\/companies-news\/nextnorth-air-mobility-and-flynow-aviation-to-collaborate-on-groundbreaking-sandbox-project-for-urban-air-mobility-bsu484a2\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. FlyNow recently said it is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0d2eb1cd-670c-48ec-bcb1-5bb1fe3275d8\/egypt-gets-two-new-recycling-factories-%2B-ebrd-launches-climate-change-innovation-programme-initiative\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">planning to test<\/a> its new eVTOL in the UAE and Saudi Arabia in 2025 as part of its goal to make flying taxis affordable, efficient, and scalable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- Global coalition urges governments to step up climate ambitions by 2025:<\/strong> A coalition \u2014 dubbed Mission 2025 \u2014 of major corporations, financial institutions, cities, and regions has been formed to push governments to raise climate ambitions, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/mission-2025-group-urges-governments-set-more-ambitious-climate-goals-2024-06-23\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Convened by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globaloptimism.com\/who-we-work-with\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Groundswell<\/a> and supported by groups such as Global Optimism, Systems Change Lab, and the Bezos Earth Fund, the coalition will back bold climate action by political leaders. This comes ahead of the February 2025 deadline for countries to submit their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to the UN, which will include emission-cutting plans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Support for green policies is waning:<\/strong> Concerns are rising over politicians potentially weakening measures to tackle global warming amid a growing \u201cgreenlash,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8540ac9a-5d36-45f7-bcc3-8459f86d3f14\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Financial Times<\/a> writes. Recent rollbacks on environmental measures by several companies and governments, such as Germany\u2019s softened proposal on greener boilers and the EU's scrapped target on agricultural emissions, are amongst the recent moves that are sparking concern. Green politicians\u2019 election losses in Europe also suggest diminishing voter support for climate policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">THE SCORECARD- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>At least USD 10 tn of new <\/strong><strong>ins<\/strong><strong>. needed to reach net zero: <\/strong>At least USD 10 tn of new ins. cover for energy, road transport, and building sectors will be needed between 2023 and 2030 to reach net zero, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/27939536-eff5-4f64-9d5a-7c4154b19944\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Financial Times<\/a> reports, citing ins. broker Howden and Boston Consulting Group. This would cover more than half of the USD 19 tn already invested in the energy transition and includes coverage for offshore wind projects, solar farms, and the insulation of existing housing. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This places \u201cunprecedented structural pressures\u201d on the sector:<\/strong> Ins.ers already pay for coverage on hydrogen-powered and electric vehicles, offshore wind, and hybrid building materials, but are facing pressure to expand coverage to more recent green technologies. This would entail that insurers take on new risks with products that lack information on possible losses and are harder to underwrite. While some are calling on ins. firms to divert funds from fossil fuel projects to free up resources to insure new green initiatives, the risks involved makes it unlikely in the short term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">DANGER ZONE- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Tehran sinks as water shortage persists: <\/strong>Iran\u2019s acute water crisis is putting more than 800 towns and villages \u2014 including Tehran and Isfahan \u2014 at risk of ground collapse, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/irans-water-crisis-leads-to-alarming-ground-collapse\/a-69405927\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Deutsche Welle<\/a> reports, citing comments made by Iranian authorities. The country\u2019s capital Tehran sinks up to 22 cm annually \u2014 seven times higher than the normally predicted drop, according to the news outlet. The risk of land subsidence also threatens the country\u2019s infrastructure, expert on hydraulic structures and dam construction Roozbeh Eskandari told DW.
